Address Book behaves very strange

Hello members and outside viewers,
First thing: My Address Book behaves very strange.
- After startup, the window freezes. Only if I minimize and click again, works OK. I began used to it, BUT
- Since yesterday, Addresses gone, disappeared from every entry.
- Under Preferences » Address Format is uneditable, it has "Item3" in it, unclickable drop down menu.
- Under Preferences »Template » Add Field several options are grey: "Phone", "Email", "Related Names", "Instant Messaging", "Address".
Please can you help me! I deleted both plist files from Preferences folder and deleted the whole folder under Application Support/AddressBook, also reinstalled Address Book from Leopard DVD, but nothing helped so far.
Second thing: when I invoke Spotlight, and start typing after 2-3 seconds, it quits and also Dock unusable, restarts automatically. Spotlight is useless, it behaves every time like this. Spotlight in Finder windows are OK, system-wide menubar has this error. Also, it was suddenly gone wrong like Address Book. Can I think of some virus?
P.S. (off topic), might helpful to share: very frustating, that registering to Discussions took me over an hour.
- With Safari 4.03 the "Name" and "AppleID" are blank fields on "Create New User Account", therefore impossible to proceed. ( Error: invalid AppleID. Please login with a different AppleID )
- With Firefox you can actually see them, but "?" instead of accounted letters.
- After changing My Info, I finally realised that Apple ID should be complete e-mail address.
- That means my "visionfresh" account is totally different from "[email protected]" (or me.com, whatever..)
- Not to mention that I created a new Apple ID, that was also not working.
- Bottom line: my "[email protected]" account is working also in Safari after editing my Name (replace accented characters), but I could not proceed with the nickname "visionfresh", I chose "matyashuszar".

  • MacBook Pro - Battery behaving very strangely

I have noticed there are already many threads on this, couldn't decide which one to post in so am starting a new one.
I have a MBP 2.33 C2D 17" from late 2006. Last year I experienced the 'expanding battery' problem, my battery totally warped out of shape and was not working properly. After a fair bit of trouble with Apple France (who basically said, too bad, buy a new one), I eventually was able to go above their heads and get Apple to send me a free replacement. This seemed fair seeing as I had bought my MBP within the timeframe of an official battery recall published on the Apple site. The new battery worked absolutely fine, and is now still less than a year old.
Recently though, it has started to behave very strangely. I hadn't made any connection that it could be to do with having upgraded to Snow Leopard, but in retrospect, after reading many of the threads here, it does seem likely that this is the case.. I recently did a big upgrade from Tiger to SL on this very machine, and it has been since then that I've had very erratic battery behaviour.
My symptoms are similar to many I've read here: The remaining battery time (when not connected to AC) will jump from say 3 hours down to 15 mins very suddenly. Then sometimes it will jump back up again. Sometimes my battery health condition will say 'replace now', other times 'replace soon' or other times 'normal'. Also, sometimes the machine will just go to sleep with no warning, even when it had estimated more than an hour of battery time left.. upon reconnection to AC, suddenly it says 0%.
I have always been careful to power cycle the battery properly, to let it run down regularly. Also since noticing this problem, the first thing I tried to do was recalibrate.. But I've tried twice now with no success. I let the machine run right down till it went to sleep, then left it on overnight, waiting for the power LED to stop flashing on the front of the machine.. But it wouldn't stop flashing even after being left off overnight. I have yet to try an SMC reset, will do that next.
I realize my battery is not brand new, nor is my computer. However, this was a replacement battery I received less than a year ago. I'll put the battery stats below, but I'm not sure I believe them because I've been checking what is says a lot recently and sometimes it even shows a full charge capacity of a negative number! Something strange is going on here. I obviously don't expect full performance from a battery nearly a year old, but what it's doing here seems to be more than just a case of a battery getting old, especially having seen that many other users are having a similar set of symptoms after going to Snow Leopard.

    Any suggestions appreciated..
    Cheers.

I just got off a call with Apple support. The tech agreed that my symptoms were not normal, even for a battery with a cycle count over 300 like mine.. especially with the fact that the system profiler is showing bizarre info that makes no sense such as a full charge of a negative number. He said that basically the only thing I can try is to do an archive and reinstall of Snow Leopard, since it seems that the operating system is possibly corrupted. I don't think it's anything to do with the physics of the battery, it is more likely that the OS is not interacting properly with the battery, thus giving false and conflicting readings and information.. He seemed quite certain that it can't be a problem with Snow Leopard itself, seeing as all of the laptops in the Apple Support office were on SL and did not have this problem. So in his opinion, a corrupted OS was the most likely explanation. In any case, he said that batteries are only covered by a 90 day guarantee, so if it turns out that after a reinstall, my problem doesn't go away, then I'll have no choice but to buy a new battery because they won't cover it... This doesn't seem very fair to me because if it turns out that the OS has nothing to do with it, then it must be a faulty battery, because this kind of behaviour is certainly not what I'd call acceptable for a battery of less than a year old.
Anyway, I'll perhaps try the archive and install process on the weekend and see what happens.

  • Trackpad began to behave very strangely

After installation Mac OS X v10.7 Lion on my MacBook Air trackpad began to behave very strangely. I just moving the pointer but it's clicking during the movings (closing windows, tapping links etc).
    So, how to fix it?

48 hours ago, I installed Lion on my Macbook purchased in the spring of 2009.  Everything seemed normal, until I went to type.  Regardless if it was in Facebook to reply to a thread, Text Edit, Mac Mail, my cursor would erratically act possessed, cursor appearing in the middle of a blue highlighted portion of what I had just typed.  I was cursing my Macbook, wondering what on earth was wrong!
I should state that when I installed Lion, it was from Leopard.  I erased Leopard entirely from my hard drive from the Lion disk utility.  I did my updates.  Called Apple Tech Support today, ended up with a supervisor.  Both people I spoke to were terrific.  During this phone call, I was advised to reinstall Lion without erasing it from my hard drive.  Just to reinstall over the top of what was already on my hard drive.  Did this, and to my surprise two software updates arose for Airport Utility and iTunes!!  Did those updates.  It didn't require a reboot.
I still had erratic-possessed cursor problems.  At this point, I went to my iMac desktop, unplugged my new keyboard, and plugged the usb keyboard into my Macbook.  This worked beautifully.  At this point the lightbulb turned on.  With the wired usb keyboard plugged in, I shut down my Macbook.  I unplugged the USB keyboard, and rebooted my Macbook.  My Macbook keyboard, cursor, trackpad are now cooperating in the manner in which they should be.
I can only suggest to reinstall Lion, without reformatting your hard drive.  Check for updates.  Reboot.  Try my external USB keyboard suggestion.  GOOD LUCK!

  • Address Book is very very slow and mixes up data

Address Book has been mixing up addresses. Many contacts have phone numbers and email addresses from other contacts. It's also become very, very slow. For example, making any change brings on about 30 to 60 seconds of the spinning ball.
How do I fix it? What's going on with this thing?

    You are not alone..
I am getting random contacts with the phone number repeating over 60 times. Deleting them is painfully slow.

  • Address book working very slowly

I just installed Snow Leopard and first thing I noticed was how long it took to load up my address book.
I use me.com to sync my contacts
when I open the address book app my laptop makes a lot of noise like it's trying to read the hard drive and it takes forever to load it up.
i also noticed Spotlight seems to be re-indexing the computer. Could this be why things are moving slowly? It's no longer re-indexing but the address book is still super slow. I have tried restarting the laptop many times.
What's happening...? Can I delete the address file and re-syncs it? Will that help?

Try to delete any smart folder if you got any, it worked for me.

  • My address book is very slow

my mail.app is terribly slow in completing addresses. Now I found solutions (like throwing away the local address book here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19058957#19058957) in old threads, but the location for all the stuff has apparently changed.
I do not *have* /Users/<your_name>/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. Anyone know where it went?

To get to the "hidden" Library do this...
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".

  • Firefox 25.0.1 behaving very strangely on OS/X 10.9

I am using Firefox 25.0.1 to develop PHP code using MAMP locally within a Mac running OS/X 10.9.
When I fetch a page with a correct URL like
    http://localhost:8888/site?taskID=7
all my PHP code executes nicely and I see exactly the page I expect in Firefox.
However, simultaneously, the PHP code also seems to be responding to another fetch, with a shortened URL like
    http: //localhost:8888/site
(without the ?taskID=7). Code I put into the PHP to echo text to the screen always appears on the screen from the correct-URL version, and never from the shortened-URL version. However, I can see updates into my database from the PHP code which can only be occurring if both fetches are being performed. I have had the PHP code write $_SERVER[REQUEST_URI] into a database field. I see one entry from 'site' and one entry from 'site?taskID=7' every time I request the page.
I have, on the same machine, accessing the same URL in the same instance of MAMP, a copy of Chrome. When I access the same URL from Chrome, I just see the correct URL being fetched, not the shortened URL.
I see today another question about Firefox 25, OS/X and custom fonts crashing. I am using custom fonts. However, when I took the custom fonts out, I still get this weird behaviour of two fetches for each page refresh, one with the shortened URL.
This seems to be a new behaviour today. I installed 25.0.1 yesterday.

    I have two guesses.
    (1) If your page or style sheet contains a blank src or url(), then Firefox may interpret that to be a relative URL with the base address of the page, and request the page again. This would be most consistent with your description of the second request omitting the query string, but I can't think of any reason for it to suddenly occur after an upgrade.
    (2) Another reason that Firefox might repeat a request arises when the character encoding is not specified in the response headers or at the beginning of the page. In that case, Firefox will interpret the response using the user's default encoding. If due to a meta tag in the page Firefox later determines that it was applying the wrong encoding, it will re-request the page. This is not a new issue, but perhaps something in the update changed your default encoding so you are experiencing this for the first time. On the other hand, the modified URL is more consistent with problem #1.

  • Exchange Sync Problem: Address Book fields are strange

    Hi All,
I started to use Mail and Address Box to sync to my company Exchange 2007 since I upgraded to SL. Everything worked fine except that the inbox of the mail can never show up. Anyway, I assumed everything else work just fine.
However, when I decided not to sync with Exchange anymore and use other services to sync my macbook and iphone, I discovered that there is a big bug in the exchange sync mechanism. All the details of the contact actually sync into arbitrary field names. They look similar and that's why I though it works just fine.
Now the fields look like this in my iphone and mobile me _$!<EX-BusinessPhone>!$_
    Can anyone help?

I have a similar question -- seems all the fields that iPhone does utilize are transferred -- but it is limited and apparently not customizable. For example .. if someone has an "other" email address it doesn't show up ... only work and home seem to show up.... would really like to be able to customize which fields I want to carry with me

  • [SOLVED] Broadcom wireless card behaving very strangely

My wireless card has become unusable in an obscure fashion after a reboot. It may have been due to the recent kernel update, but I rebooted once after that update and the card was fine, so I'm not sure. Wireless was working without a hitch for months before this.

If I try to use wpa-supplicant, it will say "Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant" as if it had properly made a connection, but it hasn't. Running iw dev wlp3s0 link will show that the card isn't connected to anything, and of course the internet still doesn't work.
I know it's not a hardware problem because the wireless works fine in Mac OS.
What gives? Is there a way I can investigate this further? It seems like a driver and/or kernel issue but I'm not really sure how to nail that down with confidence. I couldn't find any reports in the kernel bug tracker about this or anything, so maybe it's just me and I'm doing something wrong.
    Thanks!

    Yay, that worked!
I guess I really should've tried that initially, huh? Since the wiki said not to use it unless you had an unsupported wireless card, I figured I shouldn't (b43 officially supports mine). Still, considering that it's easy to install/uninstall drivers, my caution was obviously unwarranted.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Scaling behaving very strangely with 4K footage in a 1080 sequence

I have brought some 4K footage (4096 x 2160, ProRes 4444) into a new project and placed it in a new 1920 x 1080 sequence. "Default scale to frame size" is unchecked. I elect to "Keep existing settings". As expected, footage comes in a 100% so I'm just seeing the center of the frame. Playback is normal. As I scale down, I can see more of the frame - great.
When I scale below 50% however, things get weird. As I'm scaling down (by dragging the mouse) and cross below 50%, the image in the Program window suddenly jumps back to what appears to be 100% and continues scaling down from there. When I let go of the mouse, it jumps back to what appears to be the correct scale. But things get weirder when I press play. The image in the window doubles in size. I have created a video to show you what I'm seeing.
    • My Zoom Level is 100%
    • This happens regardless of whether or not I use "Default scale to frame size".
    • This happens regardless of what Playback Resolution or Paused Resolution I use.
    • This happens whether or not I have Program on a second display.
    • This happens no matter what I've tried to do differently so far.
    Please advise. Thanks

    Hi Drking2020,
I see you have seen this forum post: Re: 4k Playback in 1080p Sequence - Zoom out in 1/2 resolution
Try those things that Mark Mapes mentioned, such as changing the playback resolution.

  • Help! Ipod touch behaving very strangely

Ok so basically I was using my Ipod a few days ago and it was fine, no problems at all, I leave it for a few hours come back and it's not working. It's not switching on or off, I've tried resetting it by holding the home and sleep button, but no response. I've tried restoring it with my laptop, but again no response, only the apple logo keeps flashing on then off every few seconds. Anyone got any ideas? This has never happened before btw, any help would be appreciated!

    Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If not usccessful and the iPod screen continues to cycle on and of, on and off then let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try the article again if you are getting a different screen response. If same screen response then time for an appointment at the Genious Bar of an Apple store.

  • ITunes behaving very strangely

Seems every time i click on a song i get a message telling mne the original file could not be found.Would i like to locate itU

    Sorry, had to start again
Seems every time i click on a song i get a message telling mne the original file could not be found.Would i like to locate it.A choose file window comes up,On the left column pressing the music icon produces three folders - Garage, iTunes and Music folders.
Disregarding Garage , I click on iTunes and I get the following list-Album artwork(folder), iPod (Games), iTunes Library( a 856KB file which produces no music),iTunes Library xtras.itdb ( 212kb file),iTunes Library Genius.itdb ( 7.7mb file),iTunes Music (folder with nothing in it),iTunes Music Library .xml( document) , one single song I recently purchased, Previous Libaries (3 files with nothing in them) and Unknown Artist ( with one song).
Next i click on Music and iTunes appears again this time with a short list of songs, about 22 in all, some of which correspond to the relevant song in my iTunes library but others do not. Below the list again I have Album artwork, iTunes library, iTunes `Music,iTunes music Library xml and Previous libraries.
Only upon pressing iTunes music in this location do I get my whole list of down loaded and ripped from cd music and its from there that I can play them.Oddly once I play them once I can continue to play them as before but only those particular songs.Obviously having to play every single song so that I can access them as before isnt an option as I have so many.
Has any one got any ideas hoiw I might get iTunes to work normally again? Thanks!

  • Mail prefs behaving very strangely

after a crash, i was trying to change some settings (signature), and noticed that mail's preferences is completely missing the normal tabs for "general", "junk", etc., and only shows the "accounts" tab, so i can poke around with the two accounts, but i can't get to any of the other panes.
i have tried trashing the mail prefs file, but it didn't help, and i tried setting up a new admin account. neither one fixed the problem.
it's almost as if the other panes of mail's prefs have been trashed or mangled. where do they live, or how can i resurrect them, or what else can i try?

    BDAqua,
In Mail 3.x, the Preference panel does not have the oval (some panels do), and therefore you must click on View, and then choose Show Toolbar (which has become hidden). So if the person on whose behalf the original poster is checking is using Leopard, then using the View/Show Toolbar may be the only route.

  • Address Book, Spotlight ERRORS!

    Hello members and outside viewers,
These are software related issues, but I think of might be Mac Pro specific. I migrated everything from a G5 some time ago, but these issues occured in the near past.
First: My Address Book behaves very strange.
After startup, the window freezes. Only if I minimize and click again, works OK. I began used to it, BUT
Since yesterday, Addresses gone, disappeared from every entry.
Under Preferences » Address Format is uneditable, it has "Item3" in it, unclickable drop down menu.
Under Preferences »Template » Add Field several options are grey: "Phone", "Email", "Related Names", "Instant Messaging", "Address".
With Safari 4.03 the "Name" and "AppleID" are blank fields on "Create New User Account", therefore impossible to proceed. ( Error: invalid AppleID. Please login with a different AppleID )
With Firefox you can actually see them, but "?" instead of accounted letters.
After changing My Info, I finally realised that Apple ID should be complete e-mail address.
That means my "visionfresh" account is totally different from "[email protected]" (or me.com, whatever..)
Not to mention that I created a new Apple ID, that was also not working.
Bottom line: my "[email protected]" account is working also in Safari after editing my Name (replace accented characters), but I could not proceed with the nickname "visionfresh", I chose "matyashuszar".

  • Address Book: Importing vcards with embedded photos

    Hi folks,
This question would perhaps be more at home in the Apple Developer Connection Forums, but as I can't access those without a paid ADC account, I thought I'd try here on the off chance someone knows.
In short, I'm writing an application that does clever things with vcards, and it would be great if it could export them to Address Book.
That in itself is simple, but I'd also like to embed a photograph in each vcard. So, I'm successfully encoding the image into a base64 string (tested), and other applications like Entourage will happily open and see the image, but Address Book won't.
After much Google-ing I've learned that apparently Address Book expects very specific formatting (and possibly whitespace) in and around the base64 string, which is all well and good, except no one seems to know what that formatting is!
I've looked in the ADC Reference Library but it doesn't go into enough detail.
So, is there anyone who happens to know how to format a base64 string for Address Book?
EDIT: I am aware that Address Book doesn't require the string to be wrapped, and I have tried not wrapping my base64 string and if I do that then my vcards will successfully import with their photos (Entourage seems happy with unwrapped strings too).
However, this is not an ideal solution as other vcard applications may not be so accepting, and I don't believe vcards can have multiple photo fields.

Thanks, but right now I can't afford the $500 I'd have to spend in order to buy the sufficient level of ADC membership to use the developer forums. I just thought I'd ask here on the off chance, as I know there are sometimes a few developers lurking around.
Having said that, after reading posts such as this: http://markmail.org/message/5dbslpeyhjcjxug4
I'm beginning to think there are only a handful of people who know the answer, so I may have to give up and use a work-around.
