Adding New Macs to ARD

Hi Group!
Lately we've been having trouble adding new Mac's on our network to ARD. 10.6.x and 10.5.8.
The window for the admins user name and password drops down, but then immediately goes right back up. I've tried a gang of things to try and figure this out, locally and on the target Mac, but nothing seems to remedy the problem.
Anyone seen this?
Thanks a bunch!

Just saw the same thing and figured it out. ARD keeps offline machine's IP address in its database. When I tried to add a brand new machine, it got the same IP as the offline machine from the DHCP server. This caused an inability to add the new machine exactly as you saw - the window goes right back up. When I deleted the old machine from All Computers, I could immediately add the new machine. Seems like a bug to me. Now I have to add back the old machine.

  • Adding new printer with ARD 2.2

I just installed a new printer in a lab of 27 eMacs (an hp 1200). I set up the printer on one of the eMacs and now would like to use ARD 2.2 to install the printer on the other computers. Where is the information about installed printers stored in 10.4? I copied the /users/username/library/printer folder from the eMac with the new printer setup to one of the other eMacs but it didn't copy the new printer into that folder. Is there a better way to do this? I thought that there would be a folder or file that stores this info. that I could easily copy to the other eMacs. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Printer information is stored in /etc/cups. Here you will have several files containing printer information, such as cupsd.conf and printers.conf. There is also the ppd folder that contains the ppds for the printer/s that have been added.
I haven't tried this but I think if you copy the two files and folder mentioned above and the file/s from the ~/library/Printers folder, then this may be sufficient.
Of course the printer would have to be a network printer. If it is physically connected to the eMac then this won't be suitable. Sorry if this is obvious but you didn't mention how the printer was configured so I couldn't assume you were aware of this.

  • Adding new mac mini to network causing problems

    Hello,
I have a small home network that has been working great, and just bought a mac mini for media purposes. Unfortunately, adding the mini has ruined my network performance, and I don't understand why.
    Previous Setup:
    - airport extreme (firmware 7.4.2)
    - 2 macbook pros using wireless (leopard & snow leopard)
    - airport express only used to make a printer accessible wirelessly (6.3, "join a wireless network")
    - iPhone
that worked great, but one of the macbook pros was doing double duty as media and work computer. Also, there was no nice way to do time machine backups without physically plugging in a USB HD. I was using USB into airport extreme, but that is not supported and never worked well for me (though it seems to work for others).
So, I bought a mac mini in Oct' 2009 (immediately after small upgrades were announced).
    New setup:
    - airport extreme
    - mac mini using ethernet cable to airport extreme (USB HD shared for macbook pros to do wireless time machine backups) mac mini running snow leopard
    - 2 macbook pros as before
    - airport express serving printer as before
    - iPhone
    Problems:
    - very slow wireless (skype is unusable)
    - dropping wireless connections a lot (disassociating with XXX (reserve 2) message)
I tried turning off everything for a few min and trying again with the mac mini unplugged (eg. previous setup). Everything worked great, Skype 2 way video was fine. Then I plugged in the mini, and again I have the same problems.
It's frustrating because everything is made by Apple, and I bought the **** mac mini partially because the airport extreme-USB HD solution (eg. mimicking a time capsule) is not officially supported.
It seems like there is some weird interference being caused by the mini. It's not a wireless issue (b/c it's plugged in), but maybe it's a DHCP problem.
Also, I can't find where one sets the maximum number of DHCP leases that the airport extreme will offer. I seem to remember that setting, and thought that might be the problem, but I can't find it now.

For those that might find this thread:
    - moving the mini and the airport extreme about 18 inches apart helped some, will monitor this.
here's a couple useful articles about the interference issues in general:
    http://www.macgeekery.com/hacks/hardware/optimizingairportconnectivity
    http://www.macworld.com/article/60801/2007/11/dec07mobilemac.html
I can't turn off bluetooth b/c that's the mini's keyboard and mouse. I tried to move to the 5GHz band for the wireless... which seems to work pretty well for the macbook pros, but the airport express I have (for printing) won't support that so it's a no-go solution for now (unless I spend even more money for one of the new ones).
Seems odd that the mini and airport extreme which look like they were designed to be stacked on top of each other, actually don't work well that way.

  • Help adding new Macs to the household, creating shared drive for iTunes,

    I have a few questions:
My husband and I recently both got MacBook Pros. Our former set-up was a iMac which backs up to a 500 G Time Capsule. We have a large iTunes library and iPhoto library on the iMac. The iMac is going to turn in to the kids computer. I would like to do the following:
    1. transfer photos to my MBP (#1). Will the Time Machine backup for the iMac become significantly smaller, making room for the soon to be larger backup of the MBP #1? Little confused how that is going to work.
    2. have shared access to iTunes library? basically it would be nice for all 3 computers to have the complete iTunes library, but I would also like to backup all 3 computers using Time Machine and don't want to have triplicates of the library. I was trying to figure out if the way to go is to put the iTunes on a shared drive on the Time Capsule, but is there a way for the 3 computers to 'sync' to the shared drive when new music is added? Finally, if the iTunes is within a shared drive does that mean it won't be backed up?
Much appreciation and thanks to anyone who can help make sense of this.

Update: Downloaded free version of Syncopation, and am hopeful this is going to some what solve my iTunes issue.
New question would be: when creating the Time Machine backups for MBP#1 and MBP #2 can I NOT back up the iTunes folders? That would save approx. 36G on each of these backups, right? 72G total of the Time Capsule space. And the assumption is that with Syncopation, as long as the iMac iTunes is backed up then, you have everything.

  • Adding new RAM to Mac Pro

I just got my new Mac Pro. It comes with (2) 1G sticks of DDR2 RAM. I bought (4) 2G sticks of DDR2 RAM from OWC to put in it. Can I just add my 2G sticks and keep the 1G sticks in, or do they all have to be the same size?
I spoke with 2 different Apple reps on the phone today, and they gave me 2 different answers. One said no - they all have to be the same size. The other said I could use different sizes, but they just have to be paired.
Anyone know what the right answer is?

    Hi
my Mac Pro configuration in the system profiler only shows 512MB cards in Raiser B DIMM1 and DIMM2, allthough I have added new 2G cards into Raiser A DIMM3 and DIMM4.
The Raiser A DIMM1 and DIMM2 slots are occupied by 512MB cards as well, but these are also not visible in the Memory Slot summary.
Question: It seems I have 6GB memory, but only 1 MB visible in the Memory Slot summary. Is this possible and how can I activate the whole memory?

  • New Mac, how to keep Date Added info in new iTunes

Yesterday I bought a new iMac, replacing my older one.
I have 66GB of iTunes Music & Videos which I saved on an external hard drive. I copied the "iTunes" folder from my Mac onto the hard drive.
I know I can just drag the folder into iTunes on my new Mac, but I would lose all the "date added" and "play count" information. I see that in the iTunes folder I saved, there is an "Album Artwork" folder, an "iTunes Library database file", an "iTunes 4 Music Library database file", an "iPod Games Library database file", and an "iPod Games" folder.
Does the iTunes Library database file contain all the information? Because I tried to replace that file with the current one on my new Mac, and when I opened iTunes, all my songs, playlists, and data added information was there, but all the songs had an exclamation mark beside them. So then I dragged the iTunes folder into iTunes but then I had doubles of each thing.
So my question is, how can I import my music by keeping the Date Added, Play Count, and playlist information?

Normally if you want a trouble free move, all your music files must be in the iTunes Music folder as designated in the preferences.
However if you music is on an external drive and the full path to the music files will NOT change, this is no essential. iTunes cannot tolerate any change to the path to music files that are not in the iTunes Music folder. If the files are in the iTunes music folder, it can tolerate changes to the path above the level of the iTunes Music folder.
All the data on playlists, count, ratings is in iTunes Library.itl which by default is in ...My Music\iTunes assuming you haven't moved it. This iTunes folder also contains your album artwork, so you need to save the whole folder.
When you have iTunes installed and working and before you add any more music, you will need to replace the iTunes folder created by the new installation of iTunes with your original iTunes folder and ensure the path for the iTunes Music folder is correctly set in the preferences.
Because it sounds as though you have a somewhat non standard arrangemnt, I can't be sure that what I have said is exactly right but I hope I have given you neough to sort it out.

  • New Mac Pro with FCP X makes  added text titles gibberish until rendered

While the latest version of FCP X works fine on my iMac, on the 2013 mac pro when I add a title (apple supplied) there is only a bunch of squiggles on my monitor when I try to play the segment.  If it renders then all is good.  The problem is it is difficult to edit the titles (size, font, etc) since they are not legible.  This is with a new project, standard footage beneath the title, etc.  I think this is a bug in how the GPU works in the new desktop mac pro.  No other problems seen, anyone else?
    OS 10.9.2.

I also did re-boot prior to re-opening FCP X.  Another thing, once rendered, I can make changes to the text and while it is re-rendering this anomoly does not happen (bar over rendering section with text but can skim normally).  It is only when adding new text (such as basic title, blur, etc) that it does not display correctly.  I did upgrade my memory with OWC 64 G, and use a promise Pegasus 2 R6 to store all the video only using my internal drive for boot and programs.  I have encountered no other problems.

  • Lost music I added to iTunes when I did current update. It is on my iPad, but do not know how to get it onto new Mac.

This is the second time I have updated to a newer version of Itunes and when complete the only music i have access to is the purchased music.I loaded several hundred songs to my former computer. It got wet and I lost entire hard drive, nothing was recoverable. Fortunately i have all music and pictures on my IPad, do not know how to get music I did not purchase from Itunes  onto Itunes on my new Mac. This is my second MAc in less than 3 years due to my accident.

You only get one download of rentals (in the US you can re-download some films, but I'm not sure whether that applies to rentals). If the film is on yoru computer's iTunes, then connect the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand side of iTunes under 'Devices', and the use the Films/Movies tab on the right-hand side to sync the film to the iPad.
    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657 :
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.

  • Adding new hard drive to Mac Pro (quad core)

I've just ordered a new Mac Pro quad core (2.66 GHz) with one GB HD. Since Apple is charging £240 for a second drive I decided to get it from somewhere else. I found a 1GB Western Digital Caviar Green but I also noticed 1GB WD Caviar Black. I wonder if anybody has any experience of those drives and would they work with the latest Mac Pro ?
Does anybody knows what make of drive is Apple using in their latest Mac Pros ?

  • Spotlight is not working on brand new Mac mini

    Hi,
I got an issue with two brand new Mac minis running 10.7.3 (11D50d):
Spotlight is not working. I'm only getting the Wikipedia-Search.
    Here's what I did:
    Installation:
    - took the stock Minis and set up two users, admin and user (limited account)
    - updatet the System
    - installed manually: Adobe Reader X, Office 2011, Firefox 12, Flip4Mac, Perian, Cyberduck, Google Earth 6.2 (the installer without the updater), VLC 2
    - installed using AppStore: CalendarBar, TextWrangler, Unarchiever
    - copied a few documents (Word and Excel files) from a PC to the Desktop
    Troubleshooting:
    - tried to restart Spotlight by adding the entire harddrive to privacy using »Spotlight« within the System Preferences
    - that threw an error "no priviliges"
    - started the System from the recovery system (on an USB-thumbdrive) and repaired permissions
    - that did not help
    - tried to restart Spotlight through the Terminal, running the command: sudo mdutil -E /
    - that command returned: No index.
    - the tried: sudo mdutil -i on /
    - returned: Error: unable to perform operation.  (-400) No index.
    - went the hard way
    - unloaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    - erased the Spotlight folder: sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100/
    - loaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
That made everything work fine until I did a restart of the System. After the mini restarted I was back at square one...
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
Apple support suggested to reinstall the system. Something I can't do right now, as people need to work on those computers and cannot take a tow hour break...

    Hi Ray Land,
We can help narrow down the cause.  What operating system are you using on your new Mac Mini?
If you are running the Mountain Lion OS, you can download the latest driver here.  An important note is that the current print queue must be deleted before installing the new driver.  This will ensure proper communication.

  • (How) Can I use Existing Time Machine On New Mac Without Erasing Original TM Backups?

I just got through doing a clean install from Mavericks to Yosemite and now I'm trying to attach and recognize the original Time Machine Drive (TMD)
I chose to install as a new computer and did not choose a Time Machine backup option because the original TMD was not attached at the time of installation.
Upon arriving at the desktop and connecting my original TMD, I was able to see it in finder but Time Machine did not automatically accept it.
I am able to see the disk in Time Machine but it doesn't tell me that its got data on it .
HERE'S THE ANXIOUS MOMENT:  If I select TMD, which is the original, will it overwrite all that orignal information, or will it continue adding to it?
I've read under different parts of the forum that if you go through this process during the original setup and the Time Machine drive is attached to the computer then you will be prompted to inherit the old Time Machine. Since I didn't have the drive attached, I didn't see that.
Now back to desktop and into the Time Machine utility:  This option to inherit doesn't seem to exist or is obvious.  The only option after selecting the drive in Time Machine  is "Use Disk".  If I click this, will it erase my original data or will it ask to inherit the drive?  It's not very clear what will happen after I click "Use Disk".
Thanks so much to anyone who can help, Jeff

Thanks for the link. I went there but didn't find any information on how to inherit the backup history.  The link says "If you’re replacing an old Mac and want the new Mac to use the backups from the old one, click Inherit Backup."  At what point in the migration process does it ask "to specify whether you (I) want a new Mac to inherit a backup"? It seems like I got quite a few levels into Migration assistant and the last click that I did not click seemed like it was good to start the process without telling me anything about inheriting anything.
Any suggestions or did I not go far enough?
    From Apple Website below
OS X Yosemite: If you want a new Mac to “inherit” your backup history
You can move the backup history from one Mac to another, but after the new Mac “inherits” the backup history, you can’t use the backup history on the original Mac.
You’re asked to specify whether you want a new Mac to inherit a backup if you do any of the following:
Use Migration Assistant to transfer your settings from an old Mac to a new one.
Use Migration Assistant to transfer your settings from a Time Machine backup of an old Mac to a new one.
Clone the disk you use to start your Mac, or physically move it from an old Mac to a new Mac.
    Replace your computer’s main board.
If you’re replacing an old Mac and want the new Mac to use the backups from the old one, click Inherit Backup.
If you plan to continue to use your old Mac, click Create New Backup to preserve the backup history and start separate backups for the new Mac.
Connect a new backup disk to your Mac
Transfer your info from a PC

  • How do I move my iMail accounts and settings to a new mac?

How do I move my iMail accounts and settings to a new mac when both machines are running Mountain Lion?
On the destination Mac, I have two mail accounts that I want to keep, so essentially I will be adding another 4 accounts (from source mac) to the exting 2 accounts (on destination mac).  How can this be done?

If the request above is too difficult (no replies??), then can someone help me with moving my mail & settings between the two Mountain Lion machines (the 3 mail accounts from the source machine to be moved to the new mac - the 2 mail accounts on the new Mac can be trashed if required - simple move from one machine to another)?  Is that easier??

  • I lost my home folder all my settings are gone. like i have a new Mac.

I was cleaning up the icons on the left side of the screen under the bar. My Rheta/Home icon was not there, nor was the Desktop, even the Computer icon was gone. In moving Pictures, Movies, Documents, Desktop and Rheta/Home back in the order I thought they should be I found Iphoto6 in the column and thought...this is an alias not needed here. Rather to access my Pictures I should choose the Pictures Icon. I had moved it also.
I had recently started dragging image files after importing and burning DVD backups of my SLR camera imports. Once files were off camera media and into computer and burned. I had read to drag them to External Drive and then delete from my primary startup drive. The reason. I have only 14 GB left on hard drive and need to download Lightroom and Photoshop CS3 before April 30.
I suddenly was presented with a welcome screen to IPHOTO 6 and would I like to watch Quictime educational material...like I had a new upgrade of IPHOTO.
Then I noted I had no images in my IPHOTO library.Great. I went to Rheta/Home and a whole new desktop is there with large Icons, none of my settings, and no email...wants me to set up like I bought a new computer. The only thing left is Safari works and has my Bookmarks. My address book is gone. I guess I could say like another person just wrote...Help I have a new computer..where did my home folder go and how do I get back to my settings? i am very much confused, frustrated/ my last experience bringing a consultant here because my hard drive is full cost $300. Only thing accomplished is he set me up on a new external hard drive with Super Duper. But i have had a messed up system of lost IPHOTO library and all my original files I kept in a file under Pictures in same heirachy as Music, Pictures, i had a folder called Pictures_notIPHOTO. This folder is my whole original and edited Photoshop files. Most of which I had dragged to my partitioned external drive as they were older and I needed space. But alas, all the dragging ended up in me inadvertently dragging the IPHOTO library there and then deleting the Trash as anything in the trash added to my full hard drive. I had only 2 GB at one point and warnings from Apple to delete files, etc.
So I have one external with .Mac Backup which I stopped using after the consultant and I can't get it to mount. It is a LaCie 160. I read others lost their LaCies after upgrading Tiger to 4.9.
Today...after my long explanation....How do I get my own settings back instead of this blank desktop? Please I know this is a lot of information. But the biggest deal is losing my desktop or Home folder settings I guess.Thanksing anyone in advance. I cannot afford another wasted $300. I could buy a new mac. • Using the same external drive with Time Machine on new mac?

I recently got a new mac because my old one broke. Thankfully, I had a fresh backup on Time Machine ready to restore onto my new computer. But when I try to use Time Machine with my new computer, it keeps wanting to do a whole new backup. It won't recognize the latest backup to only add new or changed files.
Here's a breakdown of my events:
    new computer
restore Time Machine on new computer at install
want to continue using the external drive with Time Machine from where I left off (only adding new files since the last backup) on my new computer
Time Machine wants to do a whole new backup
Question: How can I continue to use my existing external hard drive with Time Machine on my new computer, picking up where I left off (not a new, complete backup)?
My old computer was Snow Lepoard, my new one is Lion.

    Bergers wrote:

That should have left a "trail" in your SystemMigration log, so Time Machine can figure out what happened and automatically "inherit" the old backups.  But sometimes, obviously, that doesn't work.
Since it didn't, there's a chance you can do it manually.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
