Adding text annotation in Preview.app

Preview in Leopard seems to be missing the ability to add text annotation to a pdf like in Tiger. Yeah, I know annotations can appear to the left side of the pdf, but I want them right on the document.
Anybody see how to add text directly to a pdf with Preview in Leopard?

Yes Preview is really messed up. I can't find anyway to print a copy of my pdf WITH annotations showing up. And the bookmark implementation is absolutely nuts.
In Acrobat you can bookmark pages in a document so that you can later
easily find your way around a very large document. In Preview, it
appears that they have added this feature but it works very
differently. The bookmarks are more akin to bookmarks in Safari.
They exist outside of the pdf and they stay in your bookmarks menu
even when another document is open. This is. . . really odd. As yet
I have not found a way to tell Preview to just show me the bookmarks
for the open document. After you have added 10 or 20 bookmarks to 2
or more documents, the bookmarks menu quickly becomes useless. Also,
b/c the bookmarks are not stored inside the .pdf, they do not transfer
to Acrobat if you mail the document to someone else.
Whoever worked on this project did not see to know much about .pdf documents or how they are used in the real world.

  • Yosemite crippled PDF text annotation with Preview.

In previous versions of preview, you used to be able to select 'textbox' markup tool and one-click create textboxes wherever you want on a pdf. Now, with the new Yosemite, selecting 'text' markup tool  creating a textbox in the middle of the screen, not where-ever you click. This cripples the productivity of annotating lecture slides during a lecture. I don't want my text box to always appear right in the middle of the page- I want to click to place it.
Also, why is it vertically center justified- who, EVER, used vertically center justified text rather than vertically top justified text?
    Are there anyways around this?

The link below provides instructions for annotating a pdf in Yosemite Preview, and additional links at the bottom of this page provide instructions for several other pdf editing capabilities:
Select and copy text in a PDF
Fill out and sign PDF forms
Add, delete, or move pages in a PDF
    Crop or rotate a PDF

  • Adding Text Annotations - Canvas Size?

I am looking to take screen shot and add annotations to them.
However, it is quite a bit of text so I was hoping to somehow put
my screenshot in the center and have some blank canvas around it to
add the text to. I cannot find the option anywhere to do this.
    Please help!

    Welcome to our community, Amy
There are a couple of ways I can think of to accomplish your
    goal.
    1. Create a new blank project sized as you want it. Paste the
image in the center and annotate as desired.
    2. If you already have a project, you might click Project
    > Resize Project and make the new project larger. Note that you
really shouldn't do this more than once as quality will suffer. If
you aren't sure, click File > Save As and save a throwaway copy
    first.

  • How do you make superscripts and mathematics in Preview's text annotation?

When adding text annotations that include scientific notations, how do you make superscripts, e.g. "3.2 × 10^{-23}"?
Searching Help for 'superscript' turns up nothing, suggesting the command does not exist, as it does under Baseline etc. in iWork. Please tell me this is not the case! If it is, has the situation been improved in the new operating system?
A related issue: I wish to include other mathematics -- is there a way to include mathematics similar to LaTeX? Might Preview incorporate using latex code in the future, so I can easily type "\exp{-\lambda t}" etc and have the math appear?
I'm adding text annotations to PDF lecture notes in Preview, basically filling in blanks the instructor has left so students will pay attention in class, and these annotations include superscripts; I wish to format properly.
    Thank you!

Once you have the circle shape displayed, long press on the border of the circle. Once it is highlighted, drag horizontally or vertically. This should allow you to distort the circle into an ellipse (or the square into a rectangle).
    Hope that helps,

  • Preview Text Annotation

It seems that the flow of adding text annotations to pdf files on preview has changed on Yosemite.  Instead of allowing the user to place a text box with the cursor and then begin editing, the behavior has been updated with placing the textbox automatically.  I can't seem to find any options to change this behavior to the way that it was back in OSX Mavericks, but does anyone know of a workaround?
    Thanks.

I miss how the annotations used to work in the previous version of Preview!
I'm definitely not a fan of how the text box and note defaults to the center of the page.  It's also very cumbersome having to continuously go to the toolbar to select text and note to get another text box or note to appear - and then having to move it from the center of the page to where I want it to be. I appreciated the older version where I was able to just click where I wanted the text box or note to appear and also being able to select text or note once and being able to just click with my cursor in multiple parts of the page to annotate.  This was a lifesaver taking notes in class - now I'm missing half my notes because I have to constantly move the boxes. Very frustrating!
I used to also be able to just use command + and command - to make my text smaller or bigger in the text box - now it just zooms in and out of the page.
Preview used to be my highly recommended choice for annotating - but it's not as efficient anymore.

  • Text annotation made in iOS not shown outside adobe app.

I opened a PDF attachment in the adobe reader app from an email message on iOS.
I added text annotations, and also a signature annotation then saved and emailed the document. When I received the email on my other account, I opened the attachment to find that the signature was still visible, however the text notes were not.
When I open the original modified document in the adobe app, all of my notes are still there.
    ammended:
I have discovered that if I open the annoted document I received in the adobe app, all notes are visible. the text notes appear to be missing if the dicument is opened in any other app or with the native iOS pdf quick view.

    lee.evans.81,
I can say that this is something we've considered and I  expect we'll implement in a future release. We've debated for some time on this issue because we've been afraid of the confusion it causes people. People who are more technical will immediately grasp "flatten for sharing". They'll also understand why their comments and forms are suddenly no longer editable by recipients. We've been afraid of confusing those who are less technical and we hate the idea of adding yet another option to the product. That said, we realize that  by NOT having this feature, we confuse a number of the same users AND we frustrate those people who understand the issue. Please watch for the feature in a future update =)

  • How to open image added to Pages doc in Preview app?

    Hello,
Anyone know hot to open images added to Pages in preview app on Mac? When I click on any image with right mouse button I have in menu these options - "Open in Pixelmator and Capture selection from screen".
I tried to make my own Automator service "Open img in Preview" and it work well in Finder and other apps (I selected it in Automator option to work in all apps) but this service is not show in Pages > Services.
Anyone know how to fix it or how to make this service visible in Pages? I tried to found "Open in Pixelmator" workflow on my Mac to rewriting or save my "Open img in Preview" workflof into same folder but no chance. In (Library > Services etc)
Thank you for you kind, sorry for my English
    Jan.S

I don't know how Pixelmator created their Service, but I suspect it involves programming that is beyond my abilities.
The following AppleScript will copy the selection in Pages and open a new preview window from the clipboard. It could be run as a Service with Automator. (It will also leave the image on the clipboard; if that is a problem, it could probably be modified, but I didn't get that sophisticated with it.)

  • Problems Editing Previous Annotations with Preview

    Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem with Preview and/or has any advice on how to fix it.
Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I've been having problems whenever I try to edit any of my text annotations in Preview. All of my notes for school are given as PDFs, so I have always used Preview and the textbox function to take notes during lecture. Before I upgraded, if I opened a previously-annotated document to study from and wanted to change something or add to the text, I would simply double-click the textbox and be able to fix it in 1 second.
Unfortunately, trying to make any changes to annotations has become a major process ever since switching to Mountain Lion.
Basically, as soon as I double-click any textbox to edit something I wrote at an earlier time, the box will shrink up to a single line that goes off the page and into oblivion. I have to resize the textbox over and over again just to fit it back on the page, which can be time-consuming and frustrating when paragraphs of text are suddenly condensed to one line that extends ten miles beyond the margins. It happens both with older documents from Lion and with the new documents I've only downloaded and annotated since upgrading to Mountain Lion. I thought maybe it was just my computer, but I tried it on a friend's Mac with Mountain Lion and had the same problem.
I have only used Preview for everything, so all of my annotations have been made using the same program. Also, it gives me no trouble if I try to edit as long as the document remains open; it only happens after I close out of a document and open it up again at a later time (even if it's immediately after closing it). Unfortunately, I can't keep 200+ documents open on the chance I might need to edit them at some point.
If anyone has any clue how I can stop this from happening in Preview or has a suggestion for another good PDF editor (aside from anything Adobe preferably), I would really appreciate it!!
Thank you very much in advance.

This is happening to me too! It's so frustrating especially since I've come to love Preview before upgrading to mountain lion. At first glace it seemed Preview had become more userfriendly with the textbox, line and circle drawers all separate icons now but the textboxes are such a pain. I know it only takes an extra 5 seconds or so, but by the time you add all the 5 seconds' up, it's heaps of time. It's especially hard if I'm listening to a lecture and I have to stop and fix my textboxes while the lecturer is still talking.
Sorry this isn't much of a solution, but I hope you don't feel alone dealing with this flaw!

  • Preview app: Add text annotation with left justify?

I'm using the Preview app to insert text into some PDF files. I can use the Annotate feature to create a text box in the area I need it and adjust the font, color, size, etc. The only thing I can't seem to do is set the justification to Left Justify. It will show text as center justify - anyone know how to change this?

I can find out what the defaults are with:
    defaults read com.apple.preview
There are many properties but a TextAligment property is not one of them.
I tried below but they do not work.
    defaults write com.apple.preview NSTextAlignment 0
    defaults write com.apple.preview PVAnnotationTextAlignment 0
    NB: 0 means left alignment
    Any idea?
Maybe Apple has to create an text alignment feature for the GUI or provide the property that we can set it from Terminal.

  • Preview.App does not find text in pure text pdf works in other PDF viewers

Hi I am using reportlab an open source python based pdf generating package to generate pdf reports.
The generated pdfs are searchable using Adobe acrobat and Google -Gmails built in pdf viewer . However in Preview.App the text seems to be only recognized as individual characters . For eg the text "hello world" will not match hello or world , but typing just h into the search bar will show up matched text as "h el l o" . So although visibly the text appears as a single word , semantically the words just seem to be composed of one or two characters.
Only Preview.App seems to have a problem with the generated pdf. Adobe Acrobat ( Mac and Windows) , Google-Gmail pdf-view , Evince-Gnome-PDF viewer ( Linux) dont have any problem with finding the text in the PDF documents generated.
I have a thread in the reportlab user forum discussing the issue (see http://two.pairlist.net/pipermail/reportlab-users/2009-August/008643.html). ANd the problem definitely seems to be with Preview.App . The pdf (sample see example text in corner) is available at this url ( http://s3.amazonaws.com/code-itch/searchtext.pdf)
The app is targeted at scientist Mac users . And I want to have the pdf reports searchable and indexed by spotlight , so getting this working is very important for me.
    Your help is greatly appreciated
    Hari

The posts on the reportlab newsgroup suggest that
"> If the preview is actually rendering the pdf and then searching, the 0
degrees case should be searchable. If that's the way the search is happening
then it's no surprise that the search should fail if the rendered letters
    are at 90deg." -Robin Becker
Test cases show that search fails completely at rotations of 90 , succeed partially at rotations of 45, succeed fully at rotations of 0.
So , is there a way to prevent Preview from only searching the final rendered PDF. The pdf I am complaining about are searched fine in the many other PDF readers I tested that probably handle search differently.

  • Preview text annotation customization

I'm trying to change the following in preview text annotation:
    1) text & underline/strikethru colour
    2) font super-/sub-script
    3) line spacing
I've read posts here suggesting clicking ⌘T to get to font menu which does come up but does NOT show any of above as options.
Within ⌘T menu, the gears drop down button does allow bringing up the colour palatte and there is also radial button choices for super-/sub-scripts, BUT none of those actually changes anything.
    Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Why does Preview automatically resize the text box to cut off the last character of added text? How do I fix it?

Why does Preview automatically resize the text box to cut off the last character of added text? How do I fix it?
I use the Tools > Annotate > Add Text feature, and when I click away after adding text, it automatically changes the text box size such that the last letter -- or last word -- gets bumped off into an invisible line below it, forcing me to manually adjust every single text box. It is highly annoying when trying to complete PDF forms (e.g. job applications).
It appears to be a glitch, quite honestly, an error resulting from Apple's product design. Has it been fixed in the new operating system (for which they want $30)?
I would very much appreciate any help you can provide! Thank you for your time.

I have the same problem with lectures slides.
Furthermore, sometimes the text box, when doube-clicking, turns  the text into a one-liner. Causing the text box to sometimes get 3. times wider than the pdf itself.

By pressing [cmd + I] the Inspector opens up and clicking on the rightmost tab 'Annotations' you should be able find those Annotations again. I do this regularly to find the empty annotations I accidentally create while clicking through slides.

Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.8 and anything else that needs to be updated.  After the installations go to /Library/Preferences - trash the com.apple.Preview.plist file.  Repair permissions, restart your computer and empty the trash.  Your Preview issue should now be resolved.

  • How to change highlight color of PDF texts to the standard golden yellow on Preview app?

I use the Preview app to read my PDF books. I also read these same books on my iPad. When I read my books, I like to highlight the text. I'm used to highlight my text with the standard golden yellow on my iPad. When I use Preview, the only choice of yellow color I've found is a somewhat orange yellow that's called "yellow". Besides that, I see only 5 highlight options. Anyway, I'd like to highlight my text on Preview with the standard golden yellow, the same color that is available in almost all PDF editing apps. Anyway, how can I highlight my pdf texts with the standard golden yellow on the Mac Preview app?!

Here is a picture to show the difference between the standard golden yellow (above) and the mac preview called yellow (below - looks like orange to me).
Is there a way to highlight the pdf texts on Preview app in the golden yellow color, shown above?
