Address book and Mail help needed

Greetings. I recently switched from Entourage to Mail. I'm having some troubles with Address Book and Mail. I hope that someone can help.
1. I can't seem to find an easy way to determine if an email address is already in the Address Book. In Entourage, if the email address is not in the address book, it gives me the option to add it with a link at the top of the mail window. How can I tell if an email address from an incoming mail is in the Address Book or not?
2. In Mail, when I right-click on a mail address that I am sure is in the Address Book, it often gives me the option to "Add to Address Book". Other times, it will give me the option to "Open in Address Book". There doesn't seem to be a pattern. Is there something that I can do to fix this inconsistency?
3. In Entourage, when adding a new email address to the address book, I can just click on the button in the mail window to do that, which automatically opens the new address, and then I can edit information and add a category. In Mail, the same functionality requires several separate steps (Add to Address Book, open Address Book, find new email address, click on edit to make changes, drag to Group). Is there some way to streamline the process in Mail?
Thanks much.

I have the same problem as #2.
I have a contact who sends me email from two addresses. However, in mail, the two address return different sender names - one is his initial "j" and the other is his full name.
This makes it annoying to sort threads by the "from" field, or search for that sender.
I added both to the address book, opened address book, and selected "merge contacts."
They merged. But in mail, they still return different sender names! Merge failed!
After merge, all the "j" emails still offer "add to address book" when i click them. When I do this, it creates a new address card, and if I merge this with the old merged card, then the email goes back to offering "add to address book" instead of updating all those emails with the sender's full name. Basically Mail is ignoring the address book just for that sender!
I tried "add to address book" -> quit mail -> open address book
There was the entry.
Then open mail,
There was the email, "open in address book" appeared and so I did.
I edited the name to match the full name.
Go back to mail. Still listed in mailbox as "j" instead of full name.
Now "add to address book" has returned to the choices!
Seems like a bug!!!

  • Backup ical, address book, and mail automator action

It seems very odd to me that there are no automator actions to backup ical, address book and mail. I have looked around to no avail. Am I mistaken, do such actions exist?
I use super duper to back up my hardrive on an automatic schedule, but I would love to make a workflow that would backup my ical, address book databases and my email. I don't want to have to restore my entire had drive from my SuperDuper image if I lose only my ical database.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Jake

I'm guessing the reason might be that Apple want you to use their dotmac account for this purpose.
The only way around it is to backup the individual folders that are used by those apps. eg:
    Macintosh HD/Users/Your User Name/Library/Application Support/Address Book
    Macintosh HD/Users/Your User Name/Library/Mail
    Macintosh HD/Users/Your User Name/Library/Safari
    Macintosh HD/Users/Your User Name/Library/Application Support/iCal
If needing to re-build, just drag and drop these folders into place.

  • Address Book and Mail Lag on openning

I just installed Snow Leopard and now my Address Book and Mail hang for 10 mins before they start. And when I try and manipulate the Address book that lags before the operation completes, I thought SL was suppose to make things better? Somebody PLEASE HELP! This problem is happening on both my IMAC and Macbook. I also use Mobile Me.

Known issue with Smart Groups in Address Book...it's not Mail.
Delete all Smart Groups in Address Book and it will fix the problem for both...it takes a long time to do since you get the spinning beach ball when you click on anything in Address Book, so give yourself about an hour.
There are other threads about the issue...hopefully it will be fixed in an update...good luck!

  • Microsoft Exchange Categories in iCal, Address Book and Mail

I work in a Microsoft environment with my MacBook Pro and would like to use iCal, Address Book and Mail as my default applications rather than Microsoft Oulook 2011, however, there is not support for the Microsoft Exchange Categories to be replicated into the various Apple applications. This results in my address book not to differentiate any longer from my contact categories stored on the Exchange server, nor my calendar. Categories can be created in iCal and other Apple applications but it then requires for the event or contact to be duplication "On my Mac" which makes me loose my synchronization with other systems. Any idea about to fix that?

Same issue here. I would love to migrate to iCal but the lack of support for categories is a limiting factor. Same applies to Contacts.

  • Address Book and Mail - Using Groups for e-mail

I've noticed something strange about Mail and Address Book in Tiger:
I created a new Group in Address Book. The Group contains people who are involved in a project. I have names, home addresses and phone numbers for eveyone, but a few people do not have e-mail. When a try using this Group to send out an e-mail message, Mail warns me that John Smith does not appear to have a valid e-mail address. I can't send the message unless I select only those in the group who have e-mail addresses and only send to them. This is a pain.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in Tiger's Address Book and Mail.app? How can I get around this? I have several Groups like this that contain entries with no e-mail.

It's not a bug in Address Book, it's a limitation. Your only way to get around that is to either remove those from the group, or give them all the same email address; i.e., send those to you so you are reminded that they didn't get the email and you have to notify them some other way.
And of course, when sending to more than one person, never put the recipients in the To or CC field; they should always go in the BCC field.

  • Connect to LDAP with Address Book and Mail

The admin guide for OD is pretty vague from what I've been able to figure out. How do I connect to my LDAP with Address Book and Mail? I'm sure this is a really simple setup and I'm just missing some minor detail.

  • A few months ago, my G5 started up with the address book and mail opened at startup. They are not in startup items, and I cannot get this to stop. Any suggestions?

A few months ago, my power mac G5 began starting up with the address book and mail already open on the desk top.
Neither of these is in my startup items, so I am at a loss as to stop this behavior.
    Any suggestions?

Are they in Login items under System Preferences/Users/Login Items?
In the Dock, right click the Address Book and Mail icons, select Options, and make sure "Open at Login" is not selected.

  • Switching from Entourge to Mail, Address Book and iCal - HELP!

Has anyone out there previously been a fan of Entourage but switched to Mail, Address Book and iCal on Mac? Im consistently disappointed in Entourage and it's database corruptions, but dont want to have to open three apps to do the same thing! Anyone out there made this switch and rectified this dilemma in their minds?
I truly wish the next Mac OS would merge these into one program like Entourage, but until then, any insight?
    Thanks!
    Kevin

In Mail.app, try pulling down the File menu and select the "import mailboxes" item.
To sync your PDA, use Apple's iSinc. Info on iSync is available here ...

  • Address Book and Mail Problem

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and I hope that someone can help me. I have 178 addresses in my Address Book. I added a new person today, my new boss actually. I went into Mail to address an email to her and her email address will not come up. I have deleted and added her again to Address Book and still the same thing. Am I at maximum capacity on Address Book or something?
    Thanks
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thank you. Update my system? Do you mean the OS or the Mail program? My bosses name is Rose. When I type in Rose, Mail doesn't link to the Address Book. Neither the last name or the email address appears.

  • Address Book and Mail frustrations

How do I make it so that whatever name I put in my address book and assign to a person it stays that way FOREVER?!? I'll go into address book and change it but as the person emails me back with whatever name they have set to it, it changes again. For example lets say my friend "John Doe" emails me and it comes up as John Doe. I go into address book and just make it say "John". The next time he emails me, it comes up as John Doe again. Can't address book be permanent and unwavering? I just want my address to be what I made them and nothing else.

The deleting of "John Doe" in "Previous Receipents" and the change in "John" in Address Book only helps for a short time - as soon, as John Doe sends a mail again named "John Doe", the Address Book entry will be manipulated again from "John" to "John Doe".
How in the world do i prevent this? How can I switch off this hole annoying and manipulating "Previous entry" thing, which always messes up my Address Book? I do not want to change Address Book entries and clean the Previous Receipent list each and ever day...
    HELP, PLEASE!!!

  • Can I change the size of the font in Address Book and Mail?

  • Address book and Mail's address book different??

I thought all Snow Leopard applications shared the same central address book but when I change, say an email address in the main "Address Book" and later address an email, the old email still comes up. When I open address book from within Mail, the entry is different than the one in the main "Address Book" from the dock.
Am I somehow running two different address books? How do I get them to share the same one?
    Thanks.

Great. That does seem to be where Mail was getting it's information. I just deleted that whole list and life is better. Thanks for the info.

The isync database, as I called it, is really just the master database from which ical, address book, bookmarks, etc., are stored, and it's used for syncing with the .mac service. Entourage can sync with it too, just go to the Entourage menu, choose Preferences, and look under General Preferences for Sync Services. Then check the boxes you want -- I just wanted the contacts to be the same in Entourage and Address Book so I only checked that one. The calendar is kind of funky because iCal uses separate calendars to group events, and I think if you check that box, iCal will then get a new calendar called Entourage, or something like that, in which all the Entourage events will go to and from. That is, I think Entourage will sync only with that iCal calendar, but I could be wrong about that since I don't use it.
Once you check the contacts box, Entourage will populate with all the contacts in your Address Book, and I think if you don't already have contacts there (that is if you've only been using Entourage for your contacts) then it will ask you if you want to put all your Entourage contacts into Address Book. I just don't remember.
Surely someone else out there is more familiar with this, but it should get you started.

  • Address book and Mail header font

    Hi all.
Have a question regarding changing the font in the headers in mail and in address book. How do I do that?
All my email headers are showing up in some type of bold condensed font as well as the information for any of my info in addres book.
This has changed "all of a sudden". I'm guessing that there is a font conflict or even missing font somewhere?
I've deleted any duplicate fonts, run font finangler, deleted fontbook as I use font reserve as my font manager, cleaned out all the font caches, cleaned out any misc fonts in the system/library/fonts folder, the library/fonts folder, the user/library/fonts folder and the applications/system/library/fonts folder.....any other suggestions?
My guess is that I'm missing a font but have no idea which one and from where?
    Thanks for any help!

    HI David.
Thanks for the response. I had already seen that article. After I made my original post, I spent a couple of hours "experimenting" with my fonts and various folders and I did get things working properly.
What I figured out is that I need to have the Helvetica dfont in my user/system/library/font folder and make sure there aren't ANY Arial fonts in there, they conflict with each other for some reason.
What was weird is that I had to do this in a particular order. Had to remove the Arial fonts AND the Helvetica dfont, logout and then back in, then put the Helvetica dfont in the folder, logout and back in and everything was fine. If I didn't do it in that order, the fonts were garbled....who knows.
Thanks again for the response, alls well that ends well!

  • Building Groups w/Address Book and Mail

I've built groups using the Mail help.  Groups show up fine in Address Book.  The problem is when I try to send an email to a group (have clicked on the group itself and have also just designated the group in the address bar of the email) only some members of the group are showing up in the address bar.  I've compared cards and the info entered is identical, except for the differences in email addresses.  Am I missing something here?  Thanks.

If you're running Lion, as your profile says, why are you posting in the Tiger forum. Mail in Tiger is very different than Mail in Lion.
