Adding WRE54G to network

This is more of a generalized gripe than anything else. I wonder if anyone from linksys ever reads these forums.
I have found the setup tool for the WRE to be a POS. It will not run on my Win XP Pro box. It starts, asks me to verify the wireless card address, says "configuring network connection" and then disappears from view -- but, it's still in the process list in task manager.
It will run on my other wireless, a laptop with Win 2K Pro on it. However, trying to configure the RE is a hopeless exercise in frustration. The setup tool continually kills the wireless card connection -- which comes back up 10-15 seconds later -- it's using to configure the RE, with the result that at the end of the process, it announces "unable to obtain setup confirmation." Of course it's unable, the wireless connection is down! Although the RE shows two blue lights at the end of this process, it's inaccessible on the assigned IP via a browser. And, if I unplug it and take it to its assigned home, the settings are lost and I'm back to a red link light.
I'm sitting six feet from the router and the RE is half way between us.
I know what I have to do -- I have been through this crap before, with my other RE. I have to take down the network, disable WEP, set all the IP addresses back to default 192.168.*.* addresses, configure the RE and then change all the fricking addresses back to the normal network address range and reset WEP. What a load of BS. There is no sound reason on God's earth that it should be this much work to install an extender.
The docs claim, and the tool pretends, that it can add the RE to the network using my WEP settings. The process is broken. It does not work. It's been broken for years. Why doesn't linksys fix it?
This is a 100% linksys network -- 2 PC cards, 1 PCI card, router and now 2 RE. I started down this road because I was really happy with the PC card in my laptop. But that is the only piece of linksys hardware that has been 100% for me. And, that broken setup tool just ices the cake.
Of course, competitive products might be even more broken that linksys. I may never know. But if i ever have to buy and install another wireless network, i'll sure be trying something new.
Thanks for your time.

My WRE54G on the other hand works, with the different IP segment you have, you should have manually went in on the setup page of the WRE54G while on static IP on the pc, then after changing the WRE54G IP and saving it to follow my network range, I simply use the Autoconfig button on the device while placing it beside the router...and presto! My wireless is repeated...lotsa things may disrupt wireless connection if that is the case, you would need to know by isolation if the wireless connection is lost on the router (really?) or the range expander, if one causes it, change frequency, resort to a firmware upgrade if all else fails.... Though it may be troublesome for others, mine works perfectly on the network setup that I have, i don't have 2.4GHZ phones so I dont encounter that much problem... I guess sometimes I'm lucky... my mom enjoys her wireless connection next on the house next to mine...

how to have my dial up connection added to the network utility program for monitoring? though i am connected by dial-up, the connection is not monitored by the utility program. the drop down box there does not show the modem at all. ?

Huh? I don't understand what you are asking. I just pulled up the network utility and I don't see what kind of connection monitoring it does for any kind of connection? What kind of information are you looking to obtain? What problem are you interested in solving by having your question answered?

  • When adding WRE54G to wireless network incompatible with Airport Express

I added a Linksys WRE54G to expand my network to a Powerbook G4 laptop with a weak signal. When I connect the wireless expander, I no longer see the Airport express in the airport utility. I cannot access the printer or itunes speakers attached to the airport express. When I power off the expander and have a weaker signal, the airport express is available again. I don't know how to configure the wireless expander to work with airport express, and if I try to create a WDS network with the airport express (currently unsuccessful), then I believe I will lose itunes support (and maybe the printer?).
Does anyone know how to configure the WRE54G so that I can still see the airport express on my network?
    Thanks,

I was having the same problems. Try this link, someone seems to have solved it.

  • Airport extreme connection problem after adding computer to network

just added new imac to my network and for some reason my older imac {dome desktop} seems to have stopped recognizing the AEBS. the older imac was hooked up to the AEBS by ethernet and when i moved it across the room it fails to read the AEBS. I had installed the airport card a few mos ago and i know it worked...although most recently was ethernet connected. I cannot be certain the new computer addition is even related but seems to be. Have checked all the airport utility settings and see no issues. I did fool around with some network sharing features on the imacs so ? if that can create issue sharing the AEBS. Interestingly the affected imac does detect the AEBS in the utility app but times out when attempting to connect. also think i may have done recent AEBS download upgrade and see threads related to that as poss issue . have reverted back to older AEBS software without success. new ibook and new imac detect/connect without problem. Any thoughts out there??? thx for any help.

Is your AEBS configured to create an 802.11g compatible network? It must be for the iMac G4 to connect.
What channel is the AEBS configured to use?
If the AirPort Extreme card in your iMac G4 is from the US it can only use the channels between 1 and 11. If your AEBS is from somewhere else in the world it can use other channels which are not available for use with equipment from the US.
If your AEBS is not using a channel between 1 and 11, change it and see if your iMac G4 can connect.

  • Can I configure a wireless home network with two cable routers (both with separate connections to the same cable company)?  Issue is poor signal strength even with multiple Airport Expresses added to the network.

I have a wireless home network consisting of a time capsule, two airport expresses and a cable modem.  Even with this configuration I get a very weak signal in much of be condo - the walls, etc. are solid concrete. I want to see if I can add another separately connected cable modem and connect one of the existing airport express to it by Ethernet cable.  If so, this would give me two wired hubs and greatly improve signal strength. I do not know if this configuration will in fact work or if I will just wind up with two, separate and unrelateable networks.  Unfortunately, there is no way to run any additional Ethernet cable and I doubt simply adding more Airport Express will help. Thanks.

Try Ethernet over Power adapters.. these are very popular for your kind of environment.. being able to make non-wireless link to another area where you can setup a wireless access point.
Airport Express are not great for wireless power.. if you really have issues with wireless strength in a bad environment apple stuff is not the way to go.
    The comparison chart here.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn?see=P_F
This is their worst test location you can also see averages.. the latest airport extreme.. is there a long way down.. and that is a much better wireless device than Airport Express.
The Ubiquiti power AP is small cheap and designed for precisely this duty.. useless in an apple wireless network.. you will need to run ethernet or EOP adapters back to the main router.. but if the normal omni directional antennas don't provide enough signal you can get directional ones.. I suspect you can cover your whole apartment with a pair of these and high gain directional antenna.

  • WRT300N and deleting/adding computers to network

Had an established wireless network that was working fine (setup of LinkSys was done on the laptop, desktop was added to network). THen had to re-install Windows on the desktop. I thought I could just re-connect the desktop in EasyLink Advisor, and it seemed to be working. However, every time I reboot the desktop, the wireless LinkSys connection is gone! (The wireless card is working fine--just the connection to my home network is being screwy on the desktop.) I have to manually install the LinkSys executable on the desktop from a jump drive each time I start my computer. THen the wireless functionality works just fine. Why is the desktop losing that information? Do I need to delete the desktop information in EasyLink Advisor (although can't see how to do that if so), and then re-establish the link with the desktop again? Thanks for feedback.

On your desktop, you must be using another Wireless Connection Software/Utility that conflicts with the default Windows Wireless Connection(called WZC), you need to disable the other Wireless Connection Software/Utility and use the default Windows Wireless Connection to avoid any such conflicts...
Any such Wireless Utility could be found in your Programs menu...

  • ITunes Locking when Adding Files Across Network

I just made the switch from windows to Mac and I seem to be having issues with iTunes. My main computer used to be a PC and I just purchased a Macbook Air. I have a pretty large media library (1.5TB) and there was no way I could house that on the air so I repurposed my PC as a file server. I then created alias's to each media file on the PC (i.e. Video, Music (320), Music (ALAC), Pictures,eBooks, etc..).
I set the library in iTunes to be in the local music file on the mac and I also placed the alias's in the music file. I made sure to unflag the two "let itunes do everything" flags. I then started adding the alias's in one by one. Video (which is huge), Pictures, ALAC music all added with no fuss.. slow as .... but they worked. I then tried to add the music file containing MP3s. Not only did it creep, it locked up constantly. I had a beach ball almost constantly. I killed the add process and tried again.. same thing. I then rebooted both machines and the same thing. At this point I am thinking my files was corrupt so I loaded iTunes on the PC and had no issues adding the files.
I then reloaded iTunes on the mac. No good. Now when I say I was getting beach balls I really mean it. I have never in my long life of dealing with PCs ever seen something freeze up and lock completely so often. It is so bad it is crashing finder and I have to power it down. No I know that iTunes is not the best thing that Apple has ever made (trying to be nice) but this is silly.
Being persistant I decided to bypass the PC and I went and bought a Time Capsule. Now not only does it still crash the files that do work are added REALLY slowly (and accessed a a pitiful rate). Is the hard drive on the TC that slow?? Time Machine seems to work ok.
So here I am. I have files that I have confirmed are functional on two PCs using iTunes for windows and one of them is completely crashing my mac. I can not house this media on the air. 1.5TB will not fit in a 256GB drive for obvious reasons. There are no strange and funky files just plain old MP3s.
Does anyone have suggestion as to what I can do? I have to be honest.. at this point I am rather ******. It should not take two days to add MP3s. I am afraid my journey into the world of OS X is about to end. If I didn't have an iPad & iPhone I would use an alternative player but I do and I am stuck.

Yes, I am repling to my own thread The problem only lies with MP3s from a network drive on a mac (lion). This problem can't be duplicated on a windows machine which is sorta madding. I converted 500 tracks to AAC and the problem went away and I have never had an issue with ALAC. No, I am not going to convert 50k tracks to AAC.
I have been watching the system log as the MP3s import and I keep getting this error:
    "iTunes[1879]: _AMDDeviceAttachedCallbackv3 (thread 0x11309c000): Device 'AMDevice 0x7fd554add380 {UDID = b407ece7782174048d0ee3136beafc5a111e9156, device ID = 17, FullServiceName = a4:d1:d2:76:fe:2d@fe80::a6d1:d2ff:fe76:fe2d._apple-"

  • SharePoint adding, then removing Network Service to local groups

After upgrading our two server farm to SharePoint 2010, SP2, April 2014 CU, we've noticed activity in our event log when the Timer Service restarts daily and when FIM syncs run.  It looks like SharePoint is adding the Network Service account to
the local groups IIS_IUSRS and WSS_WPG, then removing it a little later on.
Does anyone know why this happens?  Is it expected activity or a bug with the version we are running?
Thanks in advance for your time- Rob

    Hi Rob,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to know why SharePoint adds and removes the Network Service account to local groups.
Per the thread below, it seems like it is an internal SharePoint process and SharePoint adds this user as a test to validate whether it has the rights necessary to add users to local groups.

  • PSE 9 (Win7) Organizer won't "copy" when adding images from network

First, bringing images into PSE 9 Organizer works as expected from cameras, memory cards, etc. The file is copied from the original source onto the drive with the catalog.
But, I simply cannot get a file "copied" from its original location when bringing it into the PSE 9 catalog under Windows 7 (64-bit) if the source location is on another computer "seen" via Windows Homegroup network.
I do the following from the Organizer:
    1) File-Get Photos and Videos-From Files and Folders
    2) I browse to the Homegroup folder that has the file, and highlight it. (By the way, it takes several attempts of moving the mouse over the file name before the preview appears and the file is actually selected.)
    3) At this point I would expect the "Copy Files on Import" option to be available, but it is greyed-out and not checkable.
    4) If I select Open or Get Media, the file does go into the Organizer, but the file location is still the Homegroup network drive. As soon as the source computer is off-line, the Organizer link is lost, and I can't use the file.
Why is the "Copy Files on Import" option never available??
    Here's what it looks like:

What I am trying to do is to use Organizer to centralize, on one hard drive, images from various other computers in my Windows 7 Homegroup that may or may not be on when I need the images. A thumbnail in the Organizer that points to an offline source is not terribly useful.
My problem could be fixed, as well as the overall usefulness of Organizer improved, by the simple enabling of the copy option even when another harddrive or network drive is the source. In this way, both the "always-on" and "never-on" situations could be accommodated.
My solution was to copy the files in question to an SD card, walk the card over to my main computer, and then bring them into the catalog (which actually copies the files to the hard drive, which was my objective in the first place).

  • Adding printer to network

    I am a broken man
I purchased a HP Photosmart C4400 printer and have it working when connected directly to my iMac however when I try to connect it to my airport express via USB and then try to print, I just get a message saying 'printer offline'...
My macbook pro and powerbook can't print off the network either
I see from other similar topics that other HP C4400 users have had similar issues and they somehow seem to have resolved it by using time capsule / bonjour, but I've never used time capsule (and have no desire to) and can't find bonjour anywhere.
My old epson connected onto the express real easy and was never difficult to print from (wish I'd stuck with that now, but wanterd to add the HP C4400 scanner)...
    SIGH!
    ANYBODY?

Hello sjvnealewired. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at this iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link.
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help:
o Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if the printer you are interested in is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • Adding artwork over network

I get a strange thing: my library (of pretty much 160 kbps AAC) is on a network drive; currently ~10mbps link. If I import to the library on that drive: all good.
However if I then add artwork, then typically the smaller songs (2 minutes or less, although this is just a guide) become unplayable and I have to burn them again. If I import them locally, add artwork and then drag them over to the network drive later, everything's fine.
Does anyone else get this? If not are you accessing your library over a 100mbps link or something similarly faster than mine?
    Cheers,
    Trystan

I sort of answered my own quetion - artwork for shared music that is actually playing is displayed by clicking on the triangle in the bar above artwork box, but arwork is not shown for music that is simply selected. This is likely due to increased bandwidth of need to transfer images over network; may well disappear as higher-bandwidth home networks become more common. I hope this helps someone.

  • Adding AE to network via Ethernet...trying to fix airtunes drop outs....

I have a older Time Capsule (not simultaneous dual band) in my home office, and two older AE's (not N) that I use to wirelessly extend my network. Overall it works OK, though maybe not as speedy as it could be.
Lately, my airtunes streaming has been a bit erratic. Sometimes it works fine, other times it has a lot of drop outs. I use airtunes on both my AE's. On my "living room" AE, I use a digital connection to a high end DAC/preamp. On my "garage" AE I use an analog connection to a boombox. Both these setups experience intermittent dropouts.
I could use ethernet to connect my living room AE to my LAN, since I have a wired connection at that location. I can not do that on my garage AE.
First question is would a wired connection be more stable for airtunes? Since this problem may be associated with the Snow Leopard upgrade....I wonder if I'm wasting my time on the specifics of the network.
Second question: when I tried to set up the AE for a wired connection, It doesn't give me the "extend the network via ethernet" option in Airport utility. It only gives me the "extend network wirelessly" option. I moved the AE to the office and connected it directly to the time capsule (to make sure the wired network wasn't the issue) and I still am not given the option to do that.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks
    Fabian

    Inkjet....
Thanks for that tidbit. I'll try to remove my wireless AE from the loop and see if the wired AE works any better.
I'm getting the feeling though that this is an iTunes/OS issue, not a network issue. Reading the other threads on this topic seem all involve the upgrade to SL and/or iTunes 9.
As an aside, since my original post on this, I've replaced both the older AE's with the new n versions. I still use the older TC.
Also, I've used AirRadar to examine the "interference" issue. It shows very low levels of interference (though I'm not sure what is acceptable). No other local networks show up which are on the channel I'm using. Again, I just don't think its the network.
Finally, I don't think I'll go to the powerline transmission route. If wired were the answer, I'll find a way to get ethernet to the second AE. However, it needs to be the answer before going through the exercise.

  • Adding Shortcuts to network drives

Is it possible in 10.5 to make a shortcut to a shared drive on networked pc or mac?

Yes. Open it in Finder, then drag the icon under the Devices section on the left.
If you want it to automatically load, you can add it to your Login Items (under Sys Prefs > Accounts).

  • How do I stop iTunes from adding music on network shares?

I find no way to stop iTunes from looking at network shares and therefore I have 2 copies of all mu music. I have a home network server and have a backup of my ripped music there. But I darn well don't want to have two copies showing up in iTunes and on my iPod.
I find no options in preferences that seem to be related. Everything is off in the Sharing tab. what am I missing?

    Soulgazer,
If you are downloading from the iTunes Store, the song will always go to your iTunes library.
If you are downloading from another website, the behavior is controlled by a setting in your browser.  For example, if you use Firefox, go to Options > Applications and make sure that the MP3s are set for "Always Ask."  By doing this, the songs will be downloaded to your computer, but no action will be taked until you do something manually.
