Additional RAM

Trying to add additional 4 gb memory to existing 4 gb standard memory in Pavillion Mini 300.  Memory installed but does not show up in system.  system page in control panel shows 1 slot and only 4gb of memory.  HP support states that motherboard for this computer does not recognize more than 4 gb of memory.  HP specs for this system states that it is upgraeable to 16gb.  will this system utilize more than 4gb of memory/how?
Speccy shows 2 slots occupied and 8gb of memory but only 4 gb of physical memory. see below:

  • Second internal HD, additional RAM & proper settings for them

    Hi guy!
I want to thank you in advance for reading my questions and answering it. It may be long.
Today, I've received my memory upgrade 4GB (2X2) from OWC. And my 2nd hard drive Seagate Baracuda 500GB 7200.
I read all my the instructions and installed all memory and HD myself, all seams to be working, my system shows RAM and HD. However, there are some questions I have unresolved, I called tech support they couldn't tell me more than just "call the HD manufacture and ask them"
1st. After I've installed HD and started the computer, the window came and said that I need to initialize the HD. I clicked "initilialize" it took me to disk ut. I erased HD and gave it a name "Mac HD2" Now, it is showing me that I only have 465.64 GB of space available. It shows that only 108MB is used. Where is the rest? I know that it won't show the whole 500GB, but it ate up 35GB, itsn't that too much? So, my question about this is: Should I be doing something else with this HD? Should I be calling the company that sold HD and have them replce it? Or is it ok to hav such a loss?
2nd. What is the best way to place my folders & files on both HDs. I was thinking to take my Documents/Movies/Music/Pictures folders and just place them on HD2 and keep HD1 for applications only. Is this right?
3rd. My HD1 is 160GB (148.9 as per info.) My Documents/Movies/Music/Pictures folders are about 55Gb my application folder is 8 GB I should have about 86GB left (if we take 148-55-8) I only have 67. What am I missing? The user folder (yuriyork) is 60GB. I'm totally confused with where the space is.
With this said, I'm back to the 2nd question what files/folders I should move to HD2? I just want to do it right to try and up the computer performance.
4th. When I do move files/folders to HD2 should I just open HD1 and HD2 in finder and simply drug and drop folders from one window to another? I think it's not right way of doing it. I think I need to somehow specify to the system that Documents/Movies/Music/Pictures folders are now located on HD2
5th. With increase RAM, should I do any setting on OSX to tell it that there is lots of RAM and that it can use it as much as it wants? Like for example, I know that in Virtual PC I can set up the amount of RAM it uses. So, with that I thought that I may need to specify something like that in some other settings, if so than where?
I hope I didn't confuse you all with some much stuff. To hopefully simplify this, I'm going to put the JPG file on the web for you guy to see what folder are what size and may be give me an idea what is the best way to do it.
    Here is the photo:
Again, thank you for taking your time to answer my questions, you guys have always been very helpful.
    Thanks to all!!!

#1: The primary reason for the discrepancy is numbering convention. To hard drive manufacturers, a kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, and a gigabyte is exactly 1 billion bytes, so 500GB is 500,000,000,000 bytes. Computers, using the binary system, don't use 1,000 to represent a kilobyte; instead they use 1,024.
Therefore, when you divide 500,000,000,000 by 1,024 (KB), again by 1,024 (MB), and again by 1,024 (GB), you'll get 465.66 GB, which is almost exactly what you're seeing.
#2: When I installed a second hard drive in my G5, I moved my Music, Pictures, and Movies folders to this drive. Then, I just had to point iTunes and iPhoto to the new directories. The sidebar links still take me to the original folders on the original drive, but that could likely be fixed if I replace the folders with an alias or symbolic link that pointed to the new location.
#3: Try downloading an app such as Omni DiskSweeper to help locate where all the space has gone to. It'll give you a breakdown by each folder and subfolder on the drive.
#4: As I stated in #2, an alias or symbolic link should work if you want the sidebar links to continue to function after moving the folders. Otherwise, just direct iTunes and iPhoto to the new locations.
#5: OS X manages memory on its own for each application. There's no longer the need to allocate RAM to each app like there was in the pre-OSX days.
When installing additional RAM, it's often recommended to reset the NVRAM to ensure that the computer recognizes all of it properly. To do this, reboot the computer while holding down the Command, Option, O, & F keys. This will boot you into open firmware. At the prompt, type the following (and press return after each one, of course):
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
The computer should reboot after the final command.

  • Installing additional RAM into hp s5150t

I have a quad core s5150. I recently tried to add two additional RAM modules. I verified that I had purchased the correct RAM on curcial.com and by speaking with their reps. The computer would not take the RAM in any configuration. We tried seating the new RAM into the old modules one at a time and it still would not work. At last, the crucial rep told me to try and update the BIOS. Hard as I tried, for three hours, I was unable to find the BIOS update on the HP website despite looking where the HP video told me to look. There were lots of update options but no BIOS heading. The auto detect tool could not identify my computer for some reason. The HP Update tool installed with the machine said no updates were available.
I am wondering a few things, 1) Where can I find the BIOS update on the HP site? It is not in the list of updates on this page, where it is supposed to be:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4002...
    2. Is it possible there is a problem or conflict beacuse the machine shipped with Windows Vista and I updated it to Windows 7? Looking in the BIOS, the last update was May of 2009, long befoe Windows 7 was updated from the old VISTA files.
    3. Any other reason you might know for the modules to not be working? We exchagned them for a fresh set already and still the same problem. They are clicking into place. Not sure what to try.

Thanks for your support, Jaco. I appreciate your input.

I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 on mid-2009 Macbook Pro (683MB RAM used, 81.67GB free space), do I need additional RAM to update to Snow Leopard?
I was told I can update to Snow Leopard without adding RAM but just read on another discussion thread that someone with the same age Macbook Pro that I have was told to purchase more RAM then update to SL.

  • Additional RAM needed

Trying to load new software, both of which tell me I need 1-2 GB of RAM. Where do I determine how much RAM I have, and can I simply buy and upload additional RAM to this model?
    Thanks.

    Hi
    +"Where do I determine how much RAM I have?"+
Apple Menu > About this Mac.
+"can I simply buy and upload additional RAM to this model?"+
Yes. You buy RAM and physically install it. Depending on the model you may be able to do this yourself with an appropriate screwdriver or pay/get an authorised Apple Technician (or someone else who is capable of doing it) to do it for you. There's no upload involved.

  • Do I need additional RAM?

    Hello to all,
Though I am not presently facing any trouble while editing, yet I am feeling discomfortable seeing the free space remaining on my 8 GB RAM which sometimes drops to less than 500 GB when I have just my internet and FCPX on. Do I have to go in for additional RAM?
Any guidance in this matter is most welcome.
    DR.SOMANNA

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If everything works to your satisfaction you don't need it.
You may want it, but that's a different matter.
If you decide to get some, buy it from Crucial or Kingston, who provide the highest quality at the lowest prices  .  .  .  .  just a fraction of the cost of getting it from Apple  .  .  .  .  .  and by "a fraction", I mean a quarter!

  • T42 not recognizing additional RAM

I had to reformat my hard drive and in process of updating drivers.  THe monitor image is very slow  and I believe it may be due to the T42 not recognizing the additional RAM I had put in.  Is there a way to download a driver for this RAM so it is recognized or another solution? Thanks in advance.

Hi and thanks. The screen is very slow meaning when in internet explorer and scrolling down a web page it sort of almost blurs.  I initially though it was RAM but I was mistaken that on this particular T42 i didn't add any but just have the 500mb it came with.  But I beleive something is causing the viewing to be slow.  I just reformatted the computer so there is no programs running other than what is normal with XP installation.  I played with the Display and brought down to 16bits 768 and it still slow on scrolling down any webpages.
    The exact model is t42 - 2373 - h12.
I apologize for misdiagnosing but perhaps you might still know what the problem is?  Thanks again.

  • HT3918 Can I leave the installed 4gb (2 X 2gb) of ram in my iMac and add 8 gb (2 X 4gb) of additional ram to the available (empty) slots?

Can I leave the installed 4gb (2 X 2gb) of ram in my iMac and add 8 gb (2 X 4gb) of additional ram to the available (empty) slots? I will ultimately swap the remaining 2 X 2gb out for 2 x 4gb.  If so, does this affect how the ram is used/accessed (i.e. will the original ram be limiting because it is in the installed location rather than in the other previously open slots?)  Thanks.

That's exactly the RAM arrangement I've been running with for the last couple of years with no issues.
2x2gb on one shelf and 2x4gb on the second.

  • Buying additional RAM

I want to buy additional RAM for a brand new iMac.
    1. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for when buying more RAM? Do I just get anything that says "1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM "? Is there a particular brand, etc.?
    2. What is considered the going price for (2x8GB) for the new iMac?
    Thanks.

    1. Is there any advantage to the Crucial brand vs. OWC?
    2. I want to buy the new iMac with the least amount of RAM possible 2x4GB, try it out, and add more RAM as needed. Is there a way to measure when I could benefit from the additional RAM? Some way to measure how much is being used while having Photoshop, Premiere, etc. running?
    Thanks.

  • Lenovo 3000 N100 additional RAM issues

My laptop has two slots for RAM, it came with 1GB and I added an additional 1GB so right now I'm running 2GB's. I purchased an additional 2GB's of RAM to replace a 1GB so I'll be running 3GB's. I installed the 2GB and left a 1GB in, turned on my laptop but it wont boot. It turns on but wont boot and I have a blank screen. I have tried numerous times to get it to boot up but no luck, any help on this issue would be great.

It doesn't act erratic once I finally do get my pc booted. If I remove one of the 1GB sticks and replace it with the new 2GB stick my pc wont boot up, it'll turn on but wont boot and I just get a blank screen even if I turn my pc on and off several times. When I remove the 2GB and put back in the other 1GB it still wont boot up unless I turn on and off my pc a cpl of times same with if I just use the 1GB my pc came with. Once it boots everything is fine afterwards but than I'm back to using 2GB on my pc and I want to add the 2GB with one of my 1GB giving me a total of 3GB for my pc. I just want to know why my pc wont boot up with the 1GB and the additional 2GB.

  • Installing additional ram memory

I am trying to install memory in my Mac Pro, but some of the risers come upon the hardware configuration panel as empty.  I have moved around the memory modules and they all work, but just not when they are all installed at once.  I have two sets of 2 gb modules and four 1 gb modules.  Two of the 2 gig modules are are Centon and two are another brand.  All of the 1 gig modules are exactly the same.  Currently, I have 4x1GB modules installed and 2x2gb modules installed.  My computer is reading the 2 GB modules, but only reading two of the 1GB modules.  Here's my Mac configuration:
    Model Identifier:    MacPro2,1
    Processor Name:    Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:    2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors:    2
    Total Number Of Cores:    4
    Memory:    6 GB
    Bus Speed:    1.33 GHz
When I putt all four of the 2GB modules in the first two slots and the four 1GB modules in the last two, the computer read the 1 GB modules but one of the 2GB modules?????  When I removed all of the 1 GB moduels, the computer then read two of the 2GB modules.  I am totally confused.  I have tested all of the modules and they all work in one configuration or another, and I've checked all of the slots and they work too.  Any suggestions on what I should try next?
    thanks

Hi, this may or may not resolve the issue:
MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory:
Additional notes     For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot.
In Mac computers there is a hardware component known as the "RAM Equalizer". The function of this is impeded when the memory slots are filled with unequal memory quantities.

  • Installed Additional RAM - anything else?

I just installed an additional 512mb of RAM on my iBook, bringing the total RAM up to 1GB. The installation was pretty painless, but now I'm wondering: is there anything I should do to double-check the RAM to make sure it is working properly? On the 'About this Mac' page, it does show that my Mac now has 1GB of RAM, which is a good sign - but should I pursue anything else like a Hardware Test or the like just to be sure?

Usually, you'll be alright, but if things start acting odd, like your machine stops booting, etc. that's when you might start thinking there is something wrong with your RAM.
Until then, chill out and enjoy things.

  • Power Mac G4 Won't Boot after Installing 2nd Hard Drive and Additional RAM

Hello. I am using a Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics) that I bought a few weeks ago. It was working perfectly fine until I tried to add an additional hard drive and add more RAM to the machine. After I closed the case and plugged it back in, it won't start up at all. No sound, no lights, nothing spinning, nothing. I removed the added hard drive and RAM, but it still refuses to start. I don't know what happened. Hopefully it's not a logic board failure or anything else equally bad.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The PowerMac G4 PCI forum is over here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=586
I'll ask a moderator to move your thread. Try replacing the clock battery, and hitting the CUDAS switch.

  • Additional Ram Installation?

I bought the MacPro with 2 GB installed on 4 512 sticks, one pair up on riser A, the second pair on riser B.
I installed 2 additional GB's, as one pair as follows:
    Riser A/DIMM 1 512 MB
    Riser A/DIMM 2 512 MB
    Riser A/DIMM 3 512 MB
    Riser A/DIMM 4 512 MB
    Riser B/DIMM 1 1 GB
    Riser B/DIMM 2 1 GB
So is this optimal, as the heat seems pretty high in A1 most of the time, ~70C?

I have the same RAM as you have. I know that Apple suggest filling A1, A2, then B1, B2 Then A3, A4... Exactly as you did.
There's a site that suggest otherwise:
    http://peloche.smugmug.com/photos/91752872-O.jpg
So my config is 4B. You can try it. The riser A has a higher temperature so if you put the 2 X 1Gig in riser A, the the cooling is easier since there is only 2 chips, letting more air go thru.

The backup is an issue, but you can always mail your work to your self… but the mail server has to be configured the way that mails are not deleted.
The more elegant way is "MobileMe", you can use it as a storage and save your work there.
