Adding third party video card to P700 - no power connectors? New Power Supply Question...

Hello,
I have a new P700 30A90012US with a 650W PSU and that didn't come with a video card. I am planning to use it as a DAW and for occasional gaming via a dual boot.
I wanted to put in a third party video card like a nVidea 970 but there aren't ANY connectors for video cards that I can find inside. The monitor I have is a 3440x1440 monitor. I have ordered a second 2609 Processor and RAM from Lenovo and have the following questions:
Once I install the second processor, how much wattage for a video card is available to me?
I understand that the 3rd party video card isn't supported but how do I attach power to it?
If it is required that I have to replace the 650 power supply with an 850, does it come with the required cable? I only see a 4 pin connector on the mobo that is unused (and I believe it is for additional hdd)
I tried searching but I am at a loss.
Thanks,

Your config isn't really power hungry (and the 85W CPUs help a lot).  Though technically outside of the official spec, I think you could easily go to a 225W card for graphics if you had the connectors available to support it.  I'll double check the current when I get a chance, but it's probably really low risk if you want to convert your single 6-pin connector to dual 6-pin or a single 8-pin (via a dongle) to get to 225W TDP if you wanted to.
The PSU design is very modular, but unfortunately it's the aux power cable drops that kept it from being an easy field upgradable part.  I always recommend that people buy the larger PSU if they ever think they'll be doing any upgrades in the future just to make sure they are covered.
And like I said if you're comfortable working inside the system, it's not impossible to upgrade that cable drop on your own if you want to go up to the 850W.  You'd have to get the cable and PSU, but after that it would require removing the motherboard and PSU, cutting some cable ties and routing the new cable, then getting everything routed correctly such that the motherboard reinstalls cleanly.

  • ThinkStation P700 - adding a third-party video card: supplementary power connectors?

    Hi all,
I have recently purchased a ThinkStation P700 to replace my ageing setup and hopefully serve me for many years to come - It has not yet arrived (that's a different story altogether...).
I have a bit of a dillema regarding the video card I purchased for it. For my work I need CPU, much less so GPU, and especially not a Quadro. So for pure pleasure I added a GeForce GTX Titan Black (yes, I know that Lenovo will will not provide support for stability issues caused by this, etc, etc). I have the card already - here's my problem:
The card uses external power - it has one 8-pin and one 6-pin PCIe power connector on top of the board. With adapters I can get this to three 6-pin or multiple Molex, etc. The motherboard and the PSU in the P700 however, are so well designed and modular, that they almost seem too modular... I looked up the motherboard layout in the manual, and there are only 4-pin (?) connectors on the board, which are supposedly meant to be used with video cards. After a very long session with google it seems that hardly anyone has even heard of 4-pin power connectors for PCIe. Looking at pictures of the chassis available online, everything seems completely self-contained - the PSU slots into the board, and there are no free-hanging cables available whatsoever - am I right? Also pictures showing two full-size video cards installed, do not show power cables at all - maybe they're just cute marketing pics - the Quadros have power ports at the back - I simply can't see power cables in those pics, and the motherboard sockets are free. Obviously I know that the 4-pin, 6-pin and 8-pin are only combinations of 12V rails and ground.
    So my questions are:
    - are there any 6-pin or 8-pin connectors or Molex available anywhere at all?
    - is there a spare part in the form of a 4-pin to 6-pin adapter? Is it perhaps bundled with the P700?
    - how are the Lenovo-integrated video cards powered - surely with how thin the PCIE tracks are, they can't be powered only from the board - or can they?
    - is this perhaps a joke on me / catch to make sure I only buy the pre-approved cards?
    Thank you in advance.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
Now THAT was lots of info, and more. Much appreciated.
    1. Power connectors - Indeed, Titan (Black) is 8 + 6 - so I'm happy with the info I got from you guys so far.
    2. Specs listing dual K6000 - this site (looks like a Lenovo site?): http://thinkstation-specs.com/thinkstation-p700/ - there's a PDF with the same info there. This even says 3 x K6000 in SLI. I mean the board physically has three long slots, and three of those 4-pin ports that according to the manual have something to do with power - but I can't see this working. The psref site says K6000 (one) but the online shop will not let you configure the P700 with one - unless some other options preclude it and that's why I didn't see it.
    3. CPU - I have no need for dual CPUs right now so I went for a single E5-1650v3 - I bought the P700 not P500 just so that I have an upgrade option, I may not use the second socket in the end but who knows.
    4. Yes, I got the 9364-8i card (plus supercap module) - is this a Lenovo-specific model? Hard to find anything about it online - or is it just new? The blind mate assemblies are good news. So not much different to server-type drive caddies in the end - minus hot swap maybe.
    5. Regarding the drives - are the internal (not front - the bottom ones) drive bays also referred to as FLEX bays? Theye are four of them and I intend to use four drives only ( 2x 240G SSD RAID 1 pre-installed + 2 x 4TB RAID 1 mine) - so why do I need to stick two drives into one tray - or is this just if I wanted to maximise the number of drives usable? The 4TB drives are HGST UltraStar 7k4000 - standard, full-thickness 3.5". The SSDs are Lenovo's whatever - the "240G SSD" option - Intel I think, looking at psref.
    6. Shipping delays - see, this is the sort of concrete info I was looking for and I'm immensely thankful for this.
The rest is a rant/vent someone from Lenovo should read.
So - in the meantime I started giving Lenovo UK & Ireland some abuse over Twitter (sorry, but well deserved IMO) - name and shame does wonders in the age of social media.
Had I been told something along the lines of "sorry, new product, build issues, we're working on it", I would have (reluctantly) shut up and waited for my turn. I'm an engineer myself, supporting systems where minutes of downtime cost hundreds of thousands, and working with vendors a lot. Delays and issues happen, when an engineer tells me there's an issue and I don't sense B/S, I accept it.
If the product is still wet, don't open it for orders or say it's pre-order. I can see that in the US the P700 is still "coming soon", in the UK it suddenly became available so I ordered it.
However, the process here is broken: Lenovo UKI (is it the same in the US?) uses DigitalRiver as the shop/shipping/support front end. That's all well and good, outsourcing does work in some cases. BUT there's no way to view the estimated shipping dates - only customer support can retrieve them from Lenovo (why can't they just make this info available online - to avoid people over-relying on it?)
The Customer Support cannot tell me anything. The only thing they can do is pull an estimated shipping date out of some magic 8-ball. Two weeks pass since order, I ask CS, they give me Dec 18th shipping date. I call them on the 22nd, on the call with me they tell me it's now magically the 22nd. Come on...
Throughout all this time I got zero notifications about anything happening with the order, as far as the Lenovo site is concerned, it's "in process" since Nov 29. Do you know that when I order a Domino's pizza from round the corner, I get a live animated progress screen from order through assembly, baking, QA and delivery?
Yes, it costs money and yes, businesses pushing more consumer grade disposable **bleep** than anything else, don't care about customer loyalty anymore, but why don't you at least show the high-end customers some respect - why can't you implement a tracking process for custom builds, or at least keep people updated?
I specifically chose the Lenovo P-series because I have no doubt that they are the best on the market. Dell don't offer the same storage options and customisation options. HP are not up there either. Fujitsu Siemens make great machines with straightforward hinged doors and drive bays behind them, but they have a **bleep** distribution model i.e. via specialised resellers only, making it near-impossible for a regular mortal to buy - at least in the UK. So the sad thing here is that I will most likely just wait and you'll still get my money - but if the official channels keep treating me like an idiot, I am very tempted to take my $4k somewhere else.

  • Third party RAID card. . .

Greetings. 3 questions (with by-questions added).
    1. I have "read" that you can't use third-party RAID cards with apple HDD or Apple RAID with third-party HDD because of formatting from Apple. Is this true?
    a) I've also "read" that there aren't any third-party RAID cards available for the "new" 2009> Mac Pros. Is this true
    b) If question 'a' is false and it IS possible to install or "adapt" a third-party RAID card to the Pro, how would one go about it?
    2. If I kept the OS running off of the 640GB HDD from apple, would I have to also add ONLY apple HDD?
    3. Is it true that software RAID can only do RAID0 and 1? I'm planning on adding 2x 500GB drives for my video editing needs, which should be plenty to start out with; the answer to the question will help allow me to plan for when I should start saving for a RAID card.
Of course, I plan on playing and exploring the "RAID world" before actually working with it, but these questions still needed answering.
Thanks. Links are welcome if they help me understand your answers to my questions!

If you only want a Video editing striped RAID pair and a System drive:
    a) You do not need the frighteningly expensive RAID card with its 72-hour backup battery.
    b) Apple software RAID (built into Disk Utility) is perfectly adequate for most uses. There is other software you can buy, and it also works just fine.
    c) You can use whatever SATA drives please you, but "Green" drives are for economy, not performance.
    d) You do not need to keep that 640GB as your System Drive. You can replace it with a smaller drive and use the 640GB as half the RAID, if you wish.

    HI Ayodeji,
    Thank you for valuable update.
    1. On B2B solution :-
    a) Are Third party device needs to register on CUCM or not. What the B2B solution says because that device not register on CUCM?
    b) Which connectivity i need Internet and SIP or Only Internet?
    c) On other site are they need SIP connectivity or Internet ?
    2. Sip trunk between the two clusters are we need SIP connectivity on both site or need only reachability? On this scenario are we need VOICE RT because we have different data connectivity router for both site.
Can You refer any CVD guide of implementation ..

  • Third party Wireless Card on a Power Mac G5, bipro 1.8 GHz

Does anyone has a definite answer whether or not a TrendNet 403 PI+ PCI card would work or not along with my G5 bipro 1.8 Ghz (beginning 05- OS 10.3.9) ?
I have the same card installed on my B&W, which is recognized as an airport extreme card.
Installed into the G5, it is recognized by the hardware :
System Profiler says on Airport Card "Wireless Card Type : Third Party Wireless Card", but "Current Wireless Network : wireless network not available"
I have the 5 bars on airport icon, but they are grey
When I go to Other network and give the name of my network, it keep saying : "There was an error joining the Airport network".
Any clue why it works into my W&B (G4- 400 Mhz) and not into the G5 ?
    Thank's for any advice

See Luc's new thread "AirPort Extreme Driver Update did not solve my problem".

  • Does adding third party ram void the warranty?

Will adding third party RAM, like Crucial, void the original Apple warranty or Apple Care warranty extension? Does the latency rate matter? Am adding a second stick of 512 mb ram to new iMac G5 (rev B actually). Is this ram ok for my iMac rev B as a second stick?
"Crucial 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model CT6464Z40B"

Adding third-party RAM to your machine won't void the warranty unless you damage the machine during the installation. That module matches the specifications your iMac calls for.

  • Help With Third Party Wireless Cards

Hello, I am needing some help with third party wireless cards. I have purchased and installed the Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card into my G4. From what ive seen on the discussions page here, this card is known to work with the G4s in place of the more expensive Airport Extreme card. The only problem is that my G4 doesnt even recognize that the card is in the PCI slot. Ive tryed the other PCI slots and still nothing. Previously, i have tried using a belkin and a d-link card that have been known to work in the G4s as well, and had the same problem. I am 100% sure that the card is seated correctly, and cant think of any other reason why it shouldnt detect that something is in the slot. If anyone can inform me what im doing wrong, or has any info on how to get it working, that would be great. Thanks for your time,
    ~Jared
Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   2 gb ram, 200 gb hd, dual display

Yes, i run Digidesigns audio editing program called Protools on my Mac. It uses a PCI card to import mic/line audio signals into the program from the hardware interface. I tried moving the Digidesign card and putting the wireless card in the same slot, and still nothing, although the Digidesign card works fine in the other slots. Each time i moved the Digidesign card, it showed up in the different slots, although the ones that were open did not show up at all. Only the PCI slots that are in use show up in ASP on my machine. I have the FW-800 version of the G4, so im not sure if that makes any difference. I have never erased the PRAM before, would you be able to give me directions on how to do that? Thanks a ton for your help. =)

  • Third-party networking card in 17" PowerBook?

I have a 1.67MHz 17" G4 with Airport connection problems. I want to test it by installing a third-party wireless card to see if it's the built-in Airport or the network.
What will happen if I insert this card? Will it override the built-in Airport? Will it cause problems? The card is a BuffaloTech g54 and I am using it in my 867MHz G4 since Apple didn't make an Airport Extreme card for my model [boo hiss].

When testing third party wireless cards then you should disable built in airport as some devices can be damaged if they are in too closer proximity to another wireless device.
The card is a BuffaloTech g54 and I am using it in my 867MHz G4 since Apple didn't make an Airport Extreme card for my model [boo hiss].
Apple's extreme cards are mini agp cards and there is no physical way they could be fitted to your 867mhz G4 anyway.

  • Third Party WiFi Card

Hello - I've recently purchased leopard and put it on one computer - it's quite nice and everything worked almost immediately, but I'm very reluctant to put it on my second computer, as the second one has a third party airport card - the driver which powers this 802.11g Proxim card is Orangware v3.3, who say that they will not be supporting Leopard. Does any one know of other drives that may work, or have they tested the Orangware driver? any info will be appreciated....

The Sonnet card can be used to connect to the same wireless networks as those you would be able to access with the AirPort card.

  • How to install third party plug-ins from photoshop elements 11 to new 13 in my PC win7?

how to install third party plug-ins from photoshop elements 11 to new 13 in my PC win7?
    Thank you.

    Hi ,
Your windows is 32 bit or 64 bit .
    If win 7 32 bit
Just copy the plugin from PSE 11 and paste it to PSE 13 plug-in folder.
    If win 7 64
PSE 11 and PSE 13 are installed as a 32 and 64 bit respectively , so you need to install plug-in again.
    Thanks,

  • Netboot via third party ethernet card

Since the onboard ethernet card on my PowerMac G5 has stopped working reliably, I purchased a Sonnet Presto Gigabit PCIe card. I've read that by default it's not possible to netboot from any ethernet other than the onboard adapters, but is there any way to netboot via a third party card, through some Open Firmware extension, or has anyone tried netbooting with the Sonnet card? (I haven't yet received it, it will be coming in a few days).

Eventually solved by copying Ethernet ip settings when it was hardwired to router into the PCI Slot 3 settings where the card is housed

  • NoClassDefFoundError after adding third-party jars... need help

Hello SDN! I'm strongly need your help.
I'm developing a WD Java application which contains followed DCs:
AppDC is a Web Dynpro which contains application-depended views, controllers, runnable WD app.
ExporterDC is a Web Dynpro DC with no applications, this is helper DC for export table data into Excel and other formats
MainDC is a Web Dynpro DC with no applications, this is a basis DC. This DC contains some common useful views and controllers which used by AppDC
JavaDC is a Java DC (not J2EE Server Component) which contains my own common helper classes
LibsDC is a External Library DC which contains third-party jars used by apps
J2eeDC is a J2EE Server Component Library DC which is just a wrapper for LibsDC
    These DCs has followed  dependencies:
LibsDC is Used DC for J2eeDC (both assemble and compile types) with Build-time dependency
J2eeDC is Used DC for JavaDC (defLib) with Build-time and Run-time dependencies
JavaDC is Used DC for ExporterDC, MainDC and AppDC (both assemble and compile types) with Build-time dependency
ExporterDC is Used DC for MainDC (both assemble and compile types) with Build-time dependency
MainDC is Used DC for AppDC (both assemble and compile types) with Build-time dependency
Build perform without errors. I can deploy build results of J2eeDC, ExporterDC, MainDC and AppDC. But when I call my application I get NoClassDefFoundError at row of ExporterDC where is the first call of class from JavaDC which has reference to classes from third-aprty jars.
Please note that I'm not using third-party jars in WD DCs, these jars used only in JavaDC.
I've read quite many threads and blogs but I can't to find solution.
P.S. I'm working with NW 7.0 SP 14, all DCs are local.
    Hell will be apriciated!
    Regards, Lev

    Hi!
    Thank you for reply!
Here are few jars in Entities for assembly PP and compile PP in ExtLibrary DC. In "properties" tab property "type" has value "Archive" for every of jar in Entity.
About blog - this blog about situation when Web Dynpro DC use third-party jar. But in my situation Web DC uses Java DC, there is no references to jars in code of WD DC. Only Java DC references to jars.

  • Adding third-party SSD drives to Xserve

Has anyone tried this? I would like to buy a new Xserve and migrate to 10.6, but since my application would benefit greatly from SSDs, I would like to buy build an Xserve with a SSD boot drive, and two SSD drives in RAID1. Since Apple doesn't offer SSDs as a drive bay option, has anyone here successfully done it on their own?
    ...Rene

Yes, I can't see a reason either why a third-party drive (e.g., http://www.plianttechnology.com/lightning_ls.php ) be used. I would just like to hear from someone who has actually done it on a the newer Nehalem Xserves. My application is very database bound (many small, random reads and writes), and I think it would benefit greatly from an SSD.

  • Adding third party tag libs some standard some not

    Hi,
I am coming from the Java side, BEA Weblogic, Tomcat, JRun etc.  I was coding using open source tags  i.e.  JSTL, Struts, Display Tag etc.
I have one question does anyone know if SAP plans on allowing us to allow third party tags, I have read some stuff on JSTL but nobody really has got it to work correctly.  And changing the TLD is not something I think should be done.  Also I am curious on the structure where would you stick the jar files like jstl.jar  I see the portal-inf/lib  Is this the same as web-inf/lib and gets picked up by the webserver?
Also if anyone has successfully imported any tags into there system.  Please respond back I would love to know
