Additional firewire port needed for Canopus

I have always used a Canopus to change analog video as I download onto my Mac G5 for video editing in iMovie. I recently replaced one that quit on me and now new one is not working right. Both analog and digital lights stay on, rather than one or the other depending on my need. I took it back and exchanged thinking it was broken. The second one did the same thing. Apple store said to try the firewire in the back of the tower as front one may not be working. I do not have one in the back that is not in use. Anyone have any advice?

You could try using a firewire hub like [this one|http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006BHCEK].
Capturing video using a hub is not really recommended, but at least you would be able to leave everything connected, and do some troubleshooting.

  • Adding additional firewire ports?

Does anybody know if you can additional firewire ports to my macbook pro?
    Thanks,
    kidboy

Macbook pro should have 1 firewire 400 (1394a) and 1 firewire 800 (1394b) so you can just get a cable that goes 800to400 and use that 1394b jack. Or you can get an external hard drive box that has a second firewire port on it to pass through to another device. Failing that, get a firewire hub and poof lots of ports.
    And yes, daisy chain.

  • G5 Firewire-ports poor for audio interfaces??

Hello. I have reason to believe that the FireWire-ports on the new G5:s are not really stable enough to handle an audio interface. Storage devices are okay (much less complex protocol).
My G5 constantly loses contact with my Digi 002R interface, or chokes on CPU even on low level usage, and on the Pro Tools forum many users have experienced this. The G4:s had much more stable FW-ports!
For some users it helps to use only one of the two FW400-ports, not both.
Is this a known issue? Has Apple ever commented on this? Does the warranty cover this? (It should)
    Niljam, new to this forum

I recently switched from a MOTU 828 running off the FW400 connector on the back of my G5 to a Yamaha mLan-based solution.
When I switched to mLan, admittedly running potentially tons more channels in/out, the internal FW bus "fell over" (connector on the front and the 400 and 800 connectors are all on the same bus no matter it turns out).
I popped a PCI firewire card and the audio stuff worked MUCH better, it was immediate. That's not to say that things work perfectly now... if the machine has been in sleep mode for a while, mLan's autoconnector hangs quite severely, whereby it's not even possible to force quit it... really ugly actually.
at any rate... for 8 in/out, certainly on MOTU, the on-board FW will "do", but it's probably best to get another FW card, especially if you're going to put sample libraries etc on an external FW drive, then you'd want that to be separate from the audio streams...
    hope this helps!

  • IMac FireWire port used for USB device

I have a 27" iMac which of course has a FireWire port, but I don't own any external FireWire devices. I'd like to put that empty port to use as a USB port to connect an external storage device. Is there a cable, converter, or adapter made to do that?

Common user always looks at the bottom line price on computer peripherals and USB devices are always cheaper. USB 2.0, in theory, should be faster than FireWire 400, but they usually aren't because of the way USB transfers data in short bursts or packets of data. FireWire 400 and 800 drives are faster as they transmit data in a more continuous, constant and reliable stream of data.
This is why devices that use FireWire or have both USB and FireWire connections are always more expensive.
So, those users never use the FireWire port.
FireWire is faster for external hard drives, especially data transfers and for booting and running a Mac from an external FireWire drive. FireWire optical drives are faster. FireWire audio devices and interface devices are even faster and more reliable than USB.
FireWire is more expensive, but more reliable data transfer protocol.
There is no way to bridge the two device protocols . It's either one or the other. The masses always choose the cheaper USB devices.
The masses don't care about faster and consistent data transfer rates or  better reliability.
Especially if a user isn't some sort of creative like a graphics, designer, Illustrator, photographer, digital painer/3D-CGI Artist, engineer, audio or video/multimedia professional.

  • Firewall ports needed for remote management?

    Hey guys,
Does anyone know the ports needed so that I can remotely connect to other Win7 computer through compmgmt.msc, regedit, msinfo32, remote rsop.msc, etc?  I think those are just rpc connections, but not sure.  Is it tcp 135?
    Thanks,

    Hi Dan,
Based on my research, remote desktop connections are via RDP instead of RPC, so the ports for Remote Desktop to work, 3389 and 443 are used mostly.

  • What Network Firewall Ports Needed For Music Store?

My PC is on a network that is firewalled to the the Internet. All ports are blocked except for those explicitely enabled, such as port 25 for E-mail, port 80 for browsing, etc.
When the Windows Firewall is disabled, my PC cannot get past the the Music Store's home page. All links are inoperative.
When I connect my PC to another router/firewall, that bypasses my network's firewall, I can navigate the music store.
I believe I have a blocked port issue when the PC is connected to my network.
Can anyone tell me what Internet/TCP ports I need to have open for the iTunes music store and for QuickTime?
    Thanks for the assist.
    Regards.

    hiya!
Since you say that iTunes is using standard browser ports, then perhaps it's my network's Proxy Server that iTunes doesn't work well with.
it might be worth checking on these possibilities:
iTunes for Windows can't access the Internet if proxy settings are incorrect

    X-Requested-With: XMLHttpRequest

    //ODataConsumer c = ODataConsumer.create(Constants.flightSVC);

PS. TCPGW tool (note 856597) is an effective way to trouble shoot HTTP API's

    Hi Genady,
    Thanks for reply.
I am not an expert in this area but I will walk you through why I am questioning the need for this particular header value, feel free to correct me where I am wrong.
XMLHttpRequest (XHR) is an API available to browser scripting languages like javascript.
First off I have to put the request in the header when using a Java or .Net client, these clients have nothing to do with XHR.
Secondly without JSON formatted feeds and forgetting about REST test clients and the like, you are left with XML calls, using XHR with XML you have to follow the Same-Origin-Policy, that is the code and the client have to reside on the same domain, not much room for Cross-Site Request Forgery unless you use a server side proxy.

  • DA server within a DMZ - ports needed for internal network

    Hi,
I'm planning on adding a domain joined DA server in my DMZ. The DA server will have 2 NICs, one for the internal network and the other for the external. I'll be using two consecutive public IPv4 addresses.
On my external firewall I'll be opening the following ports for my DA server:
    - Port 443 inbound and outbound
    - UDP 3544 inbound and outbound.
On my Juniper firewall between the internal network and DMZ I'll be opening the following bi directional ports between my DC and DA server:
    - IP Protocol 41 inbound and outbound.
     TCP/UDP 53, 88, 3389, 389, 443, 445, 636, 3268, 3269
Am I right in thinking that in order for my DA clients to reach file shares (for example) I need to ensure that the required protocol and ports are open between my DA server and my file share (i.e. 443)? Doesn't this open a whole load of security holes?
    Thanks
    IT Support/Everything

Hi there - in a similar scenario on many customer sites i have done the following configurations on the Internal Firewalls
Internal IP of the DA Server ---> allow all traffic to selected VLAN's
The above rule is restricting traffic from the DA Server to the required VLAN's / Networks you specify, The reasoning being is that Direct Access requires full connectivity to your apps / infrastructure.

  • Additional ethernet ports needed with AEBS

Hi everyone. I have an AEBS in my office at home. I seem to have too many devices in the house that need to be connected to the network. Many use wireless, but in some locations (e.g., my kids bedrooms) wireless does not work well (connection drops frequently). Also, I have a new Blu-ray player in the family room downstairs but no wired connection is there. I could get wired connections to the kids' rooms, but the AEBS only has 3 ports and all 3 are already used.
Is there a way to add more wired connections to the AEBS (e.g., another router/AEBS)?
I suspect an Airport Extreme in the kids' rooms might help, but I'd have to buy 2 of them (1 for each room) and I'm concerned that the signal would still be poor (I am not very familiar with the AX and whether they are the right device or not). And maybe the signal would be better (pairing Apple products together rather than 2 different manufacturers).
Also, would an AX would work downstairs for the Blu-ray? I could probably get a wired connection there, too, but wireless would be easier.
    Thanks in advance...
    Larry

    +What does the "(n)" refer to?+
This refers to whether the AEBS is an older "g" device or a newer "n" device. "n" wireless is quite a bit faster than the older "g" wireless.
Open AirPort Utility and click on your device on the left. Look at the window at the right. If will say AirPort Utility has found an AirPort Extreme(n) if you have a newer "n" device. If you don't, it will say Airport Utility......Airport Extreme.
    +Is that the "extend" option?+
An Airport Extreme(n) has the option to "extend" using wireless. The older version does not.
If you use an ethernet cable or ethernet powerline adapters, the "extend" feature is not used. This is only used when the devices connect using wireless.
+How much speed would I be sacrificing if I went with an ethernet powerline adapters vs. hard wired connection?+
If you have the AirPort Extreme(n) it is capable of Gigabit speeds. You will get this speed if you use CAT5e or CAT6 ethernet cabling. The newest (and most expensive $150-175 a pair) powerline adapters offer performance that is very, very close to this level. By comparison, a very good wireless setup will offer perhaps one third of this capability and is subject to interference and the inevitable drop outs.
Assuming you have good, modern electrical wiring the adapters will work very well providing that the pair is on the same master electrical circuit. In other words, if you have one power meter, you have one master electrical circuit.
I've use both ethernet cabling and powerline adapters and they have offered virtually identical performance. But, it's not possible to predict how they will perform for you. I would recommend that you understand the store's return policy in case some unforeseen circumstance prevents the powerline adapters from functioning as expected.
I would still always recommend running the ethernet cable if it is possible. No one has ever regretted doing this.

  • Firewall ports needed for rpc error in powershell

In my enviroment we use several different DMZ's to host our servers in. This creates a situation where some of the computers in the domains are in different subnets.  I am trying to run a script in one domain in which all the computers are
in the same subnet except for 2. In this case there is a firewall between the two subnets i am describing. When i try and run my script i recieve the error below. I have verified the following ports are open on the firewall.
    TCP 5985, 5986, 445, 389    TCP\UDP 135
I have monitored our firewall and the ports being blocked when i run my script are TCP 4754 on one server and 5002 on the other. I believe these are DCOMM ports. What other ports or range of ports, or any other ports, do I need to open to resolve
the RPC error? I do not want to just open a bunch of unneeded ports between my DMZ's. I could just open these 2 ports and resolve the issue for now, but i am trying to make this a powershell friendly enviroment, if you take my meaning. I should mention all
local firewalls are turned off on the servers and the script runs fine on all other servers in the subnet.

Here is the DCOM firewall configuration document.  It should be given to your firewall admins and they need to pay special attention to setting up the DCOM port forwarding rules.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154596/en-us
There are also instructions on how to configure DCOM ports to work with WAN/Internet access issues.
If you are looking to obtain remote management over a WAN or the Internet you can and should set up WMF as it can be run over a fully encrypted HTTPS port and it does not require odd dynamic port allocation
    as does RPC.
You can also set up PowerShell Web Service which does not require dynamic ports and can be routed over any port.  It uses the browser to open a PowerShell session on a remote server that can have delegated access to other servers.  DCOM cannot
do this without making many dangerous changes t your network.

  • Suggestions for Firewire port allocation for DAW

    Hi all,
I'm wondering if I've got my rig set up the way it should be. Specifically I'm talking about how / where is the best way to hook up my Apogee Ensemble & external FW drive. My understanding is that my machine (PPC G5 Dual 2.3) has one FW 800 port on the front and two FW400 ports on the rear (one with a different type of connection than the other). Should I put both the Apogee and my external HD (that I use with Logic projects) on the 800 port? Should one go on the 400 in the rear? What would be the best set up?
    Thanks in advance!
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
You have your 400/800 mixed up...
Your G5 has two Firewire "400" ports (one on the front and one on the back), and one Firewire "800" port on the back.
    FW800 port...
    FW400 port...
Do you have a FW800 Drive, then that'd likely gain the most from the FW8oo port.
