Adding speakers

How can I hook up external speakers to my MacBook Pro?

How do I hook up external speakers?
A: Most speakers will connect through the USB or 1/8-inch audio out port on your Mac. Professional sets that use XLR or 1/4-inch connections require an external audio interface device to convert the digital signal from your Mac to the analog configuration of your speakers. On many newer Mac computers, the 1/8-inch jack doubles as a mini TOSLink interface, allowing for digital optical out. Digital optical out is popular on many home cinema and audiophile setups with a dedicated amplifier.

  • DDTS-100 adding speakers to 5.1 set-up

I read a review of the DDTS-00 decoder recently, and it suggested; "Why not add your existing stereo speakers to your 5.1 rig for 6.1 or 7.1 surround sound?". I've been scratching my head wondering how to do this. I have a DDTS-100 and the Inspire T5900 5.1 speaker set, I also have my old Inspire 5300 speakers handy - so I would be interested in doing this. The thing is though, unless I'm missing something, the subwoofer on a creative inspire 5.1 rig has no input for the extra speaker needed for 6.1, let alone the grey/side speakers input for 7.1. I know the DDTS-100 decoder is enabled with the inputs for 6.1 and 7.1 (via the 'upmix' in the case of 7.1), and I understand how the switchbox works, but as I see it... I would need the actual subwoofer to have the extra inputs too - like the subwoofer of a creative 6.1 or 7.1 set has. Was the reviewer that suggested this just not thinking straight, or is there a way to actually do this? I would dearly love to, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I read it here: http://www.ausmedia.com.au/Creative%20DDTS-00.htm
I was thinking, the only way I can think of doing this, and I'm not definately sure you could either, is to connect a 7.1 sound card to the switchbox of the DDTS-100 decoder with a 7.1 audio cable (lime green, black, orange and grey), with only the standard 5.1 connects (lime green, black and orange) going to the switchbox, and the grey/side speaker connect going into a pair of active speakers or a hi-fi. As I say, I'm not sure - but maybe this is something along the lines of what they meant? Other than that, maybe the reviewer was high at the time! :manvery-happy:

  • Ordering a Retina Display 15" MBP but have Some ?? Before I Order

Is the turbo boost something that brings the installed processor up to the stated speed and really works as if that processor was installed?  why not just have the higher processor available for install?
Is there anyway to get the Samsung Display opposed to the LG?  I do not think so and I have not tried to call the Apple order phone number, but I am hoping that if I call and ask they might help me get the Samsung retina display. I can feel the "NOs" coming with this question but I thought I would ask anyway.
I have tried to look through these posts and see if there is anything else I should be aware of when configuring the retina MBP 15"  If anybody has any suggestions I would appreciate it. I am upgrading the SSD and adding iWorks, or the 3 programs need to be added seperately.
Does the 15" retina display get 2880x1800 Retina display?
Is there anyway to get the machine with the SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) or do you have to order the SuperDrive? Does this take advantage of the USB 30 connection?
Finally, any good personal expereinces with added speakers that really make the sound beyond beleif? I wil be using this machine for teaching and many of the DVDs are produced by a guy who puts a lot of work into the sound. I would like to take full advantage of this with a great set of external speakers. Are they making any speakers that use the thunderbolt cable technology to connect the speakers into the retina MBP? what about the USB 3.0?
O, one more. this machine uses USB 3.0. If I purchase some of these cables to use for various connections, does the Apple MBP retina dispaly require any special kind of this cable?
    thanks!

"do you know when the current MPB (non retina display) was updated?"
    Summer 2012.
    See http://www.anandtech.com/show/6037/the-2012-macbook-pro-review for details.
"I have heard some negative things about the retina display"
Not sure what you heard but I'm very happy with my rMBP 13".
"why do they not install the SuperDrive in the retina display MBP?"
    To reduce weight and thickness.
If you feel you need a SD then order the external USB SD, http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive?fnode=5f
"If they do not have a built in SuperDrive how do people install programs like Office or Photoshop?"
Most SW is now downloadable so the need for a SD is lessening. M$ and Adobe are two SW vendors trailing in this regards. Again, spend $79 and get the external SD if you feel its needed. The other way is to make disk images of the install DVD if you now have access to a SD.

  • Better sound

Just bought a new Samsung 65 LED HDTV.  I am somwhat hearing impaired.  Tried to use the setting "clear listening" and the "amplified" sound settings under tools.  Best I can determine, I can't have both at once.  Also, didn't find a place where I hit "apply" or something like that.  Couldn't hear any difference in either setting, if I was actually getting to them.  Am I missing something here?  Also, thought I might improve the sound with added speakers.  I'm considering the HW-D450 TV speakers.  Don't find in the directions with TV how to do this.  I see only a couple of USB ports and a cable connection.  Don't see too well either so don't find anything like "audio out".  Would these speakers make for better sound and will they plug into my new TV?

    Hello martini
Skype should work for you. See their great Help web pages for all your questions on making Skype work or work better. Skype even offers dedicated Skype discussions and free technical support for your Skype-specific questions.
Yahoo! Messenger for Mac doesn't do audio. That is just how Yahoo writes the software. We cannot change that.
Mac-to-Mac, iChat AV (part of your Mac OS X software) is usually best, whether for text, audio, video, or all. If you are concerned about connecting with PC friends, iChat can connect via Jabber applications for text chat and with any PC that is using an AIM server client application for video and audio. For help getting started with iChat and for suggestions about headsets, see this current thread:
      http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5442877#5442877
A USB headset that work with your Mac should be fine, but, if you already have added speakers and a mic to your system, they should work for iChat AV and Skype. With either application, I almost never need to resort to headphones to limit echo or feedback on my G5 tower Mac.
If you are looking for other chat alternative software applications, you can consider the apps in the Chatting and Conferencing section of this page:

Skype and the other apps identified as "Cross Platform" will be easiest to use for contacts that use PCs.
Microsoft Messenger (MSM) (and the older MSN Messenger) for Mac (MSMM) are text only apps. You cannot use iSight (or any camera) with MSMM for Mac. MSMM (for Mac) will connect with MSM whether on PCs or on other Macs, but for text ONLY.
There are two alternative clients of the MSMM server that allow Mac video chat (but no audio) with PC Microsoft/MSN Messenger users:

  • Added an avr, need help with tv speakers

    hello community,
i have a Toshiba Regza 46mv732 led tv and i recently added an Onkyo TX-NR525 avr. everything is hooked up correctly, and surround sound works perfectly EXCEPT i cannot get the tv speakers to turn off automatically when the avr is turned on. i have to manually turn the tv volume down. my neighbors tv, a Samsung, turns the speakers off automatically when his avr is turned on-can i do the same with my Toshiba? am i missing something in the tv settings? and yes, i have a high-speed hdmi cable hooked up to hdmi-1(ARC) on the tv to the avr.
any help will be surely welcomed.
    thanks!!!!

That doesn't appear to be a model made by Toshiba USA, and this is the Toshiba USA forums. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region, because I don't have specific information on your model. I can say that it appears to depend on model. On my Toshiba TV, my speakers don't mute automatically. I use an optical cable to connect my sound system. When I set up my sound system, it had me press the volume buttons on my remote so it could detect what signal to use for volume up and volume down; I didn't press those buttons. I used rewind and fast-forward (because I don't use those buttons for their intended purpose). This allows me to control my TV's volume with the volume buttons and the sound system's volume with the rewind/fast-forward buttons.

  • Adding external speakers

Can external speakers be added to the new Imac? Especially a sub woffer?

Any speaker system that connects though a mini headphone jack can be added to your iMac - even those with a subwoofer.
Which one you choose is up to you, but I have the Logitech Z-2300s. I listen to a lot of jazz - Red Garland is on right now - and even delve into Metallica and new progressive rock like Spocks Beard and Dream Theater. I also have a large-ish classical collection. My tastes are very eclectic and the Z-2300s handle it all very well.
If I were to replace them, the only speakers that I think are as good or better in the same price range are the Klipsch 2.1s.
Just my opinion. The best thing is to try to listen to as many sets as you can and make the decision.

  • Trouble adding external speakers to iMac

I have a 24 inch flat screen iMac. I'm trying to add my Klipsch external speakers to the iMac. The speakers have a sub-woofer that gets plugged in. The other audio jack is plugged into the iMac's headphones port (I've tried the audio port as well). For some reason, the iMac goes silent, but no sound comes from the external speakers. The speakers worked fine with my pc. I've gone to system preferences -> Sound-> and verified that the Output is "headphones". I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Yes, the speakers are powered on and the volume is turned up. Any other ideas??? I don't know where to turn at this point. Any help is appreciated!

Try connecting regular headphones (like iPod earbuds) into the headphones port. Do they work? If they do not, System Preferences Sound pane Output tab is set correctly, and the sound volume is not set to mute, there is something wrong with the headphones port. If they do work, there is something wrong with the speakers.
If the problem appears to be the port, you might try resetting PRAM. Some sound settings are stored there.

  • Adding external speakers to imac

I have a 2nd generation iMac that I would like to add external speakers to. I would like to be able to listen to music in the back of my shop as well as in the office at the same time. I know I need an amp to boost the sound, after that I am lost. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Thebausone

"I know I need an amp to boost the sound"
No you don't. I use external speakers w/my iMac. My sound is "boosted" by a woofer. I could crumble the whole neighborhood if I so wish.
Visit Apple's online store if there is not a local offline store near you for speakers for your iMac. Also, check out Amazon for great deals for speakers.
I have the USB JBL speakers. !http://www.binbin.net/photos/jbl/jbl/jbl-red-creature-ii.jpg! which I purchased from the online Apple Store when they were on sale.

  • Just added Lion and now can't use remote speakers with iTunes

I recently installed the Lion OS (10.7.4) and now I cannot access my remote connection to my home stereo for iTunes. I can't find the icon to even select multiple spakers.

I suggest optening the Print & Scan Sytem Preferences. Once the preference pane opens highlight your printer in the Printers column on the left side of the window, then click on the little minus sign below the printer in order to remove your current printer selection.
Once your printer has been deleted, then click on the little plus sign located next to the minus sign in order to re-select your printer. Once the 'AddPrinter' window opens simply select your printer from the list. Make sure the printer is powered ON, there are no error LED's ON, and that any necessary cables are connected to your iMac. Hopefully reselecting the printer will resolve your issue.

  • Should I schedule a repair because my iPad's speakers sound a little scratchy at high volume levels when it's a high note or something like that, is this regular?

Should I schedule repair or is it normal?

You have my sympathy for your dilemma as far as aesthetics go. My previous iMac was the 17" core 2 duo and, like you, I think it had a nicer, more artistic look about it and it fit in well with the decor of my office. Even though they are basically the same in overall design, the newer aluminum models do seem to have a somewhat jarring industrial appearance. Nevertheless, I wouldn't spend that amount of money to repair an old machine just because I thought it looked better than the new models. I'm happy that I replaced my old white iMac but then I wanted the larger, brighter screen as well as the faster processor and better graphics card and all that other guy stuff . And now with the even newer and better iMacs out there it makes much more sense to go for one of those rather than to repair and keep your old one. More ram can be added very cheaply now and you can add a lot more to the new models than you have on the old machine. I'm not sure whether or not your old speakers would work with one of the new machines but a new set isn't really all that expensive and they might even be better. And actually, even though I noted earlier that the aluminum models have that industrial look (to me at least), those glass screens are great for graphic work. Much better than the old ones.
    Good luck
    Rick

  • Satellite A505-S6973 - No sound of my laptop speakers

I own an A505-S6973 and today i lost volume on my speakers. When i jack in my headphones i get sound but without the headphones plugged in, I get no sound of my laptop speakers.
I checked device manager for software problems but everything is cleared, also, my volume is fully on.
I attempted a restore, but was unsuccessful, also i tried to uninstall and reinstall value added package but when attempting to launch the software after extracting it an error[0x8146045B] signals itself.
This morning everything seemed to work fine, the only thing i can think of, i removed windows media my network places sharing.
If this is the culprit can someone guide me on how I can re-install it. Also, the value added package issue, is there anything that can be done, because the buttong to enable/disable touchpad when depress nothing happens but if i use the function key with F9 it enables/disables.
I really hope someone can help me, it seems this is an unlucky weekend for me.

As I see, the VAP utility makes problems. The next step I advise you to do a little bit dangerous as you have to remove some elements in registry, but before
    1. Make the ,,Hidden Folders,, to be seen. (Control Panel- Appearance and Personalization-Folder Options (click the , show hidden files,, and then choose ,, Show hidden files, folders,, and Apply)
2 Go to C:\Users\, here you should choose your profile name, in my case it ,, jeka,, \AppData\Local\temp\TC20020600B.temp\ Here you should see TVAP folder, remove it completely
3 Run the ,,regedit,, that found in Windows folder. Choose ,, Edit,, -,,Find,, and type in ,,toshiba value added,, In left Column you will see highlighted folder with value like 8FFFC660FB2109346A37579FE5FF81E8, delete it. restart computer.
Then, start Tvap exe, it should work now. But you should be careful working with registry, don't delete anything other

  • Remote app on iPhone and multiple speakers - I have to tap multiple times

I have a set-up with an Apple TV, iTunes on my iMac and a PC laptop plus 2 airport expresses throughout the house, all of those connected through airTunes.
This allows me to play music from any of these iTunes/Apple TV to the aiport expresses.
I have been using the remote app for over a year and a glitch seems to have appeared after I added the 2nd airport express (older model , 802.11g only).
Whenever I start the app fresh on my iPhone and need to change the speakers to another destination (from, say, "living room" to "kitchen"), the check mark moves to "kitchen" for a couple of seconds, then back to "living room" (and/or the Apple TV usually). I tap "kitchen again", usually same result. Only after 3 or 4 taps, will it stick to "kitchen" and the music will start.
Not a big problem, just something very annoying.
    Any idea?

Am I seriously the only one with this issue? By the way I replaced my old Netgear router with a spanking new Airport Bast Station and the same issue is happening.

  • Problems Setting-up Airport Express to Play Music thru External Speakers

    Hi:
I have an HP dv6500z laptop connected to an HP printer C6280 via LinkSys wireless network using the LinkSys 54G router and PrintServer. It works fine.
I purchased an Apple Airport Express and want to connect it to this network so that I can play songs from within iTunes through external powered speakers wirelessly. The powered speakers are connected to the Airport Express (AE).
The AE is plugged into the AC outlet and the speakers are turned on. The AE is roughly 10 feet away from the laptop/router, just across the room. The AE's
LED is flashing amber (It does not yet recognize the network). I installed the Airport Utility from the enclosed CD, downloaded all patch upgrades and it installed successfully.
Now, how do I tell the Airport Utility to recognize and connect to my existing LinkSys network, so that the AE recognizes it ? The instructions are not clear on this note...they say to run the Airport Utility and then follow the on-screen instructions. The instructions tell you that you will lose your wireless network connection if you continue...and you do if you try.
The same information comes up if you try to do a manual install.
How do I connect the AE to an existing network ? This information seems to be missing. If I go to the AirPort Utility Help and search and search on Setting Up AirPort Express, it tells me the following:
Connect your stereo or powered speakers to your AirPort Express using the mini-jack on the top side of your AirPort Express, and then plug your AirPort Express into a wall outlet.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows.
Click Music in the toolbar, and select the Enable AirTunes checkbox.
Problem: What Music in What toolbar ? I do not see this...
Enter an iTunes speaker name and password. This is the name displayed in the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window.
Problem: Where does this information come from
If you're setting up your AirPort Express for the first time, choose Assist Me from the Base Station menu and follow the onscreen instructions.
It seems like something is missing from the setup.
Aaah...Just for the heck of it, I went under Base Station > Assist Me
and told it to continue even though the dialog box said it would change the network.
It displayed a tabbed dialog box where I could configure the AirPort Express, including a tab named Music.
    Note:
The following two items are listed in Apple's on-line Help inside of Airport Utility, and on the web, yet I did not see them inside of Airport Utility when trying t oconfigure my AE.
I did not see a checkbox to check, named Enable AirTunes.
I did not see any place for entering the name and password for my speakers.
I followed all of the instructions and things looked like they were going well until I clicked Finish.
Them it said something like it could not save the settings..try again.
Well, I did, but when I brought Airport Utility back up, it kept saying that it could not detect the AE,
and when I went under the Base Station menu, all items were grayed-out, so I couldn't do anything.
Please help... the instructions need to clearer and more detailed.
    Thanx, Dale
HP dv 6500z Windows Vista New Airport Express

    Hi:
    Thanx for your reply.
After several more hours of trial & error over the weekend,
I finally have the Green Light (LED) on the Airport Express.
And it stays green, even if I unplug it from the AC outlet,
and plug it back in later. I have the green light so this
tells me that I have gotten past one hurdle.
OK...in order to get this far, I had the AE wired to the
laptop or LinkSys router via an Ethernet cable. How do
I go about making this a "wireless" connection. LinkSys
told me how to take my laptop from a hardwired connection
to wireless, but it doesn't address the issue when you have
a 3rd party device hardwired that you want to make wireless.
    Side Note:
I have not tried this yet, but I found a note on the web that
stated something like this: after getting the green light,
this guy then disconnected the Ethernet cable from the AE,
unplugged the AE from AC power for a few minutes, plugged it
back in to AC power, and voila! ... he was wirelessly on his network.
OK...let's assume that my AE is now on the wireless network.
What type of special settings do I need to make inside of iTunes
in order to get sound to the speakers.
I have my powered speakers recognized by iTunes...I can select them.
But, it appears that something may be blocking my AE from talking to
my network...I keep getting a pop-up box from Symantec saying that it
is detecting a "virus" (for lack of a better term) at the IP address
that I set my AE to. Oh, yes...that's another question...
When manually setting up the AE, I have my router network's IP address
(dotted-quad) in the list of parameter settings, but...near the top of
the list, the Airport Utility software asks for your AE's IP.
Well, what is it ? Nobody has told me ... Where do I get it from ???
Or...do I assign an arbitrary value to it based on the dotted-quad below ?
The router has an IP address of something like 192.168.1.xyz. I know what
the xyz is for the router but, what number do I use here for the AE, or
does it matter as long as it isn't being used by another network device.
    My network is static.
So, after using a number not used by my network elsewhere (that I am aware of,
and...inserting a $ (to specify hexadecimal format)in front of my encryption password, NOT the router password (they intermix the naming of these) I finally managed to get the Green Light on the AE. Note: I am using the WEP-64 bit encryption which is also refered to a "40 bit" (No..not hexadecimal..$40 = 64) which is 40-bit to which a random 24 bit is added to give you 64 bit encryption.
    To summarize;
I appear to have the AE configured via hardwire (I have the green light).
In iTunes, I can see and select my powered-speakers from the drop-down menu in the lower right corner, but i am s not yet streaming (hearing) the music.
It appears that Symantic may be knocking me off the network, or not letting the AE talk to the laptop/router...I have not yet tried this, but another nugget that I found on this site says to go to System Preferences (where?), click on the Firewalls tab, click Advanced , and uncheck "Block UDP Traffic".
Is this what may be blocking my AE talking to the laptop/router ?
Any help/feedback would be appreciated...Thank you.
I'm getting close...but no cigar (yet).

  • AirPort recognized but no pop-up window for remote speakers in iTunes

I have connected an Airport Express to an existing wireless network of multiple windows (2000 and XP) computers via a Linksys router. The base station is properly recognized (solid green LED, unit correctly identified in admin utility, and I was able to update the firmware to v.6.3 wirelessly) and I have it configured as a wireless client. I want to use it solely to stream music from iTunes to a remote stereo. When I open iTunes, there is no pop-up window offering an option to enable remote speakers. When I installed the airport software, it tried to install iTunes, but the installation aborted because I have a more current version. Is there some software on the disk that needs to be added to iTunes? What is AirTunes? Is this actual software that needs to be installed to stream iTunes to a remote location? Does it refer to the airport firmware? Is it just a "cute" name for the airport hardware (Apple marketing hype)? Thanks for any help.

Rj in WI is correct. I just started using iTunes about a month ago after my wife got an IPod. It took me about an hour of frustration and reading the instruction before I saw in the bottom right of the window "my computer". You click on that and then you can change it to the Airport network. Unfortunately It appears you can only send to only one place. I have two Aiport Expresses and I can only send it to one of the Express devices, or the computer, but not to two or all three places at one time.
