Adding names to Address Book from email

Panther's email had an icon in the toolbar enabling me to add the address of a currently open email to the address book. I can't find the same icon in Tiger's version and miss having it. I found a method to add the name via Help but it seems a step backward as far as I'm concerned. Do you know of a simple way to add names? Thanks in advance.

Hi.
In Tiger Mail:
Open a message, go to the Menu Bar, Messsage/Add Sender to Address Book or Coomand-Y.
Other way to do it is by clicking the From field of the opened message and select Add to Address Book.
Good Luck.

  • Adding Addresess to Address book from Email that is in CC not the sender

How can I add a group of Email addresses from an email that are in the CC line?

You can download a collection of AppleScripts called Mail Scripts at the following link.
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
The script to use from the collection of scripts is Add Addresses (Mail) which adds addresses found in the selected messages (in the header fields "From", "To", "Cc", and "Bcc") to the Address Book. This is much more flexible than the "Add Sender to Address Book" available in Mail and provides a convenient way for creating mailing lists.

  • When clicking on name in address book -the email address appears different in the email address bar and can't be sent -why?

I have been using thunderbird for some years - in last month when I have been trying to send some emails I have a problem with some of them in that part of the email address has changed when I insert it ino the address bar and has inverted commas around the first part of the address before the @. I have tried deleting the addresses and re-inserting them but the same thing happens. If I go into the address bar and delete the commas the email is sent - can I overcome this problem without having to go into each email? I send out emails to many people and changing each one that has the problem takes a long time. Not every email address has this problem. Many thanks -Tim

ok, I've spent some time doing various scenarios.
I have managed to replicate one scenario which does as you say.
If my contact in the address book:
With name details as Peter Foo
    email address: [email protected]
where there is an inserted space before the name peter, of course this is not instantly noticeable, but it is as if you hit the space bar just before typing the email address.
Then when I use the Contacts Sidebar in a Write message, it will add the email address like this:
    Peter Foo <" peter"@somewhere.com>
    which of course in invalid.
but in the address book, if highlight the contact, in the section below the email address in blue -if I click this to send an email the email address is printed exacly with the space and it will send as if nothing is wrong.
So i'm asking you to check those email addresses which insert incorrectly via the Contacts sidebar. They only do this for me if there is a hidden inserted space at the start of the email address.

  • Disable the global address book from email app?

I am syncing with Exchange, and when I go to type an address in the email application it first shows me the result from my contacts before flooding the suggestion list with crap from the GAL.
i.e. If I type "t" into the "TO" box it first shows a few results, my friend Tim, my other friend last name Thompson etc. Then after a second or 2, the list is flooded with any of the thousands of people in the GAL.
Is there no way to disable this? I never want to use the GAL really, but I do need to sync my contacts with Exchange.

    Hi,
    Please try the following commands:
    $filter = (Get-GlobalAddressList 'Default Global Address List').RecipientFilter
    Get-Recipient -RecipientPreviewFilter $filter | Where-Object {$_.HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled -ne $false} | Select-Object Name,PrimarySmtpAddress | Export-CSV c:\GAL.csv -NoTypeInformation

  • Creating a group in address book from a group of emails

    Hello,
I would like to create an email group in Address Book from a list of email addresses that was sent to me.
The scenario:  I receive an email from our team manager for my son's baseball team.  Listed in the "To:" header in the email are the 20 email addresses for the parents.  I would like to copy/paste those emails or highlight/drag them into a new Group created in Address Book.
How do I do this without adding each individual email into the address book and then dragging each individual contact into the Group?
    Thanks,

I too am looking for a solution. I found this script on another thread that worked but would rather a more direct connnection.

Which menu bar?  Finder or your email client?  Which email client are you using btw?  If your email client you can customize your menu through the view>toolbars menu.
    If Mail it's view>Customize Toolbar
Finder menu it's System Preferences>Users & Groups>your account>unlock the padlock>Login Items - add the address book by clicking the "+" sign.  When done lock the padlock.

Although clunky as you say, this sounds like a reasonably efficient way to accomplish what I was seeking.
Address Book has no global find/replace. Bob Grove suggested one possible workaround; however, a grep-capable text editor (eg, TextWrangler) is better than TextEdit if complex strings are involved.
An alternative is Bento (which is designed specifically to interact with the AB database), but it's not free.

  • How do i transfer my address book from one computer to another

Old computer is XP new compiuter is 7. Mozilla Thunderbird is the email program. Both are installed on separate computers.

On your old computer (XP), go to Thunderbird (TB)
    select Address Book
highlight which address book you want (such as Personal Address Book)
from menu bar select Tools then Export
enter a name such as addresses.ldif Use LDIF rather than CSV format!
select a destination folder such as Documents
    click Save
copy the file (addresses.ldif) to your new computer via disk, memory card, or even email!
put the file in your Documents folder on the new computer (Win7)
On your new computer, go to TB
    select Address Book
from menu bar select Tools then Import
    click Address Books then Next
    highlight Text File (LDIF, ...)
    click Next
select the folder (Documents) and file (addresses.ldif) and click Open
    the addresses will be imported
    success! click Finish
    Notes:
The address book you import will take on the name of the file without the .ldif extension (e.g. addresses). You can rename the file before you import it. Just keep the .ldif extension.
If you want more than one word in the name, use an underscore instead of a space (e.g. Personal_Contacts). Don't use spaces! They really complicate things.

  • How can I sync my address book from my imac to my ipad 3?

I have just bought an iPad 3 and want to copy my mail address book with email addresses intact from my iMac which has Snow Leopard, which I am happy with and do not want to change to Lion.   There must be an easy way, but I haven't found it

Running Snow Leopard or Lion have no bearing on syncing contacts from the Mac. I synced my contacts from my MacBook when I was running Leopard.
Connect the iPad to your Mac
    Launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side of iTunes under devices.
Click on the Info Tab at the top of itunes on the right side of the window
    Click on Sync Contacts
Select All contacts - or the selected groups that you want to sync
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

Whenever I click on an email address from within an email and ask to add it to my address book, the contact is added to Personal Address Book. How do I change that so that new addresses will be added to another book?

I do not know of a way to change the default but after you click the star beside the address to add it to the address book, click the star a second time to open the edit dialog box. There is a drop down list of your address books to make the change there.

  • Help with restoring Address Book from Time Machine

Problem: I really, really need to retrieve someone's number. I know it'll be in an old version of my Address Book. I can see when I open time Machine that my address book is backed up, but no matter the date I go to, it says the Address Book was last modified in 2012! I know for a fact I've updated (and backed up) the Address Book many times since then.
Whenever I try to restore the Address Book, I do Time Machine > Applications > Address Book > 'restore'. But whenever I do this, the mac refuses to open the restored Address Book because it's 'required by mac OS X'.
    I don't understand.
Please, how on earth do I dredge my Address Book from the depths of Time Machine?
    Please help!
    M

    Hello mb9236,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with restoring a contact from Time Machine.
It sounds like you are trying to restore the Address Book application.  The Address Book application is just the application and does not include the content in Address Book.
Instead, you will want to open Address Book and then launch Time Machine and restore your contacts from there.  Use the steps below to restore your contacts form a previous date (in step one instead of opening Mail or Finder, be sure you have Address Book open and in focus):
If you use Time Machine to back up your computer, you can easily bring back one or more items you’ve lost, or recover older versions of files you’ve changed.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. If you want to recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail.
If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock, or open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar and choose Enter Time Machine. If you back up to a Time Capsule or other network disk, a message briefly appears while Time Machine connects your computer to the backup disk.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through all the snapshots and backups Time Machine created. Gray tick marks on the timeline represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk.
If you need more information about an item, double-click to preview it. The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, and then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder. Time Machine may ask if you want to re-create one or more folders in order to return a restored item to its original location.
If an item you restore has the same name as another item on your computer, you’re asked if you want to keep the current item, the restored item, or both.
You can use Time Machine from within many applications. For example, you can open Address Book and then click the Time Machine icon in the Dock to recover contacts you may have accidentally deleted, or open iPhoto and then click the Time Machine icon in the Dock to view past versions of your iPhoto albums.

  • Transfer address book  from emac(os 10.3.9) to imac(os 10.5.6)

How can I transfer my address book contacts(email addresses) from the old emac(os 10.3.9) to the new imac (with os 10.5.6)? The migration assistant did not do it.

I never had Panther, but I would think that on the eMac, you could launch Address Book, select all of the entries, and drag them to the desktop or a usb memory stick. That should give a "mega-card.vcf" file with a name like "Alan Adams & 139 others.vcf"
Then take that file on the usb stick (or via email or whatever you need to do to transfer it to the iMac) and get it transferred to or plugged into your iMac. Doubleclick on that mega-vcf file and AddressBook will launch and import all the information from it into separate Address Book entries.
