Address Book and OS X Lion Mail.

When I compose a message and I specify the recipient names, I have discovered that the auto-fill, meaning if I type “a”, I get a list of all people (beginning with “a”) that I have received or sent in the past, appears to make my selection of recipients. I thought that only the names in my address book would appear. Where Mail keeps all the other names not in my address book?

Hi,
Look in Mail's Window menu > Previous Recipients.
Best wishes

  • How do I reinstall Address Book and iCal in Lion?

Title says it all. I deleted iCal and Address Book long ago with AppZapper. Now that I have an iPhone, I actually have need of those apps. Problem is, I have Lion, and thus do not have an install disk. How would I go about reinstalling those apps in Lion?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

  • Microsoft Exchange Categories in iCal, Address Book and Mail

I work in a Microsoft environment with my MacBook Pro and would like to use iCal, Address Book and Mail as my default applications rather than Microsoft Oulook 2011, however, there is not support for the Microsoft Exchange Categories to be replicated into the various Apple applications. This results in my address book not to differentiate any longer from my contact categories stored on the Exchange server, nor my calendar. Categories can be created in iCal and other Apple applications but it then requires for the event or contact to be duplication "On my Mac" which makes me loose my synchronization with other systems. Any idea about to fix that?

Same issue here. I would love to migrate to iCal but the lack of support for categories is a limiting factor. Same applies to Contacts.

  • Address Book and Mail - Using Groups for e-mail

I've noticed something strange about Mail and Address Book in Tiger:
I created a new Group in Address Book. The Group contains people who are involved in a project. I have names, home addresses and phone numbers for eveyone, but a few people do not have e-mail. When a try using this Group to send out an e-mail message, Mail warns me that John Smith does not appear to have a valid e-mail address. I can't send the message unless I select only those in the group who have e-mail addresses and only send to them. This is a pain.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in Tiger's Address Book and Mail.app? How can I get around this? I have several Groups like this that contain entries with no e-mail.

It's not a bug in Address Book, it's a limitation. Your only way to get around that is to either remove those from the group, or give them all the same email address; i.e., send those to you so you are reminded that they didn't get the email and you have to notify them some other way.
And of course, when sending to more than one person, never put the recipients in the To or CC field; they should always go in the BCC field.

Why does Lion KEEP reversing changes you make in address book and other applications without your consent and without wanting it to??? Plus address book will NOT import old address book contacts from Snow Lepoard 10.6 and keep them.  This Lion OXS 7 is .. becoming very frustrating ... it will NOT keep changes made in the Address Book and it has destroyed my contacts which I only have electronically since 10.4 in my address book. I am NOT happy with this OS7 it has a lot of issues and faults.  How can one stop automatic reversing of data when inputting???
    Please help!
Wished I NEVER upgraded to this Lion!!!

Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
    Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.

  • Switching from Entourge to Mail, Address Book and iCal - HELP!

Has anyone out there previously been a fan of Entourage but switched to Mail, Address Book and iCal on Mac? Im consistently disappointed in Entourage and it's database corruptions, but dont want to have to open three apps to do the same thing! Anyone out there made this switch and rectified this dilemma in their minds?
I truly wish the next Mac OS would merge these into one program like Entourage, but until then, any insight?
    Thanks!

  • Migrate existing email and address book from Entourage to OSX Mail?

I have a corrupted version of Entourage and it was suggested I go to Mail. I was also told migration from Entourage was a 'snap'....where do I get detailed steps (what manual) to do this migration? I want to move existing mail, (inbox, sent mail, etc)and my address book.
If it's in fact a 'snap' maybe the instructions can be included in any repsonses I might receive...??
Thx for any help you might offer!

If your Entourage database is corrupt and not fully accessible or accessible at all by Entourage or you are unable to launch the Entourage application, this won't be a snap but the Mail application includes an import mailbox function with Entourage listed as the first email client to choose from. This process does not import Entourage account setup information, only Entourage mailboxes.
At Mail's menu bar, go to File and select Import Mailboxes.
Under "Import Data From", select Microsoft Entourage and then the Continue button.
You will see a connecting to Microsoft Entourage message while the Entourage application launches which is required as part of the import process.
A window will be provided with a list of available Entourage mailboxes to import with all available mailboxes selected by default.
Select Continue and an Import named folder will be created in the mailboxes drawer with all imported mailboxes available within.
For Entourage address book contacts you can do this a number of ways. One way - create a folder on the Desktop named Entourage Contacts or whatever you prefer.
Highlight/select all Entourage address book contacts and then click on and drag the highlighted contacts to the folder created on the Desktop. This will create a separate vCard file for each Entourage contact within this folder.
Launch Address Book and at the menu bar go to File > Import and select vCards navigating to/within the folder on the Desktop that contains the vCard files exported from the Entourage address book.

  • Address book and Mail's address book different??

I thought all Snow Leopard applications shared the same central address book but when I change, say an email address in the main "Address Book" and later address an email, the old email still comes up. When I open address book from within Mail, the entry is different than the one in the main "Address Book" from the dock.
Am I somehow running two different address books? How do I get them to share the same one?
    Thanks.

Great. That does seem to be where Mail was getting it's information. I just deleted that whole list and life is better. Thanks for the info.

  • IPhone email, Mail and Address Book (and MobileMe)

    Hi All.
Can someone please explain to me how Mail is able to use the Address Book contacts - if in fact it does use the Address Book contacts - on my laptop and my desktop?
I am currently on Thunderbird but have other software that I am told syncs to Address Book. This would make my life easier. I am thinking about converting to Mail instead of Thunderbird (to cut out one step in the "food chain" but I want to be sure I am making the right move and understand what I am doing.
Also, can anyone explain to me what my iPhone email is accessing when it tries to do an autocomplete?
Do the "Contacts" on my iPhone sync up to Address Book in any way via MobileMe??
Thanks for help on any of that...
    Jon

    Hi Daiya.
I can't tell you how much help this is.
Yes, iPhone Contacts sync to Address Book, via either iTunes sync or MobileMe.
This is sort of funny isn't it? That they are called Contacts on the iPhone and Address Book on MobileMe and on my laptop?
I believe the iPhone autocomplete checks both your Contacts AND any recently used addresses--there's no built-in method to clear the recently used addresses, as far as I know.
This is true for both MobileMe mail, GMail and for my website based email ([email protected]), yes?
You might also check out Postbox--from what I understand, it's built on Thunderbird, but it says it talks to the Mac Address Book and other parts of OS X.
    Thanks!
Integration with OS X features does seem to be Thunderbird's weak spot--I actually use MS Entourage, which has reasonable integration, much better than Thunderbird. I'd say it's not so much that you need to cut out a step in the food chain as that Thunderbird just doesn't participate in the OS X food chain.
Hi. Thanks. I'm planning on getting CardScan (where I handle Business Cards) synced up with Address Book. I can do this and it would be really simple I am told.
The question is now where do I go from there.
I have not read up on PostBox yet but I am starting to think that I need to perfect my Address Book in Thunderbird and export it to Address Book. Then I can start handling email in Mail.
If I do this, my thought is that my business cards will be synced with Address Book, Address Book will be synced with Mail (on my laptop and my desktop) and Address Book will be synced with my iPhone Contacts (where I compose email).
    How does that sound??!!
    Long time goal over here...
