Adding transitions

I've made several iMovies in both version 5 and 6. Something has happened that hasn't before.
When I try to add transitions to my movie (all still frames with Ken Burns), I get a message that reads:
An unknown error occurred.
You may b eable to continue without any problems.
You may also wish to save, quit, and re-launch
iMovie HD.
Anybody have this happen to them before? If so, any solutions?
PowerBook G4 15, 20GB iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.67 GHz, 1GB DDR SDRAM, SuperDrive, AirPort Extreme Base Station

I had this happen to me just recently. In reading the documentation for iMovie, I learned that iMovie uses a timeslice from each clip to create the transition. Each clip then loses a certain amount of time in order to create the transition for the amount of time you specify. If you happen to delete the transition by either clicking on it and pressing the delete key or pressing the control key and clicking the transition then choosing clear from the submenu, you will get the error message when you try to reapply a transition. If you choose cut instead of clear, the portions used for the transition will appear as duplicate clips but in a smaller time frame, you can then delete the duplicate clips using the cut command. This is the only work around (cut instead of clear or delete) I could find to circumvent the error message. I can now reapply a transition. Now the only problem I have is when I try to lengthen the clip time I get a stutter and ghost image of the previous clip. I'll keep researching and try to find a solution.

  • Final Cut Pro X crashes when adding transitions, throughout the entire program.

I've had FCP X installed for a few weeks now, and I decided to hold back asking my question and see if anybody else is experiencing the same problems.
I did find one matching problem on the discussions forum, but the user found a solution which I tried, and did it did not work.
Everytime I try to add a very simple transition to my video in Final Cut Pro X, it gives me the spinning colorwheel, hesitates for a few seconds and then crashes.
It only does it with transitions, I can add effects, adjust color, etc. but only when adding transitions does it crash.
I've tried deleting events and original media, I've reimported using optimized media, I've tried both ways of keeping files in original locations and also copying to final cut events folder.
The video I'm using is full 1080p mov files from a Canon 5D Mark II.
It does it in the timeline as well as the secondary timeline.
I've tried the solution that the previous asker did, which was copying the content to another FCP event, and it didn't work for me. Still crashes whether I try to drag the transition to my timeline, use the keyboard shortcut, or double click.
I have a Early 2010 15 inch MBP i5 with 8gb of RAM running newest version of Snow Leopard.
    Hope I've provided enough information
    Thanks,

  • Adding transitions creates audio noise

Adding transitions creates a slight "pop" noise at the beginning and end of the transitions. Any solutions for avoiding or correcting this problem?

You might want to try using something like a Fade Out or Fade In instead of one of the transitions that add or subtract to the length of the video
    [Quoted from iMovie Help]
Some transitions (for example, Cross Dissolve and Push) shorten your movie by a few seconds, depending on the speed of the transition. For example, if you add a transition with a speed of 2 seconds, iMovie overlaps 2 seconds from the first clip and 2 seconds from the second clip as it renders the transition. This shortens your movie by a total of 2 seconds.
The Overlap transition freezes the last frame of the clip on its left and superimposes it over the next clip. Fade In/Fade Out blackens the last frames of the clip on the left and the first frames of the following clip.
    [End quote]
I think the best way is to extract the audio right after you import and before any transitions are added.

  • Pictures "snap" after adding transitions

I'm very frustrated with IDVD. In every movie I make there are a few pictures that, after adding the transition they "flash", it happens usually at the begining of the movie, but not necessarily. It is a random flaw and it comes with a sound that is similar to the sound we hear when the monitor goes to sleep.
I've tried deleting, clearing the transition and the picture, but whatever stays in its place acquires the same defect. I don't know what else to do, I've tried everything. If someone knows what I should do, please write back, I have loads of clips to make, but I won't until I know how to fix this.
I've read similar complaints but with video after adding transitions, but mine only happens with pictures.
    thank you,
    Paula

    Hello, Paula,
I noticed that you posted to the iDVD discussions, but your problem sounds as if it occurs with your iMovie, not iDVD.
Having a 'flash' with certain transitions has been noted in iMovie postings before. I have had that happen on occasion. The solution for many of us has been to delete the offending transition, and then play the end of the clip preceding the removed transition. You have to play it frame-by-frame, and you may see one frame of all white. Delete this one frame, redo the transition and you should be ok.
If the video is ok, but there is still a pop/snap/buzz noise, that is also a known problem and has occurred since iMovie 4. This 'popping' noise usually occurs between a silent photo and a video clip. There is no good solution yet, but if you zoom out the timeline until you see the cross-shape of the transition, you can select 'Show volume levels' and manually adjust the volume of the transition. Sometimes I have just lowered and then raised back the volume level bar and the noise has markedly reduced.
Hope this is helpful to you!

  • Working with AVI: Adding transitions

I have a dozen AVIs from my Canon camera that I would like to edit together in FCE. I can import and view them fine on the timeline. But the program will not allow me to add transitions in between the individual clips. However, I can add transitions within the same clip. It just does not work when I want to put transitions between separate clips.
I have tried converting these clips to DV, MPEGS, QUICKTIMES before importing and it does not resolve the problem.
    Any suggestions?
    M

To add transitions between clips they must have "handles", that is, additional hidden media after the first clip end point and before the second clip start point. To do that you must move the IN and OUT points of each clip before adding transitions.
I suggest you to convert your clips to .mov (with DV-PAL or DV-NTSC codec, and audio stereo uncompressed PCM 48 kHz) before importing to FCE. You can use MPEG Streamclip (free) to do that. This doesn't add handles... but it avoids preliminary FCE rendering.

  • Using photos and after adding transitions the clip length changes

I am making a movie on imovie 11 and as I am adding transitions and music each time I add or change the clip duration changes.  I have it set at a particular time but it changes regardless.  I keep having to change durations of transitions and photo clips in order to bring it back.

    Try this...
    Click EDIT/TRANSITION OVERLAP
FULL will borrow frames from the photos to make the transition. The project gets shorter.
HALF will add frames to the transition so that the project stays the same overall length.

  • Flashing after adding transitions

Has anyone experienced flashing after adding transitions especially using cross fades. It does not matter what length the effect is. It is frustrating and unacceptable. I have not received one answer in the past. Ever since I added ILife 06 this is is started. Maybe I should get rid of the Ilife update?

I have had the same thing happen. I dont know why but I have solved it two ways - save, quit and reopen. If that doesnt work delete the transition and replace it.

  • Final cut bug, interlacing when adding transitions

    Hello
So I have been experiencing a problem in final cut pro 6 when generating a timeline using motion jpeg A and using transitions that all clips end up looking interlaced. The fields in the sequence settings are set to non and all the settings are at high quality. All preferences and settings have been checked a hundred times over. Even soemtimes in the past generating a new sequence and copying your timeline to the new sequence would sometimes resolves some problems.
After weeks of banging my head against the wall I managed to find out that importing quicktimes into final cut would default the field on every quicktime to upper odd, causing this problem. Changing this option to none seemed to fix the problem. In saying this, this is not ideal as if you were working with say 40 quicktimes or more you would have to manually change each field to every quicktime before you start your timeline. Not good.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so have you found a better way around it?
    Thanks

  • Adding transitions after-the-fact

Well, Apparently I know just enough about FCE to be dangerous! I got cute and completed my project involving mostly .jpg and .tif photos, figuring out that once I'd laid it out, I'd be in a better position to "pace it" by going back and inserting dissolves and/or wipes later. I didn't know then that I should have apparently overlapped the stills for "handles." I didn't. They are cut together end-to-end. As suggested by one question here, I went back and placed an "OUT" mark a 0.05 sec on the left shot...even tried an 0.15 sec mark. It'll lay in a cross dissolve but it's so quick it may as well not be there. This is a medium to slow paced project and I'd like at least a 15-20 frames on either side of the dissolve. WHen I try to adjust duration, I get the Apple sound "thud" or similar clunk letting me know that's not going to happen. Haven't been able to use the Selection tool for highlighting and extending the dissolve at either end. I knew I should have known more about what I was doing before I started
    Any help's appreciated.

VJK, I couldn't agree with you more about "Im making this way too complicated," however I've been doing exactly as you instructed: The cursor does become the two parallel bars where the transition/still meet indicating that I should be able to drag that end of the transition to the right to lengthen it (or at the other end to the left)---however, the iMac won't allow it. That's what is so perplexing. I can't find any difference between these two stills to which I've added a slow "zoom in" and another other two stills with the same "zoom in" or "pan" added where the transition worked as it should have. The stills are five to eight seconds in length so there shouldn't be a problem there. Yet, the last three transitions I've tried to lay in vary from one frame to eight frames. I've repeatedly tried several techniques and none allows me to expand them to one second.

  • Missing audio in Video when adding Transition

    Hi!
I'm new to flash 8, and trying to learn video playback in
Flash, and I have one question: I've added a transition effect
between 3 videos, and when I play the swf file, the audio is
    missing in the 3 video's.
Is it so that audio automaticly dissapear when I add
    transitions?
    Thanks for any answer...

My actionscript is below, if that helps anyone. I don't know
if this is a stupid question with an obvious answer, if so please
    let me know:-)

  • Adding transitions in Premier Pro CS4

When I edit a movie clip and add it to my project, all seems well. If I then add a transition effect such as a roll out or page turn between clips, extra frames are added that I had intended to cut out. I have one clip that is just right for the project but the last few frames show someone walking into shot. After I edit this out, the shot is perfect but when I then add a transition effect between this clip and the next, those extra frames are added back in. The two clips need some form of transition between them to flow properly otherwise I would just do without. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Support for these programs is almost as important as the software content, especially when you are just starting off.
I agree completely. In the "good old days," I always suggested a couple of complete reads of the manual. They are now out of favor, and Help Files have taken over. From where I sit, there are both good and bad with the electronic/on-line files, but we will not go there.
I also strongly recommend the Adobe Classroom in a Book for Premiere Pro CS__, Adobe Press. That series will introduce one to the program, its interface, the location and official names (really pays off, when one goes to Search the Help Files), and how to do most things in PrPro. I once complained that the CiaBseries was too heavy on the "how," and not so much on the "why," but as of at least the CS3 version, the author covered the "why" very, very well.
Now, I will probably get flamed for this next statement, but I feel that this forum is a great resource for finding out how to do things in the program. Many of the folk here have done almost everything that can be done in PrPro, and that is a bunch! With the Help Files, a copy of CiaB, and the gained knowledge of what each aspect is called in PrPro, when you add this forum, one's abilities are almost limitless.
Here is another great resource, the PrPro-Wiki, and especially the FAQ's section and the tutorials.
    Good luck,

  • Adding transitions in iDVD?

I'm making my first dvd and am having a slight problem with it. I have a slideshow from iPhoto that is in a .mov filetype with dimensions: 720x540. I want to add a title and fade in/fade out transitions but I don't want to diminish the quality of the video. What's the most effective way to do this?
I thought I would try adding my file into iMovie and adding the transitions there, then exporting into a .dv file but I can see that the quality goes down if I do it that way. Any other ideas? Can I add transitions directly into iDVD?
    Thanks in advance!

F Shippey, I just created my first slideshow using
    iMovie,(I had over 100 phooto's) using your
instructions from a previous question that you had
answered. Everything worked fine, but how do I get it
to repeat itself witout having to stop it and start
    it again manually?.

Select the slideshow in the map view and then select Advanced>Loop

  • Adding transitions to non cut segments?

When I want to add a video transition, I am currently cutting the clip with the razor tool and then I add the fade by selecting the cut segment between the two clips. Is there a way to add a video transition without having to cut the video?

A transition is an effect placed between 2 pieces of video, or at the cut point of one clip that has been divided. Your transition will need handles to be properly displayed, in most cases.
For example, if you want a 1 second (30 frames) cross dissolve between 2 clips, you will need to trim off the last 15 frames of your first clip, and the first 15 frames of your second clip.
When these two clips are bumped up against each other in the timeline, and the dissolve is added at the cut point you will see a smooth transition 1 second long between the two clips.
There are other ways to place transitions, though; the FCP manual has lots of info on this topic.

  • IMovie crashes when adding transitions

I just bought an intel core 2 duo iMac with iMovie HD 6 it has 1GB memory and 189 GB of free space on the hard disk. Everytime I try and add a transition between two photos, specifically the overlap transition, it crashes. The kens burns effect has also stopped functioning correctly (it jumps around). I have tried everything suggested on the discussion boards to correct the issue:
    - verified and repaired the hard disk
    - cleared caches using OnyX
    - shut down iMovie, deleted com.apple.iMovie.plist file, then restarted
    - got rid of all third party iMovie and Quicktime plugins
    - re-started the project 4 times
    - called apple
    - also, the movie is not saved on an external hard drive
Nothing has work so far. iMovie still crashes immediately each time I try and add a transition. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    iMac Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I hope you don't mind my jumping in and adding to the muddied waters, but I am also having trouble with iMovie transitions. I just bought the MacBook Pro - 200 gig hard drive with boosted RAM. I have experienced the following problems:
    1. After reading Karl's caution about iMovie trash, I don't empty the trash until the project is completed, so that's not the issue.
    2. And this is what's odd . . . I just put one movie together and had not a single glitch. I pulled stills in using Ken Burns, was able to go back and edit the clips, change transitions, etc.
    3. I have another movie that I have been working on and it was going fine UNTIL I added the first transition. After that, whenever I select a clip I get a black screen and have to reimport the photo to see it.
    4. When I try and add transitions, sometimes they work, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes the system crashes, and sometimes it looks like it is going to render, but the rendering line never progresses.
    5. I have tried deleting the plist files for both iMovie and iPhoto, and repairing permissions, but it doesn't work.
    6. No security features are turned on.
    7. I do have slick transitions, but as I said, they worked fine in the first movie (where trash was never emptied.)
This is making me crazy and is far too time consuming. Karl, any thoughts?
    Thanks so much.

  • Adding transitions reduce clip size

After I edit clips in the event library, I add them to a new project. Next, I add transitions between each clip. I've noticed that the timing of the clip is reduced when a transition is added. How can I retain the size of the clip or add transitions that don't cut clips I've edited to the exact size I want?
    Thanks, John

Transitions in iMovie have always shortened each clip by half the duration of the transition.
In earlier versions - up to and including iM HD 6 - the two transitions ..hmm; I've forgotten their names now, but they involved a freeze-frame ..ah; one of them was called "Overlap" ..maybe it was just that one ..anyway, "Overlap" did NOT "eat into" the clips it was attached to.
The way to work round this is to decide in advance what duration of transition you want to apply ..let's say one second ..and then make the clips either side of it half that duration longer ..e.g; each half a second longer than necessary. Those two extra half-seconds will then be "eaten away" by the transition.
In versions up to and including iMHD6 the total length of the edited movie would be eaten away by the combined duration of all transitions applied ..I haven't tested to see if this is true in iM'09.
Applying transitions after adding synchronised music to clips is therefore a "no-no", as the music will goes out of sync when transitions have been applied.
