Additional Application Server

Hello All!
I'd like to open a new discussion about adding a new application server to enhance the performance of my production system.
At the implementation, we had only two company codes, but nowadays we have added a new business unit in our SAP system as a new company code. This caused an increase of response time only at closing period (about the 2nd to 3rd business day for CO users) and casually at another time.
This is causing an increase of response time from 600-700ms to 2100ms at the more critical period of day, and consequently dissatisfaction from all users.
On July, we're implementing a new business unit, a new company code, then, a new CO closing procedures. I think it will increase more the response time.
What are your opinion about this case? May I really think about installing an application server to provide more CPU power, even for a short period of the month?

if your CPU is often 100%, you have to do something !
There is a very interesting part in WRKSYSSTS - the DB-capacity !
How high is that while the CPU is at 95%+ ?
If this is low, the appl server will help, if not, the SQL is the issue as you are in fear of ...
Why is the DB-time high, even when an appl server might help ?
The db time ALWAYS becomes high, when the CPU is at 100%, because then it just takes long to process each statement ...
But, as said above, it could even be, that the resources are eaten by SQL ...
=> we need the following figure (not on a second base, but several minutes:

We're installing NW 7.3 High Availability System in our landscape, sucessfully we installed First Cluster Node, Database Instance, Additional Cluster Node and Primary Application Server Instance. You're right, if the installation unable to create the user and folder in the node2 means... your suggestion is applicable but I crossed those phase... I'm in the phase of "Install Instance basics of J01".
Do you need to do the copy and paste method, eventhough we're in Install Instance basics of J01 phase.

We have an existing CE 7.11 system installed. After installation, we have updated the SPS level to 04 recently. The CE 7.11 system is already part of a NWDI track configuration since many months and developers are already using since then.
Now, we need to install an additional application server (dialog instance) for the same system.
I want to know: Do I need to carry out any further post-installation steps after installation of the new app server?
Does it matter that the system is already at a certain SPS level including an updated kernel? Will there be any issues at all?
Basically, what else should I do after the installation of the app server is completed?

Now I want to add one more application server on Windows Server which will communicate with my existing DB Server. Will it be possible to implement this scenario. Installation of Additional Application Server

Dear Gurus,
We are running on ECC6 SR2, Oracle 10g and AIX 5.3 and our HW (IBM) was desgined for 60 users and since 3 months now we have increased our user strenght to 115 users for which our server is not able to take the load.
So we have decided for a Dialog instance and our new server is as follows
HP GL380 series server ,
6GB RAM,
2 x 146 gb HDD,
Windows 2003 Server with SP2
Now my question is that can we have our Dialog instance on Windows while our Central Instance is running on AIX?
How can i divert 30-40 users to the new dialog instance?
And is there any easy install document for this procedure?
Kindly help me as this is my first time activity.

Hi,

This is wrong : it is possible !
It is perfectly possible to have the CI on AIX and the dialog instances on Windows.
You just need a shared directory between them which means, usually, SAMBA on AIX.
The specific programs (especially interface programs) have to be aware of this. For exemple, it is need to define logical paths with transaction FILE, with physical paths both for windows and Unix.

after a huge Problems, i was able to install the Application Server,
but it wouldn't start up.
At SAPInst Phase "Install instance basis" the SAP Service doesn't start.
Log Browser show errors like
Execution of command "C:\usr\sap\.......
finished with return code -1. Service not started.
On the Windows EventViewer are these errors
The description for EventID (0) Source (SAP???_??) cannot be found. The local
computer may not have the nessesary registry information or message DLL files to display
messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE=flag
to retrieve the description. See Help and Support for details. The following information is
part of the event:
Cannot open Profile on
<SAPHOST>\sapmnt\<SID>\SYS\profile\START_D<instance>_<localhost>
<..> are correct Values in error message. How ever, the Service is installed with user SAPSe<SID>.
Currently, i'm logged on as <SID>adm. I can map these path via Explorer.exe without any logon promts.
I can see and open the file. I added the User SAPSe<SID> to the folder and file permissions and
gave all rights, but it doesn't work.
Any ideas?

Start of application server fails (NW PI 7.1 on a Linux SLES10 + VMWARE)

I'm trying to install an additional application server for a PI 7.1 installation (based on NW 7.1 kernel).
Start of Java FrameWork fails with a message like "Kernel not suitable"
I used a kernel UC LNX X86_64 for this application server
This application is hosted on Linux SLES10 + VMWARE under.
The Central instance is on a HPUX IA64.
I can provide more log if needed.

Hello my friend
This is 3-tier heterogeneous you're installing. When installing addition application servers, it'll load kernel from CI which is a different OS. So you need to copy the right kernel in to directory /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/uc/<platform> on CI before start installing DI. Please refer to note 1112809 for details.

SAP Additional App Server unable to recognize sybase DB on PAS

We have Primary App Server(PAS) + DB installed on a single box which is up and running fine, now we are trying to install an additional application server(AAS) and we have NFS mounted /sapmnt/SID and /usr/sap/trans from PAS onto the Addtln App Server but got some error when SWPM is starting the instance. Both the servers are on the same network and hence all the ports will be open already.

LSMW with CI on System i and an additional Windows Application Server 4.70

Hi together,
I have a really tricky problem to realize a parallel processing LSMW Workload.
In truth it isn't a problem to the parallel processing. It is a problem, how to declare the paths to the input files.
The LSMW is splittet in four steps:
1. Read data
2. Convert Data
3. Creating Batch Input File (IDOCS)
4. Start Direct Input Program
The first three points are using file in the IFS.
In the 13 points of LSMW there is point " 7 Specify Files" where I can customize paths to the real existing input and output-Files, which are stored at the IFS on System i.
For example:
Legacy Data          On the R/3 server (application server)
    Materialtexte                  /usr/sap/direct/lsmw/material/matsta_text.txt
This works fine.
Now we have added a Windows Applications Server in front of the 2-Tier enviroment to have more performance to the BTC workprocesses. Now we have two servers shown in sm51. One is the central instance (CI) and the other is the application server (AS), which is working together with the CI.
<b>Now the big bug:</b> In the LSMW transaction, you can submit the job to batch (BTC) and can't choose the server (Instance) where the batchjob should run. So, sometimes the batchjob runs on the CI (iSeries) and sometimes the batchjob runs on the application server.
But this is the problem, because the files in the IFS are only stored at IFS on iSeries. And if the Job runs at the application-server, the files is not found, and the job end abnormal.
Now I tried to find a good solution. So I want to declare a patch in LSMW, that the batchjob is running successful at CI and AS.
So I tried:
\iSeriesshareusrsapdirectlsmwmaterialmatsta_text.txt
But this is not really working, because the SAP WP can't find this file with this path.
There is a second possibility: Not to submit the batchjobs by pressing F9 in the transaction LSMW but making an extra job in sm36 for each job. Not very smart !
There is a third possibility: To duplicate the import Files to each Windows Application Server. Then it is possible to submit by pressing F9, whatever server will be used.
So my question is: What is the right way? There must be some poeple in the world who have done a migration with iSeries an Windows Application Server together? Or not?

Windows doesn't understand forward slashes, you need to use backslashes all way:
Try the following on one of the application servers:
Start - execute
notepad \iSeriesshareusrsapdirectlsmwmaterialmatsta_text.txt
If you can open the file, that's the way to go.
You'd need to check in your program, whether the job is been executed on Windows or non-windows and substitute the slashes accordingly.

hi if i am using below code with date time stamp the file is downloaded to the application server correctly and each time i execut eht program a difference file is generated as date time stamp differs each time but
whne i remove the date time stamp ie sy-datum and sy-uzeit as we dont need to display the date time stamp with the file each time i execute the program a file is generated but it overwrites the ealier existing file please suggest as each time it shoul generate a new file....

first of all decide you have to overwrite the existing file or you want to create the new, i think the answer is there in your query itself, if you want to create new then concatenate the date and time, else don't do that.
below are the additions we can use while opening the data set.

Apex Listener vs. Oracle Application Server... advantages?

Are there advantages to installing Apex Listener over using an existing Oracle Application Server instance to serve Apex applications?
We have an existing application server instance in production. Would introducing Apex Listener and the extra overhead be of any advantage?

Are there advantages to installing Apex Listener over using an existing Oracle Application Server instance to serve Apex applications?APEX Listener introduces some additional features, such as Resource Templates, but lacks some others. Some people might want to migrate from OAS to another JEE Container that doesn't come along with a OHS/mod_plsql. Depending on the JEE Container, you could use AJP for load balancing, avoiding plain HTTP through a firewall, etc.
Would introducing Apex Listener and the extra overhead be of any advantage?The "extra overhead" may be smaller than you think. If you don't need the HTTP_Server component any longer, but can just deploy APEX Listener on the OC4J of your OAS, you might even save some bytes.

Download files from application server - unknown file name

Hello everybody,
I am working on a report allowing users to download XML files from the application server. All these XML files are created by the SAP system and their names can be found in a table. I can simply use OPEN DATASET for these files, put all file content to a buffer and send them to the GUI with CALL METHOD cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download.
The problem is now that some files are touched by an external document management system. These files are moved to another directory and timestamped. The first is no problem since the folder name is always the same and can be replaced before the OPEN DATASET statement. But additionally, the file gets a timestamp, when the filename was xyz.xml before, it now gets xyz.xml.01012008123456123456. As I cannot try all possible values (mircoseconds!), I need a way to search for the right filename on the application server. Is there a function module for this available?
It can always be stated that the former name (xyz.xml) is still a unique prefix, so I don't have to worry that xyz.xml.* will return multiple files.
