Adding switches to AEB

So I have one of the first AEBs 802.11n without gigabit ethernet ports. It is located in my office area which has my girlfriends laptop and my MBP. I am usually wired to my AEB when my MBP is at my desk. I have several devices in my living room which are connected to a hub which is then connected to my AEB.
I want to use gigabit with my MBP and media devices, specifically my PS3, so that I can transfer large files between them so I was thinking about getting two gigabit switches, a netgear GS105 and a GS108. The smaller of the two would be connected to the AEB and MBP in my office area while a cable would run to my TV area where the second switch would be placed connecting all of the other devices.
My question is will this work with the two switches? I am rather limited with my knowledge in networking and just wasn't sure if connecting two switches would work or not. If this will work will be any special cabling be needed other than the CAT6 for gigabit speeds?
thanks in advance!
John Miller

My question is will this work with the two switches?
Yes, you can place multiple switches in series with each other. Switches will either have a dedicated uplink port or utilize auto-sensing ports to allow chaining them together. For Gbps circuits you would want to use either Cat5e or Cat6 cabling and limit the maximum run under 100 m (328 ft). Note you will not get any bandwidth performance gain using Gibabit switches while they are connected to any non-Gigabit devices as they will only be able to operate at the lower bandwidth. However, for future growth purposes it would make sense to add Gigabit components as you can.

  • Adding switch into an existing stack

                       Hi all,
I have an existing stack which comprises of 6 switches, please help with the following questions :
1/ adding another switch into this stack will cause all switches in stack to reboot ? anything that I should be aware of such as different versions ?
2/ maximum switches in one stack should be ?
      Thanks for all help.

    Hi Duc,
If you are stacking 3750 switches you can have a max of 9 switches in one stack. The only thing you have to make sure before adding the new switch is that its IOS version should be exactly same as the IOS version of rest of the stack.
You dont have to worry about any reload of existing stack. Connect the stack cables to the new switch, power it up and it will be added to the existing stack.

    Hello,
I've have 2 x 3750G stacks with 3 switches in each and I need to add 2 more 3750Gs to it, can I still get these switches are the X range is out?
    Stack 1
    WS-C3750G-24T-S
    WS-C3750G-48TS-S
    WS-C3750G-24T-S

    WS-C3750G-24T-S
    All are running 12.2(53)SE C3750-IPBASE-M
Also when adding a new switch to the stack does the stack need to be relaoded?
    Thanks

You can add the 12-Ss to your stack, however beware these switches support (additional) SDM templates unique to them.  I.e. insure they use a "standard" SDM template.

    Hi All
I have one requirement where we need to add a switcher to a seeded Oracle SSHR page. I found the code in OAF developer guide to add the switcher but I need to add this to a seeded page(not the custom page). I can not add the "Switcher" using the personalization to this page.I would like to know the steps without changing the page definition. Is there any way you can substitute the Oracle page. Can any one give me the brief idea on this how can we do that.

ThanksOne of the best approach would be to create a switcher in table region in Jdev.
Now the second step is to create a Stack Layout Region or Flexible Content Layout region under flexible layout region & set its extend property through personalization.

  • Do I need to create ip address to another switch when i use stack?

    Good Day!
Please help me to answer this question in my title. I have 2 switches my old switch has configure ip address and i will use stack to my another switch the old one will be the primary and new switch is the secondary do i need to configure the ip address of the new 1 or  no need? i'm totally confuse on it. I hope you can help me regarding on this matter.Thank you.

    no Need.
    Here is the procedure:
Tips to Add a Switch as a Slave to the Stack
To add a switch, as a slave, to a stack, complete these steps:
Note: Make sure the switch that you add into the stack has the same IOS version as the switches in the stack. Refer to Catalyst 3750 Software Upgrade in a Stack Configuration with Use of the Command-Line Interface to upgrade the IOS in a catalyst 3750 switch.
Change the switch priority of the switch to be added to "1".switch stack-member-number priority new-priority-valueNote: This step is optional, but it will make sure that the switch has fewer chances to become a stackmaster in the future.
Power off the switch that is to be added.
Make sure that the stack is fully connected so that, when you connect the new switch, the stack will be at least in half connectivity and does not partition.
Connect the new switch to the stack with the StackWise ports.
Power on the newly added switch.
After the new switch comes up, issue the command show switch to verify stack membership.

  • 2960G Switch - connected to 4510R - not routing VLAN 40 to VLAN 11 ?

One of our 2960G switches failed, which we replaced but did not have a current config.
Now a user on VLAN 40 cannot access shared drives on VLAN 11 ?
I tried the IP ROUTING command on the 2960G but it is not available.
Other VLANs 30 and 50 can access the VLAN 11 shared drives - why not VLAN 40?
Is there some route blocking on the 4510 switch for the VLAN 40?

check following configuration to be correct:
    1- vlan 40: no shutdown
2- trunk port is formed in newly added switch'
3- vlan 40 is allowed on trunk port and not pruned
these configurations also must be running on 4510

  • Switches have a VTP Mode set to "server" can I set them to "Transparent" on a live network?

Currently our cisco 2960 switches at location "B" have a VTP Mode set to “server” I want to change this to “Transparent”
    They have VLAN1-default (active) 10.1.10.81; VLAN2-patron(active) 192.168.10.2; VLAN3-vlan0003(suspended) no ipaddress; VLAN4-vlan0004(suspended) 192.168.20.2
    I want to delete VLAN3 and VLAN4
The connection between loc "A" and "B" is set to “Static Access VLAN1” I need to change it to “Trunk Nonnegotiate Vlan all” for our vlan2 at loc "B" to work.
Reason for this change, when I added these switches to our network about 6 months ago it brought my network down, Knowing what I know now I think they wrote their settings to all the other switches that were vtp server switches on our network, VLAN3 and 4 were set to active at that time.

Switching from server to transparent vtp mode will not disrupt your network, the existing vlans will still be available, modifications however will need to be executed manually on the transparent mode switches.
If the interfaces between location A and B are configured as access ports, VTP will not work as it is only in effect on trunk links.
Before adding switches to an existing VTP domain, best practise is to configure transparent mode to set the revision number to 0. This way the VLAN database of existing switches will not be altered when connecting the switch.

  • Removing 4 out of 6 switches in a switch stack

    Hi all,
A very simple question for the group (I hope!) regarding 3750 switch stacks.
I've inherited a stack of 6 3750 switches.  I need to reduce this to two.  All of my active connections have been moved over to the remaining two switches I plan to keep.
Here is the output of the show switch
    DASW01_4STACK#sh switch
    Switch/Stack Mac Address : 001c.b1d9.cb80
                                               H/W   Current
Switch#  Role   Mac Address     Priority Version  State
    1       Member 0019.2f07.ab80     1      0       Ready
    *2       Master 001c.b1d9.cb80     1      0       Ready
    3       Member 001c.b1e1.5d80     1      0       Ready
    4       Member 001c.b1f6.4a80     1      0       Ready
    5       Member 0023.eabd.3500     1      0       Ready
    6       Member 001c.0ea1.be80     13     0       Ready
The two switches I want to keep are # 5 and #6.
As you can see, for some reason the master is not on switch 6 even though it has the highest priority.  All the switches are connected together with the proper redundant stack cables.
I've never worked with stacks before but would the actions be as simple as.
    1. Backup configs!
    2. Turn off switches 1 to 4 one at a time an allow for the stack to stabilize after each switch is powered down.
    3. Verify that switch 6 is now the master and everything still works.
    4. Turn off switch 5 & 6 and connect the stack cables of each switch to each other for redundancy (currently only one cable connects switch 5&6)
    5. Turn on switch 5 & 6
    Am I missing anything?
    Thank you!
    -Pete

Leo Laohoo wrote:"Power off the switch that is to be added."But Joseph you are not ADDING switches.  You are REMOVING switches from a stack and re-cabling.If one was adding a new switch, then yes, I recommend the new switch is to be powered OFF before connect the stacking cable.
    Leo, an excellent point!
Powering of the switch, when "adding" to the stack, no doubt gets it to initiate itself as a stack member.
Re-cabling existing stacks members, shouldn't need that, but the question then is whether the hardware (stack connections) were designed for making "hot" (i.e. both sides powered on) connections.  If they are, then you're correct, no need to power off switch 5.

  • Problem with the Z axis...blurred objects...what'd I miss?

    Howdy,
I've got some vector objects in Flash that start out real small--like 20-30 pixels square. When I change their position on the Z axis to 'zoom in' on them, the larger they get, the blurrier they get.
When I just tween the x/y size, and not move the z axis they look fine.
For example draw a 20x20 square on the stage.
Convert it to a movie clip so that I can 3D it.
Scale it up to 300 pixels.
    Looks fine.
Adjust the Z axis by 1.
    Blllluuuurrrrrrrrr.
Did I miss a setting somewhere or is this just a limitation that needs to be worked around?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Ted

Rothrock, Excellent link, thanks for that! Have some points.
    After reading it:
    crap.
Looks like I need to learn about hand coding the 3d effects, or using scaling instead and adding switch when I need the z....
Hmmm...that'll require a little mor coffee.

  • Is it better to use router port versus vlan member port?

    Hi CSC,
This is more of a philosophical or "best practices" question.
I have a Cisco 3550 at the home office. Connected to the 3550 is a number of branch offices by way of T1 circuits or VDSL modems. They all come to the home office, where we have a central internet connection and server farm for our entire organization.
Except for one special case branch office, we don't forsee the need for appearances of the  home office vlan at the branch office sites. In that case, we bring it  into a trunk port at the home office, and at the special case branch office we have a dell 3024  switch and tag some ports as vlan 18 (the home office) or vlan 27 (the  special case branch office).
We also do not forsee a need for the vlan from one branch office to appear at another branch office.
They are all (except for the special case mentioned above) currently configured something like this:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    description home office
    switchport access vlan 18
    switchport mode access
    interface FastEthernet0/2
description t1 to branch office 1
    switchport access vlan 19
    switchport mode access
    interface Vlan18
    description subnet for home office
    ip address 192.168.18.1 255.255.255.0
    interface Vlan19
description subnet for branch office 1
    ip address 192.168.19.1 255.255.255.0
Is it better, in terms of reduced network complexity or performance on my 3550, to do something like this instead?
That is, to make the interfaces router ports as opposed to vlan member ports?
Of course, if we ever DID need to have appearances of the home office vlan at branch office sites, or appearances of one branch office's vlan at another branch office, we would lose that flexibility.
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    description home office
    switchport access vlan 18
      switchport mode access
    interface FastEthernet0/2
description t1 to branch office 1
    ip address 192.168.19.1 255.255.255.0
    interface Vlan18
    description subnet for home office
    ip address 192.168.18.1 255.255.255.0
    no vlan 19

    Hello,
In my opinion there is no 100% right answer here. I think it depends also about network forecast. I'll try to add here some thoughts:
    - if you use trunk interfaces from home to branch and SVI for L3 connection, in terms of scalability is much easier to expand (you have now only one p2p L3 link, but in future you'll need another one; if the port is a trunk one, you just configure another SVI interface, allow vlan on trunk and your good to go)
    - trunk interfaces involve more configuration (L2 interface and SVI L3 interface)
    - if you add in the home office another switch to existing one, and for some reason you have misconfiguration in STP / VTP, then you can run into problems like loops, vlan database modification (e.g. VTP server mode and the new added switch has a higher revision number than existing one)
    - L3 physical interfaces are easier to configure and less complex, but in case you want to scale to additional p2p link will be harder
    - L3 configuration is easier to troubleshoot as you avoid the L2 complexity
    - in terms of packet exchange a L3 interface will exchange less packets than a L2 trunk with SVI (I'm talking here about control traffic, not user traffic)
    - with L2 trunk you can have other problems like if somebody is "smart enough" to add a new switch into the existing switch (if you have a switch there) at the branch location; imagine that the new switch due to misconfigurated STP became root bridge; you have a large STP domain.
As I said, there is no good or bad approach. You have to guide yourself about forecasts in your network. For example if you know that a branch location will not be extended in the next 2 years, then go ahead with L3 interface and that's it. On the other hands if you have doubts you can add for another location L2 trunk with SVI. You can mix this two solution to obtain the best results for your network characteristics.
    Cheers,
    Calin

  • Stretching the Z axis

Many 3D geological models and digital terrains are often viewed with an exaggerated z-axis to make subtle features more obvious.
Is is possible in Acrobat 3d to exaggerate the z-axis? It would be great if the end-user of the pdf could adjust the vertical exaggeration to different values.
    Thanks

  • Enable logging for FTP server in 10.8

Can't figure out how to enable 10.6-style logging for FTP server in 10.8. It used to be configurable via Server Admin allowing you to choose what to log and so on and the logs would go to /Library/Logs. Now I only see some irrelevant stuff in /var/log/system.log and I want to have all the transfers logged on this server. Tried setting parameters via serveradmin ftp:setting = param but it wouldn't appear in the list afterwards no matter what (just copied those off a working 10.6 server).
As a bonus, I can't figure out where the settings for logging are stored in a 10.6 server either. There's certainly not a mention of a file named FTP.transfer.log. Weird!

So to help anyone who finds themselves in the same boat and wants to enable ftpd logging on OSX 10.8 proper:
All operations assume root which is obtained by issuing 'sudo su' or just prefixing every command with 'sudo'.
First you edit the ftpd's launchd plist file:
    pico /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.a pple.ftpserver.plist
Find the section titled 'ProgramArguments'. Amend it so it looks like this:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
            <array>
                    <string>ftpd</string>
                    <string>-ll</string>
                    <string>-r</string>
                    <string>-n</string>
                    <string>-d</string>
                    <string>-c</string>
                    <string>/Library/Server/FTP/Config</string>
                    <string>-L</string>
                    <string>/var/log/ftpd.log</string>
            </array>
Second you edit /etc/asl.conf. This is necessary to make '-d' (debug) switch work since by default syslog won't log any debug-level messages at all.
    pico /etc/asl.conf
At the end of the file add the following:
    # ftpd verbose logging
    ? [= Facility ftp] [<= Level debug] file /var/log/ftpdv.log
Third important step is to reboot the server. ftpd's plist configuration is cached somewhere so restarting just the ftp server alone won't work.
Now what the added switches do:
-ll enables some logging (PUT and GET commands only despite what the man pages leads you to believe) to a file specified later by -L /path/to/file
-d enables debug mode which logs everything - including server's response. May be too verbose but at least you get a log of every single command issued to the server by your clients.

  • Extreme + Shared Disk through a NAT?

    Hi,
I've done a search on this topic but can't find a thread that answers my question - so I beg forgiveness if this has been asked and answered many times...
I've got an Extreme base station hosting a shared disk for a small business LAN. It works great.
This past weekend I put in a D-Link router into one of the offices to help reduce traffic noise (I've got an Ethernet-based interface for outboard automation and it was previously very laggy). The router does exactly what I need it to - except I can't use the Airport Disks menu to mount the Airport Disk.
The Disk shows up in the menu but returns a "Connection Failed" dialog box. I can connect to the Disk directly through Finder > Go > Connect to Server
I'm thinking some ports need to be opened up.
Anyone know where I can find that info?
Or perhaps something else is going on?
    Thanks.
    - patrick

Please describe exactly how the D-Link and AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) are connected.
    Hi Duane,
    Thanks for taking this on...
PowerMac & Control Surface (both static IP) -> D-Link (NOT DHCP, in the 10.0.0.1 range)
    then
DLink -> Netgear GigaE 20-port switch
    the AEBS goes:
    AEBS -> same Netgear switch
    then
Netgear Switch -> Firewall/Router (static IP in 192.168.1.1 range) -> DSL
Are you trying to go through the D-Link to get to the disk attached to the AEBS?
Yup. Punch through the D-Link to the AEBS.
Is the D-Link configured so that it's DHCP server is enabled or disabled?
    Disabled.

  • Why, oh why is setting up a WDS such a pain now?!?

I had a WDS of two AEBSs and an AExpress. I just added the new AEBS(n) to the flock, as the main base station, and I just can't seem to get them all talking. The AExpress seems to be the only one that likes it. For each base, I gave them all identical settings as far as the wireless tab:
    Participate in a WDS Network
Network name is the same for all 4
b/g compatible on the older three, n/b/g on the newer one
    Channel 3
WPA Personal all with the same password
All stations have the same password for configuration.
The only differences are of course in the WDS tab:
The three G stations are set as WDS remotes with the Airport ID of the N station as the Main WDS. The N station is set as WDS main, with all three Airport IDs of the G stations in the Remotes section.
When I look at the list of base stations, I see only the N, the Express, and one of the G-AEBSs.
    N station IP: 10.0.1.1
    AExpress IP: 10.0.1.2
    G-AEBS IP: 10.0.1.1 (??? should be 10.0.1.3)
    Any ideas?
This new admin software is soooooo frustrating!!

I have a question. When I was configuring my AE-N, I saw where you can configure the unit to participate in a WDS network, but did not see an option for it to be the WDS base like you can with the G unit. How did you do that?
I have learned that because a wireless device shows up as a 'base' in the configuration program does not mean it is truly a base station, just that it can be seen by the program.
Some experimentation has proven that the N is not a base but just another node on the network. The only way I got the N to be a true base was to set it to create a new network and then I could link my other wireless "bases" as nodes off of it.
