Address Bar (browser history)

I'm trying to delete some sites I've visted. I cleared browser history and cleaned the cache, but when I reopen the browser and enter a letter (doesn't matter which letter) some prior sites that I have visited (with the appropriate letter...ie a or b) show up. How can I delete those sites?

Safari autocompletes to your bookmarks as well as your history. If sites are showing up after you have cleared history, you should see if you have a bookmark to the site.
You can check quickly by opening the bookmarks view (book icon to the left of the bookmarks bar) and then typing part of the name of the site or URL in the search field in the find banner of the bookmarks view (not the google/yahoo search field).

  • Topic : Address Bar (browser history)

The above topic was previously posted and archived without an answer (strange?) but having tried everything previously suggested, even uninstalling Safari and reinstalling it doesn't clear the address bar of its history. Any ideas, other than to remove Safari completely!...?

Address bar history comes from the History file and your Bookmarks file.
If you've cleared the history in Safari then you'd need to remove the offending items from your bookmarks as well (not ideal...).
Try typing a space character at the beginning of the address to stop Safari autofilling.

  • Delete/Reset Address Bar History

How can I delete the address bar's history. In-other-words when I type an address in how can I reset it so that when I begin to type it doesn't automatically attempt to finish an address for me? Like when I type "www.app" it doesn't attempt to finish it with "www.apple.com"?
    Thanks for any help,
    Tony

    Tony,
If you want to eliminate autofill entries you must Reset Safari: Apple provide a quick way to empty the cache, clear cookies, erase history and reset autofill information. This can often provide a quick fix for improving performance. The disadvantage is that you will need to re-enter log in information on sites that had previously stored data in cookies.Any URL information from your Bookmarks will remain valid and will show up in autofill.
You should also Empty the Cache.

  • Firefox doesn't delete the browsing history in the address bar

No matter what you do with Firefox in clearing the browsing history by going to History -> Clear Recent History and deleting everything or resetting FF by going to Troubleshooting information, Firefox doesn't delete the browsing history. The website you have browsed still appear in the address bar.
Several people already have complained about this issue (see thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/939028) and the answer from the Firefox staff is that there is got to be a malware. This is not true, I've seen versions of Firefox in clean computers both Windows and Mac with Firefox doing the same thing, or more like not doing what it's supposed to do: clean the browsing history.
How unsafe is that. Where is your privacy? Firefox has to find a way to fix this glitch. Something tells me they're doing it on purpose because it hasn't been fixed after the complains.

You can delete the places.sqlite file if you aren't able to clear all history.

Are that entries that appear if you click the arrow at the far right of the location bar?
Do these items have a star to indicate that they are bookmarks?

Sounds like your are in Full Screen Mode. Tap the F11 key to turn Full Screen Mode on or off. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Netbooks#Full_screen

  • Address bar won't suggest my history

So basically the address bar will not suggest my history browsing or my bookmarks. I try to check the Privacy section but there is nothing unusual, and I check about:config but none of the pref is wrong too. I even try restart in Safe mode but the problem keep persist. Any help would be appreciate.

You can check these pref on the <b>about:config</b> page and if they are bold (user set) then reset them via the right-click context menu.

  • Address URL bar and History

In some browsers you are allowed to customize your history even moreso than Safari lets you do. And you can customize your "automatic fill in the address URL bar".
What I want to do is not have a history AT ALL in safari or at the least have it delete every time I quit Safari.
I also DO NOT want the autofill to occur when I start typing a URL in the address bar.
Is there any way to accomplish both of these tasks?
    Thanks.

    Hi
Regarding the auto-fill in the URL, the only easy workaround is to press the spacebar once before entering the address.
Regarding History, if you want no trace of History entries, either begin your session by going to the Safari Menu, selecting "Private Browsing", or at the end of your session, go to the History Menu and select "Clear History". Note, if you don't use Private Browsing, you'll need to "empty cache" in the Safari Menu to remove these related entries.
Clearing History will not stop the URL prompts, unless Private Browsing is first selected. To fully clear these prompts you would need to delete Bookmarks and Cache entries too. Somewhat daunting, and not very intuitive.

  • The Url History in the address bar is not working anymore. Reinstalling/Updating does not fix this. How to I get this working again?

I'm talking about the Address Bar.
For example: You type in Google and it shows www.google.com etc. Because this is in your history.
But this has stopped working since I emptied my cookies. But not my history. I also checked if my history is still there. Which it is.
And I cant find out why at all.
I'm sorry if I really can't give much info. But this is what I concluded. Seeing English ain't my native language. My google searches for this question seem to be either in the wrong direction or this is something that never happened before.

Tools>Options>Privacy - Click the drop down menu under Location Bar and set when using the location bar, suggest to - History and Bookmarks.

  • I can not delete my history and adding new bookmarks. Upgrading to later Firefox versions and/or re-installing didn't help. The address bar still shows the web addresses of old and whenever I make new bookmarks, it's always gone as if it was never made.

I can not delete my history and adding new bookmarks.
Upgrading to later Firefox versions and/or re-installing didn't rectify it either.
The address bar still shows the web addresses of old and whenever I make new bookmarks, it's always gone as if it was never made.
Also, I have noticed that every once in awhile you can not close tabs you've opened, either by pushing on the X button and/or clicking on the mouse to close it. Although closing the window and opening it again (without closing the Firefox application) seemed to rectify the problem in the short term, it's becoming quite annoying.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== the Firefox is being used

    I think I have a solution.
First, download the add-on SQManager. This should be included with FireFox, it is really good.
Look for the file '''moz_hosts''' in the folder '''places.sqlite'''.
Don't delete the file, just delete the information in the file. My file has over 3600 websites, which go back years!! I did not know they were there, but I was frustrated about not being able to get rid of them. They popped up every time I used the address bar. Clearing my history would not get rid of them.
This is where they are stored!! I found that by deleting the pesky web site from '''moz_hosts''', it does not appear in my address bar anymore!!!
I think that if I just delete all the websites in moz_hosts....
    Wa-la...History Gone!!!
As long as you don't delete the file, just empty it, FireFox won't know the difference. It will just keep adding websites to it until you empty it again.
Why running "clear recent history" doesn't do this, I don't know. You are doing manually what "clear recent history" is not doing.
Please tell me if you see any flaw in this.

  • Cannot remove autocomplete entry from address bar; have already cleared history, and entry is not in the drop-down menu of the address bar either.

I am having problems removing an autocomplete entry from my address bar; I have tried clearing my history, so it's no longer in that, and I do not have it bookmarked either, so it's not getting the URL from that location either. The autocomplete entry isn't even showing up in the drop down menu, so I can't even scroll through that to delete it.
Basically, I want to be able to type "st" and go to "store.steampowered.com"; however, despite numerous times of typing in "st" and then going down into the drop-down menu to choose "store.steampowered.com", the bar continues to autocomplete "steamtrades.com", which is exceptionally annoying because I do not have that website bookmarked, or in my history, yet it continues to autocomplete to that address, which I do not want it to autocomplete to, and cannot figure out how to remove because I've already cleared my history multiple times, do not have it bookmarked, and it is not showing up in the drop down of the address bar for me to go down and force delete it.

Did you try to remove some letters from steamtrades.com to see if that bring this entry up in the drop-down list?
If it is not in the history then it might be present with a typed=1 flag indicating that you have typed or pasted it in the location bar.
You can use the SQLite Manager extension in Firefox to inspect the places.sqlite file to see if this entry comes up in the moz_places table.
    *SQLite Manager: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/sqlite-manager/
    <pre><nowiki>SELECT datetime(visit_date/1000000,'unixepoch') AS visit_date, url, title, visit_count, frecency
    FROM moz_places, moz_historyvisits
    WHERE moz_places.id = moz_historyvisits.place_id AND url LIKE '%steamtrades.com%'</nowiki></pre>

  • I cannot get rid of the history in my address bar.

Whenever I click the down arrow on the address bar a list of sites appears. I can not delete them. If I try hovering my mouse over them and pressing delete on the keyboard they come back the next time I hit the down arrow. They also won't go away when I clear history.

The same problem has been dogging me for a couple of months and I think I may have the solution. The address bar auto-complete includes addresses from you bookmarks. If the one you delete is there because it was bookmarked at some time in the past, you won't be able to delete it from the address bar directly. Go to Bookmarks/Organize and search for the offending site address. Edit it or delete it from there and it should fix the problem. It may be in the "Most Visited" section of the bookmarks.

  • Why can't I see the URL in the address bar when I click on a hyperling, as opposed to typing in a URL? I send a lot of links, but if I can't copy and paste them from your address bar I'll have to abandon Firefox and use another browser.

I just gave you the details. When I click on a hyperlink, the URL of the site/page is not in the address box at the top of the page.

Type '''about:config''' in the Location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key. When you see a warning, click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''' button.
-> In the '''Filter bar''', type '''browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled'''
    * Right click the preference '''browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled''' and click '''Toggle'''
    * The value is now set to '''False'''
-> In the '''Filter bar''', type '''browser.urlbar.trimURLs'''
    * Right click the preference '''browser.urlbar.trimURLs''' and click '''Toggle'''
    * The value is now set to '''False'''
-> Close the '''about:config''' tab and then Restart Firefox.
Check and tell if its working.

  • My address bar and menu bar are missing, unable to back up history or bookmarks..

I unchecked menu bar then unchecked address bar. Now I can't right click and check them back to make them appear. Now I can't back up my history or my bookmarks. I have no help> or menu.

<u>'''Can't see the Menu Bar'''</u> (File, Edit, View, History...Help)? Hold down the key ( key in OSX) and press the following letters in this exact order: V T M
The Menu Bar should now be displayed permanently, unless you turn it off again (View > Toolbars). Turning the Menu Bar on and off is a new feature in version 3.6.
    See: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Menu+bar+is+missing

  • I no longer have any toolbars, address bar or any access to any usual functions. How can I restore these functions in my browser?

All functions are gone from the top of my browser - no menu bar, no tool bars of any kind, no address bar... nothing. Right click or left click - nothing to use. How can I restore these common functions?

'''F11''' to get you out of FullScreen mode?
If you hid the Menu bar and the Navigation bar - hit the '''Alt''' key to show the Menu bar, then open View > Toolbars and select Menu bar, so it has a check-mark.

  • When changing "browser.newtab.url" is there any way to prevent the address bar from getting focus?

When I change "browser.newtab.url" to about:home and open a new tab, focus is set to the address bar not the search box on the firefox home page. The same thing happens if i change the url to google.com or another search engine. Is there any way to prevent this from happening.

Custom new Tab has a small bug if the start page is exactly the same as the new tab page. Then the focus of the start page is on the address bar. Just leave the "www." out in the startpage and use "www." in the new tab page then it works perfectly. e.g.
    Startpage: google.com
    new Tab page : www.google.com
Now the focus of the start page is on the search box.
