Address Book as a Data Base

I added a new name in Address Book of my Mac and Sync'd it to my Curve.
The "name" is Passport and I changed a phone # to Custom "number".
It moved the name over but none of the other data.
Any thoughts?  I don't have enough data to go out and buy a data base program.

When I send an email to a smart group - nothing other than the email address is sent right?
Yes. You should set Mail not to show all the addresses in the group.

  • Search should look at address book notes & application data

Search is basically useless to me, I used to have the ability to categorize my address book, or at the very least make a note in a contact that was searchable. (For example, "work" in the note section of a contact would result in search results of just the contacts with this note, go figure!) I also have lots of stuff in alternate notes programs that is not searchable. Not much of a reach to make data entered into an "i-device" searchable, I think a few software engineers should be able to tackle this insurmountable problem! I paid $500 for a device that has fewer options than my Palm Pilot did 8 years ago!(and in regards to searches, is absolutely inferior)Sounds like the only way to get apple to address an issue is to make lots of noise in this support forum. Sorry to waste anyone's time.

I just had this same problem. I use multiple mac computers that I sync manually because of a previous idisk issue. I noticed as I updated my cloud, the search function in address book quit working properly on each computer.
So created a new group list and I attempted to copy "All Contacts" into that group. It would not copy all my contacts into that group in one paste function. So I took all the the first 25 names and copied them. That worked. Then I moved to the next 26-50 names and so on. I noticed when I got to the fourth group of copying contacts that it did not paste and froze the application.
I quit address book, reopened it. All the contacts before the the fourth group were in the file. The search function worked on those names. I then went card by card and found one that had a "string" of data listed where an email address should I have been. So I deleted the corrupt card and now my address book search is working again.
Here is the short solve. Look for a corrupt card in your address book. I found the corrupt card by trying to copy it over to a new address group. The card that was corrupt just happened to be one that I had updated in the last week or so...
    Hope this helps.

  • Lion address book cards modification date?

Each card in the Snow Leopard address book showed a modification date; the ones in Lion don't.  Is there a way to add that back?

So far I can't find any.  I heavily use Address Book for a 400 member Mac user group and modification dates are important to me as I manage alot of member changes and do alot of importing via Address Book Importer, which doesn't automatically throw out the old vCard. I'm watching the development of a new app called Addresses in the App Store --- right now it is too new and untried for me to use it. Maybe that or another app will help us. I'm willing to pay for the old functionality of Snow Leopard's Address Book.
Lion's changes to Address Book are a big step back as far as I'm concerned.

  • Address Book Not Displaying Data

    Hi,
This morning I ran 10.4.8 and security updates on my MBP. Now when I open Address Book, I can see all my contacts listed, but not any of the data when I click on a name or search for one.
I have deleted prefs and tried reverting to AddressBook.data.previous in my user Library. I have also replaced my Address Book from my .Mac acct.
It's not that I have no contacts, but that I can't view them. Double clicking does nothing and editing simply depresses the Edit button, but I still see nothing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Another relatively straightforward thing that I’m realizing now you appear to not have tried yet (it could be a font issue, but I’m not sure) would be reinstalling the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update (which you’ve said you’ve already done), no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Address Book, change default date field?

I have added a date field to address book. I use it to set a creation date for a contact. Currently, the default content for this field is 12/31/2000.
Does anyone know a way to change this? I’d like the field year to be the current year.

    Hi Adnan,
I am fairly sure that you cannot access or change the behaviour of the date/time field to that extent. You can script the field to have a particular value or to be a constant from the date selected; but you cannot define the default value.

  • Address Book and iCal Data Files

In the standard Snow Leopard installation, what are the names of the data files for Address Book and iCal, and where are they stored? I have so much data in these two files that I want to be sure they're closely backed up.

you should back up your whole system not just those two files. then you'll never miss anything. what's your backup setup?
the address book data is stored in home directory/library/application support/address book and the ical data in home directory/library/calendars.

  • If I add a pic from address book to an eMail, how do I avoid anyone clicking on the pic seeing all my address book notes and data

If I add a picture from my Address Book to a mail message, anyone clicking on the picture can see teh entire address book entry, including private infor, passwords, etc.  How do I avoid this?

delete and re add the contact?
you could also try retyping and saving the information.

  • Address book loses all data and DUPLICATES numerous times

Address book is broke. After installing 10.4.3 I lost ALL my 600 addresses, they just disappeared. I restored from backup database no problem. BUT, now my address book is all confused!!!! I has duplicated the addresses. I resest and zeroed .mac, I reset my iPod addresses and also my bluetooth phone. However, THREE times I have opened address book to find my addresses have been duplicated again! I "merge" and look for duplicate adresses but that does not catch them all. I hope Apple releases new design. Address book is not working very well right now on my 12 inch powerbook G4 with 700meg RAM. Maybe someone can review with me how I should wipe out all previous info on Address book and restore a clean database of addresses. I have gone in an looked in library/Application Support/Address Book and replaced that folder already.

Hello Mark, welcome to the discussions. I think the confusion lies with the syncing software rather than AB itself. Try turning of syncing, then delete and restore your AB on the powerbook. Observe it for a couple of days without doing any syncing and I think you will find it is stable.

  • Repopulating itunes, address book, network problems, recovered data - help

    Hi
    This is a multi-topic question:
I had a dying HD. Used Install DVD/Disc Utilities to repair, then upgraded to Snow Leopard right after. When I rebooted, everything was gone. I had a new start-up disk/username account and no sign of the previous Home/Username. I used Disk Warrior and recovered all my files (I think). Moving things back in place is a challenge. Many problems.
    1. How do I move all my iTunes music back to the current Username?
    2. Where do I find the Address Book Data and how do I move that back the the current username?
    3. I cannot connect to the internet. Network diagnostics says "Internet failed, server failed" both wirelessly via Airport and when I connect via ethernet. My other Macs have no problems with the internet so it is something internal with this Mac.
    Any suggestions welcome

They said that MobileMe has a problem working with iTunes backup.
MobileMe has nothing to do with the iPhone's backup. Contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step with the iTunes sync process, but this is used when restoring an iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup only. This has nothing to do with syncing contacts direct with a supported application on your computer or over the air with a MobileMe or Exchange account.
Time Machine only keeps one backup and so once it backs up your copy of your address book, you're screwed.
    Baloney. Time Machine keeps:
Hourly backups for the last 24 hours.
Daily backups for the past month.
Weekly backups for all previous months.
You can go back in time to where your Address Book contacts are available with your Time Machine backup and restore from that.
Besides my Time Machine backup, I also use the MobileMe backup app to automatically backup my Address Book and iCal data on a weekly basis, and before I make any significant changes to my Address Book contacts - adding, deleting, or editing, I manually backup my Address Book data - at the menu bar go to File > Export > Address Book Archive. I have 3 backups for this data since the data is very important to me.
If your contacts are no longer available with your MobileMe online address book and no longer available with the Address Book on your Mac, with the Address Book launched, go back in time with Time Machine where your contacts in the Address Book were last available and select Restore. Done.

  • I get an error trying to use Apple Address Book with Word Mail merge - says it cannot open data file?

I am running MS Word 2011, latest Mac OS, and trying to use the Mail Merge option with the Apple Address Book as the data source.
However whenever I select the Apple Address Book as the data source, I get the error "Word was unable to open the data source".
    Anybody got any idea why?
    Thanks for your help

I am guessing you could have solved this little problem already but perhaps someone else may benefit:
I struggled with the same problem - not being able to use Mac Address Book (i.e. Contacts) with Word 2013 for mac mail-merge (on Mountain Lion and, now, on Mavericks) - with the exact same error message reported by Klausngigtoas above .
So I read lots of techie stuff on forums which passed a nice few hours but didn't help. Finally, with slumped, defeated expression, I gave up.
But I just now (such is life) I accidentally stumbled upon the simple solution:
    1. Enter System Preferences and click Security & Privacy.
    2. Select the Privacy tab and then on Contacts on the left hand panel.
    3. In the right hand panel ("Allow the apps below to access your contacts") just tick the Contacts box.
    4. And Voilà! - at least it worked for me - hope it does for you.

  • Mail and address book data file location

Does anyone know where mail and address book saves its data?
My old mac died but I was able to remove the hard drive and mount it in a external firewire case. The drive mounts and appears in good shape. I tried using the migration utility to transfer my data into my new iMac. While a lot of data and applications did make the move, my mail files and folders did not show up on my new iMac. I'm hoping I can transfer the mail files manually. The problem is I can't find where they are located on my old computer. I was using Max os 10.4.11 on my old computer.
The same problem with my address book data. It did not transfer over with migration app. and I can't locate this data either.

The majority of Mail is in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    AB...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

  • How do you transfer ical data and address book from a mac back up to an ipad?

    I have a HD back-up from my mom's dead imac g5.
I am sending her an iPad, and would LOVE to have here Address Book and iCal data so she has that all set up.

If you want to transfer a large amount of files, the best way would be to use an external drive. If you do not have one, consider the option of using Target Disk mode, so you just have to get a Thunderbolt cable; this is the fastest option.
To use Target Disk mode, connect the Thunderbolt to the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro. Then, start up your MacBook Pro and hold the T key while it is starting up until you see the Thunderbolt icon in the display. Now, go to the MacBook Air, open a Finder window and you will see the MacBook Pro hard drive in the sidebar, so access to them and transfer the files you want to.

  • How do I prevent Address Book from importing undesired data from Mail

Hello, this is my first post here
I was wondering how could I stop Mail to complete or change my Address Book info or backwise: stop Address Book to get data from Mail.
The problem is that if I have a contact in Address Book called "mom" and her mail written there, and she emails me, her real name appears in that mail. Then what I had in Address Book ("mom") is overwrited by the mail app. info.
This is like living in **** because for this reason I can´t even sync my iphone with my Address Book because everything is meesed up.
I think that it is logical that what I write in my own Address Book has a higher rank than what people decide to do with their email info. It´s pure logic.
I want mail and address book to respect me!
    respect!

  • Lost address book, found file named AddressBook.data.previous

My address book is gone. I found AddressBook.data.previous in Application Support under my account, but I can't open it and can't drag it to the Application. Any help? Is this my missing data?
    Best to all.

With the Address Book application quit and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Application Support > AddressBook > AddressBook.data.previous.
If there is an Address Book.data file, move this to the Desktop. Change the name of AddressBook.data.previoius to AddressBook.data
Say a quick prayer of cross your fingers and launch Address Book.
If your contacts are not available, now is the time to start maintaining a backup or if you do, start including Address Book data with your backup which is quite easy.
As the menu bar, go to File and select Back Up Address Book. The default name for the backup file is Address Book - (and the date). A very easy process.
If you need to recover all contacts from this backup, at the menu bar go to File and select Revert to Address Book Backup selecting the backup file.
Before making a large number changes/edits, deletions or additions to existing data, update your backup file immediately beforehand.

  • My Address Book data has been deleted

Not sure what happened but the last thing I remember was hitting the command/save to save the editions to the Address Book list. All the addresses then disappeared.
How do I reload them back into the Address Book files?
I did follow several posted sites and did as others suggested but what happens is: I am not able to import from the Users, MyName, Application Support, Address Book files, Meta Data but in the end the files there are not highlighted and therefor I am not able to import. Any other advice?

Thank you to those who were going to reply. I have solved the problem thanks to a program I had added to my computer called TrashCashe. It saved all my files that I trashed earlier in the day.
May I suggest everyone get this program and set the preferences to several gigs in the memory setting and to extend the length of the saved files to at least a month.
