Address Book app disappeared; how can I reinstall it?

Out of the blue, my Address Book app disappeared. The icon in the Dock has a question mark on it, and the application itself is no longer in my Applications folder, or anywhere on the drive. Even stranger, it's not in any of my Time Machine backups, even though it was working and present until yesterday.
Mind you, I'm not talking about the data. it's that the app itself is gone. Interestingly, my email still seems to act as if the Address Book contact information is still present. But if I select an address in an email "from" field, for example, and say "Open in Address Book," nothing happens.
Now here's an even weirder part. I also have a recent backup of my Apple Mail and Address Book using Email Backup Pro. After seeing that the Address Book app seems to have also disappeared from my Time Machine backups, I opened Email backup Pro and did a restore of my Address Book. The program reported that the Address Book was successfully restored, but nothing changed -- the Address Book app was still nowhere to be found. I've done this twice.
I also have my Address Book data on my iPod Touch (thankfully). Synching does nothing -- nothing changes on the iPod or on the hard disk, in terms of Address Book.
I'm baffled. Although I'd like to know what caused this, my more immediate concern is to get a functioning Address Book installed again. I booted from the Snow Leopard disc, but could see no option to install just the Address Book.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, John.

    Did you try:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you don't have the original discs that came with the computer, then you can install the retail version of Snow Leopard:
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.

If for some reason you failed to transfer any apps purchased on the iphone to your computer, then you will need to redownload them:

The problem with accessing the content of the disks is the CD Drive does not seem to access them. It also has a heck of a time ejecting them. Other disks seem to read. The unit came with imovie disks and I can use them. The disks look perfectly good no scratches but they just don't work, I was hoping I could just get a online copy of the address book to replace the one that seems to be missing. Or find it somewhere on my drive. Have no clue where to look though.

  • Address Book erased.  How can I restore?

I just bought a new iPhone (my first) and synced it to my computer for the first time. My Address Book on my Mac was erased. When I was at AT&T store, the contact information from my old cell phone was transferred to my contact list on my new iPhone. That contact list was transferred to the Address book on my Power Mac but all of the existing contacts were replaced by the contact list on my iPhone. (GULP!) I believe that I located a file in the Address Book directory named: AddressBook.data.previous. I am hoping that I can restore my previous address book to what it was before I synced my iPhone. I also have back up files on an exterior hard drive. How can I restore the old address book, and then, how do I merge it with the contact list that now resides on my new iPhone? I am praying somebody can help me to restore!

    Hi BDAqua--
Thank you so much for replying. After writing my message I made several horrible discoveries. Not only had my Address Book been wiped clean, but my iCal was also wiped clean. In addition my Firefox wasn't loading properly so I closed and reopened it and found that it was like opening Firefox for the first time. My personal toolbar and all my bookmarks are gone. Also, I have an email account that utilizes Thunderbird. The email account is gone. I was prompted to create a new account from scratch. Additionally, all my Desktop files are gone, the Dock was missing all of the program icons that I had put there, and configurations that I had set up such as the right mouse click button are all gone!
There was one piece of information that I left out of my description in my first post, and this may be important. When I connected my iPhone to sync for the first time, I was prompted in iTunes if I wanted to name my iphone "Apple User's (or Appleuser's) iPhone". Rather than just put a different name in that field, I blundered by renaming the username in the Finder Sidebar. It was from that point on that I started having the problems. When I renamed it back to "Appleuser" later on, none of the missing items returned.
So, I don't know if renaming the user in the Finder Sidebar, or syncing my iPhone for the first time caused this problem. I think (hope) somehow that I just inadvertently effected the user information. I think it still must be on my computer, but I don't know how to get it back again. I want to mention again that I do have a backup external hard drive, so chances are that I have the files intact there, if not on my internal Mac HD.
Are there any ideas how I can restore my settings so that I can get these lost items back again?

  • Recovering backup duplicates address book... how can I fix ?

Hi everyone, i´m BES and NOTES administrator in my company in Brazil, some employers are reclaim me the adress book of blackberry 9000 ( and 8900 and 8300) are duplicating !
this is the problem: when the employer receive the new BlackBerry, he make a backup of address book, and then recover this backup on the new phone, but ON the adress book dont appears DESKTOP, appears UNKNOWN... so, when the sync starts, duplicates all address becouse it creates a new book called DESKTOP.. how can I fix this?
    thankzz

For those that don't want to download any additional software and Just want to make a return label you can also duplicate your own address card within the address book application the number of times you need it in on your label sheet. Highlight them all, then print. Once you've finished you can just type in your own name in the search bar and delete everything except your original card which is obvious because that card has the shadow of a person.
The other way around this is to make a card called Return Address. and put your name and address in the address area. Duplicate the card so that you have the same about cards as labels, print and then delete when you have finished.
I am not saying this way is perfect but at least there is a work around if you need it.
    Have a good day.

  • My iCloud account is syncing mobile me address book versus apple id address book...how can I change this?

My icloud account is syncing my mobile me address book vs. my apple id address book.  How do I change this?

You have to delete the old account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • IPhoto disappeared, how can I reinstall it?

    MacBook Pro
    OSX 10.8.2
I just got this Pro yesterday. Anyhow, I screwed up when I was trying to move some old files from a Time Machine backup on my old iMac so I reinstalled OSX according to Apple's instructions (Cmd/R). It took all night but all looked well. I then copied the files I need from the iMac onto a hard drive, plugged it into my new Pro and copied them over. Everything worked fine until I went to try iPhoto. It was gone! I've searched for the iPhoto app with Spotlight and no dice. I folled some instructions I found here (reindix) - still no dice.
This Pro does not have a CD drive not did it come with a USB dongle. How do I get the iPhoto application back? Thanks.
    jor

download and install from the App store - you log in with the Apple ID that you set the computer up with - you may need to accept the App first

  • How can i reinstall address book

Does anyone know how to reinstall the address book in Lion?
Most tutorials I've seen assume that you have an installation disk, which Lion obviously doesn't have.
I keep getting the message that I cannot delete or change the Address Book as it is an essential app. It seems to be corrupted and I cannot open it at all.

No - that didn't work. I have the error message in case that helps:

  • My copy of Address Book App was erased from Maverick. How can I replace it?

Address Book App was deleted from the iMac running Maverick. My other iMac runs Snow Leopard and that version of Address Book 5.0.3. won't run on Maverick. Where can I d/l the software?
And how can I copy in the addresses from 5.0.3?
    Appreciate the help.

I bought this iMac and another from a non-prof group that got a gift of newer Macs. The addresses in Address Book were theirs. I thought I was deleting them, but deleted the entire address app. This is the only machine I have running Mavericks. Others are on Snow Leopard.
I do not have the Mavericks install disk but I'll ask for it tomorrow.
PeachMac offered to install Address Book and any other system software for $69. But that's still not my contact list of 200 or so.
    I'm investigating resources.
First I have to send my broken, no-boot MacBookPro to Florida for a motherboard or whatever it needs. I have a Snow Leopard Time Machine back-up for that. I doubt there's a way to Restore that back-up to a Mavericks machine. Apple ain't that kind.

  • I recently downloaded the 5.1.1 and all of a sudden the contact icon has disappeared. I can still access my contact list through the phone icon, but I want the contact icon back. How can I reinstall it?

I recently downloaded the 5.1.1 and all of a sudden the contact icon has disappeared. I can still access my contact list through the phone icon, but I want the contact icon back. How can I reinstall it?

You can't delete it.  Look on all your screens and inside all your folders.  If you still can't find it go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.  This will restore the home screen to its original configuration but may move other apps around to do so.

  • While installing Lion my Bluetooth module disappeared. How can I reinstall it?

While installing Lion my Bluetooth module disappeared. How can I reinstall it?

You ought to get a dialog asking to install the first time you run an app that needs it
    Details here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1167855/installing_mountain_lion_what_you_need_t o_know.html
    The relevant bit is this:
Note that the first time you try to load a webpage or run an app that requires Java, Mountain Lion will prompt you to download and install the Java runtime, even if you upgraded from Snow Leopard or Lion and you’d previously installed Java. This is normal—you shouldn’t worry that installing Mountain Lion somehow “lost” any of your data or apps.
Or you can go to the Apple Downloads page and search for Java
