Adding new imported songs on iTunes to my Library on External Drive

I have my main iTunes library on an external hard drive. My Mac's iTunes folder only contains the iTunes library file but all my songs are kept and imported on my external hard drive at home.
My question is:
While at work, I have imported some CDs. As default, since that external drive was not connected, it imports all on the computer's iTunes folder in the HD.
What's the best and easiest way to move these imported songs from the computer's drive to my external? Do I erase them from iTunes while keeping the files and re-open them at home when my external drive is connected so it imports them in the drive? Or do I simply move the song files to the external drive and re-locate them??
Appreciate any help on that. Thanks!

Ok. Got it.
Just need to copy the files' folders by dragging them to iTunes while my external HD is connected; it will add them in the original library location that I have selected (external) while keeping the library in iTunes intact.
Thanks anyway, it was clearly a stupid issue.

  • New iMac itunes not recognizing library on external drive

I'm trying to move my itunes media from my older powermac to my new imac. I kept my library on an external drive, so I thought it would be simple to just move that drive over to the new imac and create a path in the media folder location in itunes preferences to the library. I've done so, but the library is not registering in the new itunes. Obviously I'm doing something wrong here, and I haven't found anything that describes my exact scenario. All I'm doing is keeping the external drive on which the library and contents are stored and moving it from the old computer to the new.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Thanks Jim. I have tried what you have suggested, but it hasn't worked. iTunes isn't populating (for lack of a better word at the moment) with my music. I'm able to select the library and seemingly iTunes accepts the library, but I'm not able to access the media. I tried reconnecting the drive back to the old computer to make sure iTunes worked on it, and it worked fine. I'm stumped.

  • Itunes not locating library on external drive

    arrrggggh...
i have faced this before but forgot how to resolve it. i rarely use itune except to import more music and update ipod/appleTV. my library is all ripped cd's on an external drive. the correct drive and file is shown under edit>preferences>advances for the iTune Media Folder Location.
today i fired up the system and imported 'take 5 / dave brubeck'. it successfully was ripped to the external drive and appleTV sync'd.
however all of my other songs (>10k) show up in the playlist with the dreaded '!'. when i click on them iTunes says they cannot be located and would i like to search? searching attaches that song, but i do not want to do this 10k times.
how can i get iTunes to find all songs in the library?
    tia

edit to add.. the library (.itl) file is located on the C drive correctly, it is just not associating with the actual MPEG files on the I drive...

  • After OS clean install I can't get iTunes to recognize library on external drive

I have a Mac Pro that had an SSD boot drive and a separate hard drive that contains my iTunes Library and Media files.  Because of problems with my boot drive I erased the SSD and did a clean install of Mavericks.  Now I can't get iTunes to recognize the iTunes Media files on the hard drive.  I've gone to Preferences/Advanced in iTunes and changed the "iTunes Media folder location" to point to the hard drive with the iTunes data on it.  Nothing happens when I do this. No dialogs. Nothing.  I've trashed iTunes preferences to no avail.  I don't know what to do to fix this or troubleshoot it.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Nothing should happen when you do this. This simply tells iTunes where to put anything you add after this. It doens't tell iTunes where anything already in iTunes is located.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the hard drive.

  • ITunes cant see library on external drive (PC)

I’ve followed all the instructions here for moving my iTunes library to an external hard drive. But every time I start up iTunes it is empty, still looking for the library on the C drive. The music is now located on the E: drive but I cannot get iTunes to look there. I did the 5 steps listed here and Consolidated the library and iTunes has moved all the music over the E: The preferences are set to look at the E: drive but when I start iTunes it still looks to the C: drive.

No there isnt any files call library in the folder i created I am now in the process of copying them back but I guess I will loose all my playlists and playcounts. I do have a Copy of my drive that i made with carbon copy cloner. So maybe it will be best to boot from there, restore and start again.
Chris it was just the media folder. I was following the instructions on the apple support page. Got to point 14 didn't get the warning but did seen to have a brand new itunes, so emptied the trash as they said expecting everything to be fine but it wasnt.

  • I have a Ipod touch and recently added new music to my itunes library on my laptop. When I sync with my ipod, the new music does not show up on my ipod even though the sync process seems to be working.

I have an Ipod touch and recently added new music to my Itunes library. When I sync with the library, the new music does not show up on my ipod. The sync process seems to be working and there is still plenty of space on the Ipod for new music so I'm not sure what the problem is!

What happens when you try to sync?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
Do you have any Restrictions (Settings>General>Restrictions) set that would prevent syncing those songs?

  • Audio CD burning error- I opted for importing songs into iTunes as MP3

    Hi,
Before I started importing songs into iTunes, I chose int eh iTunes preferences to import all songs as MP3, as I wanted the option of being able to burn CDs to play on my car MP3 player.
When I tried to burn a CD, I got an error message that these songs could not be burnt onto the CD. This had the option where I could see all the errors and the list was of all the songs that I was trying to burn.
BTW, I created a new playlist, dragged the required songs to this playlist from the library and pressed the burn disc option.
What am I doing wrong? Could it be that the drive is faulty?

First of all, how long is the total time of all songs? If it is more than 80 minutes, you can't record to the CD as an audio CD. If that is the case, and you say you have an MP3 cd player in your car... you might want to try burning to the disc as an MP3 CD. Go to iTunes preferences, then click "Advanced," then "Burning" and you'll see an option for "MP3 CD." Click that, and then when you burn the disc, you can put as many songs as will fit onto the disc.
Also, rewritable CDs aren't any better... as a matter of fact, a lot of audio CD players can't read them. A regular CD-R should be fine, even one rated at 40x speed.

  • Lockup when playing or importing songs into iTunes 7.6.1

Have anyone experienced a lockup in Windows when playing or importing songs into iTunes 7.6.1? Not sure if this is a problem of the new version or something I need to diagnose with my PC. I know alot you guys probably have MACs so I would appreciate any feedback you might be able to lend. Thanks in advance!!!

UPDATE: When all else fails reinstall everything! (without offending PC users, this is an accepted practice around here for pc software issues.....sorry). Anyway, trashing the old Spin DR and Toast Titanium and reinstalling seemed to get me going again. Sorry to bother everyone.

  • Garageband wont import song from iTunes

Hi,  I've imported songs from iTunes to Garageband many times by just selecting and dragging the song from iTunes into the GarageBand application window.  Not sure why... but now that does not work--GarageBand is not accepting the song when I drag it over.  Help!  I'm using iTunes 10.6.3 and GarageBand 4.1.2.
Update--just saw posting from HangTime with  link to instructions to highlight song in iTunes, select "Show in Finder" from the iTunes File pull-down menu, and then drag the song into the Garageband window from the Finder.  It worked. Just wondering (now) why GarageBand is not allowing me to simply drag a song into Garageband directly from iTunes.

Thank you for posting that 'update' Kingpalm. It just solved my (same) problem, today 1st January 2014!

Did you purchase them on your iPad with the same Apple ID that you are using for iTunes on your iPhone and that iTunes on your Mac is sign into?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The easiest thing to do would be to sign into your iTunes account on your computer, connect your phone and sync. iTunes should copy anything from your phone that isn't already in your library on the computer.

  • HT1725 When I download a song from iTunes into my library, it often says it has downloaded, charges me for it, and on the song in my library shows the full playing time. However, when I play the song, at around halfway through it skips to the next song?

    i'm just wondering:
    a) why it does this
and b) how to stop it doing this, because it still charges me for the song :/

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • I have moved my Itunes media folder to an external drive and Itunes does not find the items in the folder

Running Win7. I moved my entire Itunes library to an external drive to free up space on my laptop. Itunes recognized the change and all was well. That worked fine and I have synced several times from the laptop with the library on the external drive. Now the laptop is in the shop (sigh, not Itunes related a dead network card). I connected the external drive to my desktop, made sure my software was up to date. opened ITunes went to edit/preferences/advanced. Went to change Itunes media folder location and navigated to the proper folder on my external drive and clicked OK. None of the music, videos, etc, that are in that folder show up in iTunes on the desktop. Restarted ITunes, no help, reboot computer, no help. Have I done something wrong or left out a step. I could copy all the media onto the desktop individually and build new playlists but that seems like something that should not be needed? One of the reasons I moved my Itunes media folder to the external drive was so I could use the laptop for iTunes while travel and the desktop for iTunes while at home. Do I have to copy the entire folder to my desktop and take up space there? That would be counterproductive to using the external drive. I searched and saw a hint to hold down shift while starting ITunes but that did not change anything. Any help would be most appreciated!
    Jim in WV

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.
