Adding more devices to PCI slots
Hi all,
My G4 AGP specs tells me my Mac's 3 PCI slots are 64bit, 33mhz. I have two slots available and one slot I added a 4port USB card working great. Just curious but what exactly is 64bit, 33mhz? What does it mean? What can I add to these slots besides another USB card, firewire card, and/or external HDD?

64 bit refers the the memory addressing architecture of the PCI bus. It is of consequence when choosing a PCI card not only for compatibility, but also for enhanced performance characteristics of 64 bit architecture. What the 64 bit PCI bus allows, is sequential read, write, and invalidate (clear)commands to occur in a single operation. This, of course, translates to performance.
33MHz is the clock frequency of the bus, or, more commonly thought of as, the speed of data transfer through the bus. This, when combined with the memory addressing architecture, yields the data rate of the bus.
The theoretical limits of the PCI bus translates to 264 MB/s for 64-bit @ 33MHz or 132 MB/s for 32-bit @ 33MHz.
The 64 bit slots are backwards compatible to 32 bit architecture as well.
PCI cards can have many different duties. External interface bridges such as USB 2.0, FW 400, FW 800 and eSATA are common for PCI expansion.
Hard drive controller cards for both ATA and SATA drives are also common.
Other types of controllers such as SCSI and hardware RAID are available.
Sound cards are also common for PCI expansion.
Video capture, ethernet, wireless, TV tuners, modems, even controllers with a hard drive mounted to the PCI card board are some of the expansion devices that are available.

We recently purchased a Mac Mini to use as a dedicated computer for a microscope. It'll be connect to the camera and to the internet. We're replacing an old G3. And we're planning on simply using the mouse/keyboard/monitor that was existing in the lab.
When the Mini arrived, my excitement turned to disappointment when I realized the camera uses a PCI cable (the cable is labeled E89980-A). So I searched for adapters that would work to plug in the PCI cable into a USB or firewire slot. I found adapters that would work, but they are all advertised to be used for printers, not for cameras. Example.
I contacted the manufacturer, Diagnostic Instruments, and they told me that it is a proprietary PCI card and must be installed in the new computer.
Is there no other option? Would an adapter to USB card work? Do I need to buy a Mac with an slot for expansion?
I'm pretty embarrassed if that's the case because I am the one who did all the decision-making and convinced the boss to get a new computer.Hello,
The cable you linked to on the Computer Geeks site is a USB to Parallel cable. That cable is going to be useful only for devices that are designed to plug into a parallel printer port.
The device you are trying to use comes with it's own PCI expansion card. The fact that it's connector may look like a printer port's connector is irrelevant.
If it requires that PCI expansion card to function, then you will have no choice but to buy a machine with a PCI expansion slot.
A parallel port / USB to Parallel cable will not provide you with the same function that the PCI controller they supply does.
And, there are no USB or FireWire to PCI expansion slot adapters available that I know of. The two designs are so dissimilar that it really isn't a practical product.
It would be technically possible. But, it would basically amount to an external case with slots and it's own controller. Then, a cable to connect it to the Mac. And, drivers to communicate with that external box that holds the card.
I am not aware of any such device that exists to run PCI slots off the USB or FireWire ports. But, if one did exist, it would likely be way out of your reasonable budget.
Additional expansion slot cabinets have been available for PC's for years. They function similar to how I described above. Except, that they plug directly into an existing ISA, PCI, etc. port inside the host computer. And, generally, they have sold in the $1000 to $5000 price range depending on the year and manufacturer.
Unfortunately, the new Macs are not shipping with standard PCI slots. The Mac Pro is the only model with Expansion Slots. And, they have newer PCI standards (PCI Express) that are evolutions of the PCI interface. But, you cannot simply plug a standard PCI card into them.
So, if this device is particularly important, I see your most viable options being:
1) Keep using the older machines for that task
2) Buy a newer Microscope that will interface with the FireWire ports.

Despite adding more storage = 20GB my devices tell me that I can not take any photos/video, why would this be?
Because the issue is that you don't have sufficient available space on your phone, not that you don't have enough space in your iCloud account. Adding storage in iCloud does not give you more space on your phone.
You can check your available space by going to Settings>General>Usage. You'll need to delete or sync some data off your phone to freee up more space. -
PCI slot in Thinkpad Dock II unusable
Hello, I have a Thinkpad a22m 2628-S1U which can be used with the Thinkpad Dock II. To avoid feeling tempted to buy a new laptop I bought that dock as well as an ATI Radeon x1550 to put in its PCI slot. These items were said to be compatible on http://thinkwiki.org the Linux thinkpad wiki.
Now that I've tried it out, I'm starting to think the contributors to that site were windows users who didn't read the topic. Starting up docked gave the following lspci output (notice there's no radeon card):

So a few parts of the dock are getting detected but not the most important parts. The error that I think is related to the absence of the graphics card appears in dmesg. Look for the part about "cannot allocate resource region":

I've tried multiple options in the BIOS. You can select AGP or PCI as the card for the root display device. The default is PCI so if there's a docked PCI card at POST, the BIOS will use that for the root display device... otherwise it will use the built in card. You can also select the root display device as LCD or CRT or both. The default is CRT so if there is an external monitor that's where the bootloader menu and such will appear, otherwise the laptop's own display gets used. Even if I've understood these incorrectly, all combinations yield a PCI video card that is not detected by lspci.
I've also tried loading the module dock right after thinkpad_acpi. It loads and appears in lsmod but it doesn't help the situation at all. It also doesn't add a dock file to /proc/acpi/ibm. I also tried passing pci=routirq to the kernel, whatever that does and I've tried changing the four PCI related IRQ numbers in the BIOS and this has not helped.I did upgrade the kernel yesterday and it caused the syntax of dmesg to change somewhat. The strangest thing has also happened recently. The laptop refuses to use its own display when starting up in the dock unless an external monitor is plugged in. If a CRT is plugged in, the docked laptop starts up and shows the splash screen on its LCD. If no CRT is plugged in, turning on the docked laptop results in a blank screen. This might have happened because I fiddled with the BIOS which would make alot of sense but resetting the BIOS to default configuration hasn't fixed the problem. I also could have broken a pin but the last thing I remember doing before this happened is running cat /sys/module/snd_ac97_codec/parameters/power_save. It's one of those untouchable virtual files that causes a kernel oops when I try to read it sometimes. I have no idea how this would break the dock but it doesn't matter. Even if using the dock requires some external monitor jazz, I still want the card to be detected and it isn't.
Sorry to bombard you with obscure information but I don't know where else to turn. I've asked on the thinkpad mailing list and IRC channel to no response and I've seen one other "knowledgeable person" mention these errors on the LKML. I will subscribe to that and ask him too. I'm just very surprised... this gave me the impression that what I wanted to do would work trivially and automatically on Linux and now I'm finding that it's broken for me and possibly every other Linux user. I will seek out thinkpad users from around here with all types of models and distros and see if they have any luck. So far Arch, Arch install CD and an ancient Ubuntu install CD don't work here. If anyone has this and can test it or can decipher some ideas from the posted output (new kernel parameters, new kernel config flags, new udev rules, new modules?) I'd really appreciate it. -
600E, Win98SE doesn't see PCI slots
The PCI slots in my 600E Win98SE don't see adapter cards. This happened after my wireless router was reconfigured. The wireless card, which had been working fine, wouldn't reinstall, even with driver updates. Initially the installation wizard would see the adapter but couldn't find the drivers, then it couldn't even see the card in the slot. Now the slots don't see a USB 2.0 adapter either. The device manager says the slots are working properly, and the cards work fine in my T21 w2k. Can anyone straighten this out?

That's kind of what I figured too. The card I have is a piece of crap anyway, I just didn't want to spend more money unless I absolutely had to. But with all the headaches I've had in the last week over my new system, it's a small price to pay to get the last remaining problem solved (and, let's not forget that I will have a much better card now, too).

The two PCI-Express Ports are tied directly to the processor. Of course, both are x16 ports in size, but not in terms of bandwidth. The CPU is the deciding factor here. I would not call it a "limiting" factor. The board itself cannot to anything in this matter because its chipset does not provide a PCI-E interface to begin with (well, at least not the kind we need). -
PCIe Slot Speeds - G5 Dual Core 2.0

I've been in touch with FirmTek support about a possible conflict - irregularity with regard to a SeriTek/2ME4-E installed in slot number 3.
They're claiming;
"The PowerMac G5 Dual Core PCIe slots 2 and 3 share bandwidth. If you install a fast card in slot 3 and a slower FireWire/USB card in slot 2, the bandwidth of both slots is reduced to the speed of the slowest card. This improper configuration could easily cause the issues you are experiencing."
Unless I'm missing something, according to this diagram, I believe slots 2 & 4 share the same bandwidth? Or it would appear that the MIDDLE PCIe slot is the faster of the two others - yes?

I'm still leaning on replacing the SeriTek/2ME4-E with a Multi-Port FW800 card, since my other drives are all connected via FW800. Can't take the chance of having additional data corrupted or deleted.

The Firmtek controller can accommodate (max with no allowance for overhead) 384 MB/s bandwidth, but a FW800 controller can only accommodate max with no allowance for overhead) 98 MB/s.
As well, with a bit of research on the HyperTransport link which connects the Mid Bridge to the North bridge, I found an interesting comment in a HyperTransport Technology Consortium document which suggests that I/O devices of high latencies (slow) can have a dramatically adverse effect on the overall performance of the bus
A problem relative to...the presence in a system of a very slow I/O device that is the target of posted requests. This situation can cause other registers in the system to experience *large and unpredictable latencies*.
This seems to support the, albeit poorly phrased, claim by Firmtek that the combination of the devices may be the source of the issue.

In comparing two Supermicro mb's, the X8SAX and the X8STE, i noticed that the X8SAX has two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots while the X8STE has one x8 PCIe 2.0 in a x16 slot.
So... my question is... If i'm going to use a high end graphics card like the GTX 260 or a lower end Geforce 9500 GT, buying the X8STE mb would be a mistake because both cards are x16 and putting them in the x8 using a x16 slot would degrade the speed in half - correct?Harm,
Of the Supermicro i7 single socket mb's, the X8STE would have been ideal with 1-x16PCIe, 3-x4PCIe and 2-PCI slots if the x16PCIe slot had 16 lanes and the mb had no graphics. Also, With the X8SAX, if you are using double wide graphic card, you are covering up a PCIe slot leaving you with ony one more on the mb.
But why use two video cards? What is the value added?
I like many editor's, I use dual monitors during the video production process so i can see Pr, Ps, Ae or Sb at the same time. I find it more productive and convenient. I have been toying with the idea of getting a third monitor. But with this mb, it would leave me with no usable slots other than the two 64bit PCI-X slots.
Although Supermicro mb's are great, I own an older dual Xeon NLE system, they just don't any boards - currently - that satisfy me. Both boards leave you wanting a little. But I would agree with you that the X8SAX is still the better choice.
In any case, would you agree that putting an x16PCIe graphics card in the X8STE with only 8 lanes in the x16PCIe slot would have been a waste?
Just for curiosity, what Supermicro single i7 mb would you have chosen? -

That's what you should completely remove the mobo count the stand offs and make sure there are no extras or other objects shorting the mobo.
Check device manager and make sure all drivers are installed.
If you can get you hands on a better psu try it, just to be sure.(although if it runs the gpu on the other mobo its probably alright to skip)
Remove and inspect the cpu and socket/ re-seat the cpu
If all that turns up nothing then yes, its probably the board.
Well, I actually decided to try my GPU on my old Mobo, right now is working. I did all of that and of course, installed the chipset drivers, perhaps hoping that it would make the mobo recognize the PCI slot, which didn't happen. Of course I really much appreciate your help, but since all the options above didn't fix the problem, it turns out that I got a defective mobo, which is sad. Just to make myself sure, Im gonna try to get another PSU, but I don't think is gonna make any difference, since my old MB is more demanding than the new one. You are free to close this thread. [VIA Series] PT880 Neo - 2 dead PCI slots?
Scanning through the forums, I didn't see anything relevant so here goes.
I bought my board not too long ago and have been slowly adding peripherals to my system. I try to spread things out when choosing a PCI slot for a new card. Well, looking at my sig, I have discovered that two of my PCI slots are dead.
When I say dead, I mean that I'll install a card there (previously never installed), boot up to Windows, and wait for the Found New Hardware dialog. I think that this is slightly broken, so I go to the Device Manager and none of my new items show up with uninstalled or installed drivers. I crack my case, move the card to one of the working slots, and everything is dandy.
For the record, I refer to PCI 1 as the closest PCI slot to the AGP slot (most central physically on the motherboard). Inheritently, PCI 5 is the slot closest to the corner of the motherboard. I am having problems with slots 2 and 3.
I am hoping that there is a dip switch or a rule similar to memory slot usage that will fix this problem. I have not found a solution yet and am hoping that someone here can help.

K8N Neo2 Plat. PCI Slots DEAD
Hey guys - i just realized i have a big problem with my Neo2 Platinum..and it has happened on all 3 Neo2's i've had, so i definitely don't think its a motherboard problem...either way, i have ONE PCI card...its a LaCie Firewire800 Interface Card. I put it in and my windows will NOT recognize it. Very strange. I had been assuming until now that the card was just defective, however, i stuck the card into a friend of mines computer and sure enough, booted into windows and it detected it! So its not the card, just my PCI slots...i've tried it in more than one slot too, all to the same effect..unfortunately, i don't have any other PCI cards at the time to attempt to put in to see if it will make a difference...but in the mean time, does any of you have any idea what i can try to make this card work? I current;y have 6GB of RAM in my MacPro and want to add a bit more.
Right now I have 4 X 512MB strips and 4 1GB strips for a total of 6GB
I was thinking of adding 2 X 2GB strips to replace 2 of my 512MB strips which would give me 4 1GB strips, 2 2GB strips and 2 512MB strips filling all slots on both risers.
What is the proper order in which to place the memory strips? 2GB strips in slots A&B on the top riser and the rest paired wherever... or is there a specific order these need to be in?
Should I remove the 2 remaining 512MB strips altogether and leave 2 empty slots?
I have heard that adding more memory improperly can in some cases actually slow things down.
My MacPro is running the 32BIT EFI... but should be able to address all RAM up to 4GB per core. ( 12GB total)2006: symmetrical quad sets are ideal.

There is no "per core." You can have up to 32GB (8 x 4GB).

X121e, other uses for WWAN mini PCIe slot?
Does anyone know whether the mini PCIe slot in the X121e that the optional WWAN card goes in can be used for other cards?
I'm aware of the whitelist, which had been suggested may only apply to wireless devices (e.g. WLAN and WWAN) - although I'm not sure whether that's certain (i.e. doesn't apply for non-wireless devices).
I've heard some people have tried mSATA devices in this slot with no success (which isn't suprising as whilst mini PCIe is physically compatible with mSATA it isn't electrically, and so you need mSATA support in the hardware). However I've been wondering about mini PCIe SSD cards and whether they would work. I've heard that they're not brilliant when compared to mSATA devices - however I can't afford to get a large SSD for this machine, and in general, people don't need to store all their MP3/videos on SSD, as the best benefit comes with the OS and applications being stored on the SSD, with user data being fine on an HDD. My using a mini PCIe SSD, I could potentially put the OS etc onto a cheaper/smaller SSD, with the hard drive for 'data'.
Has anyone tried this, or any other non-wireless mini PCIe devices in the X121e?
ThanksMight be of interest to you that I tried a half mini pcie micro sd card reader in my X301. It would allow 64gb if it worked. However I got an error message on boot up - can't remember exactly what it was. Other than that the only other option was the intel turbo memory which was of little benefit to me.

Is anyone using the full height PCIe slot in the x120e?
Nothing I put in there is recognized in Windows 7.
If I move the current 1/2 height wireless to the full slot, it still does not work so I know it's not the card I'm using (which works in the 1/2 height slot).
I've tried a new wireless card and an HD decoder card and nothing works in the full slot.I *think* it is designed solely for a WAN type card, so no dice for me.
I've tried a wireless card (Intel 5300) and a Broadcom HD decoder with no luck.
I've even moved the 1/2 height card that came with the device into the full height slot and it simply isn't recognized.
No BIOS errors, but the device (no matter what I put there) ever shows up in Windows.
The parts list lists it as a "WAN" slot, so I guess that's all that will work which is a horrible horrible disapointment.
