Adding music to iTunes. HELP!

Okay i go to use my remote app on my ipod touch and nothing will play so i look at my itunes library and there is a exclamation mark on all my songs and says it cant locate them but when i click to manually locate them it brings up a blank folder. So i deleted them and tried to do that restore itunes step but all that did is delete all my songs. But i still ahve all my songs on my ipod. Is there a way to add all my songs from my ipod to my library.

The exclamation means that the songs iTunes is referring to has been moved or deleted. Do you by any chance keep your songs on an external harddisk?
There is no official/legal way to transfer songs from your iPod back to your com (a pain I know). But if you really have no other choice then try googling for ways to transfer music from iPod back to com.

  • Re-adding music to iTunes yields surprisingly frustrating results

    Hi
I recently bought an iPod touch, and subsequently downloaded iTunes 7.7 for Windows Vista. Upon plugging my new iPod in, a good chunk of my album art collection was erased mysteriously. I tried to see if re-adding the files would work, so I removed an artist from my library. Upon my attempt to re-add the music to my library, I found that, in fact, I couldn't. How grand. I've re-installed iTunes, yet still "add folder", "add file", and the classic drag-and-drop all do nothing. Any suggestions? I find it maddeningly ironic that I bought an iPod to enjoy all my music, yet iTunes seemingly refuses to let me.

Try working through the steps on this page to rule out permissions issues with your Music folder and the folders contained within the Music folder. Your first post's signature indicates you are running Vista, so the instructions are specific to Vista. If you're running XP, let me know.

  • Since the update, i cant put my music on itunes, help pls

    (Windows 7 to itunes)
Hi, someone can help me ? i cant 'slide' my music in itunes, but before the update it was ok. Dont understand...

I have the same problem. The majority of the music on my hard drive goes into my library fine, but there are a few files that are legit .mp3s that won't. I try to drag, I try to add the file directly in the menu and it doesn't show up in iTunes. I tried to make a copy of the file and rename it - nothing. It is not set up as a read only file.
I am running Windows XP (for now until I can afford that Powerbook ;)). iTunes is version 6.0.1.3.
I even try to play the file in iTunes directly from my hard drive and it won't play. It will play in Winamp though. It is very odd and slowly driving me insane!

  • HT1473 Adding music into iTunes on PC, looking for folder option?

I'm trying to add music into itunes on my PC and it's not giving me the "add FOLDER to library" option (only FILE option).  Why not?  How can I ge this option?  I need to put my music I've saved from my last computer into itunes on my new computer and there's WAY too much to have to do it per file.
My last computer was a Mac and just as I was getting used to how iTunes (and everything else works) on it the computer quit working so I'm back to a PC and need to relearn this again...
    Thank you for your help!

This problem had me stumped for over a week. I think I found a solution to it but before I give it I'd like to mention one thing. The mp4 container and specifically the H264 format are monsters. Any number of encoding flags/methods could be responsible for this behavior... trust me I know I've spent a lot of time messing with the dam things. So if this doesn't work for you it should at least form a basis for a solution that is to say apply this and then start fooling with other things.
What I found was some encoders like ffmpeg put something called MOOV atoms at the end of the mp4 file. ITunes must read these before it can play the file. Not really a problem for disk based files that can skip to the end of the file, but for streaming over a network it's a no go. So google a program called MP4Box download it and run the following command:
    MP4Box -isma VIDEO.mp4
Hope this works for you all!

  • Adding music to iTunes from a different user account on the same computer

I have recently begun using a PowerMacG5 at my college and I imported some music, all from CDs into iTunes under my user account. Then I discovered that this Mac already had music in a different location under a different user account. How do I merge these two libraries together so that both have the same music, same library? Or is that impossible?

  • Unable to edit music on iTunes, help please.

I am having problems editing tracks. I use either iTunes, or Tag & Rename to edit tracks. I had no problems at all in XP doing this. but, I have moved to Vista and now the track if I try and edit it, it's "greyed" out. I cannot edit it with eithger program.
I moved my old iTunes onto my External HD and moved the HD to my laptop.  I then copied the iTunes folder over to Music on the laptop, and it found the HD no problem, copied over playlists, and counts. It syncs without a problem and continues the counts.

It is a bit of a downgrade not being able to edit music details on the phone, but the only solution I've found is to make sure it's right before I drag and drop it onto the phone, then the issue becomes somewhat irrellivant ?

  • Adding music to itunes?

I currently have vista and I have been a long time itunes user always adding songs to my library by simply dragging them from a folder into my library. Recently I was sent files from home into a folder and when I try to add them into my library the status bar says it is processing but the songs are never actually added to my library. How can i fix this problem?

One more thought on this. When you say "I was sent files from home into a folder" is it possible that what you received was a zipped (compressed) folder? If so, it will look like you can douopen it and see the song file icons, but they are not usable until you do an "unzip" or "uncompress" or "extract all files," depending on your computer. Does this help?

  • Unable to put ipod music onto itunes help

    hi
i lost all my computers memory along with iTunes. ive still got my music on my iPod but cannot transfer to iTunes plz help as i don't want to lose my music
thanks for your help any welcome

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you only want to copy your purchases to the computer that can be done using iTunes, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Adding music to iTunes library - changes to files

When I import music files into iTunes (always with the "Add Folder to Library" command), I've noticed some strange things. First, iTunes makes changes to the file by embedding the album cover. I don't really mind this, although I'd like to have the option to turn it off. Can I?
Also, I've noticed that the artist name as displayed in iTunes is different than the file name or the id3 tag. For example, if the tag says "Beatles", iTunes will display it as "The Beatles." Where is iTunes getting this different information, and is there a way to turn this alleged "feature" off?
    Thanks.

You're right - I determined that the art is there before I add it to iTunes.
The naming issue is strange. I tag all of my mp3's with a program called "Tag & Rename" (a very good program). If an artist name has a preceding "the", I always strip it out. When I add it to iTunes, it displays the name with the "the" put back in. However, the id3 tag has not been altered! If I "Get Info" in iTunes, it shows the "the" - but this is not the tag info embedded in the file (which does not have the "the"). I can get rid of the "the" within iTunes in the "Get Info" box, but again, it doesn't look like this is altering the tag info.
Other messages here seemed to indicate that when you edit the "Get Info" box, that this is altering the file's id3 tag, but it doesn't appear to be the case. Does anyone have any more insight into this?

I upgraded from 7.01 to 7.02 today, and half way through the installation got an error message "the folder path 'ipod 7.01' contains an invalid character".
    strange.
perhaps let's first try running through the troubleshooting advice from this document:
Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime software in Windows
... but if no joy with any of that, let's try getting an itunes 7 installer log to the Apple engineers for a look.
    1. Open a command prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
    2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
    3. Type in a space, then the following line:
    /l*v C:\log.txt
    4. Hit return.
    5. The installer will create a log file:
    C:\log.txt
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing
