Adding music from external HDD to Ipod without copying to Mac

Hi,
I'm using a friend's Mac while mine is in service. I'd like to add new songs to my ipod from my external hdd, without adding the songs to his itunes, or at least in a way that I can restore his system to its original state afterwards. Any ideas if that can be done and how?
Cheers,
nico

Are you sure it works? Sound like you are just adding the files to the iPod in hard drive mode, but they won't appear in the iPod "music player" area and be playable on your iPod.

I want 2 put music from cds on another ipod without the songs being in my library. Sorry it cut me off on the title. I want to import songs to put on my brother's ipod, but when I try to delete the song from my library it deletes it from his too. Help?

If you want to delete content from your computer but keep it on the iPod (so that is not deleted next time you connect it to iTunes), you need to set that iPod to manage the iPod content manually.

I have a similar problem.  I recieved an IPAD for my birthday, and my daughter updated my itunes library so i can use it with the ipad...and somehow all my songs (unpurchased from itunes, and downloaded  from a large collection of CDs) ...and play lists were deleted.   I still have them on my old ipod, and wonder how to get them back onto my computer so I can redistribute some of them to the ipad.  I must be getting too old for this tech stuff, it gets less user friendly every year.

  • ITunes adding music from external drive to multiple users

    Here's what I have:
My iMac currently has 3 different user accounts on it. My iTunes library is currently stored on my external HD and its location is set to route to the external drive on both accounts. I currently have both boxes checked to Keep files organized in the iTunes folder (which is on my external HD).
Issue: iTunes does not automatically update the library information from the external drive to the actual iTunes player/list. So, for instance, if I currently added a song to my library via cd on User A's account, it will automatically save to the external drive...but when i log into User B, it will not show the new song in that iTunes player/list. Instead I have to go find the file on the external drive and drag it into the iTunes.
Basically, how can I make it so that any time new music is added to the external hard drive, iTunes will automatically add it into the player w/o me having to manually move it over?

iTunes has no "folder watch" feature, so what you're experiencing is normal and cannot be solved without third-party software. Hazel is a third-party utility that claims to be able to watch a folder and automatically add an added track to iTunes. I haven't tried it, but you might want to take a look. Otherwise, you have to add the tracks manually.

  • Help me get my iTunes music from external HD to iPod??

New iPod is plugged into Mac. Set to automatically update. What steps do I take now to get music from my External HD onto the iPod?? Thanks.

The music has to be in iTunes first.
Go ahead and eject the iPod from iTunes...
    How to Eject the iPod
Now, go to file-->add folder to library. Find the folder on the external HD that has all the music on it. Add that to the library. Then go back and sync the iPod. Note that iTunes will look for the songs from the ext. HD, and if it is not connected, the songs will not work in iTunes.

  • Transfering music from new iMac to iPod without losing songs on ipod

    Hello,
I've just finised uploading all my CD's onto my new iMac. I now wish to download the contents of the iMac's iTunes library onto my iPod (click wheel but not video) without losing the songs that are already on the iPod. The iPod was originally synced to a Windows PC which was used to download it's existing library. There are a number of songs on my iPod that are not in my new iMac's iTunes library & also a large number of songs that are already on the iPod.
Basically, I want to know how I can download all songs from my iMac's library that are not already on the iPod without losing the songs I have on the iPod that are not in the iMac's iTunes library (Ihope that makes sence).
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Hi Dave!
    Yes, you can do this.
First off, do this to prevent iTunes from automatically syncing your iPod:
    1 - Open iTunes.
2 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
3 - Basically as soon as your iPod begins to display "Do Not Disconnect", begin to press and hold the Option and Command keys on your keyboard together simultaneously.
4 - Continue to hold these keys for about 20 seconds, throughout the time when your iPod is showing up in the Source List in iTunes.
After you've done this, click on your iPod's name in the Source List (the Source List is the left panel area of iTunes), and under the "Summary" tab, tick the "Manually manage" option for your iPod. Also, go to the “Music” tab, and ensure that the “Sync” option isn’t selected.
Click the “Apply” button in the bottom-right corner to save your changes.
Manually managing the songs on your iPod will allow you to preserve the current content that you have on your iPod, and transfer new content from your iTunes library to your iPod.
When you are connecting your iPod to a computer that is different than what it is normally synced to, you will get a message that says something like: "The contents of the iPod "your iPod's name" is synced to another iTunes library. What would you like to do?"
You will be given a couple of options, and make sure to click on "Cancel", and NOT "Erase and Sync" (or else the current contents of your iPod will be erased, and the iPod will be synced with your iTunes library).
So, after you've saved your iPod's songs from being automatically synced off of it, you can transfer your iPod's music to your compter if you wish.
You can install a third-party program onto your computer that can do this copying.
    Try using Senuti.

  • Transfering Music From a 1st Generation iPod to a New iPod

I just purchased a new iPod and I have a first generation iPod. Is there a way I can transfer the music from my first generation iPod without having to copy every CD onto the new one? Thanks.

The iPod isn't designed for device to device copy but you can transfer the songs on the old iPod back to iTunes and update your new one from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only

    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • I have added music from my CD library to iTunes but now my iPod will not sync.  Message says not enough free space.  How can I sync only a portion of my library to my 8Gb Nano?

I have added music from my CD library to iTunes on my PC.  I now have too many songs in my iTunes and I have insufficient space in my 8 Gb Nano.  I am unable to sync my iPod now.  How can I get my iPod to sync?  I only want a portion of my songs on the Nano.

    Hi wisemra,
First, make sure your iTunes does not attempt to sync automatically. Open iTunes, and select Preferences under the iTunes menu item:
Then, once you have hooked up your device and selected it, you should see the device Profile pages to the right. Select the Music tab:
Once you get to the Music detail screen, you will see the option to "Sync Music". You can then select "Sync Entire Music Library" or you can select "Sync Selected Playlists, Artists, Albums, Genres". Click on the second one. Then, below, you can select which of your music from the library you want on your device:
Your will show a list of your music. Mine doesn't because I sync with an iTunes library on different computer, but once you have selected the options I have shown you, you will see the music listed. Just pick what you want on your device and then click "Sync" at the bottom.
    Cheers,

  • Can I transfer my music from a Windows formatted iPod to my new MacBook Pro?

I just ordered a 15 inch 2.3 ghz MacBook Pro and I can't wait to get it. The only thing I am wondering is if I will have any trouble transferring all of my music from my Windows formatted iPod (8gb 3rd generation iPod Nano) to the new MacBook Pro. Should I be able to follow all the steps in this article without any problems?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ryan

In the iPod's user manual should be instructions on how to put the iPod into disk mode so that it will appear as an external hard drive. You can then copy your music to the Mac.

It depends on who owns the phones.  If you are just upgrading from one iPhone to another, you can use iTunes.
