Adding wireless device driver to Linux Mint 17.2

Hi,
I recently installed Linux Mint 17.2  Cinnamon on an old Dell D620 laptop. It has a DW1490 wireless card (Broadcomm?).  It showed up once in the device manager but never worked. I think I uninstalled it because it doesn't show up at all.  Is there a way to find a driver and manually install it?
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

So to follow up, I received my fixed laptop back after a month and a few days. It turns out that Compugen had some sort of glitch in their ordering system that ended up ordering an expired part number for the keyboard. After a few calls from me, they escalated the issue, discovered the problem and corrected it. While the experience was painful for me (over a month without my 4 day old T440p laptop), at least it was resolved and Compugen helped me out with a few things for my troubles. I promptly made a backup image of my Win8.1 hard drive with Clonezilla, wiped the drive and installed Linux Mint 17.1 on it with no issues. Things are great minus the headache over the Christmas holidays I had to endure.

  • HP Laserjet P1102w Linux driver cannot find wireless device in printer

When using the (ubuntu 12.04) HP Device Manager to configure the HP Laserjet P1102w Wifi, The device is recognized, but when I go to step three by clicking next, I get this message: “Unable to locate wireless hardware on device”. As a result, when clicking on OK, the only option, I get the following message: “Unable to turn on wireless adapter”. I follow the directions but this is always the result. I only have linux computers here and it is a bummer that I have to borrow someones Window’s computer to set it up. I really do not want to have to keep doing that..... Can anyone help? and thanks in advance.

Thank you Advance23 for the reply, I installed using that link already, the problem is that, the software is Unable to locate the wireless hardware on the printer. I have used 3 computers and same result. If, however, i use a windows computer to get the wireless device working on the printer, i have success.. I had to barrow that computer, and since then have changed service providers and have to activate the wireless device in the printer again. i do not have a windows computer to complete the task at hand.
that aside, all of the other items in the device manager work fine, and as long as i use a usb cable, i can print. I do not buy this printer for that reason, however, I wanted a wireless printer in my home. So there we are... kind of stuck right now. wishing the software would do what it claims to do.

  • I am a school administrator. I want to know if anyone knows how to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device for individual student work files  that are only accessible to the student or teacher?

I need to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device. I want the student to do work on the iPad , then save it securely on the hard drive, then be able to go back and get the file and continue working on it. Can this be done?

We use google apps for education with the google drive ipad app
The google drive editor is basic.   But it meets our needs.   Students go to the app called "google drive".  They logon and start a document on an iPad and then edit again using almost any device anywhere(home or school): ipad, windows7, mac, android.
We setup each student account with folders for each teacher.  Students can move documents into their teacher folder, and then the teacher can edit in real time with the studnet.   It's like a multi player editor.
There's no quick fix to allow students using ipads to save work, then revise alone or with the help of a teacher.
You could also use skydrive, dropbox, or filebrowser, but the ability of ipad apps to edit and save revisions is spotty.  It depends if that app developer has added support.  You can see your MS Word doc files with those tools, but I don't know if you can edit the DOCX file, then save back to DOCX  files.

  • U530 - boot Linux Mint from CD drive

I'm trying to test out Linux Mint by booting from an external CD drive. But I haven't been able to get the computer to recognize this as a boot option. I've gone into the BIOS and turned on/prioritized the Legacy boot options, but no luck so far.
What's the procedure that would allow me to do this? Thanks!

    hi bmercer
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Boot to ODD or External USB
This guide is not System Specific and not all of the option may show inside a certain BIOS version, Just Make sure that all option listed here that is available on a Lenovo BIOS is set as follows.
    Under Exit TAB
     OS Optimization
    OS Optimized
For the two options above:  Should be set as Disabled or Other OS
Under Boot Tab / Start up Tab
Boot Mode Should be set to Legacy
Boot Priority Should be set to Legacy First
UEFI Boot should be set to Disabled
    Quick Boot should be Disabled
StartUp device Menu prompt should be Disabled2
    Quick Boot Should be Disabled
    USB Boot should be Enabled
    Secure boot Should be Disabled
Once everything are Set, make sure to save all changed by hitting F10 and Enter for Yes
After Hitting enter It will Restart and You will have to keep on tapping F12
this should pull up the Boot Menu letting you select where to boot.
If not succesful pulling up the boot menu after the restart, Power Drain the System and turn it on while hitting F12 Again.
    Let me know your findings
    Cheers!

  • Sony DR-BT21G Wireless Headset & windows 7. Device driver software?

Hi Guys, trying to connect my Sony DR-BT21G Wireless Headset , to my P.C via Bluetooth,
Operating system for my machine wasW8, but has been downgraded to W7.
I have installed a Bluetooth dongle.
The computer recognises the headset as a device, but states that "the Driver for the Bluetooth peripheral device is not installed"
Cannot find a download to fix this problem.. any ideas?

Please try the following. Each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the pair status after completing each step:
Make sure both devices are turned off at the beginning of the pairing procedure.
Be sure to place the Bluetooth wireless devices within 1 meter (3 ft) of each other.
Make sure that the Bluetooth wireless device is in the Pairing mode.
Enter the same Passcode for both Pairing devices.
Make sure that the profiles of the Bluetooth wireless devices match. Devices that do not support the same profile cannot be paired.
If the Bluetooth wireless device has a TX/RX (transmit/receive) switch, make sure it is set to the appropriate function.
Some Bluetooth wireless devices can function as a transmitter or receiver only. Two devices that serve the same function (transmit or receive) cannot be paired. You must pair a transmitter with a receiver.
The device you are trying to pair with must support Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile).
If pairing is not established within five minutes, pairing mode will be cancelled and the Bluetooth headphones will automatically turn off. If this happens, perform the pairing procedure again.

  • ITunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from an external drive (or streamed from other wireless devices). Any solution in sight?

Video streaming of DRM movies, purchased from iTunes and other vendors, to any iOS device is not working.

I am not sure if you really understand the issue at hand. Possibly that you are just scanning, not reading the whole text, or simply that you just want to close a thread with your last words or derail it for whatever strange reason. So far you have been more destructive than helpful, but again this could be ignorance at best.
If you would have had the decency to read the entire thread you would have come to the conclusion that every manufacturer, I came across, has posted FAQ's to this issue but Apple. Find a short excerpt below:
SeaGate  http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/006135en?language=en_US <http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/006135en?language=en_US> Playing DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected movies in Seagate Media App Information regarding remote streaming of DRM protected movies. Most forms of DRM (Digital Rights Management) will prevent playing movies on unauthorized devices or from remote storage hosted on wireless drives or NAS drives(Seagate Wireless, Seagate Wireless Plus, Seagate Central or Seagate Personal Cloud). Movies purchased from iTunes can be streamed to iOS 6 and iOS 7 devices which were authorized from remote storage (the video could be selected in Seagate Media App and would be played in a Safari browser), however in iOS 8 this has stopped working. A bug has been filed with Apple, however this functionality has not been restored. Therefore, DRM protected movies purchased on iTunes can no longer be played on devices running iOS 8.
SanDisk  http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16668/kw/itunes <http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16668/kw/itunes> Videos purchased or rented from iTunes will not play in iOS 8 The SanDisk Wireless Media Drive and Wireless Flash Drive support streaming of DRM protected iTunes purchased movie content to authorized devices in iOS 6 and iOS 7 ONLY. The DRM protected content is opened in Safari where the DRM is decrypted and the video is played. iOS 8 issue In iOS 8 Apple device has NOT enabled Safari based DRM decryption. Therefore DRM protected content, i.e. purchased movies or TV shows from iTunes, CANNOT be streamed from the Media Drive/WFD in iOS 8. This issue has been reported to Apple. We do not have any estimated date when Safari will support DRM decryption of iTunes purchased content.
in contrast: here is the excerpt from the Apple Store http://store.apple.com/us/product/HFSQ2VC/A/sandisk-connect-64gb-wireless-media- drive?fnode=12ea113d2dba9883d5561c573d91…
    Overview
With the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive and its companion app, you're free to share and stream high-definition content between your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Mac devices without a cable connection. Simply connect wirelessly from your iOS device to the media drive and instantly stream your HD movies, browse photos and listen to music from around the house or on the go, while avoiding the common hassles of cables, attachment limits or Internet availability
AirStash  http://support.airstash.com/entries/55924774-Known-Issues-with-iOS-8-and-or-iPho ne-6-6- <http://support.airstash.com/entries/55924774-Known-Issues-with-iOS-8-and-or-iPho ne-6-6-> (Excerpt) Known Issues with iOS 8 and/or iPhone 6/6+ Apple recently released iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. Here are the remaining issues that we are aware of in the iOS 8 general release: • Video streaming of DRM movies (purchased from iTunes and other vendors): iTunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from AirStash (or streamed from other wireless devices). These movies are digitally protected and the AirStash app sends them to the Safari browser to play (which works for all prior iOS versions). However, in iOS 8, Safari will no longer allow DRM movies to play. These movies will play when the video is transferred to the iPhone/iPad and played in the Apple's Video App or the corresponding App from the vendor.

If this is the case and Apple will not address this issue or fix it since Apple believes that movies should be protected this way, you need to let the community know that movies are restricted this way. Re: Streaming itunes DRM movies to safari on iPad not working - IOS 8 issue? [ Edited ] Options 11-06-2014 03:19 PM - edited 11-06-2014 03:22 PM Actually, this is not something we can NOT fix. It appears that Apple finally fixed an issue they had with their movie DRMs. The files should have never played in the first place. • DVD/CD drive not working on linux - ubuntu or linux mint

CD/DVD drive doesn't work with linux mint or ubuntu. Tried mounting it manually but fails.

    Hi there,
Is the drive being detected when you click Computer or My computer ?
if not, you can try the following.
    Run Regedit then go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
look for upper and lower filters ; Right click both of them and delete it.
alternatively you go to this link and download the patch:
    http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSupportSite/search.do;jsessionid=78DE0C1BFF71FB71B290A830E7E71 A5D?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=445782xml& sliceId=&dialogID=47618490&stateId=0%200%204798466 7
If all else fails, then you might need to try booting on the recovery cd. since it will isolate wether if your problem is software related. if it still fails, then you might already need to have a CD replacement.

  • HP LaserJet P1102W - no print output in Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon Desktop

I've just done a default install of Linux Mint 17.1 - as feared, no print output.
I'm guessing I need to install a driver - but I couldn't find anything easily on HP site, only Windows/Mac OS stuff. Are HP printers generally linux friendly? Where can I download drivers if they are? More over, I'm a total linux newbie, so any drivers need to be easily installed! I'm not currently familiar with Terminal windows and line commands!
My printer does have wireless enabled, but I have it connected via direct USB also.
Linux Mint did offer to run a diagnostic tool/debugging tool which gave a great deal of what means nothing to me. Debug output is below if it is helpful, but hoping a simple driver install will cure all ...

  • Problems setting up WiFi in Linux Mint 6

    Hey Guys,
I'm running a 32bit version of Linux Mint 6 on my T60. I need a hand setting up my wireless connection. It boggles my mind, I am able to see the wireless network in my 'available networks' option. I am just not able to connect to it. Anyone else have this problem. I know my Atheros wireless device has caused problems for others...
    Thanks

  • Firefox crashes on linux mint 14

I am using firefox 30.0 on linux mint 14 - nadia. And, I am constantly experiencing sporadic crashes. About 5-6 time firefox crashes on my system. I have tried resetting the firefox, with add-ons disabled in the safe mode and also updated the flash plugin. But, still there is no improvement in my experience. I am still facing often crashes which has started to get quite annoying. Below, I am mentioning some of the crash IDs from last couple of days. Please have a look and if someone could tell me what is making firefox crash so often on my system and what could possibly be done to avoid that.

  • Ethernet and XP Laptop will not see Aiport Wireless devices.

All, I have a HP XP Pro Laptop plugged into a Express N configured to connect to a extreme N set to 5ghz. My Desktop works, but my laptop won't see any wireless devices when airport utility comes up. I am trying to use Itunes to see 2 apple tv's, 2 other express g's, etc. My desktop works fine and sees all devices when plugged in the ethernet express N. Wireless connection also works fine as I bridged a G express to the N, for dual band integrity. I can connect to the internet with it, but it won't recognize the shared drive off the extreme, so itunes / apple tvs are dead to it. I have tried the following:
_ Uninstalled and reinstalled, itunes, bonjour
    - Repaired under add/ removed programs for itunes / bonjour
    - added a 5353 port manually - had to remove (conflict)
    - Shut off Firewall settings
    - Checked all boxes for bonjour under allow exceptions
I am stumped guys. Any help for this DIY'r would be appreciated!

I recently acquired a SuperMicro chassis that has a SAS2 expander backplane. It has SFF-8087 ports on it.http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/BPN-SAS2-846EL.pdfI made a post on another forum and someone mentioned that the card couldn't be used with that backplane since it's a SATA controller, however, the backplane is both SAS and SATA device compliant, it's only the RAID controller, as far as I know, that is a "SATA II" controller, and not a SAS controller. So, I couldn't find anything in the official documentation of this controller on whether or not it was able to control SAS devices. The card itself has a 3 SFF-8087 ports though, couldn't this theoretically still be used with a SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cable(seen below)since the backplane is a SAS/SATA backplane?...

  • Linux mint on my G780 - microphone not working

Hi, I just have installed linux mint on my new G780. The microphone doesn't  work. When I tried to test it (audio) the bar didn't react to sound. Speakers work fine.
Can it be a faulty driver (?) with linux mint, should I bother to reinstall the operating system? Or does it rather look like the microphone is not functioning at all - and I should look at guarantee options?
    Thanks

Most likely not a hardware problem if the machine is brand new.
Some of the most common issues with Linux and laptops are sound, wireless, and graphics--partly because many drivers are more frequently created after the hardware is released than with other OSes.
I have had microphone issues as well with Linux and laptops (including Lenovo).  I would recommend looking up specs on your machine, specifically the microphone, and doing a web search for your particular machine, microphone, and linux mint.
I don't remember the specific solution, as it has occurred a few times.  It was some combination of my solution was to wait overnight (for some reason this helps to trigger some updates), install any/all updates, make sure I included contrib and non-free in my software sources/repositories, and test a few sound mixer programs to see which, if any, helped.
Also, I installed anything in software manager that said Lenovo, IBM, or Thinkpad.

  • Distorted microphone with Linux mint in Lenovo G50-70

I have installed Linux Mint 17.1 in Lenovo B590 and microphone works perfectly. I installed Linux Mint on a new Lenovo g50-70, microphone works low and very distorted.
I've adjusted pavucontrol and I deleted to zero right channel mic, works perfectly for seconds but settings are deleted for auto adjusting mic and right channel is activated again. Then microphone works with distortion again.
    Thank you for your attention.

    Hi roberto-
Yes, its a shame. I have also contacted lenovo support hoping that they can sort out this problem. However, first response from them was 'contact your internet service provider since internet connectivity goes down'! :-/ I am hoping I have been able to get through to them now at least about where the problem lies. I wonder if anyone has tried using the laptop with the same broadcom wireless adapter with some other version of OS (linux, windows 7 etc.) and whether they still face the same problem. I haven't tried that yet. If this is just an OS / driver issue I hope someone somewhere is working on a fix! If not, I guess the only other solution would be to get an external USB wifi adapter but that is not something one would want to do when you buy a brand new Lenovo laptop. This was a big let down for me.
