Adding memory of different sizes

I have a Mac Pro 8 core running with two 1GB memory sticks. I'd like to add additional memory. I'm looking at adding 4x2GB memory sticks. Is there any reason why I couldn't install the 2GB sticks and leave the 1GB sticks in the system for a total of 10GB of RAM? Some systems perform better if all the memory is of the same size and I'm not sure if that holds true for Mac hardware. This is my first Mac and my first memory upgrade so I wanted to make sure before I purchased anything. Right now, all I'm using the system for is Final Cut Studio 2.

Does anyone know if it is ok to mix, firstly different size ram and secondly - different brands. I am currently using a 1x PC2100 512mb stick and 1x PC2100 256mb stick (Different Brands) and have never had any problems. However I am looking to replace the 256 stick with either another 512 or 1g, when searching on the net most of the advice is not to mix brands and always use pairs rather than different size sticks?

Using matched pairs is still the best way to go with memory but that doesn't mean that having different brands won't work. It is a crap shoot when mixing different sticks of memory. Sometimes it works fine but most of the time it causes problems.

I am currently running leopard on a 1st generation Mac pro with 4GB of ram from ramjet.com. I would like to add more ram to to it and am a little confused. To get maximum performace, I unerstand I fill all the memory slots. I am thinking about adding 2x2GB modules (replacing 2x512MB). Will this be ok? to have 7GB of RAM? will this still take advantage of the 256 bit addressing? Thanks.

In order to take advantage of quad-channel interleaving you must install RAM in equal-sized quads, e.g., four 1 GB DIMMs, four 512 MB DIMMS, four 2 GB DIMMs. Having four modules of differing sizes does not do the trick, although you must install RAM at least in equal-sized pairs.
I assume you currently have two 512 GB DIMMs and two 1 GB DIMMs giving a total of 3 GBs. You could replace the 512 MB DIMMs with two additional 1 GB DIMMs giving you a total of 4 GBs as an installed quad of equal-sized DIMMs. You can then populate that other riser with four more DIMMs of equal size. You could install four 512 MB DIMMs (thus using the two you already have) giving you another 2 GBs for a total of 6 GBs.

There are three models of MacBook that comprise the 'macbook 4.1' category, and each of them a little different; however other than 'macbook 4.1' the other thing they have in common is they all are considered Early 2008. Two are white, one black, polycarbonate case, Core2Duo 2.1GHz, 2.4GHz white, 2.4GHz black.
So if you can determine which one, if any of these, is the model build year and spec you have, that would be handy. Did you tell whoever you spoke to the serial number of your computer, so they'd know by looking up the specs to see what the supported maximum RAM upgrade capacity was, and other minimum requirements to make any upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 at all?
If you have the serial number you can do a lookup to 'indentify by serial number' online, and use that information to determine if the computer needs even more RAM to take it past the minimum for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then get it ready to upgrade (via paid download from App Store, Snow Leopard gets you that far) and see what the next supported OS X full upgrade would be for the hardware limitations on that old MacBook.
If your MacBook IS a 4.1 build, the highest OS X it could run if it has the 2.4GHz cpu, is Lion 10.7.5. That would be an upgrade from the App store, available to OS X 10.6.8+ computers that access it online. And I kind of doubt how supported a newest iphone etc may be in lion.

The Apple? store or whoever you talked, to may have been as accurate as they could be without further research. Could be you may have a newer or older MacBook, which would change whatever later OS X it could run past 10.6.8. And to go past Snow Leopard, you need to download the last bits for 10.6.x to be able to go and get any later upgrade. The ones that may let a newest iphone or ipad work with it, are past SL10.6.8
Anyway, as you further verify the model build year and configuration specifications, report back.

Laserjet 6p added memory unknown???

I have a 6P and it has an installed memory card on one of the 3 available memory slots.I can not tell what the size of the memory card is and called the manufacturer who said that its model number is no longer available in their database. I held down the printer button and got the LaserJet 6P printed page but it says "PLC6 MEt Memory Enhancement technology 2 mbytes". I believe that is the internal installed memory and doesn't include the added memory card. Is there anyway I can determine the size of this added memory card? Also, when I print PDF files, it takes a very long time for each page to print...maybe a minute per page. If I switch to Raster, then the pages print normally. Any ideas on this issue as it only happens with PDF files that I have to print. Win7 Ultimate 64bit. using the Win7 print driver for HP LaserJet 6p.

As far as being confused...the only two options I have in the graphic mode is HP_GL/2 or Raster so I don't know why they are on my LaserJet if they are not suppose to be.I'm not sure what driver I am using...when I print out the test page it says PCL6 so I guess that is the driver installed. There is no other place that tells me that I can find. When I go to HP support there doesn't appear to be a way to get PCL5 as it refers me to Windows for printer drivers on my model.I guess I'll just have to remember to switch to Raster each time I do a PDF file.Thanks for all your help.

Why can I export (and import)the different sizes that I put in the "Responsive Design View"?

There is a way to store custom settings for responsive design.
You can create custom settings in the responsive design mode window.
You can hold down the Shift key and drag the borders via the (right border, bottom border, bottom right corner) resize icons to get specific dimensions and give the current custom setting a name to add them as a preset.
This will add the preset to the <b>devtools.responsiveUI.presets</b> pref that you can inspect on the <b>about:config</b> page.
Those settings are stored in JSON format.

Photo books - many different sizes not possible?

Hi. Does Elements 9 really offer only two sizes for photo books?
I want to produce a photo book with multiple pages. But Elements 9 (German version) offers only two sizes:
297 mm x 210 mm (A4)
300 mm x 300 mm
Above those two sizes i see the words “Print locally” (in German). These words “Print locally” cannot be changed. (I have an A4 printer installed.)
I want to produce a PDF file in Elements and send it to an online printing service. These online printing services print photo books in many different sizes from PDF (i will not send it via Elements’ own system). Does Elements 9 really offer only two sizes for photo books?
Am i seeing something wrong? I already changed the printer driver, checked preferences in Editor and Organizer, but found no way at all to get different sizes.

How can I match the line thicknesses in different sizes of the same font?

I'm working on a graphic that includes a handwriting font, and I'd like some text to be larger than others. The obvious issue is that when I make the font larger, the lines also get thicker. Has anyone found a good solution for this problem, other than limiting the design options to large font families with lots of weights? I do employee communications design work for a call center, so purchasing a big font set for internal communications isn't an option.
I've tried to "hide" some of the larger text's thickness by adding a white stroke to it, or by hiding the font edges with a mask, and I've also tried artificially "bolding" or adding a stroke to the smaller text. They all result in noticably distorted text, particularly around corners, and the results are particularly horrible when using something with texture, like a chalkboard font. I haven't had any better luck in Illustrator, either.
I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who wants to simulate the look of one person writing in different sizes with the same writing utensil. Beyond writing it myself (my handwriting is ugly), can you think of any solutions I haven't tried?

Thanks, I'll try the Min/Max and see if that works any better. The final output in this case is pixel based, for use in PowerPoint and in email headers. I often do my text work in Illustrator, but in this case I was trying to simulate writing on a chalkboard, so I started in Photoshop so I could see how it looked against the background as I worked. I actually face this challenge fairly frequently, though.
The team I design for is virtual, with over 700 people spread across the US and up into Canada. For that reason, I like to use the "hand drawn" look on occasion to bring some warmth and personal touch to the communications, to contrast with all the super-polished "high gloss" graphics they look at all day in their work tools. It's a real challenge to find text and artwork that matches well once scaled to fit my documents, especially since most of the vector-based artwork I find online has already been converted to outlines, so it doesn't retain the same stroke thickness when the images are scaled.
If anyone out there knows of an illustrator who doesn't convert their sketch-style graphics or fonts/typography to outlines before putting it up for use, either on Shutterstock or on any free site (since those are the ones I can use) I'd love to hear about it!

you can see that both livestreamer-twitch-gui and libffmpegsumo.so have different sizes in the generated package from the source tar. Everything else stays the same. Obviously this causes issues when trying to install and run the package. Any ideas what might be causing this problem? Thanks!

Thanks for the super prompt reply! Adding the no strip option solved my problem perfectly
I did look at trying to split up the binaries/libraries/etc. but that's complicated by the libudev.so.0 issue. The source tar includes a script to solve the issue, but it expects the real binary to be in the same folder. There's also a couple of scripts and additional files that are looked for right next to the binary. I think for now I'll just move it all to /opt/$pkgname.

How to share memory between different VMs?

I don't know if it is possible to share memory between different VMs. I know its easy for threads. Now my problem is that I want to start serveral applications which share only one copy of data, I don't know what's the right way to do that.

Not really sure what that has to do with it.
I believe the VMs for most common OSes use preemptive thread scheduling. I know windows does and I am rather certain that solaris/linux also do that.
A number of suggestions were made above for your problem. Memory mapped files allow multiple VMs if memory mapped files work for your VM/OS. Or you can use a single VM.
Given that your dataset is 1 gig or larger you might want to keep in mind the limitations of modern OSes. Windows for example will not normally allow any application to have a process space larger than 2 gigs. And on all OSes the VM heap limitations for 32-bit VMs are below 2 gigs by several hundred mega-bytes.

JLists, JScrollPanes different size when empty than when populate

I have a JList which is inside of a JScrollpane, which is inside of a panel who's layout is controlled with a GridBagLayout.
When I first start my program, and the JList is empty, the JList is the size I want. The GridBagLayout is set to fill both directions for the JList.
However, when I add an item to the JList, the GridBagLayout resizes the cell that the JList is inside of just slightly. How can I prevent this? It is obnoxious to use the program when the all the items on the screen change size a little bit when a JList goes empty as opposed to when it is populate.
Why does a JList (inside of a scrollpane) get a different size assigned to it by the grid bag layout when it is empty, as to when it has items in it?

Setting the preferred size on the scroll pane containing the list corrects 1/2 of my problem - The vertical space alloted by the grid bag layout no longer changes with an empty list compared to a populated list.

I still have problems with side by side lists which have items that can be moved back and forth.
I tried setting min size and preferred size on the scroll panes.
I tried putting each scroll pane into its own JPanel that had a Grid Layout, and then added the panels to my main panel with a grid bag layout, and weights set to .5 for horizontal expansion.
I even tried putting min, preferred, and max sizes on these panels.
I still cannot make the grid bag layout alot equal space to the left and right scroll panes.
Is there any way that I can get the space alloted between my components to be roughly

In Pages 5, why are page thumbnails different sizes?

So I'm using 5. And I must say I think it's brilliantly done after a long period of ******** about it. I guess I'm not asking of it anything it doesn't provide and what it does it does very well - though I'm puzzled by the behavior of selecting text via the keyboard.
Anyhow, that's not my question. I'm working with a long text document. I notice that as I work the page thumbnails become different sizes. It's subtle but it's clearly intentional. I reckon it's trying to tell me something but I don't know what. Haven't been able to find any info in the manual and was wondering if any of you clever people here might know. Thanks.

I'm not stupid. I know what a section break is, I know what a page break is. I'm a writer who has used innumerable word processing programs over the years and have been an IT worker for 10 years now.
I have a Pages document. It has no (or only one depending on your point of view), section(s). It has page breaks only. The pagination is set to start at "1" on the first page and proceed normally to the end of the document (300 or so pages). I am using Pages 5.5.2 on a brand new iMac. I have NONE of the previous or older versions/types of Pages on my computer.
The pages thumbnails on the side, do actually CHANGE SIZE randomly as I am editing the document. These differing sizes are NOT CORRELATED WITH THE BEGINNING OR ENDING OF SECTIONS. These size changes are also NOT CORRELATED WITH THE PAGE BREAKS (in case you were about to argue the similarity of page breaks and section breaks). As I work through the document and scroll up and down editing here or there, the size of the thumbnails RANDOMLY CHANGE SIZE. Sometimes this is correlated with me working on a section, sometimes I can work on a section and no change happens at all. The thumbnails that change size often change back again when I scroll back to them later on.
So please ... Try to act like a decent human being and either help out, or go away. STOP POSTING THAT WE ARE WRONG, when you DON'T in fact know we are wrong. STOP INSULTING ME by assuming I am stupid.

I have tried the different algorithm options such as fill_proportional etc and firefox is the only browser that displays correctly. If you have seperate XML file but with the same basic structure then you can change the XML a Spry dataset refers to and regenerate the spry region without reloading the full page.
So on my photo gallery page I can change the album the photos are shown from via the seturl sprydata function as below. dsPhotos being my Spry dataset that points to the relevant XML dataset with my image references and captions etc. My XML is actually dynamically generated from Picasa RSS feeds (and RSS feeds are XML) but the principle will be the same with your static XML.
First I add an event listener for when someone clicks on an album (the li tag within my div with the id "albums" holds a photo and title for each album.)

How can I use the print module to print different size images on one large "canvas"? An example would be in Photoshop, go to file>new, and create the size paper I want, and move images of different sizes onto it.
I was thinking the print module would do this automatically for me.

You can't, at present. It's been a requested feature, so we'll see if it shows up in a future version, but it's not there at present.
