How can I add this? You've left out a few details. Is this Solaris x86? Do you mean your Solaris partition is 20G, or that one slice (visible in format) is 20G?
You might be able to enlarge the partition to get the remaining space, but I don't know how you'd get the VTOC label inside to see the extra space.
You can only have one Solaris partition on the disk, so adding a second won't help.

  • Adding Partitions on Solaris 10

I was hoping somebody could help me find out how I can add two new files systems on different slices ( I guess) called Disk1 and Disk2. We meant to do this when we fisrt set the system up but we forgot.
    When I do the format command I get 0. c1t0d0 and 1. c1t1d0
Again, we want to have a file system on each one named Disk1 and Disk2. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Example of another system we have:
    swap 22195472 552 22194920 1% /tmp
    swap 22194968 48 22194920 1% /var/run
    /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s7 70589121 3799651 66083579 6% /disk2
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s4 20143489 16083778 3858277 81% /disk1
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s5 5045478 6868 4988156 1% /opt
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s7 5045478 3727197 1267827 75% /export/home
    G. M

    1.start format
2.select the disk you want the partition on by entering its number (0 or 1)
3.type partition to navigate into the partition setup
4.type print to see the current partition table
5.if there is any unallocated space create the partition by typing its number (0 - 7) and provide the requested information, i.e. starting cyl, size, etc.
    6. when you are done, save the partition table via label
7.now you can use newfs(1M) to create a filesystem on that partition.
an alternative would be to use zfs(1M), see the 'Howto' on the Sun web site.

I have installed Partion manager and I change Active partition to Solaris 10, Know the system Statup always by Solaris 10. Please tell me how I change active partition in Solaris (to set Windows XP active partition again ). Could I use fdisk ? and how?

1.Change the bios settings to boot from CD
    2. Insert the Solaris Software CD 1
    3. The procedures for installation starts , when it asks for the type of installation ie Interactive , jumpstart etc.
    4. At this prompt type " b cdrom -s "
    5. This will give you a root prompt
    6. mount the disk root partition onto a temp mount point on cd

  • How to create a separate /var partition on solaris non-global zone

    Hi
I found no simple way to create a separate /var partition in solaris non-global zone.
I am using solaris 10 u9 and my root pool is zfs. My zone's zonepath is also separate zfs fs.
But, I do not know how to make the /var as a mountpoint of another zfs dataset since /var is not empty.
I also do not know if there is a way to install a zone with /var as a separate (outside '/') partition.
    That will be really useful.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks
    Edited by: vadud3 on Sep 20, 2010 12:16 PM

I meant a separate zfs fs with mountpoint '/var' in a non-global zone.
I am insisting, because I do not want /var to fill up the '/' on non-global zone.
With default non-global zone installation, you cannot avoid that.
My zonepath itself is a zfs fs. I also have a zfs dataset provisioned to the non-global zone.
I cannot create a zfs fs out of that dataset and mount it as '/var' becasue by then non-global zone
    already installed content on '/var'
I want the '/var' as a separate dir or mountpoint, the same reason global zone gives you that option during install.

  • Expand a SAN partition under Solaris 10

    Hi!
I am using Solaris 10 hook up a SAN partition through SAN network. Now I want to expand the original SAN partition, with data on it, from 100GB to 200GB. We tried to expand it. On the SAN management side, it was expanded to 200GB. However, I am not able see and partition size change in Solaris 10.
Would you please kindly show me how to expand it properly without restoring data from backup?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
even though you expand the volume from the storage the partition table is still the same. You need to reflect the changes to the new head/sector/cylinder setting on the disk to see the new disk size.
Prior doing that take a backup copy of the existing partition table.
    # prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/cxtxdxs2
also if there are multiple partitions on the disks it is also dvisable to note down the start cylinder and the size in cylinders of each partition.
Then you have to unmount the volumes and relable it.
    format
    format> type
select "auto" to let format to select the new disk type and lable.
Once this is done you will see the new disk size. Create the existing partions using the saved partition information. You will find the added capacity towards the end of the previous cylinder boundry.
Note: During the capacity increase if there are changes to the heads or sectors of the disk then the "growfs" command will fail.

  • Creating a new partition in solaris 10

    hi all
i have dual operating systems - XP and solaris 10 on the same system and its on IDE harddisk
i have free space of 25 GB and i want to create partition in soalris
but that free its not showing and i have created a parttition in soalris using the free cylinders with type of solaris
now i am not able to mount that partition in the soalris
so if any body know how to use that free space to be used in the solaris
    thank you

Paragon NTFS will also create NTFS partitions.

  • Partition prevents solaris 10 installation

I am trying to install solaris 10 on a multi-boot system with Win XP and SuSE 9.2 Linux.
During the installation I get the
WARNING: A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a Linux fdisk partition on the same disk as a Solaris fdisk partition is not supported. ....
Then Solaris wants to overwrite the whole disk.
    My partitions are:
    1. primary partition NTFS with Win XP
    2. extended partition
    2a. NTFS
    2b. FAT-32
    2c. Linux swap
    3. primary partition reiserfs with SuSE 9.2
    4. free for Solaris
Would it help to use ext3 instead of reiserfs?
    Thanks fo any suggestions!
    Jean

    Hi troterbatti,
did you get your problem solved? My multiboot box looks
like yours (more or less). I've got the same error message.
Playing around brought me to the panel where I could
'fdisk' the disk. Done. But the final panel told me that the
Solaris install intends to delete the other partitions :(
    So I gave up ...
Any hint how to proceed or workaround?

  • Adding partition in free space on internal drive

So, when I bought my 20" Intel iMac, I immediately repartitioned the drive, and created one 200GB main partition for OSX and left ~32GB of free space for a future WinXP partition (which as of today became useful .
However, I cannot find any way to add a partition in the free space without trying some commercial tool (like iPartition). Disk Utility only has the option to repartition -- in OSX it won't let me because it's the system drive, and from the install CD it wants to nuke my whole drive to repartition, even though I don't need to touch the OSX partition at all. I've also dug through diskutil, pdisk, and fdisk, but none of those have an option to add a partition.
It seems totally stupid that I can't just create a partition in free space without killing the whole disk. I have 80GB of stuff on this drive I can't easily backup.
    Any ideas???
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The second partition is not for backups... it's for a FAT filesystem for installing Windows so that I can run my research software and play games at native speed.
Installing XP does not involve any firmware changes at all. The EFI bootloader is a blessed file that sits on the HFS partition, and the boot sector of the XP install CD is modified to talk to the custom EFI bootloader.
I actuallly did solve the problem through some brute force after my post. There is a command-line utility built into OSX now called 'gpt' which can edit GUID Partition Tables as used on Intel Macs. I booted off my OSX install CD, went to a terminal, unmounted /dev/disk0, added the new partition (gpt luckily does have an option for adding and removing partition entries without repartitioning the whole disk... Apple really needs to update Disk Utility if you ask me -- this is a common and simple task usually), then rebooted. It all worked fine!

  • Expanding root partition in Solaris 10 VirtualBox virtual machine

I am running a Solaris 10 u8 x86 64-bit guest as a VirtualBox VM on a WinXP x64 host. I was running out of space in the guest VM, so I used CloneVDI (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22422) to clone and expand the VM from 20GB to 30GB. Now I need to expand the / partition in the VM filesystem so that it sees the whole 30GB now available. What is the best way to do this within the Sol10 guest? Is there a way to simply add a new "extent" to the existing filesystem?
    Thank you in advance...

    * 2717 cylinders
    * 2715 accessible cylinders*And here's the problem. The OS didn't care. This VTOC shows only ~20GB
    16065 x 2717 / 2 / 1024 / 1024 => 20.81
The only way to change this is to blow it away and recreate it and hope your data survives. If you do it right it should, but you need to be prepared for it to not work.
You'd boot from alternate media (CD/DVD/network), then use 'fdisk' on the root drive. It'll have a 20GB Solaris partition on it. Destroy it and create a new one that is full size (40G).
Now run 'prtvtoc' on the drive again. If the number of sectors per cylinder is the same (just the number of cylinders increased), then you should be okay and able to continue. If the size of a cylinder changed, then your data will probably not be accessible.
Now take your original 'prtvtoc' output file and remove the line with slice 2 in it

    9 9 01 16065 32130 48194Use 'fmthard' to reapply the slices.
    # fmthard -s <vtocfile> /dev/rdsk/c0d0s2Check the disk and all the slices should be back.
Verify root filesystem is still present and okay
    # fsck -n /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0If all that is done, then you're really close. Since the root slice is at the end of the disk, increasing the size is simple. Just go into 'format -> partition' and edit slice 0. Keep the start cylinder the same, but change the number of cylinders to use the rest of the disk. When done type 'label' and exit format. If done correctly you can now run 'growfs /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0' to increase the size. Reboot and everything should come up.
The worst part is that when you increase the Solaris partition, I don't believe there's a guarantee that the cylinder size won't change. When I've attempted this, I haven't had any problems, but I've always been ready if it didn't work. When it works, it does save time.
    Good luck!

Now my question is where i see this partition i have use the mount command but it does not work showing the below message.
mount: /dev/dsk/c3d0p5 is not this fstype
Kindly guide me how i can make this partition in my use.
    Thanks

I'm going to presume your disk is physically inside the computer.
(You didn't describe the system, nor where that drive was. In fact, you gave no usable hardware information.)
If you have ANYTHING in the computer that you would find painful to lose, such as another OS ...
If you have never installed Solaris before ...
... get a new disk drive and have that be the only disk in the computer.
Yes, that means actually spending money, but you will be happier with the results.
The Solaris installation process wil see your disk (or disks if you have more than one) and it will ask you where you want to install the OS. You will be presented with a number of opportunities to customize your choices. Solaris does not need third party utilities to prepare the hardware. So long as your components are known to be compatible, it wil "just work".
---> Just leave the space unconfigured. Let the installation process take care of it.
    Learn by installing the OS.
Then re-install it immediately again with different defaults.
Then re-install it again, with yet a different set of settings.
Don't try to get fancy with multi-boot or alternate-boot lash-ups.
Keep everything simple and you will become competent at this.

  • Partitioning in Solaris 10

I have a SUN v240 server that has been installed and partitioned. I installed both disks under the system with little available free space left. One disk with 70 gigs dedicated to system and one dedicated to /usr and some home dir's. I was informed afterwards that I need a large Oracle partition dedicated to Oracle for spatial. Is there any way to partition "on the fly" with Solaris 10 so that the system remains in tact and I have 25 gigs of free space to set up a partition for Oracle?

Yes what your looking for is "soft partitions". By using soft partitions you can create and grow filesystems on the fly if space is available. Check out chapters 12 and 13 of the Solaris Volume Manager Administration Guide (link is below).

I want to install Solaris in unallocated space. when I try to install solaris 10. It shows only two partition 40 gb and 150 gb. I am new to Solaris.. please help.

hello, you don't have to use hme0, that may not be your NIC type. your NIC appears to be realtek adapter. download the drivers first [try here: http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/rf-1.0.9.tar.gz] install them, then your NIC will have a name like rt0. you can then proceed to set its interface.i hope ifconfig -a, blah, blah is ok with u. If the adapter is ok then you can now do the zones - they are just automatic no strugling!
you can also find the drivers from realtek website at -- ftp://152.104.238.194/cn/nic/rtl8139abcd8130810xseries/rtls211.zip
here are sample instructions on how to install the driver
    How to install Solaris/x86 version
    1. This is the version 2.1.1 RTL8139 serials driver for Solaris/x86
    version.
    2. It support Speed/Duplex-Force mode, you can set it through rtls.conf file.
    3. It supports 3 PCI-VID_DID cards, VID_10EC_DID_8139 for Realtek's
native, VID_1113_DID_1211 for Accton and VID_1186_DID_1301 for
    D-Link in the install script.
    4. Install method:
    a. Power-off your PC and insert your RTL8139 adapter.
    b. Boot-up you Solaris/x86 and login as "root".
    c. Copy the "rtls211.zip" into the temporary location in your
    hard-driver.
    d. UNZIP the "rtls211.zip" and you will get 3 files, "rtls", "rtls.conf" and
    "Install".
    e. If the PCI ID for your RTL8139 adapter is not VID_10EC_DID_8139
or VID_1113_DID_1211 or VID_1186_DID_1301, you can modify the
"Install" file to match your PCI ID, VID_ABCD_DID_WXYZ for example,
    modify the "pci1186,1301" to "pciABCD,WXYZ".
    f. Run the "Install" from File Manager to install the driver, and
it will modify 2 files, "/etc/name_to_major" and "/etc/driver_aliases"
    g. You need to create the "/etc/hostname.rtls0" file and modify some
other related files to make your networking environments working well.
    h. You can execute "touch /reconfigure" then "shutdown -i5 -g0", so that
Solaris will reboot and scan changed hardware environment.
    i. You can execute "ifconfig -a" to make sure the RTL8139 driver is up.
    success. bye

  • How to search and mount partitions in solaris

    Hi
I am new to Oracle solaris. I have a dual boot of windows S03 and solaris. I want to install Open Office which I downloaded and copied to D drive when I was in windows. Now how do I navigate to the D drive in solaris. When I select Places/Computer, I see CD drive and a folder named File System . I don't see any other drives.
I would like to know what is the GUI option to navigate to the drives. I remember, Ubuntu and Fedora do show the drives. Please help me
    Regards
    Srinivas

Do you know if the Windows partition is NTFS or Fat32? If it's NTFS the only way you can see it is with additional third party software. If it's FAT32 or some type of FAT partition then you can mount it first and then it will show up under the GUI.
The easiest way to do it would be to burn it to dvd or copy it to usb and then use:
    sudo /path/setup to install OO.
