Adding more drives to my x-Raid

hello,
I'm running out of space on my x-raid, and need to upgrade it asap. right now, there are only 4 x 180GB drives in it. my question is do I have to use the same capacity drives to expand my raid? I'd rather go with a larger hard drives if possible of course, but need to make sure it will be able to handle it.

Ok, as I've been reading more and more, I'm realizing that I know nothing about RAIDs on Apple I've done some on PCs but it was easier Oh MACs
anyway, here's my situation:
I have an x-serve raid with 4x180GB drives in the right side. Not sure why it's built that way, but it is, the way it is. I have only 25 GB of free space left. So I'm trying to figure out my best options. Originally I was thinking of adding 3 more drives 250GB each to the right side, and then merge them together with the main portion of my RAID. However, I'm reading now, there's a change I need to reformat my main slice which is not going to work for me. The type of the file system that I have is MAC OS extended (journaled), which as far I understand means it's HFS+ so I can't add more space on a fly and need to reformat my main slice?
If the answer for that is I do need to reformat, I'd rather start building a new RAID on the left side (say 4x250GB). In this case as far as I understand I'd have 2 standalone raids, which is completely fine, I'm not looking to merge them together, as long as I can use them both for file sharing. So my question is "can I?"
If I can, I guess I'd rather move some stuff from my main RAID to the new one.
Advises, comments are very welcome!

  • X-Raid question about adding more drives

    Hi Guys.
I am running an X Server (10.3.8 dual 2GHZ PPC G5)with an X-Raid attached. Right now it is only half full with a RAID5 volume that is my main file server.
My question is can i add three 500GB drives into the empty slots of my X-Raid and congiure them as another RAID5 volume without killing my current drives setup on the X-Raid?
    Thanks for any help.

You can do it hot. The 3 drives you insert will not affect the exiting RAID set in any way whatsoever. The Xserve RAID supports up to 3 RAID sets per RAID controller (each controller handles one "half" of the array -- so 7 drives). What you're doing is very common.
The only thing I say is that you need to be sure you replace the 3 unused "blanks" and don't accidentally eject one of the drives that's already part of a RAID set. This should be pretty obvious as the "live" drives have blue and green lights, and the blanks have none, but other than that, it's a cakewalk.

  • Adding More Than 2 Internal Hard Drives

Anyone have any help they can give me on upgrading my power supply? I've read on other threads that this is a power supply issue when adding more drives.
    G5 Jive mounting kit:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/ENCG53HD/
with this Serial ATA Host Controller Card (will buy from Amazon or whoever has it available):
    http://www.welovemacs.com/tsataiix44.html
and 3 or these Western Digital 1TB hard drives:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD10FYPS/
any suggestions/comments are welcome... i.e. Hitachi drives vs. Western Digital or 8port vs 4 port SATA card

I too have been looking into this and my decision was/is this. eSATA Card and external enclosures. Not only are you looking at Power Supply issues but HEAT as well. The G5 is still a nice fast machine but they are like heaters when running hard, add to what's already in there creating heat and you might end up with a nasty situation. You would need a card anyway and with the internal drive mounting adaptors running 100.00 and up the external box option is only 50.00-60.00 dollars more and you have no heat/power concerns and even more expandability if you need.
    Hope that helps.

  • Adding Hard Drive: RAID option

I'm going to add a 500GB drive to my Mac Pro and I'd like it to be joined to the existing as one volume. What is the most common RAID option to use for that?
    Thanks!
    ~TPS

You can start by reading this: RAIDs.
If you use the software RAID supported in OS X then you can create either a striped or mirrored RAID. What are typically referred to as RAID 0 or RAID 1. In addition you can create a RAID 1+0 which is essentially a mirrored RAID or two striped RAIDs.
If you create a RAID with your existing drive then all the data on your existing drive will be erased so be sure to backup your existing drive before creating the RAID. Using a RAID as a startup volume is not a particularly good idea.

  • Adding Internal Drives to G5

I need more space on my G5.
Currently I have the original 80G Hard drive that came with it, and an added 200G internal drive. I work with video and am constantly having to delete old projects in order to make room for new ones.
As I understand it, the G5 will only allow for 2 internal drives. One being the start up drive (which should hold all applications/Library/Ect.) and then another "scratch" drive for actual projects (i.e. video/audio capture). Am I correct?
I am a novice still trying to understand what/what not to put where. All I know is that I work with hours of video and am in desparate need of more space. So any suggestions/advice you may have will be greatly appreciated.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.6 Ghz Power PC 1.25 G Memory

    Trade up ;-(
You are working with a G5 1.6 single cpu. No PCI-X, and PCI bus has a bug that limits disk writes to 75MB/sec with any PCI card interface (SATA, SCSI etc).
I would forget the 80GB for work and put it aside for now, and invest in 500GB drive. Would be nice to build an external SATA RAID.
There are some internal dual and triple drive bracket kits that run off SATA controllers as well - you ought to have ample room for one (or two).
But I always thought that working with video it was very helpful to have dual cpu or better.
Any investment in SATA drive would help now and later, but I would look at G5 2.3 Dual Core or something too.
A boot drive, media drive, scratch can be a drive or drives set up in RAID. Even a FW800 and FW400 for backup, archive, capture etc.
Some drives like Seagate 7200.10 750GB would be nice, but you need to upgrade to 10.4.6+. Also, my guess is that you would notice things run better with 2-4GB RAM. Definitely more than 1.25, probably double that.

  • Humming sound like a ground loop with added hard drives

I get a humming low freq Hum from my MacPro from adding or added hard drives. I am using Seagates 320's ( 3 - non raid ). The MP is under my desk and I think some may not hear what I do if sitting on a desktop.
I can't figure out if it's a ground loop issue, more than one drive spinning at the same speed or some mechanical isssue, like metal to metal contact.
Just one drive with the OS. The Hum if still there is not something I am aware of or bothers me. But your room must be quiet to hear ir best.

As I mentioned before, some people will not hear the "hum" if the MP is sitting on your desk ( or one hard drive ) . Mine is under a large desk that is 6' long, which kinda amplifies the sound and creates a sound box for the low freq hum. Some what like adding a subwoofer. But when you add one or more drives it will Hum and I think I know the cause.
One is there is no isolation ( ie rubber ) between the hard drive mounting system, the (metal) inside frame and outer (metal) case. This causes the MP to become or act like a tuning fork.
For those who do hear the hum sound, you can take both hands on either side of the MP and "squeeze" the sides and hear the sound get lower. Take your hands off and hear it louder. So the whole MP is vibrating or creating "noise" or low freq Hum ( tuning fork) .
The problem is some what resolved with using 2 drives if you mount one in bay 1 and the second in bay 4. ( not side by side ) In other words, the sound is amplified to a higher degree if you have matching drives ( non raid ) next to eachother.
This issue will drive you nuts if you have it or can hear it. The MP stock 2.66 thats a month old is what I have. Maybe some other Macs don't show this same sound.
Whats interesting is the metal case, both outer and inter being connected as a "rigid unit" is causing or lets say, making matters worse. The other of which I have not plotted the freq, I think is around 60hz which just so happens to be the same as your " AC power". So the humming could sound like a ground loop, when in fact the sound originates from the hard drive and is being magnfied by the rigid non insulated MP that might be inhancing it's own "resonate frequency"and acting like a tuning fork.
Now if I am right and the MP is reacting as a tuning fork. What is the solution? I don't really know. And I have not tried any so called fixes other than switching bays. I have some ideas. But only those that would not cause a warrenty issue.
I hope Apple will take a look at the issue and see if a real engineer can first identify the issue and come up with a solution.

  • A problem about the policy of RMS which is added more than 500 principals

    Hello specialists ,
I've a question about RMS , when I added more than about 500 principals (users & groups ) into a policy in the RMS , it will report an error for any operation about the policy , and I find the error message as followed (for theconvenience, I paste all of the logs in the weblogic).
We have tested all of our environments : Weblogic , JBoss , Websphere , each of them  makes the same mistake . those operations include : try to open the documents protected by this kind of policies , to disable or enable the policies, to look the detail from the "adminui" . when decreasing the principals for this kind of policy to almost 450 (I am not sure the clearly number) with java code , the results will be ok .
So anyone can help me ? It's really very important for us , becuase our customer refused to pay the left money of this project till this problem is resolved . and I have reported this problem to the Enterprise Support in Indian (the case is :181916446), but , obviously , it seems they are burning my patience  . At the same time , I think it's a problem of the product , I think the SQL is really very bad ,at least , not so good .
Any help will be very appreciated !

  • I want to add another hard drive to my exsisting RAID 0 setup - how can i do this?

Hi all, wonder if somebopdy can help me
I have my computer setup as follows:
    1 x SSD - used for my O/S - windows 7 ultimate 64bit
2 x 1 TB hard drives - WD black series in a RAID 0 arrar
Now Im slowly but surely running out of space on the RAID ( the two hard drives) so im thinking about purchasing 2 x more of these exact same hard-drives to add to the RAID but iv never done this before and obviously I cannot lose any of my data currently
saved on this RAID - as iv deleted everything I don't use or want
what is the best way to back all my data up and how would I add 2 x new hard drives to my RAID 0  so that it will include 4 x 1 tb hard drives in total
thank you hope somebody can help

    Hi,
You have to know that with a RAID 0 (striped set), if any drive in the array fails for any reason, you will loose all data on the volume. In this case, the more drives you add, the greater the chance for failure--with increased I/O.
Being you already have a RAID 0 setup with two drives, you cannot just break the stripe--you will loose all data if not backed up.
To effectively add another drive to your RAID 0 implementation, you will have backup your machine--making an image is the best option--break the array, add the drive and then restore your image.
About how to extend the raid 0, you may need some third-party tool to complete. Here is some references for you:

  • Using separate drive for OS and RAID for data

We have an xServe with 3x1Tb drives set up as RAID 5. I read in one of the forums that it's not a particularly good idea to create separate OS/Apps and data volumes on it. Is there a way therefore of utilising a fourth drive and direcly attaching that as the bootable OS/Apps drive?
Is this possible? Is it a viable solution?

    Hi
Yes it is possible, as a viable solution? It depends? I've done this a number of times with an external firewire drive that is the boot drive. FW800 is obviously quicker than FW400. Whichever it is you are adding latency nevertheless. Ultimately its better to do this with internal drives as they will always be quicker which you will see in improved server performance.
What I have done in the past is to RAID Mirror or Stripe (using DU) 2x500GB as well as 2x750GB and even 2x1TB drives. The other bay has a single 80GB drive as the boot drive. Clone this boot drive periodically to an external FW drive. If the boot drive fails, boot from the cloned FW drive. You can run the server like that until a replacement drive can be fitted. Clone back and you should be back to normal.
As you have a RAID card installed, for RAID 5 you need a minimum of three drives, there is not much scope as you have already filled up all your bays.

  • IbookG3 wont recognize memory stick or burn disks after adding more memory

I recently added more memory to my old ibook. Now when I put my memory stick in either USB ports nothing comes up on the desktop. I also can't get anything to burn onto disc. Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried removing the RAM to see if those capabilities return to the iBook?
How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available on it?

  • IDVD 7.0.2 crashes when adding more movies

I am using iDVD 7.0.2, because I have the old 17" Mac laptop.
The iDVD crashes when adding more than one movie and trying to save the project.
    Any idea about that ?

I'm assuming you really mean 20GB's or more of hard drive space rather than RAM memory .... only because I don't anyone on this forum with 20GB's or more of random access memory.
This is directly from the iDvd Help Menu:
    Best Performance
When you select Best Performance, iDVD encodes your video in the background as you’re working on your project instead of waiting until you burn it. This can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to create a finished DVD. This is a good choice if your project is an hour or less in duration (for a single-layer disc). You’ll finish your project more quickly, and the encoding quality will be excellent for the amount of video you have.
Best Performance encodes your video at a preset bit rate that produces great quality for projects that can easily fit on your disc. If you have a larger project that needs to be squeezed onto a disc, you should select one of the other encoding options.
To check menus open the drop zone editor and check menu info.
Motion Menus in general are not intended for long durations. Suggestion: Keep loops short and sweet (including any added audio).
This too is directly from iDvd's Help Menu:
The menus in a DVD can include background movies that play while the menu is showing as well as buttons that play video (called “motion buttons”). The total allowable playing time for video in all such “motion menus” in a DVD is 15 minutes. If total playing time is longer than 15 minutes, you will not be able to burn the DVD. You can keep track of the playing time for all menus in a project in the Project Info window.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Adding 146GB drives to StorEdge 3310

I have a StorEdge 3310 with 6 72GB drives in it (RAID 10). Customer wants to add a pair of 146GB drives to increase capacity. Is there any issue with having disparate sized drives in a 3310 RAID array?

    I have a 3310 disk array with 12 72gb drives ,
configured raid 5 , 1 hot spare...The host side scsi
    parms are max queded i/o 256, luns /host 32, max #
    concurent host lun 128, cyl/head/sector
    cyl-65536,head-64, sector-255...... NO problems.
I have added a 3310 expansion unit to the original
disk array. expansion unit also configured raid5 ,
one local spare. sd.conf also update. I am able to
newfs, mount and use the disk. however it odd
compared to othe disks when using the solaris format
command. questions are the OK for 146gb drives. I
noticed that one of the options for cyl/head/sector
was variable. does anyone have experience using the
    option???

  • Has anyone tried a Western Digital SATA RAID hard drive on a non-RAID controler?

Because of a compatability problem, I want to try a different brand of SATA II drive on my non-RAID motherboard. The WD RAID drives have great specs but I don't know if they will work. WD says they are ONLY for RAID and not to put them on a non-RAID board. My theory is that they will be more reliable over the long term because they are a heavier duty drive.
Has anyone tried this and if so, what were the results?

I think there was some confusion about what I am asking. It is definately not a duplication of my other post and some of the information in that other post is incorrect because I JUST found out that my motherboard controller IS a RAID controller even though I am not using it as one. I will correct that when I am finished with this post.
The other post was about a specific model of Maxtor drive that doesn't work on my motherboard. This post is about Western Digital. The only reason that I even mentioned the word RAID in my previous post is that there is a known compatibility problem with RAID controllers and that drive. I wanted to emphasize that my problem was not the one of that known compatibility problem, but because it is a RAID controller, it might be that problem.
When you use the motherboard's controller as a non-RAID controller, you do format the drives individually, not as a RAID. I know that because I did it that way, not realizing I even had the option of using RAID on this board. That works fine on one model of Maxtor hard drive and does not work at all on the other model of Maxtor hard drive.
What I want to know now is: Will the Western Digital RAID drives will work on a non-RAID controller. The controllers on my add-in card is not RAID. Also, will that drive work on my motherboard's controller even though it is not being used as RAID.
Here is a link to the WD site's description of one such drive. There are several other WD RAID drives, this is just one example...  http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=238&Language=en It does not state whether or not they will work well in a non-RAID environment.

  • Adding hard drives to m9000 desktop

    Hi,
I've got an HP m9000 pavilion desktop.  it's already got 2 3.5 inch hard drives in it.  I'd like to add more.  I don't want to add a Pocket Media Drive or a Media Drive.
There seems to be one 5.25 inch slot available which i could use with a mounting bracket.  That will work for the 3rd hard drive... but where can I mount a 4th?  Can i mount a regular drive in the Media Drive bay?  Can I remove the pocket media drive enclosure and stick a 3.5 inch drive in there?
    suggestions?
    thanks,
    addodd

I've added larger drives to older systems in which the compatibility matrix wasn't updated and they've worked fine. So long as the drive types are the same, you shouldn't have any issues. The 3500 is a pretty old machine though. It might just be cheaper to get something newer. A smaller server will blow that one away and consume a lot less power than the 3500.

  • HT1423 I am adding more memory, should I replace the top two slots with the 4g memory modules, then place 2g memory modules on bottom slots. Does it even matter?
