Additional Subtitling Tools

I've recently been contracted to produce a series of Worship DVDs by various Praise Bands in our area (all copyright and licensing laws are being observed). These DVDs will be a sing-along type that will give the user several different options (similar to karaoke).
Contrary to many, I find the subtitle tools in EncoreDVD very useful and accurate, but I'd like to see some additions.
1. Automatic settings to allow subtitles to be placed by the author's choice at the top, middle, or bottom of the safe zone of the accompanying video. I'd like my users to have the choice of where they want to view the subtitles, depending on the height and location of their screen. Currently, the only way I've figured how to do this is to move each subtitle manually to its proper position. An automatic (global) option would save loads of time.
2. The ability to highlight individual or all blocks on the subtitle timeline and change font sizes and colors. This may already be available, but I'm not at my EncoreDVD computer right now to check it out.
3. The ability to copy/paste individual/several/all blocks of subtitle text to new areas of the timeline so that only the time placement needs to be adjusted. Currently, you can highlight those blocks, but you can't do much more than move them around. In music DVDs, there are many verses/choruses that repeat and this would be a time/money saver. My workaround it to create duplicate subtitle tracks and drag the blocks I need from the dupes and adjust them to the audio/video. It works, but since I'm doing English, Spanish, and French tracks, it becomes a bit tedious.
4. A way to save/extract created subtitles in EncoreDVD text/script format for future use so they don't have to be recreated from scratch (would also be a big help for intermittent saves in case a project becomes corrupted).
Peace, BJ

Hi Joe,
i Not sure if your first request is possible. Encore does allow the author to place the subtitles on import, but subtitles are converted to RLE bitmaps on export to DVD (standard). It may be possible to allow user control over where they appear onscreen, but if so, I am unaware of the mechanism that would allow it. Have you seen any DVDs that allow this?
I have seen this on several DVDs. There's a company called iWorship that offers this feature, but I don't really think there's a special mechanism for this. My guess is that you just create 3 different subtitle tracks per language, aligning them at the top third, middle, and lower third. Then you create a button on your language menu for each track. You'd link each button to the title, and assign subtitle 1,2, or 3 to the buttons. I've already experimented with this and it appears to work just as theirs does.
i Your second request is already possible in Encore.
I kind of guessed it was possible, but I wasn't posting from a computer where I could test it, so I thought I'd mention it with the others.
i Your third request is somewhat possible: you can duplicate a subtitle track, then edit the subtitles.
Again, I'm not working on a computer that has EncoreDVD on it at the moment. Are you suggesting something different from what I already described above? Are you saying that you can copy and paste from the duplicate track and not the original? I thought I tried that and it didn't work.
i Your fourth request- that's a feature request. But I'd suggest that you use an external application to create subtitles, such as Lemony or Subtitle Workshop.
I've not tried Lemony, but I do have Subtitle Workshop and a couple of other subtitle programs. I do use them for normal subtitles that appear in the standard bottom of the screen. They don't seem to be able to do what I want to do for this project directly.
I suppose I could create the scripts there, import them into EncoreDVD and then adjust the positions. This project is going to take quite a bit of time to produce as 100% of the profit is going for a charity (Muscular Dystrophy) and I'm doing everything myself and I'm just looking for ways to automate as much as possible.
Peace, BJ

  • Is there an easy subtitling tool for CS6?

    Hi,
I use titles for making subtitles in CS6, but I find it quite time consuming to use.
Is there an easier tool or a plugin for making subtitles and export them for use in Encore?
    Best regards
    Jost

I need in the first place to burn the subtitles into the image, and then later have subtitles for a DVD.
I'm thinking of a tool where you easy can make a subtitle and have them stay in the same place as the previuos subtitle.
You can of course just duplicate a title and erase the text, but I still find it time consuming. But I might just be picky :-)

  • OT: TitleExchange 1.9 subtitling tool final

My popular tool for juggling with subtitles has gone into the next round.
There are some exciting features with the new version.
*FCP AppleEvent support*. This allows to communicate directly with FCP.
*FCP XML import options*, which will allow to add the sequence to selected project or create a new one and some more stuff.
*Direct import from DVDSP track files* into FCP or other formats (with limited font style support).
    *STL binary support*
*STL text (Apple's STL format) now does have font style support* - both for read and write.
*QTText import now supports font styles*.
*All font settings are user selectable* or automatic - this allows to use a template, modify everything but the alignment or something other.
*TitleExchange is not anymore limited to some special generators*. It comes with a pretty complete database for most (if not all) generators with are based on fxScript. The database can be extended or customized by the user - also all Motion templates are supported.
    *And many more …*
*Another nice feature* - though it's Avid who brought it to you: using Apple's STL format you can interchange titles between FCP and Avid - using TitleExchange and Avid's subCap generator. So you can use TitleExchange to bring subtitle from FCP to Avid and vice versa.
I'll put some tutorial videos on my site within the next weeks.
The price will raise to 165 Euro at the end of the month. The update is free for current users.
But I have got a question to those of you who are working with subtitles: Would it make sense for you to include 3G text? This would allow to create user selectable subtitles for iPhone, iPod, iMovie etc.
Please let me know what you think.
    Download demo: [http://www.spherico.com/filmtools/TitleExchange>
Along with the demo you'll get a nice subtitle text generator for free.
As always - comments are welcome!

Thanks for the reply David. I have tried it with the Crash analiser and this is what it tells me.
    Plugin
This crash appears to have been caused by the Apple FinalCutPro plugin.
    Suggested Actions
    Render your timeline before playback.
Try to avoid adding too many plugins to a clip. If you must do this, export the finished clip out to a QuickTime movie and reimport into Final Cut Pro.
Disable or remove the plugin with Plugin Manager.
Check with the manufacturer for an update or contact their support department.

Hi. After loading a picture into Photoshop some of the menu tools are greyed out and I cannot use the keyboard short cuts, for instance I cannot use Ctrl + T for free transform, how do I resolve this problem. In addition the tool Icons are so small I have to get close to the screen to see them, is there anyway the Icons can be made bigger without reducing the resolution of the screen.
    Thanks
    Derek

Are you working on a background layer? If so, Ctrl + T will not work. Press Alt and double-click your background layer to convert to a normal layer (or right-click BG layer and select Layer from Background) and try again.
If you're working in Photoshop CC 2014 you can go to Preferences > Experimental Features and tick "Scale UI 200% for high-density displays" to make your buttons and icons larger.

    Hi,
Please try to break the questions into different threads.
i).What BI content do we need to install (or activate) to view the result of the query in Web Report and Excel Report form?
I understand that once the query is designed, it can be executed in BEx analyzer and we save it as workbook..then what is the purpose of BI content u201CWorkbooku201D that is available in BI content?
-> This WorkBook provides information for the BI Technical Content and is used by admin, where workbooks with queries designed by the customer are genrally targetted to the end user and contain information about the company.
(ii).Is BI portal same as Netweaver Portal? When end user tries to view the reports from the portal on clicking link, from where the data will be retrieved (I mean either from BEx web Analyzer or Web Application Designer or from anywhere else?
-> The BI portal is based on the Netweaver Portal. It simply has BI content & roles activated.

  • Moving Multiple Subtitles

I have a ten minute educational video that I have manually created subtitles for in DVDSP4 (I realize there are better methods for creating subtitles, but I wanted to get this done as quickly as possible and I very rarely do subtitles).
After placing all of the subtitles, I decided to trim one section of the video by a couple of seconds in FCP. I then reimported the footage into DVDSP. I was hoping to then select all of the subtitles after the edit point and move them to the left by the duration of the trim, but unfortunately I cant figure out how to move more than one subtitle at a time. Even if I select multiple subtitles, only the one that is clicked on gets moved. Even better would be to just hit the "minus" key, type the duration and hit return to move them, like you can with clips in FCP.
Is there any way to move a range of subtitles, or do I have to move each of them one by one? (Im hoping Im just mising something as it would be incredibly stupid if this was the case)

As Hal says Belle Nuit is supposed to be good. Played with the demo but never actually used it extensively. STLEdit would be your best bet but unfortunately the developer has stopped offering it for sale due to lack of interest.
We use both STLEdit and on a PC we use Lemony which is very good for taking one subtitle format and changing to another, shifting timecodes, etc.
Subtitle Workshop on the PC is supposed to be good. I believe soemone on the Tully DVDList (Bouke?) is about to release new subtitling tool.
Most people who deal with subtitling a lot are usually supplied with some kind of ready prepared file from the film distributor or the like. We do quite a few Japanese movies and always get some kind of file sent with timecode references - of course the English often has to be corrected! (Bet their English is better than my Japanese however...)

  • Perspective correction and Lens distortion removal tools

    Hi,
as a photographer who aspires to create pictures with best possible quality available to me I am very bothered that my primary image editing tool is lacking Perspective correction and Lens distortion removal tools. I believe that there should be no questions if such tools are necessity or so to speak additional enhancements. It is eating the disk space as well having multiple copies clutters the projects if these functions are available only via plug-ins or additional external tools.
How are you guys handling such issues?
For a moment I was thinking to convert all the files through Nikon Capture NX2 before importing to Aperture but that again is counter effective in long run. Aperture is built to work with Raw files and large tif files take longer to process between various programs and I would loose all the benefits of having Raw file at all.

It would be nice to have those functions added to the next version.
I always use the following page to select the product I want to provide feedback on:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Note - due to the number of lenses and cameras, this would be a huge task and the end result may not include a lot of older lenses which really need the correction.
I use PT Lens as a plug-in inside of Aperture for the most part (although I do have PS CS5 and DxO Pro 6 for situations where I want something different).
As you said, the downside is that you end up with a TIFF (from inside Aperture) or a processed file needing to be import into Aperture.

  • Please Suggest Alternatives To QTPro for Chapters, Subtitles

    Hello folks!
(FYI I'm posting this after reading through many prior threads in this group.)
I'm looking for suggestions for QTPro alternatives; please see below for background.
I need to create iPhone 3GS (OS 3.0)-viewable video clips containing chapters and subtitles (among other requirements and nice-to-haves). Last week I bought QTPro for this, but am afraid I did so without sufficient due diligence since I've run into limiting functionality or workflow. I'm posting here before I go buy another tool as hastily.
-- I want a GUI tool to create video clips containing chapters and subtitles (subtitles could be simply text layovers) viewable (including chapters and subtitles) on my Mac in QT, in iTunes, and on an iPhone 3GS.
-- I want to have just one file as a final output, which file I could re-edit in situ without needing to have a separate/original "source" file, and without needing to re-compress or -convert it and thereby lose image quality.
-- i find my iPhone accepts mp4 and m4v content, but not mov. In fact, iTunes doesn't even give me the option to sync mov content.
My issues with QTPro are the following:
-- QTPro seems to natively edit/save to mov (only) if saved video is to contain chapters and subtitles. If I "Export" from QTPro as, say, m4v, chapter information is lost.
-- If as some posts suggest I first save [unchaptered] video as m4v, then add chapters using QTPro, I still run into the same issue: I need to "Save" to retain newly-added chapter info and thus get an mov file; if I "Export" I can get an m4v, but lose chapter info.
-- So what I've been doing is importing the QTPro-chaptered mov file into Garageband, and then "Share" as m4v. That retains chapters. But this is overall a gnarly process: chapters using QTPro and a text file, subtitles too using the same method (though iMovie does it better), Garageband to make it iPhone-usable. And then it gets really messy if I need to add a video or still image mid-stream!
-- BTW, no, I don't want to use Garageband itself to chapterize ... because it's a more general-purpose "mixing" tool with attendant baggage: it creates huge "band" files as large as the source itself yet needs separate source for re-edits; its performance isn't snappy; its timeline hard to work with, et cetera.
    Here are apps I've tried:
-- Metadata Hootenanny: nice for metadata, and for chapters. No subtitles; saves as mov. Can't use.
-- Apple's chapter-izing utility that Garageband itself purportedly uses: didn't find it online, and didn't search too hard since it seemed to be a command-line tool.
-- Miyu Subtitler, and several sundry similar utilities: these either did 1 thing, or didn't do things well.
My best bet thus far seems to me SimpleMovieX.
What I like about SimplemovieX are:
-- it "natively" saves to mov, m4v, mp4
-- it does chapters just fine
-- it makes it easy to splice clips and still images, and adjusts prior edit-points such as chapters automatically
-- it's actually fun to use
What I wish were better are:
-- it seems its subtitling is rudimentary
-- it seems it doesn't allow per-track editing (but since I already have QT Pro, I can use that is I need to remove a track, etc)
SimpleMovieX is what I'll buy next, barring a better suggestion in the same price range (max ~ US$ 40; Final Cut Pro, at $1200 isn't something I could really justify to myself).
    So, suggestions, anybody?
    Thanx!
    --A

I'm finding WorldCaption less than satisfactory for the following reasons:
-- it needs a text file as input (which is fine) but I don't see a way for the file also to specify caption times. Times need to be specified via the UI, and that can soon get old. WorldCaption can "export" captions and times, yes, but i don't see an option to "import" it back in. Lastly, World-caption-created application-specific documents are not plain-text files, so there's no going in with a simple editor and tweaking times, caption text, etc
-- worse, I see that in some cases caption times are mis-saved -- times are off by a few seconds, even, and I'm pretty sure this is not a keyframe thing. I haven't identified the exact sequence of events that causes this, and given its earlier limitation I'm not too inclined to pursue this.
So I went back to the drawing board to look at other captioning/subtitling tools.
    Specifically, Submerge.
Submerge uses, say, SRT files for input, works well and does what it claims to do ... except it doesn't seem to render some characters in caption text. ">", for instance. I've tried backslash-escaping it, and HTML-entity-ing it, with no success. I've written the developer(s), and hopefully will hear back so i may go ahead and buy the product.
Submerge was useful for another reason: its "iPhone" output was a "MOV" file that does in fact transfer to and play on iPhones. Hmm, so that must mean not all "MOV" files are equal: it seems nearly as if if MOV files are limited to specific features (eg 1 video track, 1 audio track, 1 text track, etc) then they're playable on the iPhone. I'll need to read up on this.

  • Subtitling (question about archived material)

OK, I've looked through the archived questions about how to subtitle...and I just want to make sure I do this right. If I do subtitles in DVDSP, do I write them up in a text file first and then import them, or just type them in manually?
If I do subtitles in FCP I just use something like Title3D and type them in manually...creating a whole buncha overlay (title) clips, right?
Forgive the redundency, I know how subtitles are supposed to look, just trying to find the best (and least time consuming) way to produce them.
FYI...the subtitles will be of a person from Spain speaking English (it's kinda hard to understand him since he talks fast and has a heavy Spanish accent).
    Thanks, all, in advance.
    Jonathan

subtitling (question about archived material)< </div>
So you are trying put subtitles on your archived material?
If you use the subtitle track in DVDSP, the text will be switchable by the user. (This is made more complicated by several factors like your desire to make the subtitles permanent or uncontrollable by the user. These are options you can control by programming the DVDSP project. Not difficult but very confusing.)
If you use a text tool in FCP, the titles will be permanently burned into the video image.
If you use some fo the more sophisticated (read: Expensive) subtitling tools for FCP, you can export a caption-compliant file that can be printed to videotape or mastered to DVD. If you own one of these products, you are at the complete mercy of their manual's writer.

  • Preference to set minimum subtitle gap

Encore has made great strides in recent versions of CS to address the "minimum subtitle gap" required for Blu-ray - however the "auto-correct subtitles" function in CS6 is limited to the 5-frame Blu-ray spec minimum.
A certain widly-adopted software validator must count the break slightly differently, as it will reject Encores output even when it respects the 5 frame minimum - if there was a preferences setting to set the minimum to a higher value it would be much easier to correct these instances (for example, I've never had an issue with a gap of 8 frames - even though that's more than should be required). Unfortunately this has to be done either by hand (which would be incredibly tedious on most projects) or via an (often expensive) third party subtitle tool.
I know Encore has never claimed to output replication-ready masters - but a number of folks use Encore as part of their Blu-ray output workflow - and  given that the functionality to measure and correct subtitle gaps are allready implemented, I can't imagine it would be a tremendous undetaking to allow a user-configurable gap-length with 5 as the minimum.

Actually I used the man strftime for that. The thing is, I was just passing on the knowledge in case someone else needed it.

  • 3D tool add-on for CS6 Design standard

how can I obtain the 3D tool feature for my ADOBE Photoshope CS6 Design Standard version?

3D tools are only available in CS6 Extended but according to the Adobe website there is no upgrade path from CS6 to CS6 Extended.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopextended/buying-guide-upgrades.html
If that's truly the case then you'd have to subscribe to Photoshop CS6 Extended (either Single App subcription or Full Cloud Membership).
    https://creative.adobe.com/plans
In addition 3D tools do not work on Windows XP and your computer must have a minimum of 512MB vRAM (that's different to normal computer RAM).

  • Subtitles from FCP?

    Hi,
I have created subtitles for a number of video clips in Final Cut Pro, would it be possible to export these from my FCP timeline in a form that I could then bring into a subtitle track in DVDSP?
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions as this could obviously save me a lot of time!
    Very many thanks in advance.
    Steve

No. That won't work. you would need to make a subtitle file in TextEdit or similar, save it and import that.
    The formatting looks like this:
    $FontName = Arial
    $FontSize = 24
//If you need to include comments, place them on their own line, preceded by a forward slash, a space, then another forward slash like the example here. This text will not be superimposed over the video. Sample formatting for subtitles is as follows:
    *00:00:12:04 , 00:00:14:12 , This is a subtitle...*
    *00:00:16:14 , 00:00:19:08 , ...followed by another subtitle.*
//Comments can also be placed between subtitles.
    *00:00:22:08 , 00:00:26:15 , This is the next subtitle.*
+Note: If you specify a font to use, no subtitle+
+clips will appear if the font is not found on the computer that will be encoding the DVD. The font must be installed as a Mac OS X font— Mac OS 9 fonts are not used.+
+The file should NOT saved as Rich Text (.rtf)+
+It MUST be saved as Plain Text (.txt)+
The procedure is also described in the DVD SP user manual.
There are also several subtitling tools available that will look after the formatting aspect for you.
    Have a look on versiontracker.com.
