Adding transitions to clips with handles

I am finding that anytime I insert a transition in between any two clips I must always insert handles using the ripple tool in order to create the space necessary to insert the transition.
1 - Why does FCP work this way? Any other editing program I have ever used handled this automatically. All I ever had to do (including Adobe Premiere) was insert the transition.
2 - Is there a way to automate this process? I find that having to create the handles and then insert the transition to be very tedious if I am going to do this for every single transition.

Because FCP is a professional application where program timing is critical. If the application shortened the clips to give them handles to allow for transitions, then that throws show timing off.

This is just a habit you have to get into...making sure that you mark IN and OUT points on the clips to allow for transitions. Every professional application I know requires this. Avid, Media 100, FCP, Edius. iMovie does it the way you are wanting, but that is a comsumer application. If Adobe does it the iMovie way, then I question it calling itself a professional NLE.

  • Using photos and after adding transitions the clip length changes

I am making a movie on imovie 11 and as I am adding transitions and music each time I add or change the clip duration changes.  I have it set at a particular time but it changes regardless.  I keep having to change durations of transitions and photo clips in order to bring it back.

    Try this...
    Click EDIT/TRANSITION OVERLAP
FULL will borrow frames from the photos to make the transition. The project gets shorter.
HALF will add frames to the transition so that the project stays the same overall length.

  • Adding Transition inbetween clips...clip is to short...must be more than 4m

I can't seem to ad transitions between clips anymore. Allways get the message that the clip is to short. ...must be more than 4 minutes !???
This wasn' t the case in iMovie 4 or 5 !!!
    Can i change this ?

  • Adding transitions reduce clip size

After I edit clips in the event library, I add them to a new project. Next, I add transitions between each clip. I've noticed that the timing of the clip is reduced when a transition is added. How can I retain the size of the clip or add transitions that don't cut clips I've edited to the exact size I want?
    Thanks, John

Transitions in iMovie have always shortened each clip by half the duration of the transition.
In earlier versions - up to and including iM HD 6 - the two transitions ..hmm; I've forgotten their names now, but they involved a freeze-frame ..ah; one of them was called "Overlap" ..maybe it was just that one ..anyway, "Overlap" did NOT "eat into" the clips it was attached to.
The way to work round this is to decide in advance what duration of transition you want to apply ..let's say one second ..and then make the clips either side of it half that duration longer ..e.g; each half a second longer than necessary. Those two extra half-seconds will then be "eaten away" by the transition.
In versions up to and including iMHD6 the total length of the edited movie would be eaten away by the combined duration of all transitions applied ..I haven't tested to see if this is true in iM'09.
Applying transitions after adding synchronised music to clips is therefore a "no-no", as the music will goes out of sync when transitions have been applied.

  • Imovie shuts down when adding transition to clip

I have imovie 6.0.3 and have been having problems bringing down a transition to the picture clips. When I drag it to the clip, the imovie shuts down and throws the transition into the trash.

    Hi Sue,
recently. I also got the same problem abt iMovie HD and while searching the discussions, I have seen your suggestion for similar problem.. I followed it and now it is working very well.
    Thank You..
I have another problem in my mac. There is a white vertical line showing up on the desktop for a while.. and recently another white line parallel to it also created and now I have 4 vertical lines on desktop which spoils the beauty of the mac. Do you know how to get rid of them? Mine is iMac, 10.4.9, 1.83GHz, Intel core Duo, 1GB memory.
Your suggestion will be greatly appreciated. My e-mail ID is [email protected]

    Welcome to discussions, viewfinder:)
Be certain to follow Bengt's good advice:
    Quit iMovie.
Locate a file named com.apple.iMovie.plist and get
rid of it. iMovie will create a new one the next
time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permissions
repair from the Disk Utility folder.
    The files are located here:
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iM
    vie.plist
Also, please answer regarding the amount of free
space you have left on the Mac.

  • How do I move a clip with transitions attached on the primary storyline?

One more frustrating problem with the mysterious magnetic timeline: on the priumary storyline I created a text clip with a gap clip on each side, then added cross dissolve at the beginning and end of the clip so that it fades in and out to black:
Now I want to reposition this text in the timeline, mantaining the fade in/out at the head and tails. In FCP7 this was simple as a gap in the timeline simply showed black and the clip could be moved as one piece. In FCPX when I try to move the text clip with the P position tool, the transitions disappear after repositioning. Extremely frustrating:
If I select the clip and the fades together, plus the gap clip at the end, and move them together with the Position tool then the fade out is retained, but the fade in still disappears. I've also tried rolling from the fade in from the gap clip before it, but instead of rolling the clip ahead this shortens the fade (I think the behavior of trimming and rolling transitions is totally wacky). The trim tool is also useless in this situation as you can only select one edit point at a time with it.
The only solution I found is to cut the gap clip before the transition, then move the text clip and transitions with the P tool. This will create two abuting gap clips before the text clip, but allow the transitions to remain intact. Not hard, but annoying to have to do
Often I have to adjust the position of a text clip in the timeline like this after adding the transitions to get the timing right. Is there any way to move the clip while retaining the transitions at the beginning and end? It would be so much easier to be able to roll the edges of the gap clips so that I didn't have to make extra edits and workarounds.
The problem seems to be that the gap clip acts as like a regular black slug video clip in some cases, but not in other case. When you move a clip in the primary storyline a gap clip is automatically created to fill a gap -- okay, fine. But you can roll the edges of a video clip with the P tool, but not a gap clip. ***?
I'm using the latest update, 10.0.8. I will be submitting this to Apple as well....

I am trying to move the text clip forward with the transitions still attached. The difference is that in FCP7 you can leave a gap before a dissolve and it will fade in from black. If you move the text clip, the dissolve moves with it, still attached.
In FCPX however, the gap has to be a gap clip. So the dissolve is attached to both the gap clip and to the text clip. Once you put the dissolve on the edit point, there is no way to move the text clip forward or back on the timeline without deleting the dissolve. Or, if you move the clip forward or back with the Position tool (necessary to create a gap) then the transitions just disappear.
Basically, I am looking to roll the transition with the clip.
I could use the opacity handle on the text clip (using "show video animation") in stead of a dissolve, but then I have no control over the shape of the dissolve curve and I'd have to add extra handles to the text clip to center the dissolve where I want it.
Regarding "I very seldom use the position tool. Rolling the gap clips can be done with the regular arrow tool - *that* is one example of the magnetic timeline working for you."
This is true, but clips behave differently when you you roll with the P tool vs the A tool. With the A tool, other clips are magnetically rippled forward or back on the timeline to maintain their relative relationship and avoid all gaps. With the P tool, video clips maintain their position on the timeline, creating or trimming gap clips when a gap is created or filled. The problem arises when a transition is attached to the clip you are moving or trimming.
I understand in priniciple why it behaves the way it does, but it's inconvenient in this case, and inconsistent with the normal behavior of gap clips when a transition isn't involved.
In my mind the transition should be anchored to the video clip, not to both the video and gap clip when there is a transition between the two.

  • Working with AVI: Adding transitions

I have a dozen AVIs from my Canon camera that I would like to edit together in FCE. I can import and view them fine on the timeline. But the program will not allow me to add transitions in between the individual clips. However, I can add transitions within the same clip. It just does not work when I want to put transitions between separate clips.
I have tried converting these clips to DV, MPEGS, QUICKTIMES before importing and it does not resolve the problem.
    Any suggestions?
    M

To add transitions between clips they must have "handles", that is, additional hidden media after the first clip end point and before the second clip start point. To do that you must move the IN and OUT points of each clip before adding transitions.
I suggest you to convert your clips to .mov (with DV-PAL or DV-NTSC codec, and audio stereo uncompressed PCM 48 kHz) before importing to FCE. You can use MPEG Streamclip (free) to do that. This doesn't add handles... but it avoids preliminary FCE rendering.

  • How to move multiple clips with transitions?

Im still transitioning from FCP7 to FCP 10.1.2 and can't believe I have missed the lesson that explains how to move multiple clips with transitions.
Up till now I have tried several work arounds including deleting all the transitions then using the (P) Position tool to move the clips from the primary track to some track above it then re adding all the transitions.  This is a function I do on a daily basis.  Am I missing something?  Please help!
    Thank you

With some further investigation, the transitions have nothing to do with my problem.  In my case there was a tiny “Black gap slug” within the group that was preventing me from being able set it on top of another group of clips or gap someplace.  But even with the gap removed… I can move the clips on top of another group but the transitions stay behind on the primary (Magnetic)
In the screen shot you can see what happens when I move a group out of the primary (magnetic) timeline onto a gap.  All the transitions get left behind.
Ive notices that Cutting and pasting will only paste the sequence some other place on the primary (magnetic) timeline for me.
An example of why I would want to put a cropped/ resized group on top of another group is to do picture in picture effects or if I wanted to create a background behind a set of adjusted clips.

  • Exporting clips in the timeline with handles

Is there a way to export a selected clip in the timeline with handles? I know you can export all the clips in the timeline with handles using Media Manager, but is there a way to do it with just one clip?
I should ask- is there a quicker way? because I know one way is to drag the clip up to V2 and just manually extend handles to the clip and export it that way. I was hoping for a quicker method. I need to export some self-containted clips that I can reinsert for sending the sequence to Color.

    Thanks. Snap is enabled.
I added 30 clips at once from the project bin onto the timeline. So I was really amazed that there were small gaps between some clips. When I tried to repair this (hold CTrl and move the clips to the left) the puzzle began. It happened that moving the clip only three frames to the left, I lost 15 seconds of the total. I discovered this was either a total loss of a clip (not he one I moved, but a clip say three clips to the right) or it was considerably shorter in time.
First I thougt it had to do with my good old dualcore (1.8Ghz), but on the new one (Quad 2.4Ghz) it is still the same.
This is the first time it happens (after 3 completed small projects).
From now on I will only drag one clip at the time to minimize the chance on this behaviour.
But you will understand, I'm not happy...

  • Adding transitions to non-Storyline clips?

Apparently, the first clip added to the timeline gets designated as the "Storyline". In my current project, it ends with a clip that is not designated "Storyline," and I would like to add a fade to black transition. However, FCP X seems to only allow me to add transitions (of any kind) to clips that are designated as "Storyline" clips. Yet, the FCP X manual states: "Effects can be added to any clips in the Timeline". Well, this isn't true.
How do I add transitions to any clip in the timeline? Do I have to always first right-click on a clip and choose "Create Storyline" for each clip to which I want to add a transition?
    Thanks,
    William

Yes, you can only add transitions to clips that are considered to be inside a storyline.
    storylines
All instances of the Timeline contain a primary storyline, which is the main sequence of clips that you build to create your movie.
Storylines are sequences of clips connected to the primary storyline. You can use storylines for the same purposes as connected clips (such as creating cutaways, compositing titles and other graphics, and adding sound effects and music).
The unique advantage of storylines is the ability to edit a sequence of connected clips within the context of the other clips in the Timeline. For example, you can add cross dissolve transitions to a series of superimposed titles in a storyline and then adjust the timing of the titles to match clips in the primary storyline. Like connected clips, storylines can contain both video and audio, or they can be video only or audio only.
It isn't as bad as you think though, as once you've created a storyline with a clip, you can continue adding additional clips to that same storyline. So it's not like every clip needs to be it's own storyline.

  • Linking three or more clips with transitions in FCP7

I am cutting my first lengthy FCP7 project from 15 minutes down to ten.
There are a few segments of this video which I would like to keep together -- link. None of these clips in these segments are linked together at all (no underlines).
However, I discover when I use the Command key and darken the two videoclips, the transition between them, and the audio clips that goes underneath all that, the Link function under Modify is greyed out. There's no way to treat these two video clips with transition along with the audio I set under it as a unit.
Am I doing this wrong or is there a workaround when I want to link multiple clips (i.e. three or more) together, even if it includes a transition between the video clips?
    THANKS.

Two ways come to mind ... #1  Nest the clips - select (highlight) the clips in the Timeline, then go to Sequence->Nest Items.
#2  Set an IN and OUT point for the parts you want to combine, then export a self-contained movie.  Import the resulting file into your project and use it to replace the original individual clips .

  • I have put several clips with transitions into the timeline in final cut pro. There are two clips which are followed by transitions which do not play at the right speed. It is extremely frustrating, can anyone help?

I have put several clips with transitions into the timeline in final cut pro X. There are two separate clips which are followed by transitions which do not play at the right speed. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening - any thoughts/help?

The two HD clips were purchased from itunes (MPEG - 4) and converted to .mov for use in Final Cut Pro. Project properties - 720p HD 1280x720 (60p)
    Is this enough information?

  • Adding transitions to non cut segments?

When I want to add a video transition, I am currently cutting the clip with the razor tool and then I add the fade by selecting the cut segment between the two clips. Is there a way to add a video transition without having to cut the video?

A transition is an effect placed between 2 pieces of video, or at the cut point of one clip that has been divided. Your transition will need handles to be properly displayed, in most cases.
For example, if you want a 1 second (30 frames) cross dissolve between 2 clips, you will need to trim off the last 15 frames of your first clip, and the first 15 frames of your second clip.
When these two clips are bumped up against each other in the timeline, and the dissolve is added at the cut point you will see a smooth transition 1 second long between the two clips.
There are other ways to place transitions, though; the FCP manual has lots of info on this topic.

  • New to Premiere Elements 9 - adding keywords to clips in timeline?

Hello to hopefully my new best friends
I am editing college football highlights.  I have been using iMovie for about 3 years, but it lacks certain features that I was told (still hoping!) Premiere Elements 9 has.  Anyway -- I am editing from full game videos from an external hard drive.  I have imported an mp4 file (full game), dragged it to the timeline, and edited out the plays that I want to keep, then delete the rest of the footage.  So, I have lots of short clips on my timeline.  Before I begin the "real editing" or adding the transitions, effects, titles, etc., I would like to be able to "tag" each little clip with a keyword, such as "tackle, sack, interception, etc." - so that I can sort them easily.  I see that you can add keyword tags in the "Organizer" - but that adds the tag to the "entire clip" - which in my case is a complete football game; not my edited clips.  Is there any way to tag my edited clips in the timeline???
Thank you so much in advance for any help you can provide!
    Kim

    Kim,
I've not done this in PrE, so someone else will have to tell you where my process goes off, or exactly how to easily do it in PrE. In PrPro, I can do exactly as you have done, then create Sub-Clips from each of those segments in my Timeline. This will then place them into a Bin (like a folder that I create) in my Project Panel. I have the availability to use many different Columns there, and can even create them to suit. I can also order those Columns, so that say "Description" is the first Column visible, after the Clip/Sub-Clip's name. Some of the Columns, like Description, are text boxes, and I can easily fill them in with just the type of annotation, that you describe. When working on Projects, similar to yours, I will move Description to the head of the list, with Video Usage, and then Audio Usage next. Other attribute Columns follow along, and are ordered to my preferences.
Sorry that I am much less familiar with PrE, as most of my Projects there are rather simple. Still, I know that PrE offers one the ability to display several text Columns in Project Panel, so that part should work. I am just unsure of the Sub-Clips, so that you can easily see just what you have Cut.
Good luck, and I am sure that others will be along in a bit, and can point you to an exact workflow, that will get you what you want.
    Hunt
BTW - by using single words in Descriptions, I can even Sort by that Column. Not sure where the alpha runs out - first letter of first word, or something else?
