Address Book Contacts and Groups Randomly Disappear

I have been having an odd problem with my Address Book lately. From time to time when I open Address Book, all of the groups will have disappeared, except for the smart groups. After I go through and recreate all of my groups, I can close the application and reopen it without having lost them, but then a few weeks or months later they'll be gone again.
Today I had an even stranger problem. I was filling in the birthday field for several existing cards and in the middle of typing, almost all of my contacts disappeared. The only ones left were the ones that I had just created yesterday. Fortunately, I had backed up my database yesterday, but this seems like a serious problem.
I share my address book with my wife via .Mac. I'm not sure if that affects anything, although my computer does seem to spend a lot of time syncing whenever I have Address Book open.
I don't think this is a problem of low disk space as I still have over 11 GB left on my hard drive.

I have been having the same problem. Contacts will disappear randomly. It is very frustrating especially when you go to write an email and realize that mail no longer has an email address for someone and you know that you have to input all of their info again.
I wish Apple would figure this problem out.

  • Address Book Contacts and Mail Previous Recipients Missing/Empty/Deleted

At one point yesterday, I was happily catching up on some email using Mail. All was well. I toggled a message as Junk and went to forward it to [email protected], which was, of course, in my Previous Recipients list. Only this time it wasn't. I noticed, too, in iChat, that all of my buddies had reverted to their IM screen names from their normal Address Book-based First Name/Last Name. So I opened Address Book (which had not been running), and it was empty!
To the best of my recollection, though I have a .Mac account, there was no syncing that occurred during any of this. Worse, when I did a manual Sync to see if .Mac would restore my contacts, it didn't. My Address Book remained empty. Fortunately, it didn't propagate its emptiness to .Mac, which I checked via the Web.
When I fired up my spare iBook, everything seemed fine, and a sync there didn't blow away anything.
I found a few posts that recommended replacing my now empty AddressBook.data file with AddressBook.data.beforesave, which was large enough to seem like it might still have a lot of my contacts. I did this, and my Address Book and Previous Recipients were partially restored. The only problem is that the beforesave file was dated June 2004 and is missing all contact information over the past year and a half.
What the heck happened?! Is there any better solution out there? Any thoughts on why .Mac wasn't able to restore the file? Also, what does Previous Recipients have to do with the Address Book data files?

Is your iBook the way you want it? all of your addresses? if so maybe you could back up that database and replace the old one thats fallen to pieces. If you try that though theres no real chance I think of rebuilding that old one as far as I know. My entouage database was an all in one type of deal. when it fell apart, you lost everything. I went to the mac mail and address book after that. everything is in seperate folders with that stuff. usually I've only seen this on older running installs of OS X. Like there is a bunch of directory probs. then things gradually get goofier over time.
Thats strange it doesn't want to import contacts to your computer.
    I'll ask around

  • Address Book names and groups are gone - forever?

    Hmmm.
After I added two names to Address Book from a message header in Mail, I noticed a duplicate name and selected the menu item to merge the two "cards."
Boom, as teh steve would say, several groups and over a hundred names are gone, now.
Only two names remain—the name I was adding and the duplicate name I was merging
(the one with the wrong spelling, ironically).
No undo was available. Nothing appeared in the trash. No, "Are you sure?" No warning messages about the change having no recourse, etc.
I've already had 2 very stiff drinks (I'm over 21 and do not intend to drive and feel otherwise socially responsible and do not condone irresponsible behaviour, etc., etc., etc.)
Any ideas about recovering any data would be REALLY helpful. Thank you.
I notice there's a way to back up the Address Book data. Gee, that's really nice to know, now.
Edit: OS is 10.4.11 with this problem

Sorry Stan... have you rebooted yet?
Look & see if you have a file like this...
    Address Book - 7:31:08.abbu
    Date will be different.
In finder go to /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
see if there are any files like this in it...
    AddressBook.data
    Images
    AddressBook.data.previous
    ABPerson.skIndexInverted
    .import.lockN
    .skIndex.ABPerson.lockN
    .database.lockN
    AddressBook.data.beforesave
    ABPerson.skIndex
    LastImport.plist
If it's really gone, quit using the computer if you wish a chance to recover it.

  • Lost address book contacts and restore?

    Hi All,
I know it has been discussed a while ago, but I have lost all my contact details by overnight. Luckily I have .mac account (now mobileme) and all the address synched with my previous address book items is there. The question is how I can restore it from mobileme.
    Thanks: Szimi

How could I recover address book's contact info
There are two possibilities. If you have a backup of your Address Book (AddressBook.abbu file), you can use the File > Revert to Address Book Backup menu option to restore your contacts. If you don't have a backup, you need to get in the habit of always making a backup when you make any change to your Address Book.
The second possibility is to enable the Debug menu in Address Book using this Terminal command (Address Book must not be running when you do this):
defaults write com.apple.AddressBook ABShowDebugMenu -bool True
then press Enter, then quit Terminal.
Start Address Book, go to the Debug menu and choose "Revert from MetaData" and wait to see what happens. With any luck, your contacts will be restored, after which you should make an immediate backup. If they are not restored, that means all the data was lost and you will need to restore from MobileMe, which is a question for their forums.

  • Lost all my Address Book Contacts and now can't locate Backup

Strange, well today- now all my contacts dissappear for no reason...
only shows 3 newest one.... What happen to the other 200 names that I had.
I know I use Backup3 to my iDisk everyday, so I try to restore from a few days back and now it says "Can't Locate backup", gives me 3 choices to do "Locate",
"Skip this Part" or Stop Restore. Nothing works for me.
I even change the AddressBook.data.beforesave to AddressBook.data, now it shows most of the contacts, but still lost about 20 names...

  • Delete Address Book Contacts and Start New Synchronization

Yesterday, I discovered that my address has not properly synchronized.
How do I delete the content of the dotmac account so that I can have a clean start, please?

  • Disappearing Address Book Contacts

This is a duplicate or my response to another similar problem, but I think this problem should have it's own topic.
My Address book contacts have been occasionaly disappearing, I would open Address book and all my contacts would be gone except for the "Apple" and "Me". And I would end up restoring from a backup, which I been doing fequently when this problem first started.
Recently I discovered what the problem is. I have an external drive connected and somehow my Address book contacts have defaulted to being stored on the external drive in a folder I had created for some temporary work some time ago. When I noticed it was still there (some time later) I trashed it.
It took a while for me to make the connection that when I deleted the folder, the address contacts would be gone. Because I wouldn't use my Address Book for days or maybe weeks afterwards
I finally realized that this "temporary" folder kept mysteriously reappearing, so when I checked, it contained the same folder structure as the <user>/library/application support/Address Book/ and sure enough that is where my address book is storing my contacts.
This has me baffled, there are no preference settings to even change the default storage location (or I couldn't find them) Looking at com.apple.addressbook.plist has no storage folder either.
Any ideas on how this can be corrected? Or even how it happened?
Little more information. This is my primary user account which has FileVault turned on and also syncs with dotmac to my MacBook. The sync works fine by the way, but those contacts should be within the secure volume.
My only thought for a fix would be to back up my user folder (data only, no settings). Delete the account. And then recreate the account and restore my data, but I'd rather not do that if I don't have to, I'm hoping for the quick and simple fix.
    What do yo think?

    Replying to my own post.
I think I've fixed my problem by simply disconnecting the external drive. With the drive disconnected, Address Book came up empty again. So I restored from my backup and checked that the files updated in the correct (home) folder.
    <user>/Library/Application Support/Address Book/
Still haven't any clue as to how my contacts suddenly started saving themselves on my external drive to begin with.

  • Cannot Synch Address Book Contacts from Mac OS to iPod

I have current software, and a video ipod. I am unable to synch my contacts. When I try, the message is that I have not created any contacts in my address book and would I like to create some now....I do have Address Book contacts and cannot find an answer relating to using a MAC OS system (10.4.9) - they all seem to relate to windows problems. Everything else on my ipod synchs just fine.
Please someone out there - any help?

the easiest is to open AB on G3, select all contacts and drag them to the desktop. that will create one big vcard with all contacts. move it to the mac book and drop it onto AB there.

  • My address book contacts keep disappearing and I haven't upgraded only updated.  Any ideas?

My address book contacts disappear from the address book application, but when I check the library the files seem to be there.  If I click on one of the files that should contain contact info, they are blank.  I've restored the files twice from my time capsule and it works for awhile and then suddenly they seem to be missing again.  I haven't upgraded to OS X, so the online support on address book does not help.  I've only been maintaining the automatic updates.  Any thoughts on my magically disappearing contacts?  It makes synching my ipod a dangerous act.

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.
I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting  citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in  the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US  Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will  interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do  not want that either.
I  chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have  relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can  no longer do that.
Whoever  made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about  the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by  this.
I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.
In the meantime - thanks for the work around

  • Address Book Contacts Disappeared with new App Installation

Hello! I would LOVE anyone who can help me resolve this issue!
Yesterday, thinking it was smart to have another place where all my contacts would be backed up, I downloaded the Plaxo App for Blackberry. After following the installation instructions the application synced with my blackberry curve, and then I pulled up my address book to call someone I realized ALL MY CONTACTS WERE GONE.
They were backed up in the application still, but if I wanted to call or text anyone the number was gone. Any incoming calls show up as random numbers not saved in my phone book as well.
The random thing now is that when I receive a call, the number just shows us the normal xxx-xxx-xxxx format without a name. But in my call history a "name" appears from my contacts. It seems they are still somewhere in my phone's operating system, but maybe the app was corrupted and now the path is gone?
Any help is appreciated!!!!! I already tried the Plaxo support directly and they told me to uninstall the application, which I did - which did not make my address book reappear.
    Desperately yours,
    Ashley

    You’re welcome.
All you have to do is copy those files & folders from the backup to the location where they should be, replacing any files with the same name that may currently be there. Your home folder is /Users/username/. And you must first quit any applications that may access those files.
Things are more involved if you do any kind of synchronization, though. Actually that could be the reason your contacts disappeared in the first place. In that case, the procedure would be as follows:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Address Book data is enabled either in Address Book > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. You may also need to reset the entire sync history (iSync > Preferences > Reset Sync History) to avoid synchronization issues if you use .Mac or iSync to synchronize your Address Book with other computers or devices.
    3. Quit Address Book, Mail, and any other applications that might use Address Book for something. Or just quit all applications to be on the safe side.
    4. In the Finder, copy the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist preferences file and the ~/Library/Application Support/AddresBook folder from the backup to the corresponding location within your home folder, replacing the files with the same name currently there. Alternatively, to avoid accidentally overwriting any files, you may first move to the Desktop the files that should be replaced and trash them after checking that everything is OK.
    5. If your data has been successfully restored and .Mac synchronization of Address Book data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Address Book data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.

  • My Address Book has been emptied of addresses, both personal and group. How can I get them back? Is it because of the IDN update?

When I go in address book, then on either or personal or group, nothing desirable happens. Under 'group' my name appears broken seemingly into columns, as well as my user name, and my email addy for my gmail account. Funny about that gmail name, as I have never intentionally linked it to my tbird account. Please help this old granny, it is driving me insane. Not to mention that i've written this mozilla support bit at least 5 times and something wipes it out before I can submit it.

What happened when this change occurred? What is an "IDN update"?
Can you provide a screenshot (suitably obfuscated) to demonstrate the "my name appears broken seemingly into columns" effect?
I don't know of anything formally called a "group" in Thunderbird's address book, so any other words or names that appear might help here. For instance, my Address Book has mentions of Address Book Contact, Address Book and List. The "List" is perhaps the closest to the group concept used in other address book environments.
Finally, what version of Thunderbird and what OS are you usng?

  • "Sync Address Book Contacts" option missing all groups

I had a problem with multiple copies of contacts on my iPhone so I deselected the "Sync Address Book Contacts" box in iTunes before synching. The popup said that all contacts would be removed from the iPhone, and I clicked to proceed. When the sync was complete, I verified that all contacts had been removed from my iPhone (they were).
Then I reselected the "Sync Address Book Contacts" but noticed that all 15 of the groups from my MacBook that normally appear in the box with the All Contacts/Selected Groups button were missing. I opened Address Book and they were all there.
I did a backup of Address Book and then deleted all of my contacts on my MacBook. I quit and restarted my MacBook and then imported my Address Book backup before connecting my iPhone and trying to sync the contacts again, but again, none of the groups appeared in the window and after proceeding with the sync anyway, not a single contact went to the iPhone. I've tried it by both selecting and deselecting the Contacts box under the "Replace information on this iPhone".
    - I connected an iPod touch that didn't have any contact info to the MacBook and, as before, the groups from my address book did not show up and after synching, none of the contacts were installed on the iPod Touch, leaving me to believe that it is something iTunes related except that all of my calendars and music etc. sync without a problem.
    - I've got the latest iTunes (10.1) and Snow Leopard s/w updates.
    Any ideas?

Exported addresses from Address Book to desktop and then deleted all addresses from Address Book.
    Deleted file AddressBook-v22.ab** from Library>Application Support>AddressBook.
Exited Address Book and iTunes, restarted Address Book and imported addresses from desktop.
Restarted iTunes and all of the groups were visible in the "Synch Address Book Contacts" window.
