Not on my late 2011 15" MBP. When I use just Cammond+r it takes me to the built in recovery HD.
Even with no HDD in the system Command+r gives me nothing, no options at all and certainly not the Internet Recovery system.
Command+Option+r gives me the Internet Recovery system with or without a HDD in the system and with or without a Recovery HD partition on the internal drive.
So it would seem it is different for different models and whether or not there is or isn't a recovery partition on the internal drive.
So for anyone reading this thread try both Command+r and Command+Option+r to boot the computer from the Apple Online Lion Internet Recovery system.

I am performing a clean install of OS X vs. 10.8.5 on a new internal hard drive. At the end of the installation process the progress bar stalls with a minute to go - error message "Can't download the additional components needed to install OS X" appears

After an hour or two of the installation process, with reamining time registering only 7 minutes, a box appears on screen with the message:
"Can't download additional components needed to installl OS X". I can't get beyond that poiint. I had not trouble installing Lion yesterday, but three attempts to install Mountain Lion hand up at this same point. What can I do about it? (I'm installing to a Mac Mini that I bought in 2012. I have 110 GB free out of 249.67GB. I have VMWare Fusion installed and that allocates 69.55 to Windows.)

I recently upgraded the RAM in my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) to 16gigs. The process went smooth at first. Then the Computer would not boot and stayed on the white Apple screen with the circle spinning. A progress bar would appear and disapear but it would never get past that screen. I tried to fix that but ended up backing up my hard drive and now I am attempting to restore the unit using "command + R" at startup. I have eraseed and reformated the drive using with Disk Utilities OSX extend journaled. Then I attempt to reinstall and the unit is connected to my wifi which is fast and stable and I get, "can't download the additional components needed to install mac os x lion." I have tried this many times

I still have the 16gigs of ram in the macbook pro which I am told this unit supports both by OWC (which is where i bought it) both identical 2x8gig sticks ddr3 1333

Not sure 10.7.3 is still available over the internet download system. I think Apple waws more on the ball this time and switched the Recovery HD system download over to 10.7.4 fairly Quickly.
That may or may not be part of your problem.
It may also be your internet connection is flakey and is dropping the connection with the download server.
If you are doing this over a WiFi connection try connecting the Mac to your router with an Ethernet cable.

When I publish a quicktime movie using iWeb 09, (movie from iphoto 09 -originally from Canon SD870IS camera) I get a message saying "Additional Components Needed." I can hear sound but no video. Anyone have any ideas on how to rectify this problem?

Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X

Hi there, I'm new and a complete novice, please try to have patience I'm hoping to learn but need the right guidance and assistance if possible please :)
Firstly I have read the other articles sharing the same or similar title but most are mentioning using time machine.
I have just fitted a new 1tb SSD to my 13" MacBook Pro after my previous hd was in an unrepairable state. I also purchased a Mac OS X Lion thumb drive with intention of having the latest software on my mac. I obviously don't have any information I want to recover I just merely want to install OS X Lion and begin as if my Macbook was new. But I keep getting the above message. I have gone to disc utilities went through the whole erase process which creates the new partition. Every time I do verify disc is says disc needs repairing so successfully repair it and go back to attempting to install Lion but again it gives me the 'can't download the additional components...' Message. I tried starting up in recovery mode, but from what I have seen on tutorials I should be given the choice of 2 or 3 drives in which to start up on, I only get the option of the OS X Lion thumb drive. Please help me, I really would like to do this myself as a sense of achievement.
My warranty has obviously run out on my mac so this is the reason I changed the HD myself.

Hi a Brody, thank you for taking the time to lend some advice. I am able to connect to the internet via wifi, although my internet is not the fastest, would it be better to connect the MacBook up to the router?
I'm not sure if I have tried reformatting my SSD, would it be possible to have some instructions for that please?
With regards to the original install disc it was lost a long time ago, so was told this thumb drive USB stick with OS X Lion mounted (official apple OS X Lion thumb stick) to it would act as an install disc, would I require the initial install disc as it is a fairly old MacBook?

I downloaded a movie file (.avi) and the video plays fine in quicktime, however, the audio is not playing. It said that I need and additional quicktime component that mine does not have. What component do I need to download?

A couple of solutions you can pick from:
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
Try the file again.

Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it (maybe open a GarageBand document) and then quit out of the application.
Install the following players: VLC Media Player and/or Perian (AVI and FLV support).

Trying to load new software, both of which tell me I need 1-2 GB of RAM. Where do I determine how much RAM I have, and can I simply buy and upload additional RAM to this model?

Yes. You buy RAM and physically install it. Depending on the model you may be able to do this yourself with an appropriate screwdriver or pay/get an authorised Apple Technician (or someone else who is capable of doing it) to do it for you. There's no upload involved.

No audio, "additional software needed" - yes, but what?

I'm trying to play an .avi file, and there is no sound. QT warns me that "additional software is needed," and links to an Apple download page for various additional codecs/plug-ins. But it doesn't tell me what I need, so I have no idea what to get! Big help.
I've installed Xvid and Divx, the only two I've heard of, and neither have an impact.
How do I figure out what I need to get the sound out of this file?

If you are simply using a trial and error approach and randomly installing components, the Perian would probably be a better choice since its component package supports most codecs commonly used in the AVI wrapper. (If you install it, read the section covering which codecs that may create conflicts.)
How do I figure out what I need to get the sound out of this file?
The normal approach is to check the "Inspector" or 'Info" windows to determine what codecs were used to create the file. In this case, you would check to see what codec was used to compress the audio content.

MSI P35 Platinum - No fans so no additional Cooling Needed?

With the idea of supporting a quiet but powerful system, I had intended to buy the MSI 875X Platinum, but I just saw the new passively cooled MSI P35 Platinum. Can I really get by using the MSI P35 Platinum with no fans or additional cooling, running:
-Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe Processor 2.4GHz, 1066FSB
-4GB Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 DDR2-800
-MSI GeForce 8600 GTS NX8600GTS-T2D256EZ-HD Video Card
-Zalman ZM600-HP HeatPipe Cooled 600w PSU
I won't be overclocking; I'd just like an updated, quiet system with power to spare; will be used for photoshop.

For those who don't know the Antec P180/P182 has the PSU in a separate chamber at the bottom of the case so it can chuck the cpu's heat straight out of two 120mm fans in top and rear. There is also a 3rd 120mm fan in lower chamber blowing onto the PSU. All three Antec fans are fitted with HI-Med-Low switches. I find Low to be good.
120mm fans push a decent amount of air on low RPM and are much quieter than 90mm.
There is room to fit two more of your own fans on the Upper HD cage. One to draw air in from the front of the case and one that blows straight on the graphics card. If you use both at once it creates a wind tunnel but means you cannot use it for hard drives. Although you could just fit the front fan and have it blow across your HD. I have my disks in the lower chamber to keep their heat away from the motherboard, and have done the wind tunnel option.
If I could change one thing I would have bought slower RPM or adjustable extra fans because they are louder than the built in Antec fans.
Hope this makes sense lol.
To be honest, you don't really need the extra fans if silence is more important, but my room is very warm and I plan to overclock.
