Adding text to smart builds

I am using the Smart Builds feature adding 40 photos playing to a song. I'd like to add text to each photo in the Smart Build, but when I add a text box, it puts the same text on every photo. Is there anyway to add separate text to each photo in the Smart Build drawer? If not, this seems to be a glaring error. Who wants the same text on every photo in the build?

Roger, try this....
Select your smart build on screen - then go into the build section of the keynote inspector, proceed to the actions menu, (this is where your smart build can be edited.)
You can flag a box in there "set separate timings for elements" this separates your smart build. then add text boxes on your slide with your info and using the build in and build outs, time the text boxes to correspond to your smart builds images.
hope this makes sense, it is a bit fiddly, but it is a way around your problem. good luck with it.

Synchronizing text with smart build

Hello,
In my presentation I have several smart builds with images in them. Is there a way to add captions to the smart build so that they'd be synchronized with it? I want specific captions to appear alongside specific images. Is this possible?

The simplest way to do this would be to group the caption text with an image, and then place that grouped object into a smart build. In this way, you can put the caption directly with the image. Note that the caption does not have to even be on the image -- it can be below it or above it or beside it, and it will show up correctly, with transparency where transparency should be.
If you want to use a separate build for the captions, you can set the timings for each stage of a smart build separately (check the Set Separate Timings for Elements option in the Build Inspector). Once you've done this, you can intersperse other builds with the smart build stages by interleaving them in the Build Order drawer (revealed by clicking the More Options button).

Adding Text to Turntable Smart Build

Can anyone help me with adding the "turntable" effect in Smart build? I'm trying to add text as a header to each photo I add in the smart build, so that it moves with the picture, but I can't do it. Is there something I'm missing?

If the photo is grouped with a text box, you can paste this grouped image into the Smart Build to produce the effect you want.
Drag the photo onto the slide, add a text box with the header text you want, group that box with the image, and then copy and paste that image into the spot in the Smart Build.

Using Smart Build with Text of a Title

I’m brand new to Keynote. I have successfully put in text for a title where the words of the title are in separate text boxes and move into a straight mid line. I tried to put a smart build of a sunrise in the background, but for some reason I could only have success seeing the text if I limited the sunrise to one pictures with the text moving onto the screen and aligning one at a time.
Any suggestions?

1. Create your titles with build in/out and move action build(s).
2. Click the Smart Build.
3. In the Build Inspector, click the "More Options" button and it will reveal a drawer.
4. Click on the 1st line in the drawer.
5. Click the "Set separate timings for elements".
Now you can reorder the animations so the text builds in, moves and out between stages of the Smart Build. There are options at the bottom of the drawer if you want stuff to happen on a click, with or after.

Smart Build Bug? Reflections/Shadows missing from newly added graphics

So, you create a smart build - I have seen this with both dissolve and turntable - with say 5 images in it. You apply a shadow and reflection. I know, overused, but that's for a different forum.
You then add a new graphic to the build - anywhere. That graphic will not have reflection or shadow, even though the inspector says it does.
The work around that works but is annoying is to select the smart build, remove the reflection and shadow and then add it back. All the images now have the reflection.
This is keynote 4.01

I just tried the same thing and it does appear to be a bug. I was thinking initially that Keynote was allowing you to set them up individually, but, nope. Be sure to send feedback!

Will Effects Builds-Smart Builds work on Text exclusively-without having an image on the slide?

I write poems and want to put a poem on a slide and animate the text to "sparkle,revolve,shimmer."..etc. Can I do this with Text alone on a slide ?

How do you add text to a smart album photo? Also, when syncing to my iphone, I want the text to appear. I am building a tropical plant field guide.

iPhoto has no capability of adding text onto an image. For that you'll need a 3rd party image editor setup as the external editor in iPhoto.

I'm guessing on what you are trying to do, to some extent, but see if this helps. Your photograph will have a horizon, and perspective. For instance, if there are any buildings in the image, lines drawn through the top and bottom edges of the building, and extended to the horizon, will always intersect at the same point. If you lay down some guides as shown in this illustration, and overlay some perspective lines with a 1 pixel line, then use the resulting box to Free transform the letter S to.
It is _much_ easier if you Rasterize the text layer, because that will cause the Free Transform bounding box and handles, to fit tightly around the text. Otherwise the bounding box will be larger than the text to include descenders and risers for the font used.
So with guides and guide lines in place, and the text rasterized, use Free Transform, and hold down the Ctrl (Cmd) key will dragging the corner handles to the intersect points.
In the illustration I have made a nice simple concentric perspective, but that probably won't be the case in your image. But if you use clues from the image, you will be able to work out its true perspective. In fact I rarely resort to using guides, and just do it by eye.
A little tip when doing this is to make the object a Smart Object before using Free Transform. The reason is if you decide to tweak the perspective and use FT a second time, with an SO layer the handles will still be in the corners. A normal layer will now have the FT handles square to the document edges, which makes it much more difficult to refine the shape.

Smart builds in Keynote 6.0?

I opened presentations previously built with Keynote 5.3 in Keynote 6.0 to find that all my smart builds have disappeared!
The Action "Revolve" where you can have multiple objects revolve has disappeared.
I find it odd that Apple is removing features from a product - for the sake of interworking with the IOS versions.
This is a serious problem imho, there is no warning by Apple that there are some key keatures of Keynote 5.3 that are not longer supported.
I am using these animations quite often and they get a lot of praise from the audience, so I need to go back to Keynote 5.3 I guess.
It left me with a major problem of having to re-build my slides again in 5.3 from backup files because once you close Keynote 6.0 it saves the opened file in a new format which cannot be opened by 5.3 anymore.

In ecc 6.0, create rowline in the main area or where ever u want (say header or footer). This row itself contains the no. of columns u specified in that row, so u can place ur text element directly under the appropriate column.
Like this u can create 'n' no. of rowlines according to ur need.

Smart builds

The fact that smart builds was dropped has left me wondeirng about the new keynote 'upgrade'. It seems if my older Keynote presentations are about as equally compatible with powerpoint as they are with the newest version of Keynote, something has gone seriously wrong. With any upgrade, I should be able to open and successful present old documents. The upgrade show empower new features, not completely eliminate old important, innovative ones. A serious step back with the 'upgrade', seeing as most of the added features are generally not for professional consumption.

You may then need to simulate a single Smart Build by creating multiple separate Smart Builds, each of which is just a single step in the process. Export each of these as separate movies, putting them on separate slides. Then have each movie run when the new slide appears in the PowerPoint presentation.

Photoshop CC : Workspace Flashing Black When Inserting Guides & Completely Black When Adding Text

I recently bought Photoshop CC (2 Days Ago) and shortly after installing I jumped onto Photoshop CC and started to set up the prefferences for my personal use and started to just do some basic stuff and see whats new in CC. when inserting Guides & adding Text the workspace started to flash/stay BLACK. I don't know whats going on but my specs are better than the minimum requirements? Any idea whats going on? Operating System : Windows 8.1

I saved a PDF doc in adobe and then added text to the form. But every time I try an email it it only sends the original form without text. Once I've changed a doc in Adobe, how can I save it so that I'm able to use it with added text and notes? Also, I'm using a new iPad.

If you are using those apps or websites, they are likely viewing the PDF using iOS' built in PDF previewing, which will not show annotations and markup to the PDF. We have informed Apple of this issue, but do not have any insight into whether or when they will fix it.
Regarding the qustion about importing pictures, Adobe Reader does not provide any capabilities to import pictures into a PDF. To do this, you'll need to use Acrobat, available on your desktop computer.

How can I remove the underline from added text for tracing edits

We have a lot of content that includes underscores and when we use the track text edit feature added text is green and underlined. How can I change the properties of the added text to not be underlined?

Starting with FM11, you could specify a custom colour to be used for track changes, but the styles (underline, strikethrough) are still hardwired.
Even if you try to make the changes to the rack text edit conditions in a MIF file, they will get overwritten as the MIF is interpreted when opened by FM.

New bug introduced with Keynote 5.2 - Set timing and order of each build has stopped working properly on Smart Builds

Hi there,
We're heavy users of Keynote and have noticed a new bug has recently been introduced into something that was stable. I think it has emerged in Keynote 5.2, could have been Keynote 5.1 also.
It's in the area of Set Timing and Order of each build when used on a Smartbuild. You can no longer set the Start Build field for each instance within the Smart build when the instances are interspersed between other items. The Start build field is just blank and unselectable.
To see this :
1. Create a bullet point list with 4 lines
2. Set build to Appear
3. Set "Set Timing and Order of each Build" to on
4. Create a Smart Build - set to flip
5. On the Smart Build Set "Set Timing and Order of each Build" to on
5. re-order the items in your Build Order so that they alternate between the bullet point and the smart build flip
At this point, you used to be able to set the bullets so that they Started on Click and then set the smart builds to Start with previous. This gave you a nice and very useful effect where you could click to reveal a bullet point and at the same time flip in a corresponding image. We've used this loads of times in our company presentations.
With a recent keynote update ( I think 5.2 maybe, could have been 5.1) this functinality has been lost. have tried it on Lion and Mountain Lion and it's not an OS issue, its a Keynote issue.
Could anyone from Apple acknowledge that they know the issue and suggest if it will get fixed? Right now we're hunting round for an old Keynote 9 DVD so we can install a pre build 5.2 version.

I've noticed the bug you describe and to me it's very irritating.
I also found some differences in the build menu between the last release and the previous one, and between the Mac OS X and iOS versions. For instance, the blast build doesn't exist anymore in Keynote 5.2 but it's still in the version for iOS 6.
What is your experience about?
I currently use OX Lion.
