Adding multiple instances of a site column to a content type

I read the posts at the link below (which references the exact same question that I will now ask), but is there any way to include multiple instances of the same site column (SC) to a content type (CT)?  The recommendation in the referenced thread is to create a copy of the SC for each column in the corresponding CT.  However, what I am attempting to do is create a document library, which contains a source document with an associated language, and a target document with an associated language.  Either, I need to create a list with both a source and target document that each store their own language, OR I need to add two columns, source language and target language, that are copies of the language column, OR I need a way to add the two aforementioned columns the way that I SHOULD be able to, which is by adding the language column twice, then changing the name accordingly.  Can anyone suggest the best way for me to do this?  Thanks,
-Jeff

I have the same issue.  I have a list which I need to add two instances of the same site column: Originating Department and Routed Department.  They both need to use the Department site column but I am not allowed to add the site column twice
in the same list.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to programmatically create a site column and a content type

    Hello,
    I'd like to create a site column (let's say a field text) and a content type, only  using c#  -i.e. I don't want to add new item/column and then xml. This code will be added to a FeatureActivated.My code is :
    public override void FeatureActivated(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) {SPWeb rootweb = (SPWeb) properties.Feature.Parent;
    SPFieldText field = new SPFieldText(SPfiledscollection???, "field1");
    if (field != null)
    rootweb.Fields.Add(field)
    rootweb.Update();
    }   SPContentType newContentType = new SPContentType(spcntenttypeId??, SPContentTypeCollection ??, "content1");
       rootweb.ContentTypes.Add(newContentType);
       rootweb.Update();
    Are there any sample codes out there? I've only found samples using xml - which has an irritating "feature"
    Thank you
    Christos

    Nice code and it helped me understand. Some small questions. I'm trying to make all the "data" for a (sub)web site.
    So, I think, my steps are:
    1. create site columns+content type
    2. create  list
    3. create a lookup site column that uses the list on <2>
    4. create content type that uses the site column on <3>
    5. Create the list for the content type on <4>
    My confusion is: should I use one feature for everything? Your code is using scope=site, so i need to "hardcode" the web site's name. I don't mind doing that , I just don't know how to use scopes in features for creating data.
    Thank you

  • How can I update a Site Column with the content of an array with javascript CSOM?

    I'm relative new to Sharepoint 2013, I'm trying to update the content of a Site column with the content of an array, I can retrieve and visualize the content of my site column, the user is able to change and save the necessary part and the changes are

    Let's look at your stylesheet -
    <style type="text/css">
    body {
    background-image: url(assets/images/Business%20Men%20In%20Reception%20Col.2.jpg);
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-color: #003;
    margin-left:auto;
    margin-right:auto;
    position: relative;
    width: 960px;
    It's a good idea not to use spaces or any punctuation in your filenames when working for the web.
    #header {
    margin-left:auto;
    margin-right:auto;
    position: relative;
    width: 960px;
    #heading {
    font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;
    font-size: 36px;
    font-style: italic;
    font-variant: normal;
    margin-left:auto;
    margin-right:auto;
    There's no need to specify the default values (font-variant:normal) or to specify auto margins for any block element without an explicitly defined width. And wouldn't it make more sense to put the font style on the body tag, where it will inherit into the rest of the page than to restate it as you have done in the next rule?
    #bodytext {
    font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;
    font-size: 18px;
    line-height: 25px;
    font-variant: normal;
    width: 300px;
    #container {
    width: 960px;
    position: relative;
    margin-left:auto;
    margin-right:auto;
    .rightimg {
    float: right;
    margin-left: auto;
    padding-right: 40px;
    #heading #navbar ul li {
    padding: 30px;
    </style>
    Margin-left:auto can't work without knowing what the width of the element is....  Keep your CSS lean and targeted - it will help you to debug your layouts.

  • Missing Columns from List Content Type

    Hi,
    I'm having some strange problems with one of my site collections, I have site content types with a few columns in it and I'm using them in 3 different libraries.
    However recently something happened and it seems the list content types in one of the libraries have stopped using some of the columns set out in the site content type (according to library settings). The columns still show as part of the list (and the metadata
    is still in there), when I've tried adding them back to the list content types, I do not see them in the list columns group, only in their original column group. If I try to add them to the list from their original group I get the errors similar to the following:

    I've tried to make changes to the parent site content type, however those changes to not push down to the library in question. The missing columns have varied types (single line of text, lookup, managed metadata and so forth). All of these content types &
    site columns were created through the user interface of SharePoint.
    Can anyone help me with any ideas what has happened and/or how to fix this problem?

    Hi Hans,
    As I understand, you have custom content type in 3 libraries, while the issue occurs to the columns in this content type.
    I wonder if the issue occurs to other two libraries as well?
    From your description, "I've tried to make changes to the parent site content type, however those changes to not push down to the library in question", do you mean that changes in content type are not reflected to the list which is added to this
    content type. If that is the case, I'd suggest you recreate content type.
    If the site content type works well in other two libraries, please create a new library and add this content type. If it works well, then move the list content to this new list.

  • How to delete a custom columns from a content-type in Sharepoint Client object model

    I have a windows interface where I create a content-type and then create a column and adds that column to the content-type.
    //availableCT is my content-type where the column is present.
    //get all available fields within this content-type
    FieldCollection fieldColl = availableCT.Fields;
    clientContext.Load(fieldColl);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    foreach (Field field in fieldColl)
    //columnFromList is the column that is to be deleted
    if (field.InternalName.Equals(columnFromList))
    field.DeleteObject();
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery(); // this throws an exception
    // Additional information: Site columns which are included in content types or on lists cannot be deleted. Please remove all instances of this site column prior to deleting it.

    hi,
    you can use the below code to delete it
    using (ClientContext sourceContext = new ClientContext(cmdSpoSite))
    Web web = sourceContext.Web;
    sourceContext.Load(web);
    sourceContext.Load(web.AvailableContentTypes, type => type.Include(c => c.FieldLinks, c => c.Name));
    sourceContext.ExecuteQuery();
    List<ContentType> ExistingContentType = web.AvailableContentTypes.ToList();
    IEnumerable<ContentType> contentTypesList = ExistingContentType.Where(ct => ct.Name == "<ContentTypeName>");
    ContentType ctype = contentTypesList.ElementAt(0);
    IQueryable<FieldLink> flinks = ctype.FieldLinks.Where(f => f.Name == "<FiledName");
    foreach (FieldLink flink in flinks)
    flink.DeleteObject();
    ctype.Update(true);
    sourceContext.ExecuteQuery();
    The difference being in your code and above code is you are removeing fileds which is eventually is deleting site column but a site column cannot be deleted if is alreday being used. So you need to deled the FieldLink in content type taht way column is removed
    from content type but not from site column.
    Now if you want to delete site column you can use your code to deleted Field.

  • Orphaned column in a content type

    Hi,
    We have MMS and Content Type Hub created.
    Initially we created a column and added it to a couple of content types in the Content Type Hub and published the content types.
    Recently we deleted the column from one particular content type and republished the content type, but still we see the column in the content type in the subscribing site collections New and Old.
    Have manually run the jobs "Content Type Hub" and "Content Type Subscriber"

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that the content type in the subscribing site collections don’t update immediately.
    I recommend that you can try to check and test the things as below:
      1.  Go to “SharePoint 2013 Central Administration”, click on the “Application Management”, click on the “Manage Service Application”, select “Managed Metadata Service Application”, check the Managed metadata service connection properties to make
    sure that the option “Consumes content types from Content Type gallery at <your correct Content Type Hub URL>” and “Push-down Content Type Publishing updates from the Content Type Gallery to sub-sites and lists using the content type” is enabled.
      2.  Go to “Site Settings”, click on the “Site content types”, select the particular content type, click on the “Manage publishing for this content type”, check the “Unpublish” button and click on the “OK” button, then you need to publish it again.
      3.  Go to “Site Settings”, click on the “Content Type Publishing” to check the “Refresh all published content types on next update” and the “the Content Type Publishing error log”.
      4.  Go to “Monitoring” in the “SharePoint 2013 Central Administration”, click on the “Review job definitions”, find the
    “Content Type Hub” and “Content Type Subscriber” timer jobs to run again, and check if the two timer job’s status is succeeded.

  • Workflow Status column for new content type

    Hi,
    Initially I had a document library and several workflows associated with it. After that I created a new content type inheriting Folder content type. My existing workflows could be started and work fine with any item of this new content type except anything
    related to the workflow status column, such as "Automatically update workflow status to the current stage name", or workflow action "Set workflow status". If I use the OOTB Folder content type, everything's fine. But I need custom fields
    for folder as well.
    The workflows can be started then it seems unreasonable that they are not associated with the items of the new content type, considering I set my new content type to be the child of the existing Folder content type. So why any item under this new content
    type does not have the workflow status column? I've tried removing the workflow from the list and publishing back using SPD without success.
    I also notice that when you associate a new content type to a document library/list which has some custom columns, you cannot edit those columns to be used in the new content type. You need to delete those columns and recreate them, then the option "Add
    to all content types" is there. Is this expected design?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    According to your post, an error occurred when you created a custom Edit form for new content type.
    We can do as follows:
    1.Add the MyNameSpace.MyNewEditPage dll file into GAC(C:\Windows\assembly).
    2. Execute the iisreset command.
    We can create a new content type using visual studio 2012/2013.

  • [CSOM] How to use CSOM to add a Enterprise Keywords column to a content type

    Based on information given in following blogs,
    http://sadomovalex.blogspot.com/2011/05/add-enterprise-keywords-field-into.html
    I wrote this code to Add an Enterprise Keywords column to a SharePoint content type. the  code runs fine... but when I go to the content type definition in the UI I don't see any column other than title.
    ContentTypeCreationInformation contentType = new ContentTypeCreationInformation();
    contentType.Name = "MyCT";
    contentType.Group = "MyGroup";
    contentType.ParentContentType = itemCt;
    ct = web.ContentTypes.Add(contentType);
    web.Update();
    c.ExecuteQuery();
    Field f1;
    Field f2;
    FieldCollection collFields = web.Fields;
    var siteColumns = c.LoadQuery(collFields);
    c.ExecuteQuery();
    foreach (var col in siteColumns) {
    if (col != null) {
    if (col.Title.Equals("TaxKeywordTaxHTField")) {
    f1 = col;
    if (col.Title.Equals("Tax Catch All Column")) {
    f2 = col;
    FieldLinkCreationInformation fieldLink = new FieldLinkCreationInformation();
    fieldLink.Field = f1;
    myContentType.FieldLinks.Add(fieldLink);
    f1.Update();
    FieldLinkCreationInformation fieldLink2 = new FieldLinkCreationInformation();
    fieldLink2.Field = f2;
    myContentType.FieldLinks.Add(fieldLink2);
    f2.Update();
    web.Update();
    c.ExecuteQuery();
    But when I go into SharePoint UI and try to see the content of my new content type. it only has a title column. there is no Enterprise Keyword column.
    How can I add a enterprise keyword column?
    val it: unit=()

    Hi,
    For this issue, I'm trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at it.

    filled1._y = 225;
    But I want the user to be able to hit the button again and
    get yet another instance of "filledCircle" on the stage.
    I also want the user to be able to drag these instances
    around...
    Any help would be appreciated...
    Thanks,
    Muhl

    Muhl,

    Sure thing.

    > button...
    >
    > on (release) {
    > attachMovie ("filledCircle", "filled1", 5);
    > filled1._x = 370;
    > filled1._y = 225;
    > }
    Gotcha.
    > But I want the user to be able to hit the button again
    > and get yet another instance of "filledCircle" on the
    > stage.
    You're in luck, because this isn't very hard to do. The main
    thing to
    keep in mind is that each instance must have A) its own
    unique instance name
    and B) its own unique depth. In your example, the instance
    name is filled1
    and the depth is 5. The next clip's instance name should be
    filled2 at a
    depth of 6. Then filled3, depth 7, and so on. You can use a
    single
    variable to handle the incrementation.
    // code in a frame
    var counter:Number = 1;
    // code on your button
    on (release) {
    attachMovie ("filledCircle", "filled" + counter, counter +
    4);
    With me so far? The variable counter contains the numeric
    value 1. The
    second parameter of attachMovie() is provided with a
    concatenation of
    "filled" + 1, which makes "filled1". The third parameter is
    provided with
    the sum of counter plus 4, which makes 5. Obviously, we need
    a bit more.
    The button must, in addition, increment the value of counter.
    The ++
    operator handles this perfectly.
    on (release) {
    attachMovie ("filledCircle", "filled" + counter, counter +
    4);
    counter++;
    Now, it seems you also want to position the attached movie
    clip to (370,
    225). Are they call supposed to go to the same place? If so,
    you may use a
    second variable to hold a reference to the newly attached
    clip. Look up
    MovieClip.attachMovie(), and you'll see that the method
    returns the exact
    reference you need.
    // code in a frame
    var counter:Number = 1;
    var mc:MovieClip;
    // code on your button
    on (release) {
    mc = attachMovie ("filledCircle", "filled" + counter,
    counter + 4);
    counter++;
    mc._x = 370;
    mc._y = 225;
    Make sense?
    > I also want the user to be able to drag these instances
    > around...
    Then you need to handle a few events. You're dealing with
    movie clips
    here, so your best bet is to study up on the MovieClip class,
    which defines
    all movie clips. (Note, also, that the TextField class
    defines all input
    and dynamic text fields; the Sound class defines all sounds,
    etc. This is a
    very handy arrangement of the ActionScript 2.0 Language
    Reference.)
    // code in a frame
    var counter:Number = 1;
    var mc:MovieClip;
    // code on your button
    on (release) {
    mc = attachMovie ("filledCircle", "filled" + counter,
    counter + 4);
    counter++;
    mc._x = 370;
    mc._y = 225;
    mc.onPress = function() {
    this.startDrag();
    mc.onRelease = function() {
    this.stopDrag();
    Easy as that. You're simply assigning a function literal to
    the event
    of each new MovieClip instance as you create it. Take a look
    and you'll see
    each of these class members available to you -- that is, to
    all movie clips.
    MovieClip.onPress, MovieClip.startDrag(), MovieClip._x, etc.
    Wherever it shows the term MovieClip in the Language
    Reference, just
    replace that with the instance name of your clip -- or a
    reference to that
    clip (which even includes the global "this" property).

  • Managed metadata columns in document information panel with multiple content types

    Hi everyone,
    The problem I have is that for custom content types not all managed metadata columns are displayed in Document Information Panel (DIP) for the document in the Office client application.
    However, everything works fine with 1 specific content type. Even though the others using exactly the same site columns. The content types are deployed using visual studio to the content type hub, and after this the content types are correctly published to
    the site collections, there are no publish issues here.
    When I create a document based on the second content type in the same library, all fields are showed in the document information panel, except the managed metadata columns.
    Detailed explanation:
    Library: procedures
    Content types:
    - simple procedure (with 4 managed metadata fields and some other text fields)
    - procedure with approval (with the same 4 managed metadata fields and some other text fields)
    Scenario 1: I add the 'simple procedure' content type to the procedures library as only content type. Everything works fine, and all fields show correctly in the document information panel in Word.
    Scenario 2: I add the 'procedure with approval' content type to the procedures library as only content type. Everything works fine, and all fields show correctly in the document information panel in Word.
    Scenario 3: I add the 'simple procedure' and 'procedure with approval' content types to the document library procedures (added simple procedure first). When I create a new document based on the 'simple procedure'
    content type, everything works fine and he shows all metadata fields. When I add a new document based on the 'procedure with approval' content type, the document information panel shows correctly, except all managed metadata fields. These are not visible at
    all. Though they worked perfectly in scenario 1 and 2.
    Is this a known issue or is there a workaround for this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards, Davy

    Yes!
    This problem is solved right now.
    My issue was that I'm using custom content types deployed by Visual Studio in the content type hub. To create a managed metadata site column in visual studio, you need to have first of all your managed metadata field, but also a hidden field accompagnied
    to make the actual mapping like the example below:
    <Field ID="{B654D984-187A-471B-8738-F08F3356CFDA}"
    Type="TaxonomyFieldType"
    DisplayName="Countries"
    ShowField="Term1033"
    EnforceUniqueValues="FALSE"
    Group="Demo"
    StaticName="Countries"
    Name="Countries">
    <Customization>
    <ArrayOfProperty>
    <Property>
    <Name>TextField</Name>;
    <Value xmlns:q6="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" p4:type="q6:string" xmlns:p4="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">{67308AC2-9556-456B-BF9E-43E8F23EBEE6}</Value>
    </Property>
    </ArrayOfProperty>
    </Customization>
    </Field>
    <Field Type="Note"
    DisplayName="Countries_0"
    StaticName="CountriesTaxHTField0"
    Name="CountriesTaxHTField0"
    ID="{67308AC2-9556-456B-BF9E-43E8F23EBEE6}"
    ShowInViewForms="FALSE"
    Required="FALSE"
    Hidden="TRUE"
    CanToggleHidden="TRUE"
    Group="Demo"
    RowOrdinal="0"
    />
    </Elements>
    VERY important here is that when you create your content type using visual studio, you not only have to add the managed metadata site column in your xml (which let the content type work already perfectly) but also add the hidden field to your content type
    xml !! This way, SharePoint knows that when you have multiple content types with the same site columns in the same library, the second content type also need to get the hidden field from this site columns like in the example below!
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <Elements xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">
    <!-- Parent ContentType: Document (0x0101) -->;
    <ContentType ID="0x010100571ebc0f478a49d5a775039347ee1535"
    Name="Document Location"
    Group="Demo"
    Description="A content type containing Managed Metadata Column."
    Inherits="TRUE"
    Version="0">
    <FieldRefs>
    <FieldRef ID="{B654D984-187A-471B-8738-F08F3356CFDA}" Name="Countries"/>
    <FieldRef ID="{67308AC2-9556-456B-BF9E-43E8F23EBEE6}" Name="CountriesTaxHTField0"/>
    <FieldRef ID="{f3b0adf9-c1a2-4b02-920d-943fba4b3611}" Name="TaxCatchAll"/>
    <FieldRef ID="{8f6b6dd8-9357-4019-8172-966fcd502ed2}" Name="TaxCatchAllLabel"/>
    </FieldRefs>
    </ContentType>
    </Elements>
    I'm very happy I found this solution, because in the whole project i'm implementing, this was used a lot!
    Special thanks to the blog of @cann0nf0dder (http://cann0nf0dder.wordpress.com/2013/04/01/creating-a-site-column-with-managed-metadata) which let me think about this!

  • SharePoint 2013 Custom Content Type with Site Column custom validations

    Hello,
    Can somebody please suggest me how I can create custom content type with site columns with custom validation to site columns programmatically?
    Thanks,
    Praveen Kumar Padmakaran

    Hi,
    From your description, my understanding is that you want to create content type with site column with validation.
    You could create a site column, and add some validation to the site column. After you could create a custom content type, please add the site column with validation to the content type. Please refer
    to this code below:
    static void Main(string[] args)
    // replace your url
    using (SPSite site = new SPSite("http://sp/sites/sp2013"))
    using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb())
    //define the type of the field
    SPFieldType type = SPFieldType.Number;
    // create a site column
    SPField field = CreateSiteColumn(web, "newTest", type, "");
    // add custom formula for the field
    SPFieldNumber fieldNumber = web.Fields.GetField("newTest") as SPFieldNumber;
    fieldNumber.ValidationFormula = "=[newTest]>5";
    fieldNumber.ValidationMessage = ">5";
    fieldNumber.Update();
    SPContentTypeId parentItemCTypeId = web.ContentTypes[0].Id;
    // create custom content type
    SPContentType contentType = CreateSiteContentType(web, "newContent", parentItemCTypeId, "Custom Content Types");
    // add the site column to the content type
    AddFieldToContentType(web, contentType, field);
    // add fiedl to contenttype
    public static void AddFieldToContentType(SPWeb web, SPContentType contentType, SPField field)
    if (contentType == null) return;
    if (contentType.Fields.ContainsField(field.Title)) return;
    SPFieldLink fieldLink = new SPFieldLink(field);
    contentType.FieldLinks.Add(fieldLink);
    contentType.Update();
    // create a custom content type
    public static SPContentType CreateSiteContentType(SPWeb web, string contentTypeName,SPContentTypeId parentItemCTypeId, string group)
    if (web.AvailableContentTypes[contentTypeName] == null)
    SPContentType itemCType = web.AvailableContentTypes[parentItemCTypeId];
    SPContentType contentType =
    new SPContentType(itemCType, web.ContentTypes, contentTypeName) { Group = @group };
    web.ContentTypes.Add(contentType);
    contentType.Update();
    return contentType;
    return web.ContentTypes[contentTypeName];
    // create a site column
    public static SPField CreateSiteColumn(SPWeb web, string displayName,SPFieldType fieldType, string groupDescriptor)
    if (!web.Fields.ContainsField(displayName))
    string fieldName = web.Fields.Add(displayName, fieldType, false);
    SPField field = web.Fields.GetFieldByInternalName(fieldName);
    field.Group = groupDescriptor;
    field.Update();
    return field;
    return web.Fields[displayName];

  • Error while adding content type fields in the EditForm.aspx for an customlist item.

    This is office 365. I have content type which is attached to custom list.
    Added new site column "CustomerAction" which was added to Content type, now when I added this field in the EDITForm.aspx using the SharePoint designer, this form is called when the custom list item is being edited.
    But when I added this extra field to EDITFORM.aspx it is giving error,. the standard correlationid error.
    Can anyone suggest, what could be problem !
    Thanks
    Labhesh
    Labhesh Shrimali

    Hi Labhesh,
    When we add the site column to the content type, there is an option to update the all
    content types which inheriting from this type.
    If we set this to Yes, then the site column will be added to the list where the content type or its child content type has been used and this column will be added to the EDITFORM.aspx too.
    So we don’t need to re-add this site column to EDITFORM.aspx.

  • How to add core column "Modified" to a content type

    I don't know if this is the correct category to put the question in but if not you're free to move it...
    I'm creating a page layout in SharePoint 2013 using SharePoint Designer and the Design Manager, and so far everything seems to be working. But I would like to add the "Modified" site column to my page layout but it is not available in Design Manager
    as a snippet, likely because the column is not added to the content type. I thought I would be able to simply add the site column in my content type definition as a reference like this:
    <FieldRef ID="{28cf69c5-fa48-462a-b5cd-27b6f9d2bd5f}" Name="Modified" />
    This has worked for all the custom site columns I have added to the content type but for some reason the "Modified" site column is not added to the content type. Does anyone know why this may be the case? Do I need to add other attributes in the
    field reference?

    I don't know what has changed since last time I tried it but if I insert this snippet it works as expected:
    <div data-name="Page Field: Modified">
    <!--CS: Start Page Field: Modified Snippet-->

  • Add Already Existing Taxonomy Column to Content Type using visual Studio

    Hi
    I need to add existing Taxonomy Site Column to my Content type, which will be used in  my SharePoint list Everywhere I have seen it is talking about how to create managed metadata column and then add it to your site content type.My column is already
