Address Book Closes Itself

Can't uncheck Synchronize with Google without Address Book crashing. Everytime I uncheck it, address book crashes.

  • Why won't address book close (or sync with ipod)

When I open address book to edit or add contacts, it will not close. The spinning wheel appears and then I have to force quit. I have also found that my ipod video will no longer sync with address book. It asks me to open the contact list whenever I try.
I tried deleting all my cards and reentering the information, but that has not helped. There is something wrong with the address app itself.
I used to have a palm device set up, but I have removed it and all palm files.

    You are right theldje
BUT...This is no the way that is supposed to work.
I have to modify 300+ years! and it took me 5 min to convince AddressBook that I write fast enough to change the year
Besides, this is Apple. It's supposed to be user friendly.
I hope this people comes with an answer soon!
At any rate thank you for sharing your findings!
    Cheers!

"or higher" doesn't necessaily mean it's compatible with the v10.7.

  • Lost all my contacts in my address book

I am running 10.2.8 All my contacts just disappeared from my address book (no crash or anything unusual). Can anyone give me advice on how to get them back? Or if it is possible. Thank you for any help.

    BuckisCool:
Yes, as you are running Leopard you can bring it back using Time Machine. You can check out either in the forum links below. You can bookmark the first one for future reference.

    jfsac:
I can't remember the 10.2 nature of AddressBook, but hoping it is similar to 10.3, have a look in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
where you should see a file called AddressBook.data. With any luck there should also be AddressBook.beforesave or AddressBook.previous.
Just to be safe first of all, select the whole folder AddressBook, and copy it and paste it to some other location, say in your Home directory and rename it AddressBookCopy.
If you do have an AddressBook.previous, then opening the Address Book application itself, does 10.2.8 give you the option under File of Revert to Database Backup?
    If it does try that.
    If that option is not there, then close the AddressBook Application and then back in your Finder at the AddressBook files location, assuming you have AddressBook.previous sitting there, then;
    1. change the name of AddressBook.data to AddressBook.dataOLD
    2. then change the name of AddressBook.previous to AddressBook.data
Open up AddressBook and see if your contacts have been restored. I hope this allows you to get your contacts back.

  • How can I delete ALL of my Address Book entries and start fresh?

Yes. I know that sounds extreme, but……
I use Outlook on a PC at my office, and I have an sbcglobal/Yahoo mail account. I look upon my office Outlook as my ultimate contacts list (over 1,100 entries) and my calendar.
I use the sbc supplied free Intellisync software to sync all of my calendar and contacts from my office PC into sbc/Yahoo. That way I actually get e-mail reminders of appointments, etc. in addition to my Outlook notifications. It is actually pretty nifty.
I have also successfully signed-on to my Yahoo account at home on my MAC and exported all of my contacts from Yahoo (which had been populated by the PC Outlook listings via Intellisync) onto my desktop and then imported them into Address Book. But I did that some time ago and now my Outlook listings have been updated rather substantially. I would like to able to do a complete re-install of the new and improved contacts from the Yahoo repository.
Again - I certainly do not want to delete the Address Book app itself – I just want to start with a clean slate so there are no conflicts or duplicate entries (which in fact is seemingly a bug in the Yahoo/Intellisync. Is there a way to completely wipe clean all of my Address Book entries?
    Thanks

    Hello Allan -
Your help on a previous post was great re: my wanting to know how to delete the Address Book contents so I can re-import an updated list form my office Outlook, via my yahho/sbcglobal import.
Well - here is an interesting quandary:
I have successfully exported my yahoo address book/contacts as a .vcf file Yet - once I have expunged the prior Address Book data and want to now import the NEW Yahoo data to rebuild the database it only takes (enters) the phone numbers and does NOT import ANY of the address information. I am positive I did this once since our original exchange and everything transferred just fine, but now….?!
What I cannot determine is where the fault may be: does the export NOT include the addresses (in which case I am doing something fundamentally stupid wit the export) or the vcf cards are complete, but Address Book is not “seeing” anything other than the phone #s and e-mail addresses.
    Any thoughts?

  • Sharing certain groups in address book rather than the whole address book

    Hi
I haven't got server yet in our office but we are looking to do this. Currently we just share calendars and other bits and pieces but I'm looking to get server in place. Sharing the address book requires giving a user our iCloud password and letting them look at the address book as a whole. We really only want to share certain phone numbers like our company staff phone numbers rather than our financial clients and other sensitive contacts.
Is it possible to only allow a "user" to access certain, or 1 group in address book rather than the whole address book library itself by using osx server
    Many thanks

    Hi Jaime,
I just wanted to jump in here with a quick question... on Mac OS X Server my understanding was that with the open directory, you can't designate organizational groups for the ldap service. Without that ability, how are you limiting what ldap users can see?
In our setup, our LDAP settings would be similar to
    cn=users,dc=example,dc=com
What format would you use to say show only members of the group "examplegroup"?
    Thanks!

  • Address Book flipped last and first names and won't flip back

Has anyone encountered where after syncing Address Book with Exchange, the first and last names have been flipped and cannot be flipped back? No matter what I do in my Preferences, I can't seem to stop having the address card show the last name first and the first name last. I've tried adjusting the "Sort By" and "Display Order" in multiple configurations and just can't seem to get it back the way it was with First Name then Last Name displayed and sorted by Last Name. Even when I look at the "Template" I see the First Name first and the Last Name second but neither the card nor the list window shows it that way.
Has anyone else seen this? Were you able to restore control to how you view this?
    Thanks
    JimN

no responses but I discovered that if I change the sort feature a few times, Address Book corrects itself. Wonderful feature.

  • Address Book Contact List Separator/Header

    Hello all,
This one is a bit hard to explain but I will give it a shot.
When logged into my mobile me account, my contacts list is split into smaller lists by a letter separator/header. For example, everybody with a last name that starts with "A" is in the "A" section. Everybody that has a last name that starts with the letter "B" is in the "B" section. Etc, etc...
Is there any way to get that separation in the Address Book application itself? It is very handy in finding someone in the middle of my address book but looks to be only available on the mobile me website maybe?
    Thanks!
    Ian

You could I suppose make Address Book groups, one for each letter of the alphabet, and put your contacts into the appropriate groups. However, if I am looking for someone in Address Book I find it simplest to just start typing their name in the search box.

  • Address Book opens when a script is opened, while script editor was closed

    Hi,
    Something puzzles me :
I have a very simple script with only these two lines :
    tell application "Address Book"
    end tell
This script is saved as a simple script.
When I open the script with script editor,
    * if script editor was already open, the script opens normally and I can edit it
    * if script editor was not already open, then Address Book opens itself (and the script opens itself with script editor)
What explains the opening of Address Book ?
What can I do to avoid this auto-opening of Address Book ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Nicolas

You were right, the script will not compile. (there are some instruction between the "tell" and the "end tell" lines)
There are a couple of solutions to that one.
The first is that the script will compile if you're only using standard commands like 'activate', 'quit', etc. inside the tell block - these commands are universal, supported by all applications, and therefore you don't need the application dictionary.
If you are using application-specific commands, though, then you can provide the Script Editor a hint as to which dictionary to use via the using terms from command.
This tells the compiler which application dictionary to use when compiling the script, but it shouldn't affect opening the script. If you're only targeting one application and don't mind this workaround, it could be your solution:
    -- here's our target application
    set appName to "Address Book"
     -- let's target it
    tell application appName
-- now provide the compiler a hint as to which application dictionary to use
using terms from application "Address Book"
        -- commands go here
      end using terms from
    end tell
When it comes to compile the script, AppleScript will use the application in the using terms from statement instead of the (unknown) application in the tell statement.

  • Address Book - self signed LDAPS certifiate on openldap server

I'm fairly new to the Mac, but I'm not new to FreeBSD or *NIX type boxes.
I'm trying to get Address Book to contact my openldap server that runs on OpenBSD. I have it working well with thunderbird, horde + (l)imp, dovecot, and various other openldap client based pieces of software. I use a self signed certificate on the server as most do. The key with the openldap client libraries normally is changing /etc/openldap/ldap.conf to not require a valid certificate from the server with the following setting:
    TLS_REQCERT never
This setting is present in my version of OS X by default. On other *NIX machines i've had to set that manually.
If there is any chrooting involved by the client, clearly another copy of /etc/openldap/ldap.conf is necessary in the chrooted area. Does anyone know if Address Book chroots itself? Or why it isn't paying attention to the /etc/openldap/ldap.conf? I get a clear message on the server that the client is rejecting the self signed certificate.
    Thanks much for your time,
    Geff

Where's the button for "Yes, I answered my own question." ???? Okay ... <rant on> I guess Apple is no different from everything else: openbsd, linux, windows, open source, closed source, etc. always answering our own questions. I feel like the software isn't even tested. A FIX or some more information would be nice. </rant off>
Okay here's the deal. I don't have a cert signed by an approved CA so I'm not sure if one would have to jump through fewer hoops to get it to work with a "proper" (non-self signed) cert. Turns out if you are using AddressBook to attempt to go to an LDAP server and you want SSL with a self signed cert, it seems that AddressBook won't properly attach to the LDAP server on port 636. Even tho that's what happens to the PORT setting when you CLICK THE BUTTON (bitter, am I ranting again? ). So what you do is click the button for "SSL" and then REVERT THE PORT back MANUALLY to 389. (more bitter) This causes addressbook to ... well ... uhm ... WORK. What ends up happening is that it makes a non-ssl connection initially and then upgrades the connection via "STARTTLS" to an encrypted connection. There one setting that you should have in slapd.conf (or like file) before doing this.
    # Sample security restrictions
    # Require integrity protection (prevent hijacking)
    # Require 112-bit (3DES or better) encryption for updates
    # Require 63-bit encryption for simple bind
    # security ssf=1 update_ssf=112 simple_bind=64
    security simple_bind=64
This requires the connection to have at least the minimum amount of encryption before the bind (authenticate) process. Keep in mind if you add this setting, anything that previously attempted to bind clear text (even on localhost) will fail. However you should never be sending a password in the clear.

  • ADDRESS BOOK OPENS IN BACKGROUND WHEN DASHBOARD OPENS

When I open Dashboard from the dock, it also opens my Address Book in the background. When I close Dashboard, the Address book closes. Does anyone know why and how to correct this?

Well guys, by listing the widgets I have, I figured out that I have the Address Book widget in dashboard. So, obviously, that's why it was opening Address Book when I pulled up Dashboard. Duh......
At least your request made me think Thanks for your time.....have a good day!

  • Imported Address Book not linking - when typing, results are red

    OS - Windows Vista
    Thunderbird Version 24.6.6
Issue: Address book was imported into Mozilla from Windows Live Mail 2006. When trying to send an email, even though the contacts are listed in the address book, when typing them out in a new email, they are still flashing up in red.
Troubleshooting performed: Composed new mail, typed out email manually - this added to address book. There were four copies of the address book listed, deleted the duplicates and migrated the addresses from the imported book to Personal Address Book. Still not working. Opened Address book and selected contact, attempted to compose mail to selected contact, failed. Checked Address Book entries - found that the entries didn't import properly into the following fields:
First, Last, Email - rather they got imported as Display Name, Nickname (with nickname being the email address)
Solution: Went into each contact, and modified them by moving the 'nickname' (which contained the email address) to the 'email address' field. Now able to send emails through to the contact.
    Questions:
    1) When importing the Address from Windows Live Mail - how can we stop it from importing/mapping the email address field into the nickname field?
    2) Is there a faster way to update all the contacts to copy across from Nickname field to the Email field?
    Thanks,
    Angela

If you import via CSV fie, you should be shown a dialog that asks you to re-sort address book fields so the fields in the imported address book correspond with those in Thunderbird's Address Book.
    Did this not happen?
See "From somewhere else to Thunderbird:" here:
    http://www.ramsden.org.uk/11_Thunderbird_Settings_and_the_Profile.html
I don't know of any easy way to work directly with the address book file itself; it's not organized in a user-friendly manner internally. These matters are usually best addressed either before importing (i.e. tweak the CSV file in a spreadsheet program) or via the import dialog.
Alternative formats such as vcf or vCard may avoid the need to massage the data, but IMHO are less suited to managing address books. If you can use these formats, this add-on can be useful:

  • Mac address book & (Address book software-not MAc)

I am new to MAC and downloaded a software program called Address office. The program is basically a name and address file; it is in addition to the address book in mac.
The address book in mac came with 1 address and that is apple.com. The problem I have been having is that the "apple.com" duplicates itself in the MAC address book by itself. It multiplies by itself or if you have address book open and click on the desktop, the address will duplicate. There are sometimes 50 entries of apple.com. The mac genius bar thinks it is because of the other address book that I downloaded. They replaced my MAC because they could not fix the problem and the new one appeared to work fine until. I copied the "address office" software to a cd, I inserted the CD into the Mac and was going to print all of the address so I would have them; I did not install the software on the hard drive. Right after doing this, the MAC address book started to have the same problem...apple.com suddenly appeared and started to duplicate itself so I am back to sqare one. Any help or direction as to what should be done is much appreciated
    Thanks

Good luck with them. It really sounds like a "Doctor, it hurts when I do this…" problem for you. That program seems awfully old given that it was originally written to support 10.0 to 10.2 and release in 2003. Lots of stuff with address book changed dramatically since then.

  • Address book opens and closes by itself

When I'm happily working away on my macbook pro, the address book will open automatically, for about 2 seconds, then close automatically. It usually opens my contact card, but occasionally others as well.
Is anyone else having this issue, and/or can someone explain why this is happening, or how to correct this annoying 'problem'?
I thought it might be a virus, so I purchased Intego VirusBarrier X4.
I'm running bootcamp with XP SP2 and McAffee antivirus.
The system is clean, at least according to both antiviral software.

You probably have a piece of software such as a Dashboard widget, or a plug-in, or a system utility, or something like that, that requires Address Book to be running for whatever it does.
