Adding Text to QuickTime Video

After some frustration, I finally figured out how to acceptably add text from a text file to a QuickTime [Player 7] video on a Mac (for purpose of captioning for deaf viewers), but I have a question and a problem.
Rundown:
Step 1, add the text: Text file must be plain .txt. Each return (paragraph) breaks the text (timing). Open your video in QuickTime Player 7. From the File menu, choose Open File and pick your text file. It will open as a movie. Command-A to select-all, command-C to copy. In your video, select all. From the Edit menu, choose Add To Selection & Scale. Your text will appear in a tiny black box at the top left.
Step 2, format size & position: Command-J opens Video Properties. Click on your Text Track. At the bottom, click on the Visual Settings tab. In the right box of the Scaled Size option, type something like 200. In the Offset portion, type something like 250 and 500. (I imagine how this looks will depend on the size and aspect-ratio of your video.)
Step 3, make transparent: In the left side, there is a drop-down menu for Transparency. Change it to Blend. Drag the percentage as you want.
Step 4 [optional], change size of black box: Uncheck 'Preserve Aspect Ratio'. Put in something like 700 and 250 for a wide short box. (However, this squashes the text a bit... maybe there's a better way to do this?)
Question:
Can I change color and font?
Problem:
Apostrophes render to [,Äô] minus brackets. How can I keep my apostrophes as apostrophes? (Simple fix = remove apostrophes, but I would rather not, as it is not as easy to read.)
Thanks much,
~Ignolopi

Thanks for the link to the Apple info doc, that was helpful.
I gave in and tried it with all the desciptors, they do give a lot more control.
So for those who want to know: to start, open your .txt file with QuickTime Player 7. Then choose Export and set it to Text to Text. That will add in the basic descriptors, which you can then edit with TextEdit.
Here's what my text file looked like (shortened):
{QTtext}{font:Geneva}{plain}{size:20}{textColor: 65535, 65535, 65535}{backColor: 0, 0, 0}{justify:center}{timeScale:30}{textBox:200, 200, 40, 300}{width:700}{height:130}{timeStamps:absolute}{language:0}{textEncoding:0}
[00:00:02.00]
Hello! Let's learn how to... and so forth...
[00:06:04.00]
On the left side...and so forth....
[00:06:15.00]
-end
It's not too hard to set up the text file. To get the timing, I just watched the video and paused when I wanted the text to change, and marked the time in the text file.
To add the text file to the movie, you open it with QuickTime, select all and copy, then in the movie Add To Selection & Scale. It will position the text box according to what is specified in the text file, and change the text according to the time markers.
So, though tedious, it seemed to be doing things right... up until I finished. Then I had 3 problems:
1. The timing, which had been spot-on (because of the desciptors), went off. i.e. in the first part of the project, if that text was supposed to go at 00:03:20.00 it went at that point; then later in the project if it was supposed to go at 00:05:30.00 it would actually come on 2 seconds later. Not sure why.
2. There was a descriptor for making the text go away, but that didn't work. I tried {doNotDisplay:off} and {doNotDisplay:on} but couldn't get either to do anything. (I wanted the text to disappear for the last 5 seconds of video.)
3. Then I tried to save the project... and the saved project, or exported project, or whatever, had no text. There was a text box, but no text. (I did try saving as self-contained.) If I opened the movie in QuickTime Player 7 it would have the text. But in QuickTime Player 10 or QuickLook or after converting the project there would only be the box, no text.
I'd like to know how to fix these problems... but I already moved on and am creating the text track in LiveType to add to my project. Once you set up a project with LiveType all you have to do is get the timing right, which is no more than you have to do in QuickTime using the desciptors in the text file. (If LiveType is an option for you.)
Thanks,
~Ignolopi

  • ***Editing video: Help adding text to my video! Gamut-like problem***

Hi, I'm using the Photoshop CS6 free trial and I'm having trouble adding text to my video. I select the Text tool on the left side of the screen and when I expand the box to add text, it automatically changes my video to a gamut-like screen. I can still add text but the screen doesn't change back to my video. I don't know what I can do to fix this problem. I already tried turning off the gamut warning but it doesn't fix the problem.
    Thank you!!

You need to create a separate video track for the text overlay. You are simply trying to type in soem existing stuff and it invalidates your existing video.

  • Adding text to a video

I have been looking and looking to find an explanation of how to add text to a video - and to decide form when and till when the text shall be shown.
Does such an explanation really not exist?

Text is added via a Title. There are several ways to invoke that function. Once can to to the Toolbar and choose Title>New Title, or from the Title "showcase," can choose to use, and modify a Title Template.
To have a Title, with Text, or even Images and Clip Art, above (superimposing) a Video Clip, just create/modify the Title, and place it above the desired Video Clip.
As PrE assumes that one wishes to create and place a Title, at the location of the CTI (Current Time Indicator/Playhead), I like to move the CTI to the end of the Timeline, create, and then modify the Title, and click+drag it to the desired location.
The modification of Title Templates, or the creation of a Title from scratch, is done in the Titler, a sub-application invoked from within PrE.
    Good luck,

  • Subtitles and adding text to a video

Hello- I just started using Final Cut Express 4.0
Is it possible to add subtitles?
Is it also possible to add information as someone is talking, like their name?
    If so how? Thank you!!!!

Open the Help Manual and go to page 869 where you will find a very short chapter describing titling and how to do it.

  • HT3459 Why is my added text disappearing when transferring a quicktime video from my Mac to my iPad 2?

I have a .mov file.  (Quicktime video - edited in Quicktime Pro)  I transferred it to another computer, via it's public folder, so it would be on the computer where my itunes library is.  No problem.  I transferred it to my iPad through iTunes.  The video transferred and plays.  Soundtrack that I added is also intact.  Problem is, I have added text to the video and for some reason the text does not show up on the ipad (but does on my computer).  Any suggestions?
    Your help is greatly appreciated!

  • Video slows down after adding text

hello, would appreciate any pointers to solve my problem.....every time i add text to my video project, the video will play very slowly (jerks) until the text ends.
this never happened before as my previous projects ran smoothly even with transitions and text.
anything i can change to fix this? i have not installed any new apps, now notice any slow down of any other application that i use.
    thanks.

I also experienced the same problem, regardless of long or short movies... I'm sure you are also experiencing this issue on your preview screens (both small and full screen).
Here's what I did... I just went ahead and exported the movie to media browser and iTunes. I tried playing back on iTunes and it works perfectly. I also tried burning the movie onto DVD and it works perfectly.
Bottomline, just go ahead and export the movie, then burn it onto DVD or whatever your preference is, and you should be fine.
I'm working on another project now, and it's doing the same thing again. But, I'm not really worried anymore because I'm pretty sure it'll be alright once exported.

  • Having Trouble adding HREFTrack to new video

Hi! I am trying to add a HREFTrack to a quicktime movie and it is not working!
The file I am trying to add is formatted like this:
    {QTtext}{font:Geneva}{plain}{size:12}{textColor: 65535, 65535, 65535}{backColor: 0, 0, 0}{justify:center}{timeScale:30}{width:160}{height:48}{timeStamps:absolute}{lan guage:0}{textEncoding:0}
    [00:00:00.00]
    A<http://google.com>
    [00:00:04.15]
I have it listed as HREFTrack and not enabled in the properties window. I have even downloaded other videos with working HREFTracks and they do not work when I edit them. I do not want my HREFTrack to have a target-- I would like it to refresh the window I am currently in. I have tried to get this working in Firefox 2.0.017 and Safari 3.0.4, neither with any luck. The working videos I have downloaded were tried in the same browsers.
I have been creating my HREFTrack by pasting the text for the link into my movie at the point I want it to start, then exporting the text as text, re-opening it in QuickTime Pro to make necessary edits, and pasting it back into the correct location in the movie. Then I save the movie as a self-contained movie. The HREFTrack does not work in Quicktime standalone, or in either browser that I mentioned.
I am having a similar problem adding text links-- although the text links work fine in the QuickTime player standalone version, but not in either browser.
I am using TextEdit to edit the files, but I have also tried WordWrangler, with identical results.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank you!

Come on, guys! Someone must know the answer to this!? Or at least where might be a better place to seek assistance? Anyone? Bueller?

  • Export H264 pass-through movie with embedded text track QuickTime Pro 7 Windows?

Using QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows, I add a text track with closed captions to my H264 .mp4 videos.
The text track works great until I try to export it.  After I've added the text track, the text track is displayed as long as the track is selected to be active using the Movie Inspector track GUI.
My movies are encoded as H264 for cross-platform compatibility, and need to remain in this format.  The only way to save them in QuickTimePro 7 for Windows is to Export Movie to MPEG-4.  I select Pass-Through mode to retain the resolution and bandwidth parameters that I initially encoded the video with.
Unfortunately, after I export to MPEG-4, the caption track is lost.  It disappears.  When I open the newly exported MPEG-4 caption file, and select Movie Inspector, the caption track is missing.  Inspector only shows video and audio tracks.
If QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows correctly exported my text track with the video and audio tracks, then users would be able to view the closed captions upon playback in QuickTime Player by selecting View--> Show Closed Captioning (Ctrl+Alt+T).
Anyone been able to export to MPEG-4 pass-through movie with embedded text track QuickTime Pro 7 Windows?
    Thank you!

  • Problems adding Text track to .mov file

I am having a problem adding a text track to a quicktime file. I want to overlay text onto a PAL DV file. The original file size is 720 x 576 but when I add the text (as per the instructions in the QT Player Help) instead of having the text overlaid, it appears next to the Video image and gives me an image size of 1325 x 577. If I now export this as a "PAL DV" file, QT Player shows the whole 1325x577 frame whilst FCP accepts the file but shows only the video part of the frame.
I'm running QT 7.4.5 on a MacBook Pro with OS10.5.2. I have tried re-installing QT without success - this maybe because the Preferences seem to stick when upgrading/re-installing (?)
Any thoughts, help or, better still, a definitive answer to my problem would be most welcome.

Use the Movie Properties window to size your added text track to match the 720 width.
For viewing a DVD on a TV size it even smaller (700) and set an offset value of 10 pixels so your text doesn't get cut off during playback.

  • What can I do to improve a blurry quicktime video that was SMS'd to me it is a 1.24MB .mov file and I have QuicktimePro. It was taken on an Iphone but I am not sure with what software.

What can I do to improve a blurry Quicktime video that was SMS' texted to me? I think it was taken on an Iphone and it was sent to me as a 1.24MB .mov file and I have Quicktime Pro if that helps. I REALLY need to make this as clear as possible, the audio is good, video is blurry. Here is some additional data:

anything I can even try? Sender is off the grid? I don't need a production ready copy just viewable?
You can rescale (stretch) the size of the display but this will only make it blurier and/or introduce pixellation. When the file was encoded at a lower resolution much of the original data was thrown away to make the file smaller. This data is gone/missing and cannot be recreated from what is left. What you've got is all you have to work with. Any filters you can apply will require re-compressing the file again which will likely introduce more artifacts and increase the size of the file without really improving its overasll quality.

  • How do I get a quicktime video clips to go into my itunes?

Hi I have the latest version of itunes and quicktime ( Version 7.1.3) but I can't get itunes to play my quicktime video clips. I've tried dragging and importing them in but nothing happens. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi thanks for the help. But I was hoping that I wouldn't have to download or have to convert video files. I have a quicktime video in my itunes now but it was a while back when I added that I can't remember how too. Is there a easy way to do it or will I need to convert the Avi.files to something else? Thanks again for the help!

  • Added music track to video..entire screen is green and I cannot delete music track

I added music track to video, inadvertently dropped outside of clip now entire area outside of track is green and I can't remove or delete music.

i literally deleted the entire "Purchases" folder and restarted the phone. it recreated the folder (except without all our problem files) as soon as it powered back on.
no idea what downloads refers to - i tried this process with that folder and it didn't change anything or solve the prob.
as for the syncing of the playlist - i still don't think that would solve it. it seems like there is a discrepancy being created whenever a song is downloaded from the store, period. and as for deleting the stream files - no. I switched over to manual manage, deleted the files manually, but they simply recreated themselves as soon as i did another sync.
It was indeed the purchases folder that needed reconciling.
as a fun side note - i used phoneview to make a PDF of all my 60,000 texts from the previous 3 years, and then deleted them from my phone - saving myself like 10 gigs
realizing now this could all seem like i'm some rep for the phoneview app. i swear i'm not hahahaha

  • I embedded a quicktime video in keynote, but all I have is sound, no visual.  What am I missing?

After embedding a quicktime video in Keynote, all I have is sound, no video.  What am I missing?

Sorry, I understood you to say you had the whole CS6 suite, which includes Illustrator.
As far as finding out what the files are, sometimes you can look at them in a text editor to figure this out. See below; the, Creator Tool line. Not every software package makes it this easy, though.

  • Adding Text

Can anyone help me out on adding text to an image. I have followed the instructions in both books and videos on how to add text (using the text tool) and when I get to the point of typing text in, it doesn't go 'in'. The box that I assume it should show up in just stares at me - blank. What am I missing?

    David,
Also, there are basically two types of Text: Paragraph Text, where you first drag a Text Box, and what I'll call "Open Text," 'cause I'm having a brain cramp and cannot come up with the proper syntax. There are some differences in the behavior of the two. The manual (do they still ship those, or is F1 the only recourse nowadays?), should make the distinctions clear.
Also, when Text does not behave, as you think it should, look at your Layers Palette. Since about version 5, PS creates a Text Layer, when you start using the Text Tool. Make sure that you are in the correct Layer. If it doesn't seem to be working still, Dbl-click the icon with the T in the correct Layer. You should see your Text selected/highlighted. With the Text Tool, you can edit, or add to from there. This gets you on the correct Layer. If you first just click with the Text Tool, you are most likely creating a new Text Layer, which is not what you want, if you intend to edit, or add to existing Text. Always keep the Layers Palette open and in view. When things don't work, check to see just which Layer is active. That is NOT just for Text, but for almost everything in PS.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes. I also like the "Classroom in a Book" series from Adobe Press. They step you though many aspects of PS in little "projects." They are fun, expose you to things that you might not find for a bit, and are highly informative.

  • How many Quicktime videos can be place on an IWeb page?

I'm having problems placing more than two Quicktime videos on a page at a time. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks

You really don't want more than one "movie" on a page for this reason:
Each file will download when the page is opened. This waste bandwidth (you pay for it) and wastes the time of your visitors.
One little neat way to have hundreds (thousands if you wanted) of QuickTime formatted files served from your page would be to use QuickTime Media Link files (.qtl). These are text based files that really point to another QuickTime file stored on your server.
They can be made from any app that exports to QuickTime formats.
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/Tiny_Movie.qtl
One of mine as an example.
No wasted bandwidth and extra features in your file to boot!
