Adding monitors to a laptop

i just added an additonal monitor to my laptop and i need a second one to total three. They all need to be capable of showing different windows at the same time, is this possible? I dont have another VGA outlet on my laptop, is there an adapter. Also, since I attached the 1st monitor, my computer will go to a blue screen and I have to shut it down and reboot. Is there, is there some other software that I need, none came with the monitor. Thanks

Adding a third monitor port will be difficult. You MIGHT be able to find an ExpressCard video card, or you can get a DisplayLink USB video adapter. The ExpressCard solution will perform much better than the USB solutions. The USB solutions will only be useful for basic word processing and spreadsheet tasks - you will NOT be able to play video on them or do anything 3D.
As to the bluescreen - no clue, shouldn't be happening. Update your video card drivers is about the only reccommendation I can give.

External HP Pavilion 23xi monitor cuts off laptop audio

I want to use my HP Pavilion 23xi monitor as an external monitor for my laptop (Sony Vaio, Windows 7). The laptop only has an HDMI connection, so I used an HDMI cable to connect it. The HP monitor works fine, but when it is connected, it cuts off all audio output on the laptop. There is no sound from the internal speaker on the laptop, or from the headphone connection.
If the HDMI connection automatically takes over the audio output, surely there should be at least a headphone socket on the PC? I can't change the connection type, as the laptop only has HDMI for an external monitor. Is there any configuration change that will fix this?

Hi,
As you mentioned, the HDMI sound may take over sound, disable HDMI sound may help. Pleae try:
Right click the speaker icon
Select Playback devices
Right click HDMI sound and disable it

External monitor hooked to laptop keeps going "dark"

The screen on my laptop cracked and so I have hooked it up to an external monitor HP 2009m via VGA. Laptop is HP Pavillion dv6 with Win7 home premium with all current updates. After I have been working for about 30 minutes, the monitor keeps going off and I have to hit the power button which usually brings it back, but sometimes I also have to use the source button to cycle back to an active monitor. The "power lockout" shows up occasionally and sometimes it just refuses to stay on for more than 30 seconds. I have used the factory reset, have held the power button for 15-30 seconds and unplugged it but it still keeps happening. I have disabled OSD and sleep and everything else I can think of. Starting to suspect it is something coming from the laptop, have never seen anything like this and scoured forums for simliar problems/solutions (hence the holding power and factor reset items I have already tried). I am starting to suspect it might be Netflix, although this seems odd, but it definitely happens more often if I am listening to Netflix in the background.
Anyway, I will reboot and it will be ok for awhile. Actually, until I start watching netflix again. Any other ideas? Driving me insane. Can I just get the monitor on my laptop fixed replaced? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

you can check in power option and monitor options too
>> start menu >> control panel >> Power options
you will see the list on the left column and you will find monitor options

PB G4 as added monitor

I just purchased a new iMac 20" and would like to also use my previous PGB4 as an added monitor, for applications other than graphics ones. I have no idea how to do that, any chance I could get some advice?
I also use a Wacom Intuos3 graphic tablet, is there anything I should do in regards to that?

External monitor shuts down laptop

Hey All,
I've got a weird problem that just came up. I've got a 17" external Apple flat screen monitor that I got off of eBay about 4 months ago. I bought the Apple DVI to ACD display adaptor and have been using the external as a second screen when I'm editing video and authoring DVDs. Everything was great until two nights ago when I plugged it in and all of a sudden it caused my laptop to shut down almost immediately after I connected it to my PowerBook (17" - about 1 year old). I checked it on my older 15" PowerBook and the same thing - shuts down right after plugging it in. I finally checked it on my even older G4 desk top and there were no problems - stayed on and didn't shut down. I've tried just about every variable - plug it in when I boot, plug it in after it's warmed up, charger plugged in - not plugged in, you name it, all of a sudden after 4 months it just stopped working with my laptops. Any suggestions would be grateful as I do alot of editing and the external monitor has made my life much easier because of the added real estate. Thanks in advance-

either you could try different adapter with your monitor - if it does not work, it's the display.
or you could take laptop and adapter to the store and ask them to connect it to different monitor - if it works like that, adapter is probably ok.

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming. HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

Dual monitor setup - need laptop on the left

I'm running a dual monitor setup - specifically a HP G72 laptop and a widescreen monitor. I use the monitor as the default and sometimes I want to use the Laptop as a secondary screen for watching TV etc. My desktop is Enlightenment, I just changed to it from Gnome. My issue is that I want the laptop to be on the left of the monitor - that's how it is physically positioned - but when I switch the Laptop screen on all my applications shift over to the laptop screen. I've written 2 scripts, attached to hotkeys, one to turn the laptop off and the other to turn the laptop on. The script to turn the laptop on is as follows:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal
--output VGA1 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --left-of LVDS1
This works fine, applications stay where they should be, except that the physical position is incorrect; VGA1 should be to the right of LVDS1 like this:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal
--output VGA1 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --right-of LVDS1
However, when I use the second script all of the applications shift to the laptop but at least the physical position is correct. The issue appears to be something to do with laptops, almost as though when it's a laptop the default monitor is forced to be on the left. Has anybody got any suggestions how to get around this issue?

This is due to your window manager treating the two monitors as a larger 'desktop' area - that combined with your specification of the pos=0x0 you are telling it to do this.
If you have only the VGA output on, the top left corner of the VGA monitor is 0x0. If you open a window, and it is placed 10 pixels in and down from the top left, it is at coordinates 10x10 in the x session. Then you turn on the laptop monitor and specify that the top left corner of the laptop monitor should now bo considered 0x0 - but nothing is done to move the windows, so the window with coordinates 10x10 is now near the top left of the laptop monitor.
I see 3 possible ways of acheiving what you want:
1) swap the "pos" parameters in your xrandr commands so that the monitor on the left is always at 0x0 and the one on the right is always at 1920x0 (or whatever). This will leave a large area of available X desktop that is not visible - I don't know how your window manager will treat this. It might try to map windows on the laptop screen space even though that screen is not on. I know openbox is easy to configure where it tries to place windows.
2) Keep the VGA monitor always at 0x0, but place the laptop monitor at a negative offset when you want it on. I don't actually know if X allows negative coordinates like that, but it's worth a shot.
3) Configure your window manager, or use a different window manager, so that it is aware of the two screens and treats them reasonably (e.g. moves windows when the desktop area is changed).

Dual monitor setup from laptop

I am a college student and have a Dell d630 laptop and am stuck with it until I graduate. I have many hours of programming still ahead and am very sick of this tiny screen. I like to have a minimum of 4 windows open at a time and would love a dual screen setup so I could cover more ground. I would like a setup where I don't need to use my laptop screen at all and just have 2 external monitors working together (I already have the monitors). I tried doing research to figure out my best option but I know nothing about video cards or monitor configurations so I didn't get far. Could someone recommend the product or setup i would need? thanks!

Well with a laptop, you're extremely limited as to video output capabilities, the best you're most likely going to be able to do is one external monitor.

Dual Monitors - Adding Monitor to HP Pavilion p7-1287c

HP Pavilion p7-1287c desktop. Trying to add 2nd monitor. Got: 8gb ddr3, Intell HD graphics, 1 tb hard drive, Windows 7 64-bit. Bought a PNY GeForce 210 graphics card. Installed card without drivers installed and both monitors screens black. Removed card, and tried to install drivers via CD and website, and they both say card not installed. Also, without card, installing driver via CD, incompatible with current drivers message results. Radio Shack cable splicer worked but I didn't care for the low resolution.
Thought it was simple to add and wanted to avoid paying a geek to do this, but after 4 trips to Best Buy, 1 to Radio Shack, still no solution. Getting somewhat educated, still determined and hopeful.

Did you try hooking up both monitors, one to the DVD-I port and the other to the VGA port on the back of your PC?
Sometimes that works.
Does the BIOS in your PC have a setting where you have to enable the PCIe video adapter?
On all of my HP business desktops, adding a video card automatically disables the onboard graphics but on some consumer models, you need to actually enable the PCIe video adapter with a setting.

2 External Monitors with W520 Laptop?

I'm running Windows 7 / 64 bit on my Lenovo W520 laptop.
Is there any way to connect two external monitors to the unit and have them show independent screens from Windows?

I tested this today. You can connect two external displays (1 VGA, 1 DisplayPort) without a docking station. The result is 3 independent displays - the ThinkPad LCD, the VGA monitor, and the DisplayPort monitor.

Experiment with 2 monitor and a laptop

I got 2 older monitors from a friend (Dell 1905fp) the other day. They are working as they should and so on. But is it possible to run these 2 on a laptop with only 1 VGA and 1 HDMI? The monitors do have 1 VGA and 1 DVI. I guess it's possible to get a USB to VGA device if it's necessery.
Since this is a laptop and i'm using it on other places then at home, is it possible to make the laptop to switch from using the laptops monitor to 2 monitors in some easy way? Using subtle atm, but planning to give dwm a try.
This is just an experiment, but it would be nice to make it work. If there is no way i'm probobly use the 2 monitors with an older desktop i got laying around somewhere...

Should be possible, HDMI to DVI adapters usually work without problems (the connectors are electrically the same).

You'll probably have many troubles getting it to work under Linux (I've heard of only a few successful attempts).

If it is an experiment I'll try to start from using a HDMI to DVI cable or adapter, because they are dirty cheap.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

External monitor with Optimus Laptop (ASUS EeePC 1015PN) does it work?

I am thinking about buying an additional monitor to use as an external display for my EeePC 1015PN. At the moment I use my laptop with a script that deactivates the Nvidia card at booting (not Bumblebee, but basically the same). Now I have read that the HDMI port only works when the Nvidia card is activated, at least in Windows. So I was wondering if it is the same for Linux, anybody here using a system like this?
I guess in the worst case I have to use the VGA port, since I am guessing it is working with the Intel graphics. But I want to be sure before I buy a new monitor and then find out that there is no support for it (yet?).

But the topic starter only mentiones VGA and DVI port, which both seem to work, but no HDMI. At least it is an indication that I possibly can use the VGA port with the Intel graphics card.

Unfortunately, no. You see, the way Bumblebee works is it sets up a second X server for the nvidia card and then VirtualGL is used to copy whatever the nvidia card draws there to the first X server which runs on the intel card. While it's possible to configure that second server to use the HDMI output, your mouse and keyboard are bound to the first X server.
Does your machine have a mini-DisplayPort? The asus 1215n does, and it's mini-DisplayPort is connected to the intel card, so one can use that for the external monitor.

That doesn't work actually. What works is the other way around - DVI-I output on the card into a VGA monitor. It's because DVI-I can output either an analog VGA or a digital DVI signal. But a VGA output is always only analog, not possible to convert to digital. Not with an adapter. There are converter boxes, but they have their price.
Don't modern monitors have VGA inputs anymore? It's not ideal, but it is a picture.

Multi Monitor messes up laptop screen?

I have a 15" Retina MB Pro, got it when they first came out. Had the display replaced with the Samsung after the ghosting issue. But this happened randomly before that, and now it's every single time.
I have a 24" 1920x1080 external monitor I connect to via HDMI. I also have, on my laptop screen, some icons on the left edge, top edge, and right edge, so I can hit a few things here and there without having to minimize whatever I'm working on at the time if I need to do something else. These are mostly just some folders and text icons, not apps.
But what happens is that when I plug in the external monitor, the icon positions change. And it's not consistent. Sometimes they change so it's like the external monitor is just part of a virtual monitor, and my top row on the laptop moves to the middle of the laptop and extends across the middle of the external display. Sometimes when I plug in the external monitor, my "actual" desktop shrinks up to a small spot on the top left, like some crunched version of my actual desktop. Other times that happens, as well as getting a small silver plane shape from what would be the "dock" on that tiny screen. Now, regardless of what happens, my entire screen on the laptop is still usable, resolution isn't changing, and the entire desktop on the 1920x1080 external monitor is usable - it's just the desktop that gets totally screwed up as far as the icons go. If I unplug the monitor, they revert back to "normal" on the laptop display.
It used to just happen once in a while. Then it started happening more often, and now it's to the point where I may have to unplug and replug the HDMI 70 or 80 times to try to get the desktop to not screw up like this. At this rate I'll wear out the HDMI port in a month or so.
Any suggestions? One of my zillion google searches for this turned up someone who specified a plist file to delete, which I did, but that didn't solve the issue...
If it were at least CONSISTENT on way or another (screwed up across both screens, or always giving me that mini fraction of my latpop desktop on the top left of the retina display) it wouldn't be as bad as this, espeically since sometimes it *DOES* work as expected - I plug my external monitor in, and there's the second desktop waiting for me to drag stuff to it.

Thanks for any ideas, this is driving me absolutely nuts since I waste so much time on it every day. I'm about ready to nuke the laptop and rebuild everything from scratch but that's such a pain, and would just make me think of my windows days when I used to do that far more often than I do now...
MBP is current (10.8.3) wiht all updates, 8GB RAM and quad i7 processer model.

try to check the monitors maximum capabilities, apple can output 1920 by 1200
also check for the wide settings as well if the monitor is a wide one.
also, there are some issues with regards to windows running on mac missing drivers is most likely your problem see link of intel http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-022544.htm#native_resolution
mac on the other hand supports the full 1920x1200 output since its their product
