Adding RAM over 2GB - will it help performance? (WinXP)

Hey guys,
I have LR running on a Dual Core AMD Windows XPpro machine with 2GB ram.
When I built the machine last year, I was advised that 2GB was all that XP and CS2 could utilise and that there was no point getting more.
Does this hold true for LR. Would it make any difference if I was to add a couple of gig of RAM??

Adding 2GB more (4 GB total) can help, especially if you use the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file. At least photoshop can use up to what's left between ~3GB and what the operating system takes of ~3GB (in my machine PS allows me to set up to ~2.7 GB for PS only).
But the memory between ~3GB and 4GB can only be used by some device drivers atc, so XP will only show something like ~3.2GB RAM, so some of those 4GB is wasted.
But I'm certainly much happier with 4GB than I was with 2GB, much less swapping/waiting these days!
BTW, 64 bit operating systems don't seem to change this situation, you have to have more than 4GB... for example Vista-64 also shows ~3.2 GB RAM on a 4GB machine

Recieved a new 512 ddr Ram stick for Christmas. I already have a 512 ddr stick that has been working for over a year.
Did MSI Live update.
In Bios I set to optimal defaults or (non-High performance defaults.)
set SDRAM 1T to diable
Put DDR Voltage to 2.7
Installed DDR 512 Ram Booted up.
Computer gets to desktop then reboots.
What other settings do I need. PLEASE HELP! MSI never calls back!
Tried clocking FSB to 133 - crashed sooner to a Blue screen with that setting.

Running XP with both Ram sticks the same, 512 DDR Kingston. They are identical as recommended. I am ready to send the Ram back and I am very disappointed in the motherboard.

My iMac 1.8 GHz G5 is about two years old and starting to run slowly. Could it be the 10,000 photos and 6,000 songs? I've started using my MacBook for most work and my iMac for most play (i.e. media).

Yes, adding more memory can make a huge performance improvement.
I've owned two iMac G5 systems. And, in both cases, I noticed a huge performance improvement jumping to 1 GB of RAM. And, while not huge, I noticed even better performance going from 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM.
512 MB is minimal, and adequate. But, more memory makes OS X run considerably better.

Does adding RAM help solve iMovie4 jerky playback

I have been reading threads about jerky playback in iMovie4 in large projects, after adding music from iTunes etc. My wife has a monster project and playback during editing has became very eratic. I have emptied cache, repaired the hard drive, repaired permissions etc. I have not tossed iMovie preferences. I have 23 gigs of space on the HD and a 250gig external FW HD that I bought after she started the project on the internal HD. I would like to know from you experts: 1. Would it help to move the project to the larger external HD? 2. Would adding RAM help (currently iMac G5 1.8mhz with 768 megs RAM)? 3. Is there any way to tell if the project will export to iDVD smoothly if it continues to look terrible in iMovie playback? I hate to go through a few hours of rendering for nothing. Thanks so much for your help. I always find good and useful info in discussions.

Michael, there are some very useful applications that I highly recommend to keep your Mac running smoothly. As a defragmenter I use Allsoft's Disk Warrior that also has a very good directory repair feature. Check out also Drive Genius that has a host of useful features. Also get iMovie file fixers, invaluable tool that is free that will allow iMovie to import certain files in audio and photo formats that are greyed out and also has other features. I believe I got mine from Mr. Lennart Thelander in previous posts here. Cache Out is an excellent application to clear out cache files. I also advise you do a regular permission repair from Disk Utility in your Utilities folder that is on your Mac. These are basically my must have applications. As for copying your iMovie project to your external, just drag your entire project folder ( the blue one with the media and star folder(s) in it directly in the external hard drive. I find that iMovie is one application that requires a clean (defragmented) drive with ample space to spare. I defrag my drives if I trash files often from them, or if I notice erratic and jerky performance or slowness in response. I hope that some of my suggestions will help your in your editing.

Will not boot after adding RAM?

I just added another 512mb chip to my PB G4 upper slot. After adding the RAM, my PB will not boot/ load the OS. When I press the power button, the HD (i think) begins to run, but stops after about 2 seconds. I can't get it to do anything else. Please help.

Have you taken the new RAM stick out yet?
Powerbooks can pretty picky when it comes to RAM.

I have a 667MHz Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM. It's getting really slow lately, especially after installing MacOS 10.4 and Adobe CS2.
I tried not to open too many programs at a time, but it doesn't seem to help much.
Does anybody have the same problem with the newer Powerbook or Macbook Pro? I'm wondering if I need a new laptop, or just an extra RAM.

Although adding RAM may increase speed a little running some routine system maintenance will certainly speed up things much more radically: MacOS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

IMac 5,2 getting it over 2GB of Ram I think I'm close

Ok, so this is been quite a project I've been completely determined to get my iMac 5,2 over 2GB of Ram so far what I've done is
-Disable SMBios (which has done ALOT of good things the most noticable is the improvement in the Intel GMA 950 it allows alot of updated intel kexts to run and I can tell it's removed the boot-arg "maxmememory=2017" in Lion when you load the system profile when you get to the about this mac in the system profiler it says 2?? and when you click on memory it says that there's no user installable memory which isn't the case but the initial software limiter is removed the only thing I can really think thats stopping it is the Model Indentifer "5, 2" my guess is one of the various efi frameworks is still blocking it with the indentifier I've tried flashing the rom a couple of different ways but have been unsuccessful initial I tried to the downgrade it to a 4, 1 then I was going to take it to a 5, 1 but thats cleary not going to work so now i'm thinking of using a Mac Mini indentifer I think it's the 2, 1 has nearly an intetical motherboard plus the intel GMA 950 but my recent attempts have not been successful I dunno it's a little frustating I was so sure it was gonna boot when I block the SMBIos but it did I thought that was gonna for sure do it so any ideas? I'm not worried about bricking this system the EFI is superisly resilient boot I can reflash it if some does go wrong so if you got any crazy ideas I'll try it if seems resonable.

From the little I understand, what you are trying to do is to fool the hardware and from previous posts here, it's been tried before. Result: it won't work. Even if you were able to put in another graphics card (not possible) and a logic board and a processor, the result would be the same: it will not work.
Your model can go to 2 GB RAM. If you do that, you can run Lion, but it won't run well with it (if that is your ultimate aim), as both Lion and ML are memory hogs and 2 GB just won't cut it.

Having problems with Verizon iPhone 5 using excessive data. Verizon will not help can anyone give me advice? Have family plan never went over 8gb of data in 6 years, now avg 14 a month and are not using anything different other than having iPhone 5.

Switched to iPhone 5 on July 31st. Since then our data usage has doubled. Verizon will not help find out what the problem could be, they claim they are unaware of a problem. I told them to look on the customer support page and many have complained about the problem. Now on the apple site I see it may be an apple problem. Some one needs to fix this. Apple you want us to use your products, please do t make it cost us more money just to do what we did prior without problems. Prior phones were iPhone 4 and we never had issues and never went over 8 gb's for 4 phones. Now we are doing 14. Can anyone tell me what is going on. Well you could Restore it from your backup and see if that helps. If it doesn't Restore it as new and manually add things back until the problem starts again.
I would also suggest trying a different SIM.
Without iOS 7 there is no way to isolate what is using the data.

It seems that year long delay from having your lock button repaired has finally caught up to you. Sounds like you have some damage to your phone that requires repair/replacement. Take it to a Apple store or contact Apple Tech Support.

Try launching the editor and entering your serial number there if asked.

I have found that my Mac Book Pro 15 inch late 2011 is slower than my PC Windows 7 for certain downloads, and working with iPhoto. Would adding RAM be helpful in speeding up this process. Currently I have the stock 4GB RAM, and storage 500GB HD drive.

The save process stops with cannot exceed 2GB limit.
MY QUESTION is:
Why is my .psd file going from 150MB to over 2GB .pdf (Preserve Ps Editing capabilities is unchecked)?
How should save this document as a PDF so the fonts print vector sharp through a RIP (banner poster), I don't want to outline them?
I've never seen this before and am stumped...

it exported at around 135MB in about 10 seconds -- just what i would have expected -- not the gigabytes and minutes and Ps was taking before it erred

Network render engine with projects over 2gb?

I recently set up a network render farm using Adobe CS4 and adobe's render engine. I have no problem collecting my files over my network using the renderfarm for projects with resource files and project files smaller than 2 GB. However, working with HD footage, my resource files are usually significantly larger than this. When ever I try to collect my files over the network to my watchfolder in projects over 2GB AE always fails. Adobe clearly states this issue in there not so helpful, help guide:

"After Effects can’t copy source files that are largerthan 2 GB using the Collect Files command: you must copy them manuallyto the (Footage) folder in the Collect Files folder."
I'm sure this is a simple issue that simply requires someone who has actually set up a network renderfarm (adobe technical support was very helpful in taking my money and reading to me this line from the manual) The problem is this vague line does not describe how to build the corresponding folder structures in your watch folder. I've tried mimicking the folder structures that AE generated on my watch folder with projects less then 2GB but have had no success. I feel like, and this is just me speculating, but there has to be some file brought to the watch folder, along with the resource files that triggers my watch folder into action. I guess to summarize, how do I use my CS4 network renderfarm for projects with resource files over 2GB. Any suggestions would seriously brighten my boss's day (& since I pushed so hard for this render farm and indirectly brighten mine)

Thank you so much for your help, we are now rendering files larger then 2gb and without copying the files and duplicating them on our network drives. Could you also give us a hand with trying to optimize our render farm machines so that they will render as quickly as possible. We have two machines dedicated to rendering that have 4GB of ram and 2.53 ghz xeon processors that are showing 8 cpus in the task manager of the machines. When we are rendering only 4 of the CPUs show activity and we are unsure what setting in the preferences of our render engines below would be the absolute best for rendering speed, and to get those other 4 cpus to kick in. thank you in advance.

I think as drive capacities increase, the old 10-15% becomes less accurate. The amount of free space you need doesn't really have anything to do with the drive size. So, increasing your drive size shouldn't mean that you need to have more free GB (which using a % of drive space would mean). You need free space to accommodate page outs (the amount of which would depend on how much RAM you have installed and how memory intensive the applications are), sleep images (again, this would max out at your total amount of RAM), and a bit to minimize fragmentation.
With desktop drives commonly in the 2TB range today, it is certainly not necessary to have 200GB+ free in order to maintain proper operation. I generally find about 30GB to be the minimum I'm comfortable with. Mind you, I pretty much always have way more than that available. But, if I'm working on a system and the amount of free space is at least 30GB, I would generally not site drive space as the cause of any performance issues. I'd say that 30GB is a minimum for a stable system (with 8GB or RAM installed). Of course at that amount, you would still need to free up space if you were to want to install or download any significant amount of data.
With servers being more likely to run into the 16GB of RAM range, more storage would be necessary. Most servers should be well stocked with storage, but the actual needs would vary greatly depending on what's being "served".
The 10-15% thing came about when we used to talk about drive capacities in hundreds of MBs and RAM in terms of KB (not MB and certainly not GB). More drive space is always a good thing, but as drive capacities continue to sky rocket, we don't need to dedicate larger amounts of storage on systems with the same specifications. A set amount of space is required for proper operation regardless of the capacity of the drive installed.
