Adding music loses previous data

A couple of months ago I added some Cds form our collection to my itunes library. During the process itunes locked up and when I restarted part of my library was gone, most of the artists A- C. I have been trying to get them back, but no luck. Was adding some new cds I bought yesterday, and during the process all music that had been in the collection before the previous issue just disapeared. I tried opening an earlier version of the libraty and all the songs disapeared off of that also. What is going on, it is about 1500 songs.

Anybody?????

You can't reformat it and not wipe everything on it.
Have you tried a different USB port?
Only other option, back it up on a different computer.

    Yes, you will.
Restoring is an "all or nothing" proposition.  When you restore, everything will appear as it did back then.

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Being made to lose unlimited data, even though I am paying full price???

I've been around and have been following the discussions/policies about those of us who have unlimited data and how we will lose unlimited data if we purchase a new device taking advantage of the discount pricing. I also know the workarounds of how to keep unlimited data but what I don't understand is this....
I have 3 smartphones, all have unlimited data. 1 of the 3 phones is eligible for an upgrade, 2 of them are not.
While signed into my account, I select the phone that is eligible for an upgrade and go into the ordering system. I select the new phone I want to buy and I have the option before adding the new phone to my cart to either: pay full price, or pay the discounted price. I chose the full price option (and this is the one-time full price, not the monthly payment plan option just to be clear) and then add the new phone to my cart. That's when I get a pop-up window that says my unlimited data plan is no longer available and that I would have to chose a new (capped) data plan. Without making any new choice in this pop-up window, I close the window.  I then click through the various pages of the ordering system getting up to the point of reviewing my cart. And at the review cart/review order page, I also see that the system automatically removed my unlimited data plan and slapped on a 2gb individual (not family share) data plan.
So it would clearly seem that if an upgrade is available on a phone and even choosing to pay full price, and purposefully avoiding taking advantage of the upgrade price, the ordering system is all too eager to take that unlimited data plan away EVEN IF you chose the full price option, despite VZW's repeated statements that if you elect to pay the one-time full price you can keep your unlimited data plan. I tried seeking a clarification of this issue with an online chat representative through the chat button in the ordering process and the only solution from the chat rep was to just order the new phone and pay the full price on one of the 2 phones not currently eligible for an upgrade.
So what's your response to this VZW? I would appreciate a policy statement to these issues and this situation.

So I went back into the ordering system today and did the EXACT same steps I did previously by making sure I selected the one-time pay-in-full price, adding the new phone to my cart and walking the ordering system all the way up to the cart and guess what....oh low and behold.....now after posting this message, I am not getting the system prompt I was getting previously about not being able to keep my unlimited data plan (even though I was very precise in confirming my first attempt was at the one-time pay-in-full price the first time which prompted my first post).
So I guess it was just cleaner and less publicly humiliating for VZW to quietly fix their ordering system then it was to acknowledge their ordering system was forcing customers off unlimited data even when the customer was trying to pay full price in one payment for a new phone despite the Company's very public and very on the record statements that customers choosing to pay the one-time pay-in-full price would be able to keep their unlimited plan.

  • HT203793 Playlists freezing when adding music to them now, how to unfreeze?

Playlists freezing when adding music to them now, how to unfreeze? I'm not using Match.

Try closing the Music app completely and then reset your iPad.  You will not lose any data.
In order to close the Muisc app, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Race conditions - can you actually lose the data in memory?

I've seen posts where a race condition can actually destroy the contents of a global memory. I understand about not getting the right information if your read just beats your write, but can it actually lose the data altogether? This would mean you have to semaphore every time you write to a global if you have something polling on it to guarantee the data doesn't get lost. I've never seen this in any example programs - its hard to believe!

I think the idea is merely that when you write to a global (or any)
variable the previous contents are overwritten. If you intended to read the
global before the write but the write ends up happening first then you lose.

  • How do I delete duplicate songs in my iTunes? I have hundreds and I don't want to delete them one by one. They were all added on the same date, so sorting by the date won't help.

How do I delete duplicate songs in my iTunes? I have hundreds and I don't want to delete them one by one. They were all added on the same date, so sorting by the date won't help.

Hi, if this is in regards to your library simply open up itunes and do the following steps:
    Click File
    Scroll down to "show duplicates"
A list will then appear of your duplicate song titles.
Be sure to CAREFULLY review each song to make sure it is a duplicate ( as I have some music that is the same song but live, acoustic etc...)
Proceed to manually delete each song from the list and leave alone any song that you wish to keep.
    Best of luck,
    Cait

  • I have an Iphone 4 which I just updated with the latest software, which put in it in Recovery Mode. It has the picture of the plug with Itunes, I downloaded it now its saying its in Recovery Mode, how do I save all of my previous data without Restoring?

I have an IPhone 4 which I just updated with the latest software, which put in it in Recovery Mode. It has the picture of the plug with ITunes, I downloaded it now its saying its in Recovery Mode, how do I save all of my previous data without Restoring?
I updated the phone before backing it up on iTunes, now the update wanted me to connect the phone with iTunes and it says the phones in recovery mode and it must be restored before its used with iTunes. I go to click restore and it says it will reset it to factory default and I'll lose all my current data. I have all my sons pictures and videos along with this notes. I can't lose all of this data! Please help!

You have to restore the iPod, no ifs, ands, or buts...
After iOS is installed you will be asked if you what to set it up as a new iPod or if you want to restore from a backup.
If you have a good backup you can restore that and you're good to go.
If you don't have a good backup, then you end up with a "clean" iPod....

  • IPod Touch has been synced with another Library- can't lose any data!!

Okay so I have my iTunes Media Folder on an external drive to save some space on my Hard drive. This just works fine, but yesterday I accidentally messed up my Media folder. Luckily, I got all my music, videos, apps etc back in original form, however when I wanted to sync my iPod Touch with My iTunes, I got a message saying that my iPod touch could only be used with one library and that I'd have to erase it! I have LOTS of app data and saved games (over 300 apps)... so is there any way I can make it sync without erasing? Help is appreciated!

Apps are not an issue since you can always redownload them for no additional cost if you are signed into the same iTunes account that purchased them originally. You can also transfer iTunes purchases to the computer. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 (redownload)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 (transfer)
It appears that iTunes now sees the fixed media library as new library. Is the computer authorized for the iTunes account on the iPod (Go to the Store tab in iTunes). On your computer if you go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices do you see a backup for your iPod? With you iPod connected to your computer if you right click on on your iPod under devices do you have an option to backup your iPod.
If you can backup your iPod and transfer purchases then you can restore the iPod using the backup and then sync. If You can't backup but have the backup already then you may be able to restore from backup. If you can't make a backup and one does not exist I know of no way not to lose yur data saved in your app.

  • Added music track to video..entire screen is green and I cannot delete music track

I added music track to video, inadvertently dropped outside of clip now entire area outside of track is green and I can't remove or delete music.

i literally deleted the entire "Purchases" folder and restarted the phone. it recreated the folder (except without all our problem files) as soon as it powered back on.
no idea what downloads refers to - i tried this process with that folder and it didn't change anything or solve the prob.
as for the syncing of the playlist - i still don't think that would solve it. it seems like there is a discrepancy being created whenever a song is downloaded from the store, period. and as for deleting the stream files - no. I switched over to manual manage, deleted the files manually, but they simply recreated themselves as soon as i did another sync.
It was indeed the purchases folder that needed reconciling.
as a fun side note - i used phoneview to make a PDF of all my 60,000 texts from the previous 3 years, and then deleted them from my phone - saving myself like 10 gigs
realizing now this could all seem like i'm some rep for the phoneview app. i swear i'm not hahahaha

  • Installing iOS 5 erases all previous data

Installation of iOS 5 erased all previous data on my iPad. Help! Prior to iCloud being in the picture, where were all my photos and documents backed up?
I am attempting to locate the files which vanished upon updating to iOS 5 - hundreds of pdf files, thousands of uploaded photos, screen shots, saved photos from web, ALL GONE. So were all my acquired apps, although those have been replaced - now I can begin or attempt to reconstitute the complex folder structure (notes, notes 2, notes 3, etc.) which grew over the last few iOS iterations, from too many apps stuffed into folders with strict limitations on contents. Tedious, but possible. Re all the photos, I'm still looking for clues: Is solid state storage similar to that on disk drives – does deleted information still reside on the drive, just not on the index?
Also, post updating, I am continually being prompted to authorize my computer, even though it is, and my Apple ID is intermittently rejected as if invalid, this is causing syncing challenges.
    Thanks.
Weary of chasing side effects of upgrading operating systems.

Same for me, when install was finished all was gone, but strange enough the disk space bar was indicating 14Go other and that was exactly my content "in app" without apps, photos, video and music. So this data was not accessible due to missing apps and all my photo/video/music was gone.
I had exactly the same issue last upgrade, and last time I decided to resync my media content and started to add apps one by one again, and by magic almost all the apps managed to find back their data in the 14Go "other" that was still in the IPad. But I had to redo a lot of work like Icon position, some settings, and some apps didn't restore well. Took me a very long time and effort to get back to a nominal situation.
So this time I deciced instead to click "Restore" before doing any sync and used the backup that was generated automaticly just before the upgrade to 5.0 (so still with version 4 of ths IOS)
The process started, the Ipad rebooted and firmware was then loaded again (still 5.0) and the 14Go data from the backup was reloaded also, and this time after this quite long step, itunes started to restore apps, music, photos and videos one by one ... was quite a very long process but at the end all was perfect, storage was back to 40 Go including my 14Go data and all photos, videos and apps, with all setting perfectly restored.
    Hope this help,
    Patrick
