Address Book contains both 'biz card' entries and email entries

I'm a recent convert to Mail from Eudora.
I'm rattled when I view Address Book's contents and see cards that only show an email address.
a) I'd like to know how they got in there to begin with, and
b) I'd like to remove them in order to be able to view only Name, Company, Phone#, Address data
In other words, since Mail executes Autofill, why would I need a card in Address Book with only an email address? Unless there is a purpose for those cards, which is my real question here, I'm going to remove them. Will wait first to hear some good tech help responses. (fyi, the Genius at my One-on-One was not able to tell me why they are there).
TIA!!!
Sonia

Well, yeah. That goes without saying. The issue is that the hundreds of email entries I see in my Address Book I never chose to put in. Don't know how they got there or why. thx anyway!

how can I send an email to a group in my address book, but hide the individual names and email addresses?

You used to be able to do this through leaving unchecked the box in preferences "when sending to a group show all member addresses". However, that feature failed some time ago (two or three years?) and the only way to hide the addresses now is to put the group in the BCC field.

  • Address Book: How do you select, copy and paste info to an email?

I look up a contact in my Mac Address Book and want to cut and paste email/address and phone into an email I am writing in another application - in this case using AOL online.
It seems that you cannot select and paste the information or selected parts of it from the Address Book to the email using the usual key commands to select/copy/paste text?
It is as if you are trying to copy from a photo... am I the only one to find this a completely mindless limitation of the Address Book?
Or is there something obvious I am missing?
    thanks in advance

This is insane!  I switched to Mac a few years ago (still use XP/Win7/Linux at work) and generally like it. However, I keep running into these idiotic and arbitratry limitations!  I want to create a bunch of address cards for people I work with.  Everthing is the same except phone extension, name, and email.  There's no way to copy/duplicate contacts in Mac Address Book or on my iPhone.  And, like many similar issues, if I dare to ask about it at an "Expert Bar", I'll first get a look of confusion and when I finally get the person to understand, I'll just get the useless response of "that's how it works".   No ideas for work-arounds. No reporting to Apple development. Just the attitude of "why would anyone want to do anything it doesn't already do?"
It's great having all the Apple stores around here and being able to ask (simple) questions, but they're really not able to deal with much more than older folks who just bought a Mac and don't know how to use a computer at all. If you've been using dozens of computers and operating systems for 20+ years, they don't want to talk to you.

  • Imported address book contains six copies of each address

I imported my Outlook Express address book (Address Book.WAB) into TB, but now I have six copies of each address in the imported address book. Deleting the imported address book and importing again only adds another copy of each address. How can I eliminate all the extra copies of each address?

Gosh, after three days cannot anyone tell me how to (COMPLETELY) delete my imported address book so I can start fresh? Each time I think I have deleted my imported address book, I try to import again and the book contains one additional copy of each address. I am up to six copies at present. It seem apparent to me that each time I am not successfully deleting the imported address book

  • I lost my address book when I installed Mountain Lion and have not been able to recover it.  WHen I type in a name in an email the address shows up, so I know it is in there.  How can I restore my address book?

I don't know how to do this.  I typed the question in the bar above, but apparently need to type it again here.  I lost my entire address book when I installed Mountain Lion and have been unable to recover it.  I know the information is in there as when I type in someone's name in an email the address always shows up right away.  How can I find the information for my contacts and restore my address book? Do I need to go to the Apple Store that is 2 hours away and have an expert help me or can I find out how to do it online for free myself?

The auto-complete in Mail addresses comes from two sources: (1) The "Previous Recipients" list, which can be viewed via Mail > Window > Previous Recipients. (2) Your Address Book (now called "Contacts").
If you did in fact lose your Address Book - are you sure you don't have "Contacts" in your Applications Folder? - It sounds like you are getting addresses from source (1).  If you did in fact lose your  Address Book (now called "Contacts" !!), you will have to restore it from a backup.

My Thunderbird page is screwed up - there is no address book appearing in the tool bar and i do not see a "write" tab - just "message" how can I restore back to normal?
Would so much appreciate help... frustrating.

Sounds like you are missing the Mail Toolbar.
Do you have a Menu Bar with File-Edit-View etc?
If not press the alt key to make it appear.
From the Menu Bar select View-Toolbars and turn the missing toolbars back on.
Write and Address Book are on the Mail Toolbar.
FYI: The alt key or F10 will make a missing toolbar appear in most applications.

  • My email account has been hacked and my address book has been used to send unsolicitated emails to all my contacts, how can I stop this activity

My email account has been hacked and my address book has been used to send unsolicitated emails to all my contacts.

    First of all
Run windows in safe mode (with network) and change your password on your email account.
    Then
run several anti-malware programs (there are many free ones, but not all are trustworthy)
    Malwarebyte >> http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
    Microsoft Safety Scanner >> http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
    Windows Defender >> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-defender
    Spybot >> http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
    Kasperky >> http://www.kaspersky.com/security-scan
    Rootkit scanner TDSS-Killer >> http://support.kaspersky.com/5350
And when all is clean, change password for your email account again.

  • Can I use my Address Book to create a data base and then merge from it to create mailing labels?

Is it possible to use my Address Book to create a data base and then merge from it to create mailing labels?
    Thanks,
    CF

I know one way, it is not elegant but it does work.
    1. Open Thunderbird. (download here: https://www.mozilla.org/EN/thunderbird/)
    2. Click on Address Book.
    3. On the left in the new window is a list of your Address books and groups. Select the one you want.
Your addresses will appear to the right.
    4. In Thunderbird / Tools select Export, and Save as "Comma Separated".
You can open that list of addresses in Excel or in FileMaker Pro. Mail merge proceeds from there.

  • When I send an email my contacts are changed in my Address Book on both my Mac and  iPhone4.

All my contacts are entered only in the first name space. ie John Smith is entered as John Smith in just the first name entry space - I don't use the last name space at all. When I send an email, that person's address gets changed immediately my address book which duplicates the first name into the last name space. I have tried deleting all my contacts and resynching them from my iPhone but the problem persists. Can anyone help me fix this?
I am running an iMac with Lion and my mail client is Mail. My ISP is gmail.

Double check your contacts email, and if its incorrect, go to their contact and change it and save it or you can delete the email you put in, and manually type it in.
    Hope this helps.

  • I don't get it: Address Book's low quality, UI mess, and bugs stand out...

... especially compared to all other great Leopard apps.
Hi Folks. I'm a switcher from Windows XP, and generally I've been very impressed with 10.5.2, and happy with my decision (Macbook Pro 2GB, 2.2GHz). However, one of the most incredibly painful experiences I've had is using the Address Book application.
Please forgive my sounding negative, but compared to the other apps on OS X, it is really, really crappy. This is after having imported and edited around 1,000 contacts. The ultimate deal-breaker here is trust: I put many hours into this thing, to find it's extremely easy to lose entries/data. The undo, UI mess, and save problems combine to make me nervous as **** every time I edit. Hit escape? Where'd that phone number go? Hit undo? You might have undone something three edits ago!
I don't want to be unfair to Apple - OS X is really good, and I recommend it. But this one program just is not ready for prime time... Three things:
First, can anyone give some background on this program? Not to be rude here, it just feels like something that was thrown together without much thought, was a very low priority, or was a summer assignment to an intern as a "learn the API" demo, but who didn't have the experience to put together a solid, functional program.
Second, can anyone recommend a usable replacement that works well? I have Office 2008, with Entourage, but I frankly don't trust MS apps to work well either, or to play nice with others (e.g., Spotlight).
Finally, below are a few observations after using the program for a week - not complete bug reports (sorry, I'm too busy to debug for you, Apple) but just a few examples of the pain the program's caused me. Am I alone in this?
    matt
o #1 problem: It's lost my trust - the ultimate sin of a program. If I
hadn't created a backup, more than once I would have been extremely
screwed. Cards someone disappearing, field edits lost, etc.
o Edit/view modes: Bad. Apple: go read your own UI guidelines on this.
o What's up with Save? It seems to be automatic (saves when I exit),
but also has a command. Sadly, there is a bug in which Save disabled
when in View (not Edit) mode, >> even if changes have been made <<
(e.g., in the notes field, which can be edited in non-Edit
mode. Another example: add a smart group, try to save - gets a beep.
o Selection in Notes field: I can not figure out the selection
logic. Clicking on it selects all, but seems crazy inconsistent, e.g.,
it re-selects all when trying to make an edit. Want to really see
    problems? Try shift-clicking!
o Undo is horribly unpredictable - It should simply undo the last
edit, whether it was typing in a field, merging cards, deleting a
card, etc. Unfortunately, it's not consistent. For example: delete a
card, edit a few others, then undo - undoes the delete, not the
edits. Many other problems with undo...
o Escape key: I can't figure this out: Does it undo, clear, or abort
    editing? It's a mess.
o Printing formats: I can't say enough how terribly limited this
is. For example, it doesn't support classic planner sizes, and the
    compact format is ungodly.
o Non-mouse navigation and editing is extremely frustrating, and 100%
keyboard operation seems impossible. For example, you can't select
field pop-ups (work, mobile, etc) or check the "Company" checkbox.
o CSV import just plain broken - unusable. I read practically every
post here on the topic, and it's terrible. I was able to work-around
the bug by using vCard instead, which does work. Had to convert from
CSV to vCard using an external program (Gmail). Ugh.
o BUG: Creating a new note puts an extra space character in the field.
o No support for encrypted information in Notes field. Isn't this
    built in to OS X?
o I'd really like to be able to copy an address in one card, and
paste it into a new contact with fields preserved.
o BUG: Can't print multiple smart groups: Shift-select two ore more
smart groups, type command-P, it de-selects!
o Bug: Editing fields sometimes allows selection of the field name
itself, e.g., you can select the "Note:" tag on left.
o Q: Any way to filter items that are printed by whether a field is
empty or not? I have some without phone numbers, and I don't want to
    print them...

Are you using the access control list on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)? If so, turn it off.
Open the Network preference pane. Drag AirPort to the top of the list. Better yet, disable Ethernet. Can it connect?
If that isn't it... the list of possibilities is short. The IP address starting with 169 indicates that it is not properly connecting with the DHCP server on the AEBS. Apparently, reading through your text, you have successfully established the wireless connection with the AEBS it is the communication with the DHCP server that is failing.
Have you been able to try the MacBook on other wireless networks?
Did you accidently configure this AEBS to use WDS? If so there is an option that prevents wireless clients from joining.
If you do have WDS enabled, you should disable it since you aren't wirelessly connecting any other base stations.

  • When importing my address book from Outlook why do I have multiple entries for the same contact?

I have an address book and it contains one list in Outlook. I just downloaded Thunderbird and imported my address book. The address book and one list imported very easily but there are anywhere from 3-5 entries for each person in my contacts. If I delete the extras they are removed from my list as well. Why are there multiple listings for each contact and how can I remove the duplicates without losing my list entries?

as I was looking thru pictures in my finder I noticed there were several copies of the same pictures I had taken yesterday. I just went thru all Seven copies of the pictures (accidental pics of my hands and the desk etc) and right clicked and moved  them to trash, then I thought I'd look it up when I realized its not just these pics, but very many had een stored in groups of three or four.
    1. Why is that?
Depends on where you saw them - If they were in the iPhoto library iPHoto has either two or three different versions (no duplicates) or each photos in its library - this is not optional and can not be changed  --  If they were not in the iPhoto library then you can do what you please with them and they have nothing to do with iPhoto - iPhoto is only involved with the photos in its library
    2. Why is it advised to NEVER make changes to the structure or contents of iPhoto in Finder?
    (as quoted Below)
"I would suggest using one of the proven safe programs - if you are going to manually remove them be sure to remember that you NEVER make any chnages to the structure or contents of the iPhoto library using the finder - only make changes using iPhoto"
Very simple - if you do you will destroy your iPhoto library and have to start over losing all work you have done in iPhoto - The iPHoto library is a SQLite database and there are NO user servicable parts in the iPhoto library and any changes made using teh finder will corrupt the database and cause dataloss
Is that a good enopugh reason for you?
So if these photos were in the iPhoto library when you
I just went thru all Seven copies of the pictures (accidental pics of my hands and the desk etc) and right clicked and moved  them to trash,
You destroyed your iPhoto library and will either have to restore your backup from before you did this. put everything back EXACTLY like it was before or start over

  • CAUTION-MAJOR BUG Address Book's "Merge Selected Cards" DELETES CONTENT!

I have just realized (after losing much data) that when using the Merge Selected Cards function within the Apple Address Book that it will, without notification, delete content! That's right, if the two cards share different data but have the same field labels, Address Book will merge the two and simply keep the content in the 1st record (deleting the content in the 2nd).
For example... Two records (same contact), one record with a home-email and home-number and one with a work-email and work-number. However since both happen to have default field labels of "email" and "number" when you select "Merge..." you don't end up with two emails/numbers in the merged contact you actually only have the content from the 1st record.
Essentially "Merge Selected Records" = "Delete 2nd Record"
This is a major error. The feature should be removed asap until it is corrected!!

This bug still affects the Address Book v5.0.3 which is updated with the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update which has just been released.
Apple have been notified of this bug as far back as November 2009.
There are at least 3 separate RADAR bug reports about this issue.
There have been 3 Mac OS Snow Leopard updates since the bug was reported to them. The bug has not been fixed in any of these updates.
The bug does not affect Address Book v5.0
It does affect Address Book v5.0.1
It does affect Address Book v5.0.2
It does affect Address Book v5.0.3
Apple were notified in November 2009 after Address Book v5.0.1 was released that this problem existed. We also told Apple customer support. We told the Apple Store Regent Street Geniuses. We emailed Apple Developer Bug Reporting and were initial told they were aware of it, then we received no more replies.
The original thread in the forums detailing this issue is now archived even though the bug remains. So we cannot reply and update that thread.
We suggest you try and make as many people at Apple aware of this issue as we think it is very poor that they are aware of a serious data loss bug for 12 months and havent rectified it in many software and Address Book app updates.

  • Address Book: why do some Cards in a Group not get into the email?

I have a group with about 55 email addresses, each on a card in Address Book.  When I use the list in Apple's Mail program, two cards do not get included.
This has happened many times, and I keep verifying the name is in the group.

Well, before I read your response . . . I started looking more seriously at my Address Book cards.  Should have done this first! The problems ones had email addresses in the work phone field.
Unfortunately, when you look at the Card, both fields are labeled 'work.'  If you make a mistake filling it out, you can't see the error unless you Edit the card.
But thanks for trying to help me!  As a retired usability engineer, I hope someone will look at the labeling on the Cards!
