Adding routes not on the Global Zone

Is it possible to add a route to a non global zone? if not, is there a way to manipulate the route coming from non global zone?

I don't think so. There's only one kernel and only one routing table. There might be some workarounds though.
Can you describe a little more of what you're trying to do? It might be possible to think up some workarounds. For instance, ipnat might be able to do useful rewrites.

  • Adding pictures to a theme, but not in the drop zones...

I don't know if this is a really noob ou really tricky question, but here it goes : )
I'd like to add a/some picture(s) to a iDVD theme, but not in the drop zones. I'd like my pictures to appear as layers, choose whoch one goes in front, and so on...
Is there any way to do that?
Thx, and happy new year ; )
    iMac 24' 2,16GHz CodeDuo2 GeForce 7300 GT 1Gh DDR   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In that case you would need to prepare the background as a QT movie exactly the way you want to display it as a background movie and then drag and drop that prepared QT file to iDVD.
I've never done this type of movie in iLife apps alone but I have with FCP & DVD SP which offers these additional video editing options for sizing pip and frames in an existing movie / menu.
Also check the help Menu for iDVD6 (and iMovie) if you haven't already. I did a search for you and here's what I came up with:
Changing the background image of a DVD menu
You can replace the background image in a menu with your own image. Images in menu backgrounds are cropped to fit the standard DVD window size, but the aspect ratio of the original image is preserved. If you want your image to fit the DVD window exactly, first use an image-editing application to resize the image to 640 x 480 for standard video and 854 x 480 for widescreen.
When you replace a background image, you can also choose to keep the drop zones or remove them completely.
Here are ways to change the background image:
Drag a picture file from the Finder or the Media pane to a DVD menu background, outside a drop zone. Before you drop the picture, press the Command key and choose "Replace background" or "Replace background and drop zones" from the contextual menu that appears (shown above). Then release the mouse button.
Click the Menu button and drag a picture file from the Finder to the background well in the Menu pane. If your theme has drop zones, the drop zones disappear.
Click the Media button, then click Photos. Drag a photo from your iPhoto library or another folder to your DVD menu. If your theme has drop zones, the drop zones are retained.
Choose File > Import > Image, locate and select an image, and click Import. If your theme has drop zones, the drop zones are retained.
To remove a background image and return to the default image for the theme, click the Menu button and drag the image out of the background well (shown above).
    Hope this answers your question/s.

  • Why is Ical not converting the time zones on email invites?  This is a big problem where my work is global.

Why is my Ical not converting the time zones on email invites?  this has happend twice this week where someone has sent me an evite and it post improperly on the calendar.

My original post stated that I was having performance problems and the whole point of the post was to find out if there is a way of exporting the information out of Thunderbird and importing into a new profile. Nothing has changed. I was not looking for the standard methods of managing profiles, which are well documented on the web.
Thunderbird appears to make use of a number of sqlite databases. My post was to see if there is anyone on the forum with sufficient knowledge about the database structure/usage to show me how to get the information out and import it to new databases. It is my view that some database corruption has taken place that is causing my performance problems. So, I wanted to get the data out of the databases, edit it as necessary, and get it back into new databases. I was hoping that the Thunderbird developers, or a third party, had a tool to help me with that.
I suspect that the corruption has occurred due to hard disk errors or an unexpected shutdown at some point. I could be completely wrong, but as I have said, I have ruled out the obvious things. Having created a new "blank" profile I know that the performance problems are related to my existing profile. The new profile/Thunderbird performed without issues.
If you have the expertise to show me how to do that then I would welcome your help. If you can show me that I am wrong in my assumptions then I would be interested to hear your views.
So, nothing at all has changed. I previously logged a bug report on RSS feeds and I only raised the RSS issue as an example of why I think the obvious things are not applicable. Many users may have issues relating to anti-virus/firewall type problems but as I said in my original post, I am quite technical. The point of saying that was to make it clear that I am not a novice user. I also did quite a lot of searching via Google to see if I could find a solution before posting on this forum.
So, nothing at all has changed from my original post.

  • How do you create a new local zone w/o all the global zone packages

I have serveral servers with hundreds of packages added w/o the pkgadd -G option. Everytime I create a new local zone, the local zone inherits all the global zone packages. Is there a way to modify maybe the packaging DB to stop the automatic inhertitance of packages to create new empty local zone ?
Edited by: cslew on Feb 4, 2008 8:02 PM

    Not really.
If we're talking about sparse zones, they share the root partition with the global zone anyway, so regardless of whether the packages were 'registered' with the zones, they would get the software anyway.
Of course, not registering the packages would speed up the patching process as it wouldnt have to futz around updating all the local package repositories.
So it would be an advantage in some respects.
If we're talking about a full root zone, then it ought to be possible in theory.
But I'm not aware of a way to do it in practice.

  • Oracle 10g install is not working on Global zone

We installed Solaris 10 (below) in a T2000 using the same standards we have for many other hosts. After the installation was finished, three zones were exported from a M5000 class machine and imported into this T2000. From inside the zones we can call the Oracle10g installer and the graphical screen is presented. When executing the installed from the Global zone, we can see a java process running, using 100% of a thread, but no graphical interface is presented at all. Checking truss, we see a lot of pollsys being called. Any ideas?

This pretty much says it all:
No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.What version of Vista?
What version of the agent? ... 10g is not a version number it is a marketing label
Did you check to see if the agent is compatible with your operating system?
My recommendation would be to get a real operating system: Either Oracle Linux or XP.

The one thing I have found in the documentation is that if you set the network as an exclusive IP, you can only assign the physical name using zonecfg. You can't set the IP address or the default router. In fact, if you try to set either of those, you get an error saying you can't set those using an exclusive IP type.Correct. When doing a shared-IP zone, the zone has no privileges to do IP-level things. So the global zone (via the zone configuration) creates the virtual interface and sets the IP address. Then when the zone is booted, the interface is given to it.
With an exclusive-IP zone, the zone can do all this work itself. From its perspective, it's handed an interface like a regular machine. So the IP settings are done within the zone (/etc/hosts, /etc/hostname.XXX, /etc/netmasks).

  • To break out of a non-global zone and become root user in the global zone

    Hi folks
"to break out of a non-global zone and become root user in the global zone through a kernel bug exploit"
Is this possible and has SUN allready a fix/workaround/patch for that?
    Cheers

Is it possible there's a bug in the kernel? Sure.
Someone would need to find and identify such a bug before it could be fixed. I've not heard of the discovery of a bug like this. You could check the bug database at www.opensolaris.org.

  • Not all non-global zones updated for DST

We have one server with Solaris 10 and four non-global zones. I installed patch 122032-03 to the global zone and it installed successfull, according to the log. With the DST change on 3/11, TWO of the non-global zones and the global zone updated correctly to daylight time, but the other TWO non-global zone DID NOT. Does anyone know what would cause this?
I have also tried to manually change the time on the two non-global zones and have not been able to; as root I get the message "not owner"

Fortunately, these were just test zones. They were set up by a previous admin to be used for pgpftp, so I'm wondering if there are some special configurations for security that is preventing the time change.

    Thanks for replying.
I rebooted from the global zone. All the zones have the same uptime as the global zone, except one that was rebooted more recently.
Quick question - how do I tell if it's a sparse zone or full zone?

  • FSS shares and the global zone

zonecfg allows me to set an RCTL on the number of FSS shares a zone can use.
How do I set the total number of FSS shares that are available to all the processes in the global zone.
For instance if I have a machine with the global zone and two non-global zones how do I configure the CPU shares so that all the zones get an equal amount of the CPU.
I can balence the two non-global zone equally but how do I balence the non-global zones against the global zone?

zonecfg allows me to set an RCTL on the number of FSS shares a zone can use.
How do I set the total number of FSS shares that are available to all the processes in the global zone. You can use the prctl(1M) utility for now, although you'll need to renew the setting each time you
reboot the system. In the future we hope to have a nicer user interface for this.
For instance if I have a machine with the global zone and two non-global zones how do I configure
the CPU shares so that all the zones get an equal amount of the CPU.Well, that one is easy-- give each zone one share. Then the machine will divide up 1/3, 1/3, 1/3.
Or, use prctl(1M) to give the global zone 2 shares; the machine will divide up 1/2, 1/4, 1/4.
    Does that help? Please note also that prctl has some problems with setting zone resource controls;
these are fixed in build 59, which should appear as Solaris 10, Beta5, in another month or so.
Anyway, the incantation which works for me is:
    prctl -n zone.cpu-shares -r -v 2 -i process 1
That means: "change zone.cpu-shares, replacing the current value with the new value, 2, and
apply the change to process 1 (init). This is slightly a hack-- and works because the zone.cpu-shares
resource control is shared across all processes in the given zone-- so I've chosen PID 1 as a "representative" of the global zone.
When the aforementioned bug is fixed in build 59, you will be able to instead say:
    prctl -n zone.cpu-shares -r -v 2 -i zone global
Which is a little more sensible.

  • Disabling the global zone ?

    Hi,
I wanted to remove/disable the global zone in Solaris 10. Someone told me that the only thing I needed to do is removing the following three packages:
    - SUNWluzone
    - SUNWzoner
    - SUNWzoneu
I've done it and it seems that there is no global zone, but I still wonder if it is a good method and what are the consequences of such behavior.
    Thank you for any response.
    Best regards,
    foxrafi

    Hi Foxrafi
I think you may have been misinformed. You cannot remove the global zone. The global zone is the installation of Solaris that you boot when you power on your server. So don't fear the global zone! Just think of 'global zone' as an alias for your normal Solaris installation.
Therefore the only way of removing the global zone is to uninstall Solaris itself.
What you have done by removing the three packages you mention is remove the utilities that allow you to create and administer non-global zones on the server. However the 'global' zone is still there. You haven't done any harm by removing those packages, however as they are part of the core cluster they are probably best left installed. It will also stop any confusion to your users who may run 'zonename' at somepoint and be surprised to find the command is not there (I haven't checked, but am assuming zonename is part of one of the packages you mention).

  • Non-Global Zones - how can I tell what the Global Zone is

    Hi,
I have a host that I know is a non-global zone (ngz). I can ssh to the ngz as root or a non-privileged user.
But once there how do I know what the host name for the global zone is?
I could probably run a script from all global zones to report all running zones and so I'd know that way but I have a specific need to know from inside the ngz.
    Thanks!

That's a built-in security feature; and I know of no way to circumvent this mechanism.
I had some hope that there was a way to 'see' at least the global-zone information from the zone. From the shell the 'zone' commands are available ..
    :# zoneadm list -cv
    ID NAME             STATUS         PATH
48 hostname_svn   running        /  So it's at least aware that it is a zone, even if it can't tell me anything else about itself. I can still go the long way around to get the information for my need, thanks.
The global zone is the only thing that can see everything. The non-global zones can only see information specific to their zone.
This is by design and it really is a security mechanism. You don't want the zones running outside of their boundaries and information about the global zone (or any other zone) is outside the boundaries of a non-global zone.

  • Can NOT manage a global zone

    Hello everybody
I'm trying to manage a Solaris 10 that is a global zone
When i go to Tab Available to Manage Assets and select Solaris 10 operating system and click Manage Asset an error occurs:
Target com.sun.hss.domain:name=NORM-x.x.x.x,type=OperatingSystem cannot be provisioned, it is a non-global zone with an unmanaged global zone
    Any ideas why?

From the Ops Center proxy, try to SSH to the IP of the asset with the provided credentials and run "zonename" - did you get "global"?
Ops Center requires the Global zone to be managed before the zones under. Also, depending on the discovery method you used, you may see a misleading name in that tab.
The best way to do this is to choose "Custom discovery" in 11g, or "Add Assets" in 12c and provide the specific IP of the global zone. This will guarantee that you are indeed trying to add the global zone.
Some more thoughts - if you're using 11g to discover s10s_u10 - you may be running into an issue with the /etc/release - try changing it to u9. Also, try running the latest OCDoctor --agent-prereq on that global zone.
Last - since you just installed, I would strongly recommend moving to 12c (Update 2 is already available) which has a tremendous amount of bug fixes.

  • Adding remote printer to non-global zone

I have a non-global zone with a remote printer defined, and lpstat shows
    # lpstat -lp abcdef
printer abcdef disabled since Thu Jun 06 13:18:43 2013. available.
    Remote Name: abcdef
    Remote Server: 192.168.x.x
On another non-global zone I want to print to the same printer. I referred to the Solaris Printing SAG, and I thought all I had to do is
    lpadmin -p abcdef -s abcdefserver
    but lpstat -lp abcdef gives
Failed to get printer info for abcdef: not-found
    The zone is
    SunOS myzone 5.10 Generic_142909-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V490
and the destination (abcdefserver) is a Windows server with the LPD service installed.
What else do I have to do? I can ping and telnet abcdefserver:515, so the network part seems to be fine.

  • HowTo mount the home dirs in the global zone to many zones?

I tried it with loopback mounts.
global zone /export/home is loopback mounted to /export/zones/zone1/root/export/home
    and to /export/zones/zone2/root/export/home
with the zonecfg command. Now booting zone1 works, zone2 exits with zoneadm: zone 'zone2': "/usr/lib/fs/lofs/mount /export/home /export/zones/zone2/root/export/home" failed with exit code 33
zoneadm: zone 'testserver': call to zoneadmd failedThanks in advance

Forget it. There was a shell with this directory as working directory...
    Sorry.

  • Date modified/Date Created/Date Added(timestamp) - not showing the actual date?

In finder, none of the date info seems to be accurate.
By example, I just downloaded a new app from a website (onyx in this case), todays date is Nov 13th and when I install the new app (i.e. drag and drop into Apps folders) in finder the Date modified says Nov. 1st, Date created says October 31. Should one of these columns not reflect the true date that the app actually got onto my mac? I understand that one of these clumns probably relfects the info contained within the downloaded app, but surely one column can tell me that I installed this app on November 13! The "Last opened" columns is the only "accurate" date column I have. (as I write this however, i've noticed that the 'Date Added column does say "Today").
I gues my question is what columne reflect what the file itself has imbedded in it, and what relfects the actions i've done (I.e. installed the app on Nov 13)
Any help would be very much appreciated. Note sure if this is somehting more worrisome or not, but i've had it for a while with no major issues other than frsutration of not understanding this. i'm on 10.7.2

The Date Modified column for the Applications folder itself will reflect the actual installation date. The others aren't supposed to.
