Adding my desktop to my wireless internet?

Hello,
I want to make a desktop wireless what all will i need to do that? I know i need a wireless adapter. But anything else i need to do or install?
Thanks!

As long as you have a wireless router, you should be fine just installing a wireless adapter. Just make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the adapter.

  • Restrict wireless internet access on certain periods of time

    Hello,
We need help on setting up a network with some restrictions for the attached clients.
We're quite new at setting up a network at this size.
    Used devices:
    1x SRP 540 router
    1x SG 300-10P managed switch
    4x AP 541N accesspoint
    What we want to do:
    1. Around 100 laptops and desktop computers need wireless internet access, but some of them on limited times during the day.
    2. Not all wireless devices are allowed on using the wireless network.
    3. There are also wired desktops that don't need restrictions.
    4. We need the possibility to restrict most of the wireless devices to access certain websites or use certain applications on those computers to use internet access during the times that the computers are allowed to access the internet.
    5. We want to restrict the clients for using torrents or other possibilities of downloading illegal content.
What we were able to do:
    1. The accesspoints (AP 541N) are clustered to achieve 1 large wireless network.
    2. Only mac-adresses that are listed in the accesspoints are capable of using the wireless network. Other mac-adresses are not allowed to use the accesspoints.
    What we tried already:
    1. adding the mac-adresses for the accesspoints to the list of "internet access policy" in the router. Internet access seemed still possible during periods the access wasn't supposed to be possible.
    2. adding the mac-adresses from all clients in this internet access policy seemed useless. Only 10 Internet Access Policies seem to be possible to program. 8 mac-adresses per policy. Knowing there are (at least) two policies needed to restrict a group of 8 macs to access the internet in 24 hours (because blocking the internet from f.e. 22u in the evening to 6 in the morning is not possible because 6 is smaller than 22 - or 10PM).
Besides, after blocking internet access, we need also to write policies in blocking some websites or keywords.
    Thanks already for your guidelines.
    Wim

what about the thoughts of radius for authentication which is connected to active directory for your wireless users. Then have those people you must limit access too during the day in their own security group that's only allowed to login to the domain during certain times of the day.
To limit sites or what they can do on the Internet will require a separate solution for content/URL filtering. Then you can make policies and apply to your security groups in active directory block by category, keyword, and so on.
This is all great assuming you can get these clients into AD.
Just a quick thought, hope it helps.

  • Wireless Internet Access (Cisco IP NGN or Cisco Wireless Mesh Networkin)??

    Dear Cisco Wireless Team
Please educate us on where to start, or the CISCO product we might need to purchase
We are trying to branch out a new Internet wireless access and wireless phone service business in our company, and presently looking for the right Cisco product solution to purchase to enable us offer this service in LAGOS, NIGERIA.
The service will be rendered in Africa, the country NIGERIA, and the city LAGOS.
We would like to mount or install the product in Lagos, Nigeria.
As we are new to this kind of service. We would appreciate if the Cisco wireless team can work with us in pointing or directing on the right product to purchase and what are required. We understand the Cisco Wireless Mesh Networking Solution, Cisco IP Generation Network, Cisco 12416 or 7600 Series Router might be the right products to purchase, but we are not sure on what needed or what are required to meet our service need.
Possibly we would like to offer Wireless Internet Access to unlimited subscribers, and also Wireless or Mobile Phone service to unlimited subscribers in Nigeria.
    Anticipating your reply

I suppose Cisco Wireless Mesh Networking would be a good choice. The Cisco mesh architecture makes it easy to scale coverage as capacity needs dictate, including increasing access point density; adding wired connections, controllers, and radios; and using dual high-powered, high-sensitive radios and a selection of high-gain antennas.Refer the document for IP NGN in the following URL http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns537/networking_solutions_solution_category.html

  • HS-1200 breaks Wireless Internet access

FYI, I just installed and started using the HS-1200 yesterday and they are awesome. An unfortunate side effect is that it breaks the wireless internet in my house. Wireless routers and the headset both operate at 2.4GHZ and they don't play well together. I thought it may have been my Belkin N1 Vision router so I went out and bought a Linksys WRT310N and it does the same thing. The remote computer have trouble connecting and when they do they get around 1mbps. Turn off the headset and poof, back to 36-54mbps. I have open tickets now with all 3 parties involved so hopefully there is a fix, otherwise the $106 headphones have to go in the closet and that would really p_ss me off.
I can't believe that this problem didn't present itself anywhere in their testing and QA process.

Im having the same issue also SabreHawke. I use my HS-1200, with my desktop replacement laptop, and off and on, the wifi light indicator turns off then on. Never had this issue before. Been using wireless channel 2 for about 3 years now, w/ great connection. Not sure what channel the headset uses. I cant use the default channels, i think 6, 9, 11, cause once someone turns on the microwave it disconnects. Guess i'll try some others, but channel 2 has been the best. Other than this i love the headset, :-).
    Edit: Did speakeasy speed test.
Normal (w/ headset off): Download ~10mbps w/ speedboost up to 16. Upload ~2mbps.
Headset On: Download ~1.5mbps. Upload ~1.0mbps.

Hi there Bananaman, you are one of those wonderful volunteers out there, anyway, as I have said purchased machine on 06 worked for at least year and a half then quit on me. I cannot access the internet, took it to office depot since I purchsed it from them, they're offering FREE tune up had me purchase a Linksys LAN card telling me the built in wireless netcard had given up on me. Did not help, they sent me home w/ the LAN card assuring me it will work since in my house I have a wide range of wireless internet connection whatever. Did not work either. Called IBM Lenovo only to be declined of tech support because machine not warranty covered. Yesterday, I tried to fix it(LOL) for a miracle to struck me but to my despair. I don't know what to do, I want to take it to service center recommended by IBM but got no green. I am hopeful that, being a member of the Lenovo community, I could find some real help from real people like you. These are the characters I see at the back of my machine I think as the product number, (TYPE  2511 - FEU  S/N  *******   0510) Thank you.

  • Help! Have a Linksys Router WRVS4400N, Ipad and Desktop doesn't get internet at same time. Just one of the other. How do I internet on both? Thx!

HELP! How do I get wireless internet on both my Ipad and Desktop? Have Linksys Router WRVS4400N. Only 1 device will work at 1 time. Something about a Learn MAC address? What should I do? Thanks! Tiggergirl

    Good morning
Hi Kathy,  my name is Johnnatan and I am part of the Small business Support community.
If you have an old firmware it would be a good idea to go out to Cisco.com and see if there is any firmware updates. I have looked on the site for you and I see the latest firmware is:2.0.2.1
    http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=282414016&softwareid=282487380&release=2.0.1.3&rellifecycle=&relind=AVAILABLE&reltype=all
You can also try to reset your device to its factory settings, to reset your router please take a object that has a point and hold the reset button in on the back for "atleast" 30 seconds until the lights on the front to start flashing.
About Mac address, you can map a Static IP with a specific mac address, You can folllow these steps in order to configure it.

  • Wireless internet not working at my house when I use my laptop (using a linksys wrt54g2 router)

I am using a laptop for wireless internet (Dell D610). I have no problem using wireless internet at my school and in other places, but at my house, I can’t browse the internet. The router at my house has a strong signal (4 or 5 bars) and when I try to connect to it, it says that I am connected, but when I open up the internet browser, I can’t get online. The router is in a room right next to mine and it is on the same floor. It is a Linksys WRT54G2 router.
When I go to the network connections folder, for the wireless network connection icon, it says “not connected, firewalled.” I can still browse the internet, though (at places other than my house).
Another thing that I want to mention- I can't connect to other routers in the neighborhood either (the ones that aren't secured). It just doesn't connect (but for the router in my house, it connects). But my roommate told me that a bunch of people have connected to this one guy's router.
What is the problem here? What can I do to make the internet work? Why would I be able to access the school's wireless internet and not the one in my house?

Whats the Wireless Settings you have set on your Router, I there might be the possibility that you have set the security mode on your Router too high thats the reason you are not getting connected to your Wireless Network. Follow the setps to change the Wireless settings on your Router and i think this might help in getting you connected to your wireless network.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on the Sub tab, Wireless MAC Filter..
Make sure the Wireless MAC Filter on your Router is Turned Off.
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • ITunes 8.1 works great but killed wireless internet connection

I installed version 8.1 on both my laptop( PowerBook g4/ OS 10.4.11) and desktop (imac intel / OS 10.5) and after restarting the computer, the wireless internet connection stopped working on both.
I would open Safari and it would be a blank page and and the circle would keep spinning.
So I tried my laptop at a different wireless hotspot and had the same result.
I then tried repairing permissions and I got a list of problems with iTunes/Network Utilities, they repaired and now when I open Safari I get the message that it can not connect to the internet.
I do get an internet connection using ethernet on both.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Did you by any chance also update the firmware on your Apple Airport Extreme (if that's what you have)?
I thought 8.1 killed my connection to my Apple TV, but it was the faulty firmware (see reports elsewhere in these forums).
Now that I have rolled back from 7.4.1 on my Airport I plan to try iTunes again (with white knuckles).

  • Invalid password when trying to connect to wireless internet

I have just bought a 20 inch iMac and am having troubling connecting to the wireless internet in this house. My mac address has been added to the administrators network and she has given me the password but it comes back invalid. I am putting it in in lower case, exactly as it is written. I have gone thru network diagnostics etc. but still does not work. I went into Airport Utility but it couldn't find anything and asked me to rescan.
Is there anyone out there that had a similar problem, or can anyone help. At the moment I am using the internet via their ethernet cable in someone else's room, but would like to use wireless in my own room.

If you are entering the correct password, then I can only assume that your MAC is incorrect in the router.
Your Mac has two MAC addresses - one for Ethernet and a different one for WiFI. Be sure that your WiFI MAC is the one added to the router for WiFi

  • Using Bootcamp Windows 7, my wireless internet stays connected most of the time, but occasionally says "no internet access", then reconnects after a period of time. How can I keep a stable connection?

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on Bootcamp. I've installed all Windows software, with all the drivers, and my wireless internet works fine. But, every once in awhile, it will say, "no internet access", and I'm unable to do anything until it restores. Like I've said, all the drivers have been installed, and they're both copied onto my desktop, and on a flash drive.
I need to keep a stable connection, because I only use my Windows partition for gaming, and when I get disconnected from the internet, I get booted from the game. Any advice?

what version of bootcamp you use to install all of the driver ?? is it the problem was from the beginning you installed windows or just now ?? or maybe you can try usb wifi to test the windows is not the problem..

  • Difficult to connect to wireless internet

    Hello,
I hope someone can help. I've been looking through these boards for days and nothing seems to work.
I am usually not able to connect to wireless internet if my macbook is more than about 10 feet away from my time capsule. However, SOMETIMES I am able to get a strong signal from another room - adding to my frustration.
    Here are its current settings:
Firmware 7.4.2 (I've tried all versions from 7.3.2 on - no noticeable difference)
    Connected to modem via ethernet.
    Radio mode 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Cannot install Airport Extreme Update 2007 002 because my hard drive does not meet volume requirements (???).
Therefore cannot install Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler.
TC is set to a unique channel according to iStumbler. Minimal interference.
    Many thanks for your suggestions.
    Paul

Wireless devices in the U.S. must by law, operate on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. The vast majority of wireless networks are running at the 2.4 GHz frequency, which is one of the same frequencies that cordless phones have been assigned.
I can't speak for Apple, but it's fair to say that they and all other manufacturers are limited to what they can do and have no control over that. The airways are already overcrowded and it will get much worse.
Your Time Capsule is capable of creating a wireless network at 5 GHz, so it's worth a try to see if that might solve your interference issues at 2.4 GHZ. There are far fewer networks in this range and cordless phones in general will not conflict with this frequency.
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Look for the Radio Mode setting and choose something like 802.11n only at 5 GHz.
    Update settings
The downside here is that older devices that operate on "g" speed will not be able to connect. I couldn't tell from your post whether you might have other devices there besides your Time Capsule and MacBook. I'm not sure if the MacBook will connect if it's more than a few years old, but worth a try.
Post back when you have had a chance to experiment.

  • Adding one IP address to Wireless Access Point

    Here is my situation....
We have a guest wireless internet at my hospital. This wireless vlan is only allowed to access the internet and nothing else (nothing on our internal network, basically a courtesy wireless network). I would like to have the guest able to print to a particular printer on our network. Can this be done?

Sorry, I'm an idiot. ha ha. yeah i added the printer to the guest network and it worked. Thank you!
Since it was a private VLAN, i had to hook up a computer on the wireless and get its ip address and subnet. Thank you!

  • Anyone have experience with Adtech IT Wireless Internet?

A potential client in Sacramento has limited wired Internet options and I was made aware of Adtech's wireless Internet solution, but I've never heard of them. If you've used them, what has your experience been? Have you used a different wireless Internet option that you like? Thanks.

As long as you have some text in the 'itunes:summary' and 'itunes:subtitle' tags for your episodes - which you do - iTunes will ignore the 'description' tag so I shouldn't worry about it.
I can't see any immediate reason why you can't download the September episode onto an iOS device, but not having one it's not something I can check: you could ask in the forums for iPad or iPhone.

  • Can i take this product put it in my truck and hook it to my sprint wireless internet conection

hp officejet 4500 wireless 7 64 bit windows 7 Can i take this product put it in my truk and fax paper work to my company with my sprint wireless internet connection which has a phone number. If it can be done could some one explain it to me.

Your email provider has blocked the standard mail port 25 for sending emails and is requiring a different port. This is to avoid mail relays that use mail clients to send spam. You need to find the port that is used by your provider for sending outgoing mail. Then change the settings in your email account on your phone to match the port. You will also have to provide some security credentials for the account.
You can also try deleting the email account from your iphone, and the adding the email account back as this will many times set the correct port for sending emails.
You could also do a Google search on the the settings for your device with your email provider. That will provide you with the proper settings.
