Adding (not replacing) a sound card

Every previously-owned computer included extra slots for expansion cards - not so my Pavilion HPE-112Y, Product #VT637AAR-ABA. What's worse, the sound handler is not a separate card but is built right into the motherboard - and that device is acting up. I still can play audio files via Windows Media Player, Quicktime, or other programs, but the sound device apparently is not correctly reporting the file type to other programs. This has sabotaged my ability to load sound into Poser 8, which I otherwise could do.
With the help of Poser support staff, I have ruled out all other possibilities (I just downloaded and installed the latest codec pack for Windows 7, which ruled out the last alternative cause. I am NOT missing codecs).
Replacing the soldered-in sound device is out of the question, so how do I add a sound card?
This question was solved.

Milt, any of the Creative Labs Soundblasters should work fine. They are rated highly. However, I have continued to use my integrated sound because drivers for the Soundblaster have been known to cause problems. This is the case with any sound drivers, however. If this is the only way that you can use Poser, give it go.
Good luck!

  • Alsa does not select correct sound card. SOLVED

I have onboard sound and do not have any additional sound cards installed. Alsa detects two soundcards, but for some reason seems to prefer the one that doesn't work. I am honestly not sure what the other audio device is; I do not have a second sound card installed, nor a modem or a PC speaker or any other audio device that I know of. It has always been that way, and I didn't look into it any deeper than that. I have been using Arch Linux for a about four years and the audio has worked flawlessly until I re-installed a few days ago.
For reference, the HDA NVidia sound card is the one I want to output sound. The non-working one is Conexant CX8801.
    My symptoms are as follows:
    $ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    # cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [CX8801 ]: CX88x - Conexant CX8801
    Conexant CX8801 at 0xf9000000
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfe024000 irq 23
As you can see, the Conexant CX8801 (the wrong card) takes the index 0 position.
My usual alsa setup routine is to run the alsaconf script. The alsaconf script edits /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf for me, where it should explicitly identify the HDA NVidia card as index 0. In the sound.conf below, alsaconf generated the first two lines. I wrote the third line as a course of troubleshooting, but it still does not work.
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
#THESE LINES WERE GENERATED BY ALSACONF SCRIPT
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
#THIS LINE WAS GENERATED BY ME
    option snd-hda-intel index=0
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
    # /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
    # NOTICE THERE ARE NO CONFIGURATIONS IN THIS FILE. EMPTY.
I am by no means an alsa guru, so that's why I've enlisted the help of the forums. Tell me, what am I forgetting? What don't I know?

    Install asoundconf http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23382
    do
    asoundconf list
to find out the correct name, then do
    asoundconf set-default-card bla
    to set the default card.
asoundconf creates a ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf and sets an include for that fil in ~/.asoundrc

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.1 not remembering default sound card

Problem: My selected sound card, a Motu 8Pre (FW800), is not being remembered as the defualt audio out in Sys~prefs.
Additional: The Motu 8Pre is a powered soundcard, which requires it to be switched on as the computer posts, this was never an issue in Lion as the Sound Card was already on and sync'd by the time the computer had reached the GUI Login. Now, ML will select either the defualt built in audio or my external thunderbolt monitor as its defualt sound output device, eventhough the Motu 8Pre is on the list and in the same position in the list (middle) in the sound output selection screen.
    Any ideas/help?
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunatley, no. As the list in the audio selection is a, well, select only, non editable interface. :/

  • Clicks & synch loss on firewire sound card (not due to sound card!)

    Bonjour, from France !
Ok my firewire port does work when it has to mount a drive.
But it really makes the biggest mess in the universe when it comes down to streaming audio data to my external firewire sound card, a t.c. electronic konnekt 8. Ok ok I see you guys comming with the "read the notice of your soundcard you idiot" answers ! But it's not just me. My brother has a firewire m-audio audio interface on his intel iMac (first generation) and he is having the same mess, and a friend also had another m-audio firewire model and had the same problems. Of course, drivers are up to date.
The problems are : mainly random clicks and sound gaps when playing audio, sometimes lasting a few seconds - sometimes loss of synchronisation leading to strong sound degradation.
So my question is : this issue is obviously a general (mac ?) firewire related issue as several configurations have experienced it. Does anyone out there know how i could fix it ?
    Thanx for your time,
    Michael

All I can say I've got the same problems...
I've got a Saffire Pro 26 I/O and it was rock solid on my Powerbook, even with a FW400 drive daisy chained and recording 10 tracks at once.
The same interface on my Macbook Pro and Mac Pro is constantly crackling, losing sync etc.
It's also much more sensitive to FW harddrives sucking the bus dry on my Intel Macs.
I've got the same sort of problems with my Line6 USB devices (Toneport, PODxt, PODxt Pro) on both Intel Macs, although they were rock-solid on my Powerbook. (and I'm always using up-to-date drivers).
It's as if Apple dropped the ball with the new USB and Firewire chipsets on the Intel motherboards.
If anybody knows of a nice firewire interface that won't go flaky on the new Intel Macs (and can handle 8 channels of ADAT I/O) let me know

  • Firewire 400 not powering external sound card

I have just got a new Macbook pro, primarily for music performance & production. I have a Firewire 400 bus powered sound card which worked perfectly on my old Powerbook. When I connected the sound card to my Pro last night it would not power up. When I connected the cards external power source it worked fine.
Is this caused by a faulty Firewire slot or are the specs of the Macbook Pro firewire slots different to that of a Powerbook. This is a concern as it was important not be be reliant on power sources during performances.
    Any advice or information here?

it would help if you mention the external interface model.
the mbp's firewire is different from the powerbook.
for my Firebox, the only way to go bus, is to start off with it plugged in to an outlet - plug it into the mbp, than you can unplug from the outlet. (needs a jumpstart)
for me this is not an issue, as i am always running off power.

  • Windows does not detect my sound card

Hello, I have a thinkcentre m58p dt. I had to reinstall windows(same version which was already installed before) but since I did it integratedsound behaves a strange way. Windows detects it and it appears in the device windows menu. I can use headphones but I can’t use the speaker like I used to do. Windows says the device is not connected.

    Spinedoc,
This problem may be caused by the USB ports on your system not providing the required amount of power at device start. There are a few ways to get around this problem:
) Make sure that you have all of your motherboard, chipset, and USB updates available for your system installed.
    2) Go into Device Manager/Uni'versal Serial Bus Controllers and double click on one of your USB root hubs (or USB 2.0 root hub). Go to the power management tab and take the checkmark out of the top option that says to allow Windows to disable power to the device. Repeat this for all the root hubs.
    3) If none of the others work, then you will want to try the card on another system, or with a powered USB hub to ensure that there is no problem with the sound device itself. If it works on another system then you will want to try it with a powered USB hub on the system in question.

  • Limited sound after replacing sound card

  • No audio playing - even after replacing sound card

i have a 1.33 17inch g4 powerbook. It shows the volume as being on and lists my audio in and out properly, but there is no sound, no startup chime, no alerts, nothing. I tried plugging in headphones to make sure it was not the speakers and they didnt work either. I figured this meant a dead sound card since the headphones plug directly into the card.
Now i have replaced the sound card and there is NO CHANGE in the sound behavior at all.
The system still shows I have audio in and out, but i cant hear anything through the speakers or through headphones.
    any ideas? thanks

I have also had this problem. I have inherited the computer from my uncle and the sound was not working from the day I received it. It came back temporarily yesterday but has disappeared again. Any ideas?

  • Adobe Audition does not work together with Audigy sound cards.

Dear friends, pleasae, help. I use Adobe Audition sound processing program, my sound cars are of the Audigy line. Recording control does not work, a known bug, says Adobe. Play control works fine, but I'd like to make quality recordings. Something is not O.K.with the ASIO system, I figure. The case is the same with PCI as well as PCMCIA Audigy products.
    Tell me, please:
-Is there a patch or workaround to fix this problem?
-If not Audigy, what sound cards then?
Getting help from Adobe isn't quite simple, but maybe, Audigy fans know better.
    [ordas]

If you mean the recording source/level control in Surround Mixer (etc.) ... it is not working because of it's bypassed by the ASIO driver ... so, it's not a bug but normal behaviour. You just adjust the recording level in Audition (or in any other software). Normally you need to select
    - "AnalogMix()" input port option for analog line sources like Line-In, Audio CD, AUX-In, etc.
    - (Mix L and Mix R are equal w/ the famous "What U Hear" ...
    - S/PDIF for digital input
    - etc.. here are some reading on Creative Audigy ASIO matter -
    http://forums.creative.com/creativel...essage.id=1726
Remember also set monitoring properly in software so you can hear what you're recording. This is normally set through a tiny 'speaker icon' found in every tracks header ('settings options').
BTW, if you check the "Wave" source channel/slider when running in ASIO mode, you'll find out that it won't work either (it's all the same if you mute it). This is normal behaviour too, even when working in WDM/KS (Kernel streaming mode (or w/ Asio4All (which uses WDM/KS functionality))) ... it's just because of the kmixer is being bypassed ...

  • Problem vith T61 sound card not regocnized with Windows 7 ultimate

When I try to Install SoundMax, I get the dreaded "The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware" error
I have found other threads with Windows XP but haven't found any with Windows 7
Is there a way to force to install these drivers? or can it be accounted as hardware error?
Windows itself also does not recognize the sound card in any way.
All the updates have been performed and absolutely no hint of available sound card. (Except fot the bluetooth external audio controller)

is this the driver that you're trying to install?  does your sound device show up in device manager?  is there a yellow tag on it? if this is the one you're trying to install and it won't did you try to manually update the driver from device manager.  don't let windows find the driver. point the update to the folder where the driver is.

  • Sound card installed but not work

I've just reinstalled win xp and installed the creative drivers on the cd, rebooted the computer and was getting sound fine. I went ahead and installed some other drivers and software and now I'm getting no sound. I've go to the add hardware wizard and clicked on Creative SB Audigy (which has a yellow exlamtion point next to it) and clicked next and then I get this message:
Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device. To use this device, contact your computer manufacturer to obtain a firmware or BIOS update. (Code 35)
This worked for me before (using the wizard to get the card working before I reinstalled win xp). I've also gone and updated my BIOS and I'm still having problems.
I've check to see if there were any IRQ conflicts through device manager and there are none but it showes that the Audigy card has the IRQ of 44.
I've also installed and reinstalled and tryied 'repair' of the drivers/software multiple times only to get nowhere and I've tried installing the driver updates off the site only to get messages saying that it can not find any sound cards installed.
    I have win xp sp2

After the sound card driver install I installed Norton Internet Security and other small programs (firefox, spampal, ect...)
    My computer is custom built:
    P4 2.4GHz
    Soyo P4X400 Dragon Ultra Platinum
    VIA Chipset
BIOS is by Award went from the 2AA6 to 2AA7 revision
    GB Ram
Windows XP SP2 installed on a 7GB partition
On board Audio is disable through the BIOS (have never used it since building the computer 2 years ago)
    Ati Radeon 9800 pro
    Ati HDTV Wonder
Drivers for both ATI cards where installed after the issue with the sound happend. Problem seemed to appear after Norton was installed.Message Edited by oobedoob on 09-2-2005 2:38 AM

  • Intel 915pm sound card can not work

My notebook PC's sound card is onboard 915pm (ICH6M), Audio codec is ALC880. When I use hwd, it can not find the sound card. Then I use alsaconf, it find snd-hda-intel. After I " modprobe snd-hda-intel", xmms can work with mp3 file, but there is no sound output from my speaker.
    Why ???

I have this sound card and I was able to get it to work with standard and archck kernels. But there are some bugs and sound sounds corrupted(it's fixed in 2.6.16). Compiling these modules in to the kernel helps a little. But you sould get it to work without any problems.

  • Sound card problem: static/crackling and no sound

I've had a late 2010 Macbook Air for over 3 years (February 2011). About a week or two ago I started hearing a strange popping noise every now and then while I was using headphones. I thought it was a problem with the headphones but then discovered the same thing when I used different external speakers. Almost simultaneously the internal speakers started periodically having no sound at all, even though it wasn't on mute. This was previously fixed by restarting the computer, but now the problem is permanent. The popping noise when using headphones has also rapidly worsened, and now crackles constantly and sometimes there is even very loud white noise. This occurs with any program on my computer - web browsers, spotify, itunes etc. As it's over three years old, I no longer have AppleCare. I'm not too keen on taking it into the Genius Bar unless I have some idea of how much it will cost beforehand, as I also need to replace my battery soon, which is going to be 129 euros. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, and if not, how much does it usually cost to replace the sound card? I'm using Mavericks but the problem started some time after I installed it.
After doing some googling to try to fix it I've tried:
    - Turning it off and on again
    - Installing AntiPop
    - PRAM reset
    - SMC reset
    - Disabling and reinstalling Adobe on google chrome
    - Resetting the sound card with terminal

Thanks Linc Davis. I thought I'd have to pay for the consultation at the Genius Bar, but you're quite right, it is free and you can decide not to go ahead if the quote they give is too much. Just thought I'd write what happened in case anyone else has the same problem. The cause was basically a small cable that needed to be repaired, which cost about 76 euros. I took it to an Apple Store in Paris and they fixed it within 24 hours, even though they estimated 3-5 days. He said another reason this problem might be occurring is because the Logic Board needs to be replaced which would have cost around 360 euros (probably not worth the money for a 3.5 year old laptop), but thankfully it was just the cable.
