Adding SSD to improve boot times

HP TouchSmart 1220UK, Windows 7 64-bit, 8GB RAM
Hi
I,m looking to improve the boot time on this machine (currently it's about 5 mins).
Is it possible to add an SSD ie. still retain my 1.5TB HD and have an SSD as well?
If this is possible, will it speed up my boot times?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello UKBigAL:
Welcome to Hp's forum. I know nothing about SSD. Time for you to do PC tune up and run your disk deframenter after you run HP Support Assistance tune up. You have to many start up programs running. Please type in Services in all programs search box. Open it when it appears go down the list and turn off the extra garbage programs that are not needed on start up like games alerts. Or you can use this program and it will fix every thing for you. Your computer will start up less then a minute. Total Defense  PC tune up http://www.totaldefense.com/home-and-home-office/pc-tune-up.aspx  My computer use to be slow like yours also open up Internet Explorer click on tool select Internet Options now put a check mark Delete browser history on exit then click advance tab above check mark Empty Temporary Internet file folder when browser is closed.  This should fix your start up issue.

  • Improving Boot Time on Compact Fieldpoint

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to improve the boot time of Compact Fieldpoint controllers?  Right now, I've got some not real complex code with 2-3 Loops (lots of shared variables, though).  It takes roughly 5-8 minutes for the loops to start running after the unit is powered on or rebooted.  After they start running, the performance is OK but not great.  I'm using a cfp-2020, but will be moving to a 2120 soon.
    Thanks!
    -Matt

I was also having problems on my cFP-2120 with the initial read on shared variables hosted on the cFP controller.  I was working with only about a dozen shared variables and seemed to take several minutes before all the variables were up to speed.  When I watched them on the variable manager, I could see them get their first values one at a time with about 5-8 seconds from one variable to the next.  The FPremote.ini tip that I had seen in a few threads did seem to help.  One comment I would add is that it didn't seem to take effect until after the controller was rebooted.
I would like to pose a few questions of an NI person as to why this file is needed?  It isn't logical that the absence or presence of an empty file would have any effect on the speed of the shared variable engine.  Are there any configuration settings that get added to it automatically?  Are there any settings to be added that have any meaning to the shared variable engine?  It appears to remain empty.
Has this behavior been documented as a bug within Labview or Fieldpoint?  It seems that if something as simple as adding an empty file to a directory improves performance, a Fieldpoint patch or upgrade should be put in the drivers in the quarterly service CD's to take care of this automatically.
There should probably be a knowledgebase article on this in the official NI website rather than just the threads in the forums addressing this issue.  I did a search for fpremote.ini from the NI home page and zero results came up.

  • X230, formatting mSATA SSD affect to booting time?

    Dear All,
I'm just using Thinkpad X230, it has 2 hdd : 500gb SATA & 32GB mSATA SSD, after creating DVD recovery, i formatted the 32GB mSATA, after formatted and use the drive as storage my booting time take too long, about 3 minutes.
Please help how restore my booting time (also restore the 32GB mSATA), i can't recover my x230 now because taking time very long (to backup the data, recovery and copy the data back)
    Regard's
    Wandy Effendi

you would need to reinstall the
Intel RST software and ExpressCache software on the X230's mSATA.

  • Improve boot time on older mac running yosemite

    Hi,
I've been upgrading to all OS X versions since the time i purchased my MBP back in 2008 without any hiccups whatsoever. Of late, after moving to Yosemite, have experienced otherwise leading to my reverting back to Mavericks twice.
As i wish to move forward and address the root cause of the problem have done bit of googling around and came across a post in the community stating that it'd be easier if i submitted my machine report to aide the proposition to my specific problem.
Please find below the report generated from running EtreCheck on my MBP:
    Problem description:
Boot times on my mbp 2008 is reasonable slow

  • Adding an image during boot time.

Hi everyone, i was looking for adding some boot splash image to my arch (like suse, ubuntu, or window$), but there is more than one method to do this. Some ones are more dificult, involving a kernel patch or something.
    I saw the wiki for:
    -Gensplash
    -Splashy
    -Fbsplash
    -Bootsplash
So, what is the easiest method to have a fancy boot splash image for a newbie like me?
    Thanks in advance.

Ok, i used the Fbsplash method because it looks like the most easy way and it was.
It loads correctly but it's shown only when the modules are being loaded.
First, load the initramfs and uvdev (text mode), the splash is shown (arch-black), then it disappear and go back to text mode to load the locales and daemons.
Is there any way to show the splash for the entire boot process? or, load the initramfs and uvdev, then show the splash, load every thing else (don't go back to text mode), and show KDM?
    Thanks in advance.

  • [solved] dhcpcd seriously slowing boot time, how to fix?

As the title says, dhcpcd is really the limiting factor in my boot process. Of the 4.125 seconds spent doing userland boot stuff, 2.95 are spent waiting for dhcpcd to finish loading so the network.target is reached and the last few things can continue loading. It might seem petty to complain about an 8 second boot, but I'm just trying to get it as quick as possible. What can I do to make it go faster? I've read through the wiki on improving boot times, dhcpcd, etc. and haven't found anything that has helped significantly. This is on a permanent ethernet connection, by the way.

Without ARP, it's under 200 milliseconds. This was a lucky run due to RFC mandated randomised startup delays (this is noted when you add --debug, I omitted this otherwise this post would be quite huge with other debug info)
But wait, we can go faster yet by ignoring these RFC mandated delays.

There are other ways of making dhcpcd go faster, but that involves hacking the code NOT to query the kernel for any existing IP addresses or routes so we don't break networking needlessly even for a every small window and other such things.
So at 15ms I think dhcpcd is pretty fast, and this is just profilng via the time shell command.
Of course, dhcpcd by default provides the most RFC compliant way of autoconfiguring your network address.
But of course, I leave the best trick until last. A well configured system with well written programs shouldn't need to forceably wait for the initial DHCP run to finish.
    roy@uberpc ~/src/dhcpcd $ sudo dhcpcd -k

If you still believe dhcpcd to be slow, add the debug option and post some logs, ideally with timestamps and then we'll talk about making it go faster to meet your needs.

Hello everyone. I'm using Arch Linux x86_64 with LXDE. My spec is Celeron G1610 with normal HDD drive. I know it is not the SSD but can i improve boot time?
    Systemd-analyze:
    Startup finished in 2.780s (kernel) + 6.759s (userspace) = 9.539s
    And blame:
    2.066s NetworkManager.service
    667ms systemd-vconsole-setup.service
    564ms systemd-logind.service
    557ms kmod-static-nodes.service
    557ms systemd-udev-trigger.service
    509ms systemd-fsck@dev-disk-by\x2duuid-51deec47\x2d9367\x2d400a\x2d8f
    425ms polkit.service
    363ms dev-hugepages.mount
    362ms dev-mqueue.mount
    362ms sys-kernel-config.mount
    361ms systemd-update-utmp.service
    351ms sys-kernel-debug.mount
    350ms systemd-sysctl.service
    334ms systemd-remount-fs.service
    331ms tmp.mount
    327ms systemd-journal-flush.service
    200ms systemd-random-seed.service
    185ms [email protected]
    140ms systemd-tmpfiles-setup-dev.service
    129ms systemd-user-sessions.service
    99ms udisks2.service
    81ms home.mount
    46ms systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service
Userspace is loading almost 7 seconds, is there any way to improve that ?? It is fresh install.

I think it boots pretty fast as it is.
You can see how it compares to others https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=147841
Times like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1300124 are possible on SSDs.
When posting configs, code or command output, please use [ code ] tags, not [ quote ] tags https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode
    like this
It makes the code more readable and - in case of longer listings - more convenient to scroll through.

  • Slow Boot Times after installing new SSD and Lion

Can anyone please help interpret why I'm having slow boot times?  I have copied my console printout during the boot and it seems to be doing a repetitive action while booting.
    Thanks

  • New T530: same boot time after cloning HDD to SSD - what to do next to optimize performance?

    Hi,
This is my very first post here so bear with me if I have not observed any guidelines.
After I got a new T530 from Lenovo (i5-3230M, 8G RAM 1DIMM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, 1920x1080, 16GB Micro SSD SATA3, NVIDIA Optimus with 1GB), I swapped the DVD burner with the 500GB HDD and put a 128GB Samsung 840 Pro as my primary drive. I cloned all HDD contents to the SSD and removed all stuff in the HDD (I don't have a Windows 7 disk that's why I didn't do a clean install on the SSD). After these changes, I found my boot time to still be 30 seconds - which I guess is quite slow for an SSD main drive.
I've read up a fair bit on the Lenovo Community and the ThinkPad forum for solutions but have not found a conclusive answer to this problem. I guess I just want some advice from experienced users on what to do next after cloing the HDD to the SSD so that I can optimize the SSD's performance.
    1) I found the 16GB Micro SSD SATA3 is named "Lenovo_Recovery (Q". As I don't have a Windows 7 installation disk, is it possible for me to perform a clean install on my SSD C: Drive from the Recovery?
    2) If recovery is not possible, I am thinking of removing some of the bloatware(Corel burner, Nitro Pro, and many ThinkVantage utilities). But I also read somewhere that simply removing them does not help much (as opposed to a clean install). Is there anything Lenovo software worth saving (power manager maybe?)
To be sure both my TRIM and AHCI are enabled. I welcome and am grateful for inputs of other advice outside the above two questions: for example whether I should disable paging files or set paging files to the 500GB HDD disk; whether I should create a RAM disk, whether I should delete or shift system retore files, or whether I should change locations for certain temporary files.
    Many thanks for your input

You're already getting detailed advice here.  I'm just chiming it to say that the above doesn't sound quite right.
Lenovo_Recovery (Q) is normally a partition on the main drive and contains the recovery image.  It wouldn't be on the micro SSD - AFAIK.  The recovery image contains an as-shipped image of your working partitions.  Even if you used it, you wouldn't get what's considered a "clean" install (from MS media and without the Lenovo additions).  You'd get the OS as shipped - modified and added-to by Lenovo.
That micro SSD is probably part of the reason you don't see much difference in your boot times.  It caches frequently-used files and (at least once trained or pre-loaded) sort of simulates running from an SSD.  Without it your original boot time would probably have been longer.
[edit] Did you make recovery media from your HDD before removing it from the main bay.  I'm all for clean installs (how I run my T420) but that might be handy to have down the road some time.  Also you might want to pull a copy of SWTOOLS (I think that's what it's called these days...) and save it on DVD or someplace.  There are a few things you can't download from the Lenovo site (3rd-party multimedia apps, for example) that you might want to add to a clean install later. The installers are in SWTOOLS (or whatever it's called....)

  • Slow boot time on new SSD

I replaced my old hard drive with an SSD, and I'm getting boot times much slower than expected, between 40 and 45 seconds. I have already set my SSD as the startup disk in System Preferences, repaired disk permissions, performed a PRAM reset, and turned on TRIM. Application launching and shut down are extremely fast, so I'm not sure why I'm getting such slow boot times.
I'm running a Macbook Pro 15", early 2011, 2 GHz Intel Core i7 and 8GB RAM. My 256GB SSD still has 160 GB available.

Could it be related to the fact that the SSD is listed as disk two in the EtreCheck report?
NO.  The following is "My" SSD information on my Late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2GHz i7 quad core.  It is not much different from yours

  • X220 with Intel 310 ssd slow boot times

I recently bought an x220 i5-2520 and installed an intel 310 80GB ssd.
I cloned C: using the intel Acronis tools, updated all drivers and firmware and all works well.
However, my boot times are over 1 minute - much less than the 20-40 seconds I see posted on the web.
I have cleaned out a lot of unnecessary items from startup using msconfig, but no major difference.
It seems to me that most of the slowdown is happening after the login. It takes around 30 seconds after that to get to the desktop.
Why are my boots 2-3x slower than others?

    Hi,
I'm running a slightly different configuration, with bios at 1.21, the I7 processor, the Intel 310 ssd and a samsung SSD in the primary drive.  I generally average about 20 seconds to ready for input after inputting the HD & Windows password.
I did create the "Recovery" CD/DVD set and installed to the Intel 310 using the Recovery disks without any problem.  My boot time included the standard Lenovo/ThinkPad software and usually that doesn't cause much delay.
My other software is iTunes, Office 2010, Picasa, Adobe PhotoShop, and VMWare (my real work).  Even the virutal system run quit quickly.
    What SW are you running?
I did a couple of tests with 320GB original HD, and boot time was only 2-3 seconds more.

  • X301 SSD Boot Time

    Hi,
I'm considering the X301 with a SSD. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy now or just hold up until Win7 or a hardware refresh.
One thing I'm concerned with is boot time. Can anyone tell me what their getting on a X301 with MS Office loaded for boot time, hibernate time and wake time? I'm not planning to use the dvd and will have the 6 and 3 cell batteries installed.
    Thanks.
    Regards-Michael G.

just so you know, windows 7 could be up to a year away.
my X300 would boot server 2008 in about 35 seconds to the desktop with aero installed.   i never used vista on it.
hibernate... dunno.   i never use it.
sleep and wake only took a few seconds.   sleep was roughly 10 seconds and wake about 2.
office 2003 apps loaded in about 3~5 seconds depending on the app.
i haven't had the chance to play with an X301 but would imagine it to be the same or slightly quicker due to the faster memory bus.
    hopefully that helps a bit.
    good luck!

  • Boot times vary extremely after SSD install on a Macbook 6,1

I have a white unibody Macbook (Macbook6,1), which is factory-built-to-order except for the following components that I installed yesterday:
    - 8 GB (2x 4GB) DDR2 RAM from OWC
    - OCZ Octane SATA 2.0 256 GB SSD Drive
I have a 100% clean install of OS X Snow Leopard, and all the updates have been performed.
The problem I have is the following: extremely long boot times, but only when booting after a full shutdown.
For example, during the update-restarts the computer re-booted extremely fast (as expected from an SSD).
Also, re-booting after OS X install was fast. When selecting restart from the OS, and watching the restart process, it boots very, very fast.
It's only when I'm starting up from a full shutdown that it seems like I have to wait forever, and by forever I really mean the "gear" is turning over 10 minutes (never bothered to time it, it's very, very long). It's even longer than a 'safe mode' boot (which, in my experiences, performs normally).
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be here? I've read lots of other posts, but don't really see a similar pattern...
(I've also tried the "system preferences"-"select startup disk" item, but that doesn't help, also because the only disk in the system is the SSD...)
    Thanks guys!!!

The drive worked fine booting from an external enclosure as well.
Below from a non-boot (hang) during startup:
    Got boot device = IOService:/AppleACPIP...
    BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2
    Bug: launchctl.c:3557 (23930):6 ioctl(s6, SIOCAIFADDR_IN6, &ifra6) != -1
Running fsck on the boot volume...
    Executing fsck_hfs (version diskdev_cmds-491.6~3).
launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
    AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState(0xceb1b00, 2 -> 1) timed out after 100107 ms
When it boots slow, it hangs a bit on 'executing' and 'launchctl', but I didn't get a "timed out" before.
I just re-booted again and now I get this:
    Got boot device = IOService:/Apple....
    BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2
..and then it went very fast and I saw something like "fsck not needed because volume is journaled", and the desktop appeard instantly after.
Does anyone have any ideas why I'm getting such different booting patterns?

  • Optical Drive/s eject on startup - SSD Slow Boot time also

    Hi guys,
Been researching this problem over and over with no avail.
I have installed a 240GB OWC 6GB SSD in this machine:
    Mac Pro MID 2010
    32 GB RAM
    240 SSD
    3 x 1T 7200 RPM Drives (bays 2 - 4)
    8-Core 2.4
    DVD Super drive
    LG BluRay Drive
Sonnet USB 3.0 Card  -  (Nothing plugged in)
Black Magic Intensity Pro -  (Nothing plugged in)
    Stock Graphics Card
    USB Keyboard (mac)
    Trackpad
    Wacom Bamboo Tablet
    Software:
    FCPX / Motion
    Adobe Suite
    Lion 10.7.3 FRESH / CLEAN
I have done a fresh install of lion 10.7.3!
I have selected my SSD as started up disk
    I have reset the PRAM
    I have reset SMC
I have no apps running at startup
    I have trashed the prefs
I have run disk utility and repair permisions on the SSD boot Drive
I have let Onyx do its thing with cleanup etc.
When I boot, the white screen appears for upto 30sec - 1.5mins, once I see the apple logo, it takes about 10sec to give me desktop and all is good. Everything is lightning fast, and I couldn't imagine my machince lacking performance in any way besides boot time. Shutdown is approx 2 seconds.
It appears that it waits for other possible boot drives, then gives up and boots from the SSD.
Sometimes my optical drives open during white screen on boot???
    Any suggestions to solve this?
    Thanks

Me brain-storming & thinking out loud about how I would go about troubleshoot this:
Every time you zap pram you need to reset the default boot volume.
I never use Onyx after looking at it and keeping it around for awhile, I have mixed idea that people are looking for a problem to fix and do I trust it? gets mentioned enough.
LG BR - can you take that out of the picture to test with it not connected?
Wacom Tablet - take it out of the equation for testing
USB3 - CallDigit? that has USB3 + SATA and looks and sounds good.
    Try w/o it also.
Just because there is nothing connected - I've seen a cable that just by being plugged in was the cause of slow boot.
Clone the OS to SSD? sounds like you didn't do that which in the past has had mixed results (sometimes with bad consequences and hard to know why, too many variables) but a clean install should be perfect. One person's though took "ages" to do what should have been very quick.
I assume you would also clone the SSD to backup as image or to another drive.
How does it boot from a 300GB partition off a platter?
3 x 1TB: are these an array? do any of them have a system on it? sounds like you don'[t as it might otherwise choose non-SSD boot drive.
An SSD from restart sometimes is fast(er) but from cold boot the system may not know it is there and how to send a signal to it?
What does OWC say? about SSD, about the USB3 card.
Even having 32GB RAM can take longer to POST.

  • First world problem: exceptionally long boot time

no complaint, just wondering if boot-time can be improved.  Any of you who might enjoy sifting through a system.log for what might account for ostensibly lengthening boot times, I give you my most recent log and thank you in advance.
