Adding thumbnail "kills" movie playback!

This is the single wackiest bug I've personally encountered.
I have over 100 movies (from my own DVDs) that I have ripped and I stream them via my Apple TV. Worked great, except I gotthe idea I would like to have nice thumbnails for browsing. So, I started adding them. Well, so far, this process has "killed" 4 movies in my collection— rendering them unplayable.
I even changed the process, making sure to press "Play" PRIOR to adding the thumbnail, to ensure the movies did indeed play with no problem. So it is certainly NOT a codec issue. It's something that iTunes does when importing the thumbnail image. On the first 3 I have had this problem with, it's simply inconvenient— I'll have to re-rip. On the last, I have lost the movie, as the original DVD is unplayable scratched.
Any thoughts as to why this happens? Anyway to revive the movies in question?
Here's the message I get after this occurs (despite the movie playing before I imported the thumbnail with no problem at all):
The Movie Could Not Be Opened
An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.

Well, here we are in 2012 and I'm having the same problem! I tried adding a 'cover' to a movie file, in this case an mp4, iTunes freezes which resulted in a killed video file. it's damaged in every way: It won't play anymore and you can't change the meta data, like it's locked or something.
But this only occurs when I directly copied a picture from my webbrowser into iTunes. The thing is, how can I revert this, 'cause it's f**kin' anoying to download the same file again........
So I guess to prevent the freezing from happening: save the picture file in a folder on your Mac/PC and then open it from the files preferences in iTunes.

  • ITunes movie playback, audio and video not in sync after upgrade to Mountain Lion

After upgrading to Mountain Lion I have problems with iTunes movie playback, and the audio/video at times stalls/delays, or skips a few seconds, or even gets out of sync.  I feared this problem was isolated to my machine until I saw an article online: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57489874-263/sound-stuttering-after-mountai n-lion-installation/.  I have 2011 iMac 27" with 16G RAM and am running the latest iTunes and Mac OS X software, and shutting down extra programs doesn't help.  Please let me know of any solution.

I also have this problem, and some videos will no longer play in iTunes.
I get a message that this video is not compatible with this version of iTunes. I have to open the video in Quicktime to watch it.
Unacceptable! This hardware and software is too expensive to have these performance issues.

  • Movie playback issues

My movies are having playback issues again. Default settings are 44.1kHz  16bps  720p HD.
    Operating System: Windows 8
    Itunes Version 12.1.0
The issue is the sound goes in the beginning of each film. I have a computer which is two years old and yet there seems to be a recurring problem with movie playback.

I think it depends on which version of iTunes you are using. I had the same problem with digital copy movies when I loaded the 64bit version of iTunes 8.1, iTunes64setup.exe, on a Vista machine. Once I deleted that version and loaded the 32bit version of iTunes 8.1, iTunessetup.exe, I was able to view the movie in iTunes AND download it to my iTouch.

  • Apple TV 2 - Not synching correctly during movie playback

    Hi all,
Recently bought the new Apple TV and have set it up fine. During some movies playback I notice the picture starts to jerk and then the sound is about 1-2 seconds ahead of the picture. To rectify this I have to pause the video, then play. When I pause, I can see the video playing catchup to whichever point in the sound I paused it at.
Is anyone else having this issue? Or does anyone know what the cause of this issue is?
The movie plays fine on my iMac with no synching issues. Im assuming its because my iMac is running and using its processors at that given moment. Some of my movies are MKV files encoded to MP4 via Handbrake.
Some help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

It could well be because your Mac is heavy on resource usage running handbrake which will use as much CPU power as is available to do the job.
Having said that I've seen this occasionally with ATV1 and ATV2, and recently I've wondered if it's iTunes doing something else eg automatically downloading a subscription podcast, and effectively freezing to other processes like AppleTV streaming as it saves a podcast to disc.
The other obvious candidate is the network not quite keeping up with streaming demands and running slightly behind.
Try playback without Handbrake or other intensive processes running - does it behave better?

  • Movie playback madness....?

    Hi gang...
I want to create a .swf that is 1080p.
There are 6 .f4v movies (each 320 * 1080) playing at the same time...
Can flash player handle this?  I understand that flash player runs on the CPU and not the graphics card?   So do i just need to get a monster pc....
or is this movie playback madness...!

    Hi david...
    thanks foy your response...

My Apple TV stops and returns to main menu during movie playback and photo slide show via homesharing. I have a second Apple TV in another room that works fine.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Settings changing when adding to another movie

Each time I attach a new chapter (mini movie) PROJECT to the already existing main movie PROJECT the settings change. I have tried adding on the front with the new chapter as well as trying to add the main movie to the mini movie. Is there a way to lock all settings on a movie so when it is added to another movie the setting won't change oon either clip. The chapter movie is approximately 1 1/2 minutes long and the main clip is approximately 9 Minutes long. There are several transitions, and scrolls included in both clips.

Hi Luis, thanks for the reply. I first made a video approximately 8 minutes long. I used digitized video, still images, sound tracks, titles and numerous transitions between the clips. I then opened a new project and made a movie of one of the last letters sent home by the veteran prior to his death. I also used transitions, movie clips, titles and various images. So far I have three of these last letters completed. I was able to copy and pasted two of the letter clips in front of the main generic movie. However, when I attempted to paste the third clip at the beginning of the main movie and two letters - it causes some of the titles, scrolls to overlap.

  • Project pane greys out after adding either HD movie footage or a photo'

Project pane greys out after adding either HD movie footage or a photo' into iMovie '08. Since using a HD camcorder, quite often, after adding either HD movie footage or a photo', the project pane greys out. I have to exit the project and re-enter to continue viewing the project; this is tiresome. Any thoughts or is this yet another iMovie '08 bug?

every app as a preference list, which can get corrupted.
    quit iM
look in user/Library/Preferences for a file called com.apple.iMovie(x).plist (x stands for any number) ....
    trash that.
    restart iMovie..
it doesn't hurt your projects nor does it touch any files.. it just 'resets' an app.. => slapp on backhead.. as I like to call it..
yes, hardware is nice, as long as you don't dare to handle AVCHD .. that is on Intel Mac only..
all Folders (Project/Events) is on local harddrive?

  • Toshiba L4353 39" - USB Movie Playback Problem

    Hi,
I recently bought a Toshiba L4353 39" smart tv, the usb playback does work but i keep having this really annoying problem,
basically i'm watching a movie file and everything is fine and then for no reason the playback of the file stops and i'm back at the my content screen, this has happened on multiple films and have tried a few different HDD so i can only assume it's the TV, help?
    Thanks, Martin

Did you test the movie playback using an USB flash memory stick or just USB HDD?
Does this issue appear playing movies supporting different file format?
In the [user manual page 89|http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/PDF/English/L4353-323950-English.pdf] you can find information about the file compatibility
Please check if the movie files are encoded properly and use the supported video and audio codec

  • Question: Apple TV Movie playback freezes very briefly but frequently

Last night I rented a couple of HD movies from iTunes on my 160GB Apple TV and watched them. During playback there were quite a few very brief instants of the picture freezing during movie playback. It's the kind of thing some people may not notice (I don't think my wife noticed), but it got to be kind of annoying to me, to the point where I was anticipating it to happen again instead of enjoying the movie!
One of the movies was about 80% downloaded when I started to watch it, although it said it was "Ready to Play." Also, the hard drive on my Apple TV is about 3/4 full with music.
Anyone have any idea why this would be happening and is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

Thank you for your response. Again, it was relatively minuscule, but just noticeable enough. I will reboot it.
Has this been a noted problem with other users of the old unit?
I've seen very bried video stutters and audio dropouts from time to time.
Another possibility is the encoding but generally it's not that - if you rewind and replay usually it plays ok 2nd time around - if encoding of video was to blame it would always be the same.
I am considering grabbing a new unit in the future. Has Apple noted that the new Apple TV will have "smoother playback" relative to the old unit, or something like that?
Not specifically, it's just a more powerful chip in it than previously - the old AppleTV was probably pushing the limits with the available hardware.
    However, from:
    http://www.apple.com/uk/appletv/
    this might be a hint:
    "All streaming. No hassle.
Everything you want to watch — films, TV programmes, photos and more — streams wirelessly to Apple TV. That way you don’t have to worry about managing storage or syncing to your iTunes library. HD film rentals play over the Internet to your widescreen TV, while music, photos and TV programmes stream from your computer. Either way, all you have to do is click and play. Since Apple TV features a powerful A4 processor, it streams everything effortlessly, without frozen screens or stutters. Video looks crisp and clear. And just like watching a DVD, you can fast-forward through opening credits, pause for a popcorn break or replay a hilarious scene until you memorise every line."

  • Jerky movie playback, but smooth on camera

I have a Panasonic PV-GS250 I bought in USA and have a great movie on the camera - pretty smooth pans and zooms for a beginner, but when imported into iMovie HD, it plays back jerkily. I'm new at this, but friends don't have same problems - although they use Windows? Film is imported into Mac as NTSC (assume 'cos camera bought in USA), but iMovie should handle all of that no problem, so why the jerkiness? I have checked the Import Perferences and Playback preferences and get no difference on Standard, or Highest! Can anybody help - or do I need to switch to Windows???!

No, you don't need to switch to Windows.
But have a look and see what other programs your running on your PB at the same time as iMovie ..movie import and playback uses a lot of resources, so turn off all unnecessary programs, and go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items, and turn off all unnecessary background programs, such as those which wait for incoming fax calls, those which monitor keypresses, and - also in Sys Prefs - turn off any other items you may have (..at the bottom of Preferences..) such as 'Snapz Pro' screen-monitoring/recording software.
Remove or disable any non-Apple 'codecs' you may have, such as any DVD-burning video software associated with 'Roxio' or 'Toast'.
Check that, under System Prefs>Energy Saver, you haven't ticked the "Put hard disk to sleep" box, or set any other Prefs to make the computer go to sleep or run slowly (..under 'Optimisation', set it to 'Better Performance').
Also, try going back to the iMovie Discussions index, where this topic sits, and type JERKY into the Search box at top right ..you'll see a whole load of Discussions, and suggestions about how to improve things.
Also, go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utilities, select the name of your hard disc, and click on 'Repair Permissions', then wait for a few minutes while your Mac makes sure that all relevant files are set to their appropriate 'permissions'.
A good way to separate your movie import/playback from everything else which your PB is doing, is to buy an external FireWire hard disc (minimum speed 5400rpm, or - better still - 7200rpm), plug it in, and use that for storing movie footage. Then if your PB has some internal 'housekeeping' to do (..indexing files, keeping track of things, writing and erasing temporary files..) it doesn't interrupt the movie playback, as it's using the internal disc for its own things, and just grabbing the footage off the external disc without its being interrupted.
Oh, by the way: Welcome to iMovie Discussions!
Oh, and other people may suggest which is the appropriate version of QuickTime to be using (..I can't remember which is best with 10.3.9..) as some later version(s) ..QT 7..? QT 7.0.2..? may give jerky playback, though I haven't noticed that myself..

  • Jpeg thumbnails from mov

has anyone found a way to create jpg thumbnails from movie files..... Basically what Motion does in the library preview, but in an external way so I can save them as PDF's for reference.
    "quad" G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You might try throwing them all in a QuickTime player, exporting to a thumbnail size, then taking that and saving an image sequence. Though I guess you'd lose file names then...
I guess the best way to do it would be to set up an action in PhotoShop(something that resizes to a specified resolution), save it as a droplet, then select all your files and drag them to that droplet. I don't have specifics on the procedure, but if you google Photoshop action droplet I'm sure you'll find a tutorial online somewhere.

  • Booklet crashing during fullscreen movie playback

My Nokia 3G Booklet crashes during fullscreen movie playback, usually after 30 minutes. I'm using the booklet to play to a LCD screen @ 1024 x 768 via the HDMI output. The movies aren't even HD, just 600-700MB Avi files. I'm using Windows Media Player version 12.0.7600.16415. Anybody else have this problem? The Booklet gets pretty hot playing movies too.

About the temperature you should not worry to much, I would suggest you just to try another player, such as GOM Player, and to see if you have same issue, also If you could submit some logs with the latest Error Logs from your system, so that we can check if there is a Kernel Power issue or it might be related to overheating of your CPU. I had seen full movies over HDMI and no issue with it. I guess might be some software issue.

  • Is there a way to change the thumbnails for movies/videos?

This may be more of a Leopard question, but I'm wondering if there's a way to change the thumbnail that OSX and Front Row display of movie files. I think this feature is awesome but would love to have more control over it so I can pick a frame from the video that relevant to me. Imagine Front Row's menu for movies with a bunch of thumbnails that are title screens or your favorite scenes from your movie collection (rather than a random thumbnail that may or may not even be identifiable to that movie).
I've already included this request to Apple in a suggestion I sent along including a few other Front Row requests/suggestions I had including movie/video playlists, album art support over streaming/shared libraries, and music that doesn't stop playing when you return to the main menu.

It appears that "saving" doesn't impact the quality, but wraps the file up in the .mov format (size and quality appear to stay the same). It worked ("saving" instead of using the save as a reference movie seems to fix the starting playback from the poster-frame issue). However, now a new issue has come up... I like to save the files to DVD as the original .avi so they will play on our Philips DVD players. However, being wrapped up in .mov means I have to have two versions of the file, and if my HDD ever dies or fills up I'll have to always correct the poster frame, and save another copy from the .avi original. Kind of frustrating... I wish Front Row/Quick Time would let you easily change the thumbnail and not have to change the format, etc.
Thanks everyone for your help. Hopefully some of this feedback has helped others with similar questions.
