Additional graphics card

i am thinking of purchasing a mac pro with the ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card but was also wandering could i add an additional Nvidia GT120 at a later date so that i can hook up 3 monitors??
is this possible or can you only do it if you use multiple GT120's?

well at first i was just going to hook it up to the 19 inch Hp monitor until i get enough and then yes i was thinking of getting a 24 inch apple monitor, with the possibility of hooking 2 up eventually and possibly a 27 inch dell as well, hence why i would need the second graphics card.
Im going to be using the mac pro mainly for audio recording and editing so the dell would be used as the main monitor and then the 24 inchers for the mixer window and plug in effects. (as well as because they look sweet lol)

  • An additional graphics card?

Hi, my mac pro is outfitted with the Radeon 4870 and I'd like to connect a 2nd 30 inch monitor to the computer. Do I need to install a 2nd graphics card? Or Can I use that MiniDisplay Port to Dual-Link DVI connector thing to "free ride" a 2nd 30 inch off the existing graphics card? And if I need to install a 2nd graphics card, must I be constrained only to getting another one of those GT 120 graphics cards? I will probably be connecting a Samsung 30" monitor and the majority of my work is photo proofing for professional output.

Two 30" monitors? I'd do some research on that before buying. I'm not sure the mini-display port is up for a thirty inch. With the lesser expensive adapters from Apple that I tried, I couldn't get the highest resolutions. the DVI connection will do fine, but that mini is problem prone. Even Apples literature on the card says it great for the 30" and their new 24". But no mention of another 30"
And I'm sure you would need this adapter for your best chance of getting it to work with two 30s.

  • I have pavilion a1324n, want to use additional graphic card. is anybody has good experience ?

pls advice which graphic card will support for better gaming on it? my budget is flexible. thx

Your HP Pavilion a1324n Desktop PC came with three (3) PCI slots (two available) and one (1) PCI Express x16 slot (one available).  Your choice of a graphics card will depend somewhat on what you are wanting to do.   Google "PCI-E graphics card" and see what's available or run by a local Best-Buy or some similar store.  I would not recommend anything high-end (i.e., expensive, <$50.00) on a unit with this much age that has relatively limited capabilities at least by today's standards.

  • Best Graphics Card for InDesign

I have seen a number of articles discussing the best graphics cards for a number of Adobe products such as Photshop, AfterEffects, SpeedGrade and Premiere Pro, but we have users that do not use these products extensively, but do use InDesign, Acrobat and Illustrator quite heavily, during prep for a paper catalogue.
Can anybody give me some advise on the best graphocs card for these particulat products please...? we are using CC.
    Thank you.

Only really need a graphics card for video editing - 3D modelling etc.
Even then the video softaware doesn't address the graphics card all that much.
It's only recently that video software and 3d software request access to the graphics RAM.
Mostly the processors these days have pretty good onboard graphics cards. That should be plenty for photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
It's more physical RAM that is required, not graphics cards.
I have 20gb RAM and i7 4770 processor with no additional graphics card.
    It works great.
Although a standalone graphics card would be better for video editing and 3d modelling.

In simple words the problems is that your mainboard is too old and don't have PCI-E slot...
Read the replies which you have above 1st..
As mates and MSI Tech as well notified you can't use PCI-E VGAs into your board...
You need a AGP one, here is examples of VGA's that can use:
    Ati: (few good choices)
    Radeon X1950PRO: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1146&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=137
    RX1650PRO-TD512: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1145&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=137
    Nvidia: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodpage2&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=136&cat3_no=139
At all you can use any AGP VGA... Just make sure that your PSU is powerfull enough.

  • Thinkpad t60 graphics card

Can I add an additional graphics card to my t60? It currently has an Intel 950 incorporated on the motherboard. Can an additional card be added and if so how do you do that and what type is recommended?

I believe that you could add a card via Advanced Dock, but you can't add one to the machine itself.

  • 13" or 15" is the quad core i7 and additional graphics worth the added money

I am looking to replace my 2009 13.3 macbook pro that I've upgraded with a new retina model. Regardless of which model I get it will have the 1 TB storage and 16GB Ram so really my only debate if I want to pay for the additional screen size, secondary graphics processor, and quad core cpu. I use the system for personal use, web browsing, email, itunes, and I play world of warcraft. However I also use this system for business and run parallels with a widows 7 installation running autocad (2D only), ePlan, excel, Rockwell Automation RSLogix suite and RSNetworx, as well as Siemans WinCC HMI software that utilizes a SQL Database. It is not uncommon for me to have all of the windows side apps running at once with multiple windows of each open.
I know the quad processor and the additional graphics card are better than what is available on the 13" retina but I'm not sure if I will see the difference with my usage. Should I go all the way and get the 15" with the i7 2.6GHz Quad core or settle for the 13" with the i7 2.8GHz Dual core?

    Hi eric,
In addition to the factors you mention (and yes, I think the dedicated GPU is significant), here are the GeekBench (the standard for measuring computer speed) scores for your two machines:
    13" 7899
    15" 13287
Thats a pretty big jump in performance, and yes you will notice it with most of the apps you mention, some more than others.

  • Mega 180 and Graphics Cards

Hi i just ordered an mega 180 im just wondering on the best graphics card i can put into this and also if i do will i lose my pci slot to put in the tv tunning card?

Quote from: Nulll on 06-June-05, 21:21:30
    Well i have.
I have the 9800 pro and the msi has NOT ENOUGH POWER. Sometimes the screen stays black but everything else loads great (you can hear windows tune). Turning the msi off and on untill you see the bootscreen works. Sometimes i have to boot 5 time in order to get a picture. I think the power core must be replaced for a more powerfull one. Don't know which one is best for this (suggestions welcome)
Sec; The card blocks the airflow, boosting the temp in the msi.
I really regret buying this msi 180, it just can't take the heat and high end video cards :(
It's wrong, sorry but the famous black screen at the windows load has nothing to see with the power. Check the forum and let's have a look at the anakin(?) thread. I got a 6800@GT, no power problem, and I used to have the black screen when I didn't have any additional graphic card. For the temp you'll have some modding but eveything's OK (my temp are max with dm3 or hl2 Proc: 60° Sys: 42° GC°: 65°).
    Keep trying, mega is cool.

  • Additional AGP card vs. onboard graphics card

In the latest weeks I've been gaming a little (I didn't use to) and tried some racing games such as Toca Race Driver 2, NFS 2 Underground, Colin Mcrae 2005, etc. All of them seem not to run smoothly with the onboard graphics. My question is: how much better will they run with a cheap graphics card? (I don't want to spend much money because I don't usually play games at all) Is the onboard card so crappy for gaming?
For the last question, I'd like to test my onboard graphics. What is the best (or a good) benchmark for this? 3DMark? Can I find benchmark results for the other graphics cards in other to compare them with mine?
As far as I know, the number of triangles generated by the GF4 MX is 34 million and, for example, a FX5600 XT can draw "only" 81 million (not so much difference, IMHO).
    Regards.

i have a ATI radeon 9800pro in my MSI mega 865 and its definitely a huge improvement...
i mainly use my MSI fro MediaPortal (http://mediaportal.sf.net) ..an all-in-one HTPC app ...it makes use of HardwareMotionCompensation, DirectXVideoAccelleratioon, as well as VMR9 ....
all these extra graphic features are not availible with the on-board MSI Intel Graphics Extreme 2 VPU ...
i now can play any number of new games on my MSI mega with this card...Half-Life 2 is brilliant
it makes a huge difference to overall speed of the MSI too

    The Crew - Launch Trailer

The PCI-E slots and bandwidth are enough for a two-way SLI setting.
Killer Ethernet, outstanding performance on internet access, especially reduce the lag issue.

With MSI Gaming series motherboard plus graphics card, you can enable a Gaming App to overclock CPU and GPU. There are 3 modes to choose.
6-month free trail of the XSplit game caster software, free bundled with MSI gaming motherboard and graphics card
Done with assembling, quiet nice color combination and clean cable arrangement.
An overview of the very gaming look system.
Some benchmark results before racing with The Crew.
CPU and GPU info on CPU-Z and GPU-Z applications:
    3DMark Fire Strike score: 6441
3DMark Fire Strike Extreme score: 3384
    3DMark Fire Strike Ultra score:1262
The excel performance proof the brand new 960 graphics card comes with good a high Cost/Performance Value.
Now, check out this test benchmark score of the renowned game “The Crew”.
The game presents an ultra-quality display, 60 Frames Per Second (FPS)
    FPS: Average frames is at:
    Frames: 3859 - Time: 76828ms - Avg: 50.229 - Min: 43 - Max: 56
The comments of the game for your reference:
There are many types of missions that can be chosen from the America’s map.
Street racing, high-speed collision, breakaway from police, sky jumps, zigzagging, etc… make the game quite dynamic.
Now, when it comes to multi-player matches, the performance has exceeded expectations. Perhaps, it is the killer Ethernet that’s working the magic. Thus, this game is highly recommended if you have the right rig.
The downside is that the display intricacy is not as refined as GTA V and in addition, the game FPS is limited at 60 FPS. However, the overall gaming flow and performance is better than good.
The user's comment for using MSI Gaming 5 motherboard and 960 graphics card:
(The following commends are translated from user’s article, does not represent the viewpoint of MSI) ^^
Recently, MSI GTX 960 just launched so the initial price tag is still adjustable.
According to the current product line, it seems like this GPU is going to replace 750Ti. So once all the stocks (750Ti) at the store empties, we are most likely to see a price drop on GTX960.
Once the price hits the sweet spot, it’s time to try out GTX960 SLI’s performance.
The CP value on MSI GTX960 and GAMING 5 MB is pretty high. But the XSplit software that comes with the product is a bit annoying since the authentication steps are divided into 2 parts to go through for using it.
    Enough said, anyways, GAME ON!

NVIDIA 960 card  + GAMING 5 motherboard = best bundle for budget gaming!
it would be nice to see more testing of hardware-demanding games!

  • Speaker problem with t420i and adding a new graphics card question

I bought a t420i about a month ago and noticed that the speakers could not properly handle muliple sounds at once.  What happens is that, say in a music video, the music plays loud and clear, but once the lyrics start the background music fades a bit to about 85% of it's original volume.  I had returned the laptop because of this problem but the replacement I got has the SAME exact problem.
In case im not clear, try this example.  You know the beeping noise you get when you press an incompatible set of keys?  ( like g, h, and b).  When I have this noise going simultaneously with a song, the song's sound fades a bit.
This does not happen with headphones, therefore i believe the problem is with the way the speakers are programmed.
Also, if I bought a t420 with just integrated graphics, could I still add a new graphics card?  Or can you only add a new graphics card to a thinkpad that initially comes with discrete graphics?

I think the main purpose of the nvs4200m is the ability to use three displays (internal + 2 external). Additionally, nVidia has better driver support for games so even though it is around the same speed, the drivers are better.
The shared ram is still used, unless you disable the HD3000 in the BIOS and run with only the nvs4200m at all times.

I had Purchased the Game Spore Creature Creator the Starter Kit which is just the Creature creator game and not the actual game itself. I wasn't able to install the the game on my computer because I don't have the right or not at all Video and Graphic Card install on my computer. * Video Card - ATI X1600 or NVidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100
This game will not run on PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) based Mac systems (PowerMac).
For computers using built-in graphics chipsets, the game requires at least: an Intel Integrated Chipset GMA X3100 or Dual 2.0GHz CPUs, or 1.7GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent
    Supported Video Cards
    ATI Radeon(TM) series
    * X1600, X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600

and that I need to upgrade my system. Basically I need; ATI Radeon 1600 or NVIDIA Geforce 7300 and a INTEL Extreme Graphic Video Card-GMA X3100, in order to be able to install and play this game. Since I already have this game, I would like to be able to upgrade my computer system which brings me to ask; does somone know or refer me to a web site that has and sells these Video and Graphic Card and supports for the Mini Mac?
Plus they say that I need a 1020 of MB of Ram, I Have already found that 1024 MB of Ram but I just need those Video and Graphic Cards for my computer system. I am adding my computer system Profile to my discussion board to show you what I have on my system, would you be able to tell me if I would be able to add these Video and Graphic card and the memory or Ram 1024 to my computer system?

    Hi Trisha,
The only modern Mac's with video cards are the Mac Pro and Xserve (server) systems. They both are priced quite a bit higher than any Mac Mini.
Some systems, like the Mac Book Pro laptop can be ordered with different graphics cards, but that has be done when the system is built, as it is not replaceable once the system is built. To find out which systems, go to store.apple.com. For each system that you select, you can see if there's an option for a better video card.

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

    Hello,
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
    Mac OSX version 10.6.8
    Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.
