Adding printer NEW AP extreme utility.app

I want to add a printer that is connect directly to my PC and has a wifi connection, too.  My mac has always used the wifi to print, and with an old Netgear it worked fine.  Now with a brand new AP extreme (2015) it doesn't.  The utility app doesn't allow me to choose such a peripheral.  Plus it doesn't look like what other people have from last December even.  Help!
Thanks.

My mac has always used the wifi to print, and with an old Netgear it worked fine.
Were you printing via the Windows PC shared printer (wifi is then merely used for network and the share happens from the PC) or was the printer also wifi connected to the router?
In the new setup with the AE printer should be wifi connected directly to the router. The method of doing that is in the main menu area.. ie up the top.. not in the boxes of the AE itself.
So go to the main top menu.. but if you use Yosemite it looks different.
Change from Pin to First attempt and the Printer will then be network connected to the AE.
Once you do that.. remove the existing setup completely in the Mac and start over.. adding the printer that is now wifi connected to the AE.

  • Adding a new Airport Extreme to existing network?

Hi, I just bought an Airport Extreme, which I want to use in my apartment to replace my existing Airport Express (802.11g) network.  Is there an easy way to do this without having to reset all my devices that use the network?
I have a TV, receiver, Blu ray player, two laptops, two iPhones and an iPad, all of which would need to be reconfigured if I just scrap the existing network in favor of the new device's new network.  (And it's really annoying to set up the network on the home theater stuff!)
Am I just being lazy, and I should just start a new network from scratch?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Whenever replacing network equipment, it is always a good idea to start from scratch. What you may save during the initial setup may be lost with the time you will spend hunting down why things are not quite working right later.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX) from the Internet broadband modem.
(OPTIONAL) While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Connect the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), using the same Ethernet cable that was used for the AX. Make sure to connect the cable to the AEBSn's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Temporarily connect your Mac Pro to one of the available LAN (opposing arrows) ports on the AEBSn. Of course, if you intend on leaving the Mac Pro connected by Ethernet, then just leave the Ethernet connection as is after the setup is complete.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AEBSn's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AEBSn will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Can I add a WiFi printer through WPS with the new AirPort Extreme and AirPort Utility 6.3?

It says here that AirPort Utility 6.2 supports WPS-capable WiFi printers, but on the new AirPort Extreme techs pecs Apple insists that the way printing is shared is by connecting the printer to the AirPort Extreme with a USB cable, which really defeats the whole purpose of WiFi printing doesn't it?
Does the new Airport Extreme support WPS-capable printing? Does AirPort Utility 6.3 support it?

Does the new Airport Extreme support WPS-capable printing?

  • Added a new printer; other printers in Printer Utility list dissappeared

Ok, i did something unconscious. Added a new printer (Canon MP160) to a list of many while the Printer Setup Utility was open. No harm i figured, when i rebooted 4 printers from my list were gone. Found them in Users> Library> Printers. Any way to simply drag & drop them back to the list? I don't seem to be able to add tyhem....
Thanks for offering any insight or solutions.
    Peace
    15" MacBook Pro C2D 2.33/120/3g;   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Pismo G4/550;SuperDrive;DLink BT;1GB RAM

Because the printers are still showing in Users/Library/Printers then that shows that they are still installed on your Mac. So it is possible that as the Printer Setup Utility was open it may have caused your current problem, although from what I remember most of the Canon installers I've run close all open application before installing? Anyway, if another restart doesn't get them back into view then it could be that the printers.conf file (a hidden file located in etc/cups) has not updated correctly. Open Safari and type "http://127.0.0.1:631/printers". You should see all the printers currently installed and if this file is 'damaged' then you may only see the MP160.
Of course, it may be a lot simpler than this. It could be due to the View menu in the Printer Setup Utility. Select View > Columns and enable 'In Menu'. If there is no tick next to the other printers then that can be one reason.
Also, if the other printers are not currently connected to the Mac you are using, then that can also stop the printers from being displayed. Also, if they are shared printers and the Mac sharing them is off/sleep, then that can stop them from appearing also.

  • Why won't my new Airport Extreme recognize my USB Hard drive?  My MacBook recognizes it.  I already have had a great deal of trouble connecting my printer to print wirelessly, but finally resolved that.  Now I want to add the external drive with a USB por

Why won't my new Airport Extreme recognize my USB external hard drive.  I put a USB port on the base station, and the system recognizes my printer.  When I click on disks - it lists my printer, and when I click on Printers it lists my printer.  What do I need to do to get it to recognize the external drive?  BTW, the MacBook recognizes it, no problem.  I have erased it and reformatted it.  I am running the new Lion OS.  Any help is appreciated.

Yes, I saw a post on one of these threads about a powered USB hub so I ran over to Office Depot and picked one up.  I was finally able to see the HD in the Airport Utility.  Yay!

  • Airport Extreme security concern with Airport Utility App

Just bought the new Airport Extreme (802.11ac) last night. BY FAR the easiest wireless setup I have ever done (< 5 minutes).  Hats off to the Apple developers on this one - they crushed it!  One of the things that makes this device so easy to setup though is the iPad/iPhone Airport Utility app.  I used the iPad version.
My concern - When I startup this app it goes straight to the main config screen.  Just tap on the Airport Extreme image, then tap Edit and I'm into my wireless settings (id's, passwords, etc.).  And that's my concern.  It didn't ask me for any kind of password to get into the utility, or the settings.  What's to stop someone else from using my iPad to get into the wireless settings, or from someone else installing the app on their iPad and getting into my wireless settings.
It feels like this is a huge security hole.  Am I missing something?
    Thanks in advance - MarkInColo

Is there a way to lock down the app on my iPad so that the settings can't be accessed unless I authorize it?
    No
Only way I can think of is uninstall the app, and install it again only when I need it.  Isn't there a better way?
If it were me, I would not install or use AirPort Utility for the iPad, iPhone etc.  Use only AirPort Utility on your Mac, and do not enable the option to have KeyChain Access remember the password.
Then, anyone who wants to access the settings in AirPort Utility on the Mac will have to enter the Base Station password to be able to make any changes in AirPort Utility.

  • I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Adding two Airport Express to New Ariport Extreme - need help with settings

First, I have a brand new Airport Extreme (square N one) that is up and working just fine. The SSID is "Unstable Network". Under the Wireless tab...The Wireless mode is currently: "Create a Wireless Network". The "Allow this network to be Extended" box is not checked. Radio Mode is "Automatic". Radio Channel Selection is set to "Automatic". What do these need to be changed to?
2nd: I have an older Aiport Express that I used to use for itunes and a receiver. I want to add this to my Airport Extreme Network to extend the wireless network to the basement and stream itunes to my remote receiver. I can see this Airport Express using Airport Utility. The SSID of this Airport Express is "Unstable Network Extender". Under the wireless tab....Wireless mode is set to "Join a Wireless Network" The network it is assigned to is my Airport Extreme SSID "Unstable Network". It shows up as IP address 10.0.1.6. What should these setting be to both extend the network and allow itunes to stream?
3rd: I have a second Airport Express that I would like to plug in at a remote end of my house on the second floor to extend my network even further. It is currently hardwired and I can see it in Airport Utility. The SSID is "Unstable Network Extender 2". The setting are the same as the other Airport Express. It shows up as IP address 10.0.1.13. What should they be to extend the network.
Thank you in advance to anyone that can clearly spell out what my setting should be. I am non-technical for the most part, but was technical enough to set up my Airport Extreme but can't figure out how to extend everything.

Since you will have a mix (802.11g/802.11n) AirPorts, and that you want to "daisy" chain the two AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) to extend the wireless network, you will need to configure the three of them for a static Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
Here are the basic steps to do so:
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. In this case, I suggest that you temporarily connect both AXs to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs (MAC addresses) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS. The AirPort ID and is printed on the label on the bottom/side of the base station.) Finally, I strongly suggest that you perform a "hard" reset on the AEBSn and "factory default" resets on the AXs to get them back to their original "out-of-the-box" configurations before you start.)
    For reference in this setup:
o AEBSn = main base station
    o AX#1 = relay base station
    o AX#2 = remote base station
Main Base Station Setup - AEBSn
o On the Mac click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by AEBSn.
o Open AirPort Utility (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the AEBSn, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then, choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. (Note: You may have to hold down the <Option> key before making this selection to get the WDS option.)
o Click WDS, and then, choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the relay base station - AX#1.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Relay Base Station Setup - AX#1
o In the AirPort Utility select AX#1, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the AEBSn from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS relay” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the AEBSn in the Main AirPort ID field.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of AX#2.
o Click Update to transfer the new WDS settings to the relay and remote base stations.
Remote Base Station Setup - AX#2
o In the AirPort Utility select AX#2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the AEBSn from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the AEBSn in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

  • Brand new airport extreme not found on utility on iPad

I Just purchased the AirPort Extreme.  My first Apple router but all of our devices are apple products with the exception of our pc.  Extreme is flashing Amber light and is not found in the airport utility app.  I want to enjoy this apple product as much as the others but it's becoming difficul.

OK, thanks for clarifying that for me.
If you have the Setup Guide handy that came with your AirPort Extreme,  please head for page 12 and locate the heading to......
Setting Up AirPort Extreme Using an iOS Device.........To Set It Up
The steps here are pretty clear, and we rarely get a question about this but, we'll go through this in case you might have missed something.
    1. Tap Settings on the iPad home screen.  Settings is the gear looking icon there.  Then, tap WiFi.  WiFi is on the left side of the screen.
    2. Tap the name of the AirPort Extreme. AirPort Extreme is located just under the heading of SET UP NEW AIRPORT BASE STATION there.
In the example below from an iPhone screen, I am setting up a new AirPort Express.  So, I would tap on AirPort Express.  You will see AirPort Extreme on your iPad screen, so you would tap on AirPort Extreme.
When you do this, that will start up the setup wizard.
    3. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a new network or extend an existing network.  The setup wizard will analyze the network and suggest the correct setup for you.
Once the AirPort Extreme has been set up, then you can use AirPort Utility to edit or modify any of the settings that you might need to adjust.

Printopia is another option but be aware that since these solutions effectively act as a print server and AirPrint receiver, they require a computer to be running on the same WiFi network.
Canon also has a couple of apps in the App Store that might facilitate this on non-AirPrint printers. Check out...

  • I lost the lan ethernet connection of an older windows 7 pc to my 3 Terabyte router when adding a new local printer to the pc. How do i set this up again so the PC is recognized and can get to the internet again through the time capsule?

I recently added a new printer to a 2005 vintage PC that is running windows 7. It used to go through a router in my wifes upstairs office to the time capsule by wired ethernet (cat5) but when I added her new local printer thought I would network it, big mistaked, lost all my ethernet connection and she cannot get to the internet. Wireless not an option. How do i set up again the ethernet connection and i will only USB the printer locally this time for the windows pc?
Tried windows diagnostics, and besides telling me to reset everything and turn router off and on etc. I am in an endless loop.
Other Mac products are not impacted by this issue.

I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour.

  • On the new airport extreme how do you set up a print thats plugged in  to the base station to work on all computer

I pluged in a printer to my new airport extreme and need to set it up so other computers can see it

Plugged is very unspecific.. ethernet and USB are possible and completely and totally different.
If you need help.. we need to know what the printer is.. and using what connection.
Did you read the apple setup guides.
