Additional SSD for HP EliteBook Folio 9480m

Hi,
Is it possible to add extra SSD in HP EliteBook Folio 9480m? If yes, which type of SSD will be fit?
///Wutt

Here is the Service Manual:
Manual
See page 40 and 41. There is only room for one full-sized 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD. It can also hold an M.2 mSATA mSSD which can be used as an acceleration cache drive or as a boot/OS drive. If you look at page 1 of the Manual you can also see that an mSSD is not available if you have a Self-encrypting drive. So, for us to give advice we need to know what you have because that will determine what else you can add or how else your storage can be configured. You have a very complicated and flexible computer.

  • Elitebook Folio 9480m display cable for display upgrade

    Hi,
I am trying to upgrade my screen panel from HD to HD+ resolution. According to HP technical support this schould be possible by just replacing the panel. So I ordered a replacement in the higher resolution and it does not work. Backlight is on, but no picture shown. The replacement is a N140FGE-LA2. it replaces an N140BGE-LA3. Both are from Chimei Innolux.
Of course the higher resolution HD+ panel requires a 2 channel 6 bit LVDS, while the HD panel is 1 channel. So I need a cable that has all pins 40 pins connected. I also checked the display cable I have already in my machine and it seems that it is not fully connected.
With the previous model the 9470m there were two separate cables in the antenna kit for the different resulutions (part number 702876-001). The antenna kit for the 9480m does not mention this. Also HP technical support told me that the cable I have should work, but I have my doubts now.
Does anybody know where to get a suitable cable. This cable actually combines the display signals and the webcam connection. The following information would help me.
    - What part number of HP would contain the spare part cable for the HD+ panel in the 9480m?
    - Can I use the HD+ cable of the antenna kit from the 9470m also in the 9480m? They look very similar.
    - Is there any aftermarket possibility to get to the right cable? Any part number for that would be great.
    Also Interesting:
    - What is the actually manufacturer and model of the panel used in the 9480m HD+ model? If somebody who has that a HD+ 9480m could have a look inside, this would be great information to double-check if the replacement panel type is actually ok.
    best regards, Jörg

    Hi again,
I did some investigations regarding the display cables used.
6017B0391001 is the HD cable (1 Channel, 6bit LVDS) used in the Elitebook 9470m
6017B0427401 is the HD+ cable (2 Channel, 6bit LVDS) used in the Elitebook 9470m
6017B0507401 is the diaplay cable for the Elitebook 9480m (this is the cable used in my machine)
The cable used in the 9480m looks like that not all pins are connected. Is it a 1 Channel cable? Would that mean that also the HD+ display used is a 1 Channel display? This would be strange in my opinion.
I guess I try the HD+ cable from the 9470m with the panel I odered and see if it works.
It would be really great if somebody owning an Elitebook 9480m with HD+ (1600x900) display could check what exact manufacturer and model HP uses.
Any thoughts on this would be really helpful.
    best regards, Jörg

    Hi,
You can replace the HDD but you can't ADD SSD to your computer. It does not have spare room. You can replace HDD with a new SSD up to current limit. I bought one Crucial 960Gb two weeks ago from Amazon, received it on Monday. Don't know where to put it because my laptops all have SSD's.

is it possible that on the new ssd(128gb) i install the windows os and the recovery partition.(for this i suppose i have to uninstall the windows from the current ssd  and do a reinstall of the same on the new ssd )
and use the old ssd(256gb), creating two partitions, one for installing the programes and the second one for data storage.
if the above mentioned is possible, how to proceed?
which ssd would be compatiable with the system and from where can i get the new hardware added?

  • HP Elitebook Folio 9480m drivers missing / Device Manager PCI Device and Unknown device?

Hello all, I have already installed Windows 8.1 Pro x64 and i have on the device manager still 2 missing drivers they are  PCI Device and Unknown device??
Please see attached a printscreeen. ANy idea which drivers are missing? Thank you all

Hi: You need this driver for the PCI device... http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=7089928&swItemId=ob_134503_1&swEnvOid=4158 I gave you the driver for the unknown device when you had W7 on the machine, so it is probably the same one. http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=7089928&swItemId=ob_132986_1&swEnvOid=4158 If it is not that one (or you had two unknown devices at one time, and already installed the 3D driveguard driver), then it is probably this one... http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=7089928&swItemId=ob_133322_1&swEnvOid=4158

The HP Web site is not easily searched. Thanks,

Hi: There is a major problem with the business support site which crashed on August 1 and had not been fixed to date. The first ID is the JMicron card reader that needs the driver.  Try this old one for W8. http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=ob_110565_1#tab1 The second one needs the 3D driveguard 5 driver. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59001-59500/sp59282.exe

  • HP EliteBook Folio 9470m Ultrabook - Flash Cache - Flash Cache

I'm trying to deploy Windows 7 x86 SP1 to an HP EliteBook Folio 9470m Ultrabook with Flash Cache.
I'm using MDT 2010 U1 and running the deployment from USB-media.
Reading the BDD.LOG I can see: "LTI applying image G:\Deploy\Operating Systems\W7 x86 Ent 007\7.wim using SETUP.EXE" and after 18 min  "Setup completed successfully." and "LTIApply processing completed successfully." After LTICopyscripts, ZTIConfigure,
ZTIDrivers and ZTINextPhase the computer reboots and I'm getting "Windows boot manager 0xc000000f An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data".
When I'm looking at the Boot Config with BCDEDIT.EXE I can see boot manager points at the Flash Cache installed in the machine:
HarddiskVolume3 is the Flash Cache (output from diskpart, list vol):
I've tried to read setupact.log but can't find whats going wrong.
How to handle computers with Flash Cache in deployment with MDT?

Machines with more than one physical disk are difficult to deploy to arbitrary disks using technologies like MDT and/or SCCM OSD.
By default you can configure MDT and/or OSD to deploy a task sequence to a specific disk index like Disk(0), but trying to add intelligence to change the target disk is non trivial.
For MDT litetouch you can write a script to change the target disk during the task sequence execution by modifying the OSDDiskIndex variable. So in this example, you could create a script to select the first disk that is larger than 50GB.
Otherwise you are left to deploy to the 1st disk enumerated by the system, which in this case can be the ssd cache disk.
I have written a utility to help modify the OSDDiskIndex using a script.
    http://keithga.wordpress.com/2013/09/18/ztiselectbootdisk-wsf/
In the example above I would add the script just before the "format and partition" step in the TAsk sequence. Set a WMI condition for the model of the HP, then add the following to the CS.ini:
    [Settings]
    Properties=OSBootDiskOverrideWQL
    [default]
OSBootDiskOverrideWQL = WHERE Size < 53687091200 and InterfaceType = 'IDE' and MediaType != 'Removable Media'

  • How do I use my SSD for apps and HDD for documents?

    Hi, everyone.
I just installed (myself) an Intel 120GB SSD into my 2011 iMac (3.4Ghz Quad-Core, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD). I kept the HDD.
I run Logic Pro 9 and have around 200GB of additional sample plugins (VSL Solo Strings, Ivory Grand Pianos, Superior Drummer, etc..) and
I want to know how I can successfully transfer the Apps (Logic, Sibelius, Pages, iTunes, etc...) onto my new SSD while keeping the plugins on my HDD and using them simultaneously.
I having been searching for a way to do this all day to no avail.
    Thanks! If you can help.
p.s. since some of the apps require registration, I cannot simply drag them to my SSD from the HDD and expect them to work. I get an error.

My suggestion is to move you entire home directory on to the hdd and leave the ssd for the os and your key applications.

  • Elitebook Folio 9470m - how to create recovery USB in preinstalled Win7?

Hi, this will be my first post here, so please be gentle
I have a new, pretty HP Elitebook Folio 9470m for testing - it came with preinstalled Windows 7 OS. I wanted to check some things, play around with it and as a cautious user I wanted to create a recovery media first. I have a 65GB flash drive which I've previously used as a recovery media for other notebooks and (as this model doesn't have a CD/DVD drive) I wanted to use it this time as well.
First I searched the web to find out how to create a recovery USB for this laptop but HP website gave me the info to use Recovery Manager which I don't have installed on this notebook - when I search for "recovery" I get something like "Create HP recovery CD". And when I try to use this I get an error regarding no writable media (even thou the flash drive is connected).
I stumbled upon a tip to F11 the laptop before boot, but I don't get the Recovery Manager either.
Should I download it and install from somewhere or is there another way to create the recovery stick for this notebook?
    This question was solved.

    Hi Neith,
You can use the HP Recovery Flash Disk utility for Windows 7.  There is more information about the utility on this HP web document.

  • Size of SSDs for Photoshop CS5, LR3, Windows 7

Looking at configurations to build a new desktop,  I've been reading so many articles on using SSDs for PS CS5 that I'm now confused.
I'd like to use one drive for OS & programs and a 2nd for a PS scratch disk.  I'm looking at 80GB or 120GB to fit my budget.  Will either of these sizes be suitable for the two drives. I've noticed that Intel just dropped their prices today and added the 120GB drive.
I would like to use WD hard drives for a storage drive and another for a  working drive (4 internal drives total) as the computer functions for family Internet, too.  Now, I store my main Lightroom catalogs and photos on an external drive so I can move them between my desktop and laptop.  My PS interests usually lie in collages of 6-8 photos (layers) and stringing photos together for landscapes.  Lightroom does a lot of my editing adjustments other than that.  I'm looking at 8MB of RAM for now, again for the budget.
        What do you suggest?

    Ok, SSD's and photoshop...
there are a lot of differnet ways to handle this question none of them are easier then the other ..
I just did this like a month  ago and here is what i did. *** note** Now i am not suggesting you follow my steps, but you can do something similar at a much lower price range
I have an OCZ RevoDrive 110 gig SSD as my primary os drive and program files directory.
second drive set is a pair of 10krpm 300gb raptor drives striped for a 600 gd data drive.
I have a 2x 2TB hard drives that are my archives but i keep them off line.
Now here is where it gets complicated.
You want to write to your SSD as little as possable for longevity of the drives mostly. so first thing is you want no swapper, no automatic defragmentation and several other SSD spacific settings like hibernation etc, if you have been doing the research you already know all this.
Now i took that and went a step even further and this is not something you would want to do unless you are extreeeemly confortable with playing around with OS configurations.
I during the OS build set all my user directories, program data, set the swapper to the Physical data hard drive set as well as the PS scratch disk, Internet caches etc..
This make it so that my primary boot and program files drive never gets written to unless there is an update or i am installing something.
The second Physical drive handles all the changing data. User profiles, personal settings, desktop, etc.
This does a number of things for me, everything launches and runs extreemly quickly it takes seconds for boot to dektop apps launch with out hesitation. It alows me to use a smaller SSD to house all my applications and OS while not restricting my ammount of data i can keep on my desktop or documents folders.
I have only used 35 gigs out of the 110 gig ssd installing all my apps and os including several very large games.
If i had to do it again i would do it exactly the same way.
Now, if you are not so confident in your OS skills and simply want an SSD for the extreme speed it will provide you.  I would still suggest only using a single SSD and use a second physical drive.
Several reasons, its a heck of a lot cheaper.
Place your scatch disk, your OS swapper file (ssd does not need a swapper file but unless you have an ungodly ammount of memory you should always have one some place), temp directories and internet explorer cache locations onto the physical drive. Also to store your data on it.
SSD are too expensive to use for data storage or swapper/scratch drives at this point and it does not buy you anything speed wise using it as cache or temp folders. additionally when you are simply storing images you don't need that extreemly quick you will not see a noticable difference opening a photo on physical hd or SSD its just not that much data.
One last thing, unless your in an extreem rush, i would wait 6 months.  with SATA 3 and USB-3 coming around and already showing on most new motherboards, newer faster SSD's and physical drives will be making their way to the market pretty quick.

  • Ssd for dv7 1243cl

I am interested in upgrading my laptop's hdd to a ssd to reduce load times and extend battery life.  I cannot for the life of me find the detailed information I need to make my decision on which solid state drive to purchase.  I am looking to see what type of sata connection my laptop uses, I know it doesn't have sata3, but does it have sata2?  Is there a recommended ssd for this model laptop?

You don't really need to back anything up, ounce your old drive is removed you can simply connect it up through a USB hard drive caddy and drag off what ever you want off of it on to the new drive ounce the OS is installed.
Or, with out checking, I believe your dv7 has another hard drive bay. With an additional caddy and SATA connector you can install your old drive in there and either drag things over onto the new drive, or leave them there for access when ever you need it. Ounce you have pulled everything off that you want, you can eventually delete the old OS. One thing you will need to save are any product keys and install packages you have, but normally those should be on separate CD's
You can update the BIOS if you like, but for the most part all that should be necessary is to install teh SSD and boot from an OS install disc.
     It does have 2 bays.
And a place to buy a hard drive caddy for your old drive.
     http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=195
Also, after you install the OS the first thing you want to do is to install the ChipSet driver.
Click on the link and run AMD's driver finder (the easiest way) and it should bring one up, it will also bring up your video driver as well. It's important to install your ChipSet driver first before anything else, the rest doesn't matter.
     http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx
Here is also an interesting thing from Newmodeus, might be easier then Macrium reflect if you choose to go that route.

     ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Here is a link to all your BIOS versions, I went through all of them and there really isn't anything to do with the running of a SSD, but there are some improvements if you go to Windows 7
If you're going to flash it Do It Wile You Are Running Vista if you flash it in W7 it may brick your machine.
Follow these instructions when flashing the BIOS :
Save the BIOS file to the desk top, do not flash it from a temporary folder.
Have the battery installed and the adapter plugged in.
Disconnect everything from the laptop except for the adpater.
Leave the WiFi button turned on, but disconnect from the internet by shutting off your modem.
Do not flash it in the event of a power failure eg, a bad wind storm
Do not touch the mouse pad while the BIOS is being flashed.
When it appears to be finished and the hard drive light stops flashing, leave it sit for at least 3 minutes before booting up. In most cases it will shut down automatically when it's done.

  • What is the best way to use a SSD for Photoshop/photo editing?

Computer hardware newbie here: I do a significant amount of photo editing work and for a very long time I've experienced Photoshop, Bridge and Photomatix crashing constantly (usually due to insufficient RAM) or just generally taking forever (Bridge took forever to load the thumbnail/preview extractions in a folder full of images, Photoshop took forever to save images and Photomatix took ages to load/merge a set of bracketed photos).  Here are the typical error messages I'd get: http://pastebin.com/J9byczse
As a professional photographer, constantly running into that sort of thing is quite aggravating, so to hopefully avoid ever having to deal with that again I invested in a new custom built computer.  It's Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with 32GB of RAM and a 240GB SSD; I'm using the 240GB SSD as my boot drive/OS, all of my programs are installed there, and the page file.  My photos and data are stored on several HDDs.  I have yet to install any of my photo editing software (Photoshop CS6 Extended, Lightroom, Photomatix etc) to the new computer yet since I'd like some advice first.
My basic question is this: what is the best way to take advantage of the SSD (and the computer in general) when it comes to my photo editing software?
    Specifically...
    1. If I have a folder of photos I'm working on, should I move it to the SSD and then work on them from there in order to take advantage of the speed of the SSD?  Would this make any difference in terms of speed if the photos are located on the SSD vs. an internal/external HDD?
    2. Most of what I've read online seems to recommend two separate SSDs, one for installing/booting the apps and one for cache/scratch.  Does it matter if I use my 240GB SSD for both?
    3. This is a fairly new computer and the SSD is already almost half full (102GB used, 120GB free) *WITHOUT* any of my photo editing software installed yet.  I'm concerned about how fast that remaining 120 GB may fill up.  As it fills up will I lose the speed advantage of the SSD vs. a regular HDD?
    4. Sort of similar to #3, but should I bother moving any of my other non-photo editing programs/caches off of the SSD to a HDD and would there be any major difference in the speed/lifespan of the SSD if I did so?  It's mostly Firefox and Chrome and their caches that I'm concerned may be a problem if they remain on the SSD.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have an SSD you can run the cache and programs on the same drive.  However, many recommend a scratch disk size of 100-200 gigs so that will not work here unless you opt for a larger SSD.  Otherwise an internal spinner is recommended that does not contain the program files, or idealy any other files that may want to get acessed at same time (only one read/write head per drive).
With 32 gig of RAM you may not need the constant use of the scratch drive unless working on large images with lots of layers.  So see no advantage to moving folder to SSD for temp work environment.
From what I read the new crop of SSD do not have the wear problems of the older versions.
