Adding scientific terms to spell check

Hi. In terms of Maverick's Spell Check, is there a way to import a medical dictionary?
Thanks

OK. Let's take it very methodically.
I'm using OS X 10.7.3
You're posting in the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard forum. (Mac OS X 10.7 Lion has its own separate forum.) Your original post indicates you are using "Mac OS X (10.6.4)".
couldn't find any folders or anything in the Spelling folder
First, you have three Spelling folders. I know Lion hides some stuff, so, because I'm not using Lion, I don't know if you see them all. They are
</System/Library/Spelling>
only stuff installed by Apple should go in here
</Library/Spelling>
here go spelling dics for all user accounts
<~/Library/Spelling>
here go your own spelling dics
LocalDictionary is a file in the latter folder. It may not have been created on your account. To create it, turn spell checking on, type in TextEdit a word the spell checker will flag as wrong, select it, and control-click (or right-click) on it. Choose "Learn Spelling" from the contextual menu. LocalDictionary will be created and the word entered in it. At least, that's what happens on Snow Leopard. I understand it's the same in Lion; maybe you should ask it in the Lion forum, to be quite sure.
TextEdit worked just fine until I tried to do this fix
I'm confused. What action did you actually take? You said you couldn't find the file -- so how did you try "to do this fix"?
now my TextEdit app is LOCKED...
What does that mean? TextEdit no longer responds to commands? If yes, have you tried force-quitting and restarting it?

  • Adding words to spell check

I need help with adding words to my spell check just about every name I spell shows as spelt wrong. Can you add words to the iPhone dictionary?

Thank you I keep checking for a way, everytime I spell names even my own it shows that it is spelt wrong! That drives me crazy!

  • Medical Spell Check

How I do I run the English USA dictionary then run English Medical dictionary when spell-checking documents?
I work in medical advertising and it would save me adding our medical terms to the English USA dictionary.

Yes, that's the way to do it.
I guess common medical terms are added, because hyphenation and spell check work very different (these terms, as you may well know, usally have Latin and Greek roots).
    (Additionally:)
You cannot set a document to a language. For existing documents: if you used Paragraph Styles, go to the Advanced Character Format and change the language there. The paragraphs that use these styles are adjusted automatically. If you did not used styles -- well, you should have! -- select all text and change the language using the Character panel.
You can also set the 'default language' for new documents: close all documents, then change the language using the Character panel. It should 'stick' for newly entered (but not styled) text.

  • Spell Check with All Caps Not Working

I feel like i'm missing something that should be pretty easy. I've searched both in the forums and the help file for pages 09, but can't seem to find it. so maybe i'm missing something fairly obvious...
but, i can't figure out how to get pages to do spell check on a word that is in ALL CAPS. For instance, if i type 'bddy' it shows up with a red-line underneath it, but if i type, "BDDY" there is no red-line.
how do i get it to stop skipping the words in all caps?

There's also no mention of this in the Pages '09 User Guide, which I'd go to before the Pages Help files.
Looks like a design choice to assume that anything that is ALL CAPS is to be treated as an acronym.
    Your choices seem to be:
    1. Don't use all caps, except for acronyms, and check closely that you make no typos in acronyms.
    2. Use lower case for acronyms so that the spell checker will flag them. Replace with ALL CAPS when you do a final spell check. (Acronyms that form properly spelled words will need an extra character added to cause the spell checker to flag them.
    3. Copy the text you want to check and paste it into an application that will flag acronyms. For word processors, this seems to require one that uses its own dictionary rather than the Mac OS X dictionary.*
    4. Do your writing/editing in a word processor fitting the description in #3. Transfer the text to Pages only for formatting (or not at all).

    Barry
    * One such 'application' is the Compose frame in this forum, running on Firefox (I haven't checked it on Safari).
PS: With luck, someone will have a more workable suggestion than the ones above.
PPS: Addition of the option to check or ignore ALL CAPS words in spell checking seems a natural for a feature enhancement request. Got to the "Pages" menu in Pages, choose Provide Pages Feedback, make the request, then be prepared to wait until at least the next full version of iWork to see any results.

EDIT: See, my PS was correct. Peter's suggestion is simpler than some of mine.

  • Acrobat 9 Professional - Adding Spell Check before Printing

    Hello,
As a new user and unfamiliar with how to manipulate Acrobat, please help me with setting up a form that automatically detects and alerts the user of spelling errors prior to printing or emailing. The form will be distributed to about 200 users so all settings may not all be automatically set in Adobe (e.g. spell checker box checked in preferences) among each user's Reader copy. But the idea is to make sure this form is completed without spelling errors, so how could the form be programmed for any or all of the following :
    1) The spell checking in preferences is automatically set to "checked" upon opening the form.
    2) The form has a PRINT and EMAIL button within it already. How would a script or whatever look like to first spell check the entire document prior to executing the print or email function?
    3) Could a pop-up window be added to alert of spelling errors during the previous process (#2)?
    Thank you.

What type of form are you using? Is it an AcroForm or a Designer XFA form?

  • How do I clear words I've added to the built in spell checker?

I accidently have added a few misspelled words to the built in spell checker. I have no idea how to reset it so that it just uses it's own words. Does anybody know how I can clear or reset the spell checker so that it just has the default words?

    Ashka,
I have this same problem of needing to delete a word I added in spell checker.
However I don't see a spelling folder in my user library. This is only my 4th day learning Mac OS moving from Windows, so please if you could walk me through to find the spelling file I would really appreciate it!

  • I want to remove an incorrectly spelled word from my spell check dictionary (--a word that I added to the dictionary).

While writing an e-mail, I added the name of a place to my spell check dictionary. Moments later, I realized that I had misspelled that place name. Now I want to remove the incorrectly spelled name. Is there a simple solution?

  • Spell Check ignores added words

I have a long list of added words in LocalDictionary. (Spell Check really needs a medical dictionary.) Spell Check now ignores all added words and marks those words as misspelled. When I tell Spell Check to learn a previously added word it does so. The LocalDictionary is not updated when the word is learned. Thus, Spell Check knows that the word is in the LocalDictionary when it is told to add a word, but not when it is spell checking.
This happens in TextEdit, Stickies, StoryMill, and all applications that use Apple's Spell Check. I copied the text of LocalDictionary, trashed the original, and saved a clean copy--no help. I used Terminal to kill and restart Spell Checking--no help. Shutdown--no help. My next step would be reinstalling OS X, but I'd prefer not to do that time-consuming task. Any advice?

    Welcome to our community, Dan
If you click File > Project Settings > General tab, what language is configured for the project?
Out of curiosity, how exactly did you check the dictionary to ensure the words were there?

  • 64-bit Spell checker in OPPM v9-Sp1 works, but need Custom Dictionary

My client adopted Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management (formerly ProSight) -- which is NOT P6, a couple of years ago. It entered production with v.8.0 which had a spell-checker included but which does not work with the approved 64-bit O/S (ie: Windows Server 64-bit). After being disappointed with the v.9.0 release also not supporting 64-bit O/S, the recently released v.9.0-Sp1 finally does. Good news!
I have the instructions (“Primavera Portfolio Management 8.0 Customizing the Spelling Checker.pdf”) for adding a custom dictionary to the system, but cannot find any information on doing this for OPPM v.9.0-Sp1.
Does anyone know if the same instructions still work, or where I can get new instructions for adding a custom dictionary (to avoid having the users need to add many new terms, including their own misspelled ones)?
    Thanx in advance.

    Hi Sachin:
Actually, after my message yesterday, I managed to find the document, buried in with the OPPM technical docs. Looks identical to the OPPM v.8 version. Thanx for your help.
Now that I have poked around a little more, I realized that I haven't seen anything about how to EDIT the dictionary files once created. How does one clean them up of accidentally (or unintentionally) added mis-spelled words? Every other application I've ever used with a spell checker has that function somewhere, but I can't see it in OPPM.
Any info on this issue? Thanx in advance.

  • Can i change the dictionary for spell checking

    Hi,
I am using the trial version of robo help and I am testing
how the support for german is.
I changed my project to german (file / project setings /
language). The result up to now is, that there is german spell
checking, but the dictionary used doesn't know all words that I' m
using. Of course I can add word by word to the dictionory, but I
dont't like to do this hard job.
Is there a way to use the dictionary which MS Word is using,
which would be very fine for me?
If anyone can help me, thanks for this.
    Kindly regards
    Fritzj

    Hi all
I did a bit of digging around and here is what I've
    discovered. Hopefully it will help?
I am using Word 2003, so the method outlined here is for that
version. Note that I'm not a particularly rabid Word user, as I
tend to avoid it if at all possible, so I suppose other versions
may differ. Additionally, I'm assuming here that you are referring
to the personal dictionary and not one that is supplied by virtue
of installing Word or some other component.
In Word, I located the personal dictionary. (Tools >
Options... > Spelling & Grammar tab > Custom
Dictionaries... button) This listed the "Full path" of
    C:\...\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof\CUSTOM.DIC. I find this
mildly amusing, as I can't truly see the "full path" and am left
wondering what lies between C:\ and \Application Data. I mean, ...
    could be anything, no?
So on a hunch, I looked in the following location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Rick Stone\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Proof
As luck would have it, there was CUSTOM.DIC all big as life
    and twice as natural.
Suspecting it was a simple ASCII text file as the RoboHelp
HTML personal dictionary is, I tried opening it using Windows
Notepad. Sure enough, it popped open. Seems to simply list terms
    with no other information.
So at this point, we know how to access the contents of the
personal dictionary for Word 2003. Now let's look at RoboHelp HTML,
    shall we?
In RoboHelp HTML, you click Tools > Spelling Options...
    > Dictionaries tab. Here, you should see Personal Dictionary.tlx
listed in the left panel bearing the label of "Used dictionaries:"
(Sorta sounds like a library sale, eh?) To the right of the file
name, in the same pane, you should see the path listed. Mine reads:
    file://C:/Documents and Settings/Rick Stone/Application
    Data/eHelp/Lexicons/Personal Dictionary.tlx
I opened it using Windows Notepad and here is what I see:
    #LID 30840
    1boffo i
    2xzxz azxzx
    3ppp ApPp
    4azx cxza
    5winnie CWiNnIe
    6garbo e
I have some really odd terms in there. And for good reason!
During my initial spelunking, it appears that a particular
structure is in place. So I tested by adding terms along with
different options for each term. The terms listed are matched to
the option used when you click the Modify... button on the Spelling
    Options dialog.
    1boffo i
1boffo is the term and the i means "No action" is the option
    used for the term.
    2xzxz azxzx
2xzxz is the term and the a means "Auto Change" is the option
used for the term. The zxzx following the a indicates the term to
    automatically change to.
    3ppp ApPp
3ppp is the term and the A means "Auto Change (Preserve
Case)" is the option used for the term. The pPp following the A
indicates the term to automatically change to.
    4azx cxza
4azx is the term and the c means "Change" is the option used
for the term. The xza following the c inidicates the term to offer
    to change to.
    5winnie CWiNnIe
5winnie is the term and the C means "Change (Preserve Case)
is the option used for the term. The WINnie following the C
indicates the term to offer to change to.
    6garbo e
6garbo is the term and the e means "Treat as misspelled" is
the option used for the term.
Sooo, having looked all that over, it would seem as simple as
copying the contents of the original Personal Dictionary from Word,
then opening the Personal Dictionary from RoboHelp HTML and pasting
the terms in. Then try modifying them a tad by inserting an "i"
following the term. I'm not sure if a tab is what was used between
the term and the i, so it may take a bit of trial and error.
Hopefully this helps a bit... Rick

  • Using Spell Check

I'm a medical student and I found a text document that has over 10K medical terms listed. I was wondering if there was an easy way to get all these words to be added into the built in OS X dictionary or if I would have to do it the hard way and spell check the document hitting learn 10K times.
    Thanks

user added words are kept in a regular text file home directory/library/spelling/LocalDictionary. one word per line. you can edit this file in any text editor and summarily dump the terms you need there. then log out/in.

  • Spell-check without auto-correction? Why not?

    Why can't we choose spell-check without auto-correction?

    Steven,
As I typed that Reply, your Spellcheck thread (for the forums), came immediately to mind.
That was one of the prime motivators in wanting a dictionary, that could be customized.
Over the years, I have migrated my WordPerfection dictionary through several versions, 'cause I have added a ton of wine, food, video and photo terms, and would hate to have to redo all of those, especially the ones using multi-national characters.
Yeah, maybe inclusion of "Photoshop," "Premiere," "InDesign," etc., etc., would be expected, or at least hoped for.
