Address Book corrupt?

I received my new MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago and migrated from my old Macbook pro. I discovered today that my address book is empty. This seems a disaster, but I noticed when I start the program, the window opens briefly with all of my groups there and, apparently, all of the addresses (doesn't give me time to check). After about a second, the groups and contacts all disappear, and I am left with a blank contact list.
I tried to reload my addressbook.data file, just in case it got corrupted, but that did not help. I also exported the addresses from my old Macbook, copied them to the HD of the new Macbook, and then tried to import the list, but that did not work either.
Finally, I checked to see if I could re-install "Address Book.app" from the installer disc, but that is apparently not possible. Can someone help me out?

  • Address book corrupts names

Address book/Mail keeps corrupting some names in my address book.
I have had .mac on three mac's for a year and a half, syncing all my e-mails and address's.
For some reason certain names it keeps changing. eg. "Dad" becomes "Dad, Dad". This then syncs to my iPhone. So I delete the second Dad from one machine or the iPhone and sync it and they all go back to normal. Later when writing an e-mail it will spontaneously change back and will flicker between one or the other if you keep deleting and re-typing "dad" in the TO field or CC field.
Also it will be fine and i will be out of the house and and my machines will be home and off and my dad will call or e-mail, and it will go from "Dad" which i have seen in my address book earlier that day to "Dad, Dad". It happened to loads of contacts when i added my iphone to the .mac sync list and but they were mostly rectified by editing the entries and waiting for the sync to resolve it.
Short of Just deleting and re-adding the affected ones I don't know what to do. Also the iPhone moved all the first names to last names for some reason. so i moved them back but some of them have remained.
Is this some sort of inherent incompatibility with OSX Address book and .mac? my point being that it can be corrupted on any client then synced with the rest.

I agree that once you have two people called 'Dave' it then becomes necessary to have a surname and in-fact I've started adding all new people with surnames. I am however unlikely to ever have more than one entry for 'Mum' or 'Dad'.
Also when you say the names are in the e-mail address even if you don't see it my friend Jacob who's e-mail address I've recently added is [email protected] and it hasn't attempted to add Lord or Ermintrude as his surname or Jacob as his surname it's just left it as is, yet every single time i communicate with my dad it f*cks around trying to decide whether his name is 'Dad' or 'Dad, Dad' (see original post)
I might just copy everything into a text file, delete everyone in the address book, sync it to all machines/iPhone, then add everyone one at a time back into address book and let in sync back to everything else.
This is definitely new to the last month or so.

  • Blackberry Storm - Address Book Corrupt?

Contacts are either starting to disappear or can't be editted.  Why is that?  If I can find the contact, but want to make an update...  I get the following error message.
    Error Message:
Contact updated externally.  Changes will be lost and viewer closed.
If the contact is missing, sometimes I can find that missing contact if I go through the call history and view the contact info from that old entry, but I noticed that all new calls either called or received don't list the name in call history no more.  What's going on?  I don't have a very large address book, it has less than 300 entries...  Is there a utility to fix the corrupted address book database?  That's what I'm assuming is the problem...  Why do contacts disappear in the address book, but I can later find them if I go through a round about method of access via call history nor can I edit them?

  • Mail and Address Book corrupted?

When I open my Applications folder, the two icons for Mail and Address Book have changed to an unfamiliar icon (it's a picture of blank pages with an overlaid "A" similar to the ruler-and-pencil application icon). Moreover, neither application will open. I've tried restarting and I haven't connected and USB devices to swap the icons (a known issue)...what's happened?
    Thanks!
    Matt

Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using (which you haven’t provided), unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
You may also have to reinstall the following Security Update, which includes most of the security updates released after Mac OS X 10.3.9:
Security Update 2007-007 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Outlook 2003 Address Book Corrupt

    Does this article help?

Hello all.  I have purchased a new laptop running Windows 7.  I still run Office 2003 and Outlook 2003.  I use it as my front end to a web based mail service.  I have installed
Office 2003 with SP3 and it is all patched and matches the system that I am moving from.
The issue this time is that I see my emails and I see my contacts, but when I open a new message or respond to an old message and hit the TO or CC or BCC, I get the error that says “The address list could not be displayed.  The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved….”
There are no PAB files and I ran scanpst.exe on the PST file.
How do I repair this or make this work?
    Thanks for you help

  • Address Book on laptop is corrupt: which settings need to be reset?

The Address Book on each of my 2 laptops is corrupt (i.e. the AB when opened quits unexpectedly, without giving much options other than Report to Apple, and quit). But the Contacts data on MobileMe (and on the iPhone) is correct. I'd like to delete any and all of the sync settings on the laptops in order to start with a new and emtpy Address Book which then should be synced (and repopulated) with MobileMe. (I have saved the MobileMe data as V-cards by choosing all contacts and exporting and saving them in a vcf file format; I fear that I am loosing ALL group data this way!?).
    Here my questions:
    1. To get a "clean" slate for the address book and the syncing process, which databases and sync settings on the laptops do I need to delete and in what order? And much less importantly:
    2. How can the group data on MobileMe be saved/retained?
Thanks for any advice. Cheers, Veit

I think that you are right with your diagnosis that not the AB is corrupt, but perhaps the data, because:
    1. the problem occurred at the same time on my wife's laptop and on mine.
    2. although I re-installed the AB from the OS X disk with the help of the Pacifist application (see the thread below), the problem has not disappeared.
I also was able to eliminate synching issues as the root problem: I used a previously saved backup AB (not entirely current, of course) and could sync with MobileMe (replacing the data there, which I had saved in a .vcf file). I now seem to have a working AB which also syncs, BUT, and here comes the puzzlement: all contacts seem to be there, even all groups, BUT when I want to resize/enlarge the window to cover the whole screen, then the AB freezes up, the window becomes white and empty and after a while AB quits entirely on my laptop with no further notice, and on my wife's laptop gives me a message that AB quit unexpectedly (with a Relaunch and an OK option, but the relaunch produces the same results). Is there any explanation for this, that resizing produces a freeze and inadvertent quit? Is there a preference or settings file burried out there that interferes???
Somehow I have a hunch that the real culprit could be the groups which I had created, since I had noticed some strange results in these groups earlier; some groups were created by me, some are logically determined so called "smart groups". I wonder if I were to delete these groups in MobileMe (which of course I'd hate to loose) and re-synced whether the problem would disappear.
Your suggestions, to add .vcf cards one by one is appreciated, but I don't have them one by one, only ALL contacts in one single .vcf file; (furthermore with some 1500 contacts that would take forever).
I am wondering if you or anyone who follows this thread has suggestions how best to proceed. I am willing to try out any approach.
    Thanks in advance, Cheers, Veit

  • Corrupted/mangled Address Book entries

When I opend my Address Book today, many entries are corrupted. The corruption manifests in a couple ways: 1) existing address are added to Groups to which they don't belong - sometime they have been added multiple times to the same group; 2) random email addresses from other existing listings have been added to the email of another person. For example, the entry for John Smith should be a single email ([email protected]) - as corrupted, it shows 5 or 6 different email addresses for John Smith, all from other people in my Address Book.
I have tried using AddressBook.data.previous by changing the name, but it too appears corrupted. I believe this just started today, but I might be wrong because not every entry is corrupted.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Corrupted Address Book in Outlook Express

My father's note running XP, has suddenly decided that the address book in outlook express (ie6)is corrupt and it must be re-installed. I have looked around the web and this seems to be a fairly common problem, however the correction of
this seems fairly complex, surely Microsoft must have come up with a quick fix to this problem, especially as it seems of their making, what with faulty updates and the complexity of outlook and outlook express.
Please does anyone have a simple resolution to this problem, that we both can understand.
Thanks in advance to all those that take the time to reply.

Try to recover it manually. Or re-install your OE. Open Outlook Express from where the application is stored on your computer, then attempt to duplicate the error or problem you were previously experiencing. If
you are still experiencing problems, proceed with the following steps to reinstall Internet Explorer.
    http://www.filerepairforum.com/forum/microsoft/microsoft-aa/outlook-express/616-emails-and-address-book-are-gone
Go to the "Microsoft Support" website provided to you in the Sources section of this article, then scroll down to the section entitled "Method 2: Reinstall Internet Explorer."
Click on the appropriate link for Internet Explorer based on the version of Windows you are running. For example, if you have a 32-bit Windows Vista computer, you will be required to
download Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista.
Click on the "Download" box after you have been redirected to the appropriate Microsoft webpage for your version of Internet Explorer. A dialog box will then appear prompting
you to proceed with the download.
Launch Outlook Express from its location on your computer and try to duplicate the actions that previously caused errors. Outlook Express should now work successfully without presenting
    any issues or errors.

  • Address book scrolling corrupts list

whenever i scroll through my addresses with my trackpad, mouse or tablet, the addresses blur and become unreadable. clicking on the address column snaps it back into focus, but further scrolling corrupts it again. if i switch from "view card & column" to "view card" and back this is cured, until i open address book again. i've had this issue through the past two OSs (panther & tiger) - there are several posts about this here, but no definite fix. any ideas anyone?
    cheers

  • Need help recovering corrupted outlook express address book

So my dad's address book won't open. First, outlook express says that the address book isn't installed properly, and then that the address book file is corrupted. It has important business contacts, so its imperative that I save the data.
How can I get into the file? I can open it in notepad and I see a lot of the text, but its mostly names and I can't find any email addresses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Certainly you can.
    Use Desktop Manager > Sync.
Setup Outlook Express to sync with your device in Desktop Manager > Sync > Confgure. Find and select Outlook Express as the sync partner to your BlackBerry handheld address book.

  • Email-only contacts become merged/corrupted in address book

I have many contacts in address book. Most of them have some combination of phone number, first name, last name, notes, email address, etc. Some of my contacts have all fields blank except the email address field.
I have some groups in address book that are mostly email address-only contacts, for example a group full of listserv addresses.
Recently I have noticed that somehow these email-only contact groups are being corrupted so that extra addresses are slowly being added to each contact, seemingly from the next contact in the list. How bizarre.
So, for example if I have a contact card with no name, phone, etc., just the address "[email protected]", and the next card in the group is "[email protected]" somehow after awhile when i open the first contact, it suddenly has 2 email addresses listed, jsmith, and psmith! How does this happen?
The corruption seems to coincide with syncing with the iPhone. Perhaps it has something to do with how syncservices handles email-only addresses when it syncs back and forth with the iphone?
Anybody else having this problem? I believe it is new to Leopard but maybe not.

    Ted L. Nancy wrote:
If a contact card within a group has multiple emails, how can I get Mail to automatically send an email to both email addresses when sending to that group?
the only way to do that is to duplicate the address card for this contact and add it to a group twice. then control-click on the group in AB and select "edit distribution list". it will let you select which address to use for each individual contact in the group.
(e.g. Bob Jones has two emails: [email protected] and [email protected] I have both emails in his contact card in Address Book. Bob's card is in my group entitled "Friends." When composing a message in Mail.app, I type "Friends" so that it will automatically include all of my contacts in my Friends group. Currently, Mail only adds the first email listed for Bob. How do I get it to add both of Bob's emails?)

  • HELP! Address Book database all lost, says "corrupted", won't open.

    HELP!
Recently installed Tiger 10.4.3 combo update. Or --- did that FBI virus get me? The same day as update I noticed a bunch of spam in my dotmac email (it's forwarded to Yahoo account). One spam was that FBI scam. As soon as I uploaded the spam attachment to forward to the real FBI site complaint address, my entire address book was wiped out. All files. Now it won't open, even for me to attempt to merge or Sync or to import my backup AB files. Error message comes up after about 2 seconds and it says "COULDN'T OPEN THE ADDRESS BOOK DATABASE. The database is corrupted" with a 'quit' button.
Can I uninstall AB somehow? If so, how? Can I reinstall a fresh version, too?
    HELP!

  • Address Book Database corruption & No iSync 3.0 Launch on 10.5.1

1- After I upgraded to Leopard and subsequently to 10.5.1, I noticed that my address book application went blank (no data). I've tried to import my contact .txt files, or import vCards, but, I keep getting the message that my Address Book database is corrupted.
2- I have also tried to use iSync to sync my address book, or my mobile phone, but, I keep getting a launch failure on iSync 3.0
Any suggestions or helpful tips appreciated.

For the benefit of other users, it would still be great if you guys would tell us how you resolved the situation....
Meanwhile, I found a solution on another Apple-related forum.... A user there had the same symptoms, and after a bunch of trial-and-error with an extremely knowledgeable guy who was walking the user through various steps, this was the result:
+"trash[ing] the ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/ folder did it... Usually touching that folder brings good karma...glad that it's fixed now."+
It seemed like a radical move, because on my MacBook Pro that folder contained over 500 megs of data (although it may have been abnormally bloated)! But I had everything backed up, so here's what I did:
    1. I moved the folder, referenced above, to my desktop. (Note that "~" indicates your home folder.)
    2. Restarted my macine.
    3. Opened the .Mac preference pane, then clicked "Sync"
(Note: Previously, clicking "Sync" had been causing the Prefs window to behave as though It had "crashed," and the fan on the Mac turned on, as it does when the processor runs hot. So just being able to successfully click "Sync" was a really big deal in this case.)
    4. Clicked the "Advanced" button, selected the MacBook Pro, then clicked "Reset Sync Data" and made sure that I was replacing data on .Mac with the data from the computer (which I knew was good data). In other words, I made sure that the animated arrow was moving away from the computer and toward .Mac, indicating the direction of the data transfer.
(The folder I deleted in step 1 contained a lot of sync data. So without step #4, I was concerned that .Mac -- with its data having been deleted -- might have interpreted that as a signal to delete the data on the Mac. So I performed step #4 to make sure that didn't happen.)
    5. Then I clicked "Sync now."
This was the first time I'd gotten sync to work for at least 36 hours. Also, after the sync was completed, the new "Local" folder, which replaced the one I deleted, only had 62 megs of data. That's why I suspect that the deleted folder was abnormally bloated.
So far so good.... I hope this description has been helpful.

  • Address book files corrupt when transfered to motorola phone

Motorola pebl phone   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   via bluetooth

Motorola phone and Address Book might not agree of what a correct VCard is.
I would say that the main problem is the encoding.
Does your card contain special characters?
Go in Address Book preferences -> VCard and change encoding to UTF8 or change VCard version down to 2.1.
