Address Book - downloading vCard no longer displays updated/new contact

On 10.5.6 and earlier, if I had an option in an application to Download a users vCard, I could click it, be given the option to add, review or merge with an existing contact. Address book would display the new/updated contact for verification/editing.
On Snow Leopard 10.6.1 (Address Book 5.0), everything pretty much works the same except I am not taken to that new/updated contact. I must manually scroll or search for the contact to see if it is acceptable. With 1500+ records, it is kind of a drag.

Add me to this problem:
Not only is the new contact not displayed, it's placed in the Last Import group, and there's no way to remove it. Deleting from that group deletes the record in ALL GROUPS.
Subsequent vcf/vcard downloads are simply added to Last Import, along with previously imported records.

  • Moving Mail, Address Book and Keychains from Old Computer to New Computer

My issue: Moving mail, address book and keychains from Panther (old machine) to Leopard (new machine). Old machine (500mh G4 power pc) will not connect directly via firewire to new machine (iMac intel). So, I have to move the files manually via a firewire hard drive.
I am looking for a document that will tell me exactly which files to move. Can someone please help me find this document? Thank you. Dale
P.S. I have no issues with installing Leopard. I only need to move the mail, address book and keychains from old to new machine. No .mac account is available.

for address book: go to your old mac, launch ab, and go to file>export and export your contacts as vcards, select all cards before that, then bring that export file to the new mac, and launch ab there, then go to file>import as vcards and you should be set as far as contacts are, but not as far as groups if you have extensive groups. that would be the safe option. the other option is to go to homefolder/library/application support/address book and move that folder to the new mac. the only question i have is... is the database structure and files the same between panther and leopard, which is why i suggest the first option of import/export of vcards.
for mail, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/mail and move that mail folder to the new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
for keychain, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/keychain, you want to bring the file that is in that folder to your new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
once that is done, you may have to do some more steps with mail, once you launch mail, such as importing mailboxes. let me know if that is the case.
    hope this helps

Sync between MacBookPro and iPhone 3G does not sync properly.  Calendars duplicate events but worse is that only contacts from Address book from letter T onwards sync.  Any contacts on iPhone which are not on Mac are lost during sync.
    Solutions?

No, I never really found an easy solution.  I believe it is an issue with some corruption in the iTunes database on the specific device.  In my case, both my iPad and iPhone now show duplicate stream songs if viewed through iTunes on my Mac, but they show different songs.  A couple years ago I had a similar issue on my iPhone, and Apple support suggested I back up the phone, completely reset it, and then restore it from the backup.  It did work, so I imagine it would probably work for my current issues with the iPhone and iPad.  But resetting and restoring an iPad or iPhone always makes me a little nervous that something will get lost.  When I did reset/restore the iPhone, I do have to say, the restore process was 100% perfect and I did not lose any data at all even though Apple support said I might.  If you try to go that route, I would suggest backing the device up both to a computer through iTunes, and to the iCloud so that you have a double backup.
None of this really resolves the issue with how the iTunes databases are becoming corrupted on the apple devices though, so it is very likely to happen again until they fix it.  I have been unable to determine if there were any specific actions or conditions which caused the corruption to happen in the first place.
Might be worth another call to Apple support, or dropping in the local Apple store if you have one near by.

  • Address book in Lion tries to send updates to wrong URL in carddav server

As the title says. We have lion with address book. Out of the box.
We have a caldav carddav server that has been used with older macs no problem, and iphones work perfectly also with the server.
    This is the problem.
The account is set up on the address book app, and the initial connection works perfectly.
After adding username, password and server address, the address book application finds the correct contacts at the following URL:
    /principles/users/[email protected]
You can see this url if you go to the preferences/accounts. You cant edit the URL, which is strange, as you can in iCal (ical works perfectly BTW)
Initial read from the server is fine.
If we change a contact on the server, then click on the address book application, you see the spinner for a second, and the new changes can be seen.
If you make a change on the address book, the changes are NOT reflected on the carddav server.
Both Macbook and server on on same LAN
    Server ip address is 10.200.200.51
    The port is 8008
The principle URL is /principals/users/[email protected] (which is shown in the address book app as correct)
However, when the address book is changed, and it tries to update the server we see the following on the macbook logs as it is trying to update the server:
You will notice it looks like the address book is trying to connect to a folder that does not exist on the server.

What is interesting is that ical works perfectly (in both directions)
Im not sure if the '%40' in the address book app for the '@' symbol is an issue??
The server path url in address book is not editable as it does not sit in a editable field, unlike it is in ical.
Either way, both the ical and address book find the principle URL correctly, but the address book app then uses a different url when it tries to connect to upload changes made on the address book app.
Any help would be really appreciated!! :-) Maybe there is a way to change the URL in a settings file somewhere???
    thanks

I have a similar issue. My initial iCloud sync works fine and then when I try to merge a contact I get an error. My iCloud doesn't sync after the initial sync it seems.

  • Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010 Offline Address Book Download

    Hi All,
Strange problem that I can't seem to get to the bottom of.
On a couple of users, about 10/100, can't seem to download the Offline Address Book. When they do a manual Download Address Book through Send/Receive Group, the progress window will remain at about 5% and the status will show "Copying Offline Address Book
Template File". If I leave the window, it will be the same for a couple of hours without erroring out.
We have a casarray set up, forced the ports to 59595 and 59596 for the address book as mentioned the guide. We are not doing SSL redirect on the Virtual Directory. Test-AutoConfiguration from Outlook returns the correct entries. Works for most users but
    not all.
On the users that do not work, I've tried deleting the users profile, deleting the Outlook Directory under AppData. Sometimes, magically (for a lack of a better word), if I check the Offline Address Book Directory a few days later, there are files there.
If I then do a manual Download, same thing, the progress bar will be stuck.
Puzzling as I'm not quite sure what else to check.
All clients are on Windows 7 and Outlook 2010.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dave K

I also used your recipe  --disconnect the wireless mouse-- and the OAB update worked right away.
(It is not a Microsoft mouse.   )
    Thanks for the information.
I have been trying to find information on non-HID.
If you have any quick tips or a pointer to info about this, I wanted to get a better understanding of this topic.
Does this "wireless" for the mouse use the same "wireless" for the laptop regular network access via WiFi ?
(We had some evidence that when the laptop did not use the wireless mouse the OAB worked OK and/or when the laptop was running only on WiFi the OAB worked OK.    Not sure if this is all the same root cause.)
Also, does anyone know if this is something that Microsoft will fix at some point ?
We are trying to determine if "few or many" people here might be having OAB failures and have not reported it.
    Thanks again.

  • Address Book: Importing vcards with embedded photos

    Hi folks,
This question would perhaps be more at home in the Apple Developer Connection Forums, but as I can't access those without a paid ADC account, I thought I'd try here on the off chance someone knows.
In short, I'm writing an application that does clever things with vcards, and it would be great if it could export them to Address Book.
That in itself is simple, but I'd also like to embed a photograph in each vcard. So, I'm successfully encoding the image into a base64 string (tested), and other applications like Entourage will happily open and see the image, but Address Book won't.
After much Google-ing I've learned that apparently Address Book expects very specific formatting (and possibly whitespace) in and around the base64 string, which is all well and good, except no one seems to know what that formatting is!
I've looked in the ADC Reference Library but it doesn't go into enough detail.
So, is there anyone who happens to know how to format a base64 string for Address Book?
EDIT: I am aware that Address Book doesn't require the string to be wrapped, and I have tried not wrapping my base64 string and if I do that then my vcards will successfully import with their photos (Entourage seems happy with unwrapped strings too).
However, this is not an ideal solution as other vcard applications may not be so accepting, and I don't believe vcards can have multiple photo fields.

Thanks, but right now I can't afford the $500 I'd have to spend in order to buy the sufficient level of ADC membership to use the developer forums. I just thought I'd ask here on the off chance, as I know there are sometimes a few developers lurking around.
Having said that, after reading posts such as this: http://markmail.org/message/5dbslpeyhjcjxug4
I'm beginning to think there are only a handful of people who know the answer, so I may have to give up and use a work-around.

  • ICal and Address Book fonts--how do you display them in their own font?

I tried printing address labels from Mac's Address Book. It was pretty intuitive and straight forward. However, when I was prepping to print, I had the chance to change the fonts. The list of fonts was not presented with each font name in the font itself (does this make sense?).
When I use Excel or Word and want to change fonts from Arial to Times New Roman, I go to the font chooser, and Times New Roman is displayed in Times New Roman font. If I want to be creative and pick something new, it's easy to see how it will appear, because the name of the font is displayed in the font its describing.
Is there a setting I need to adjust in order to make this work in Address Book and/or iCal?
    Thanks!
    Terel

On one hand they make Mail look stark, like the interior of a Porsche 911, gray, gray, gray, (boring)  and on the other hand they make iCal look like some 3rd party creation where they paid a graphic designer 250.00 to come up with a cool look.  Cheesy!
Probably designed by some unemployed Windows XP graphic 'artist.'
As to Address Book.  Why complicate something that is already working just fine.

  • Address Book download FROM .Mac

My Windows Mobile Phone freaked out during the Daylight Savings issue this weekend and erased my Contacts from itself. Then upon Syncing it with my Macintosh Address Book, it erased all of those as well. Now the only place that I have a full list of contacts is on .Mac Address Book.
How do I download those addresses back to my Address Book on my Mac? I only have these all backed up on the .Mac webpage, so I really only have one shot at it.

  • Snow Leopard's Address Book now Requires Full Name to find a Contact

In all previous versions of Address Book, the user could simply type 'T' to instantly go to contacts with last names that start with 'T' (and businesses that start with 'T').
In Snow Leopard, Address Book can no longer search with one letter the way it did before; it uses a 'Spotlight' type of search where the user must type the full name in order to get an exact match. This type of searching is useful for finding documents on the Mac or searching the Internet, but is totally inefficient for finding contacts in Address Book.
It sounds like someone at Apple decided this was a better way to search for contacts, because this change in search method is described in the new Address Book 'Help' file; it says, "As you type, Address Book begins to search all the information on the cards, including notes, and displays matching contacts, with the matching text highlighted in each card." For example, let's say someone used to type 'T' to search for a contact named Bill Tilman. Now what happens is that Address Book stops at the first person who's first name starts with 'T', and highlights all the T's in the person's card (the T in 'telephone', the T in 'Street', etc. The user must now scroll through all their contacts manually to find Bill Tilman, or else manually type out the complete name 'Bill Tilman'. (If they just type 'Bill', they will only get the first person named Bill.)
I hope Apple will reconsider and will allow Address Book to do the quick one-letter searches by last name (as opposed to 'Sort' by last name, which it still has) like it used to. (Or at least make this a choice in Address Book Preferences.) This would also be more compatible with the way iPhone searches for contacts; when you select a letter in the iPhone's contacts, it finds contacts who's last name starts with that letter, as well as businesses, just like Address Book always used to.

Thanks for your response Ernie. You are correct in that whenever you type a series of letters, Address Book (as it always has) finds every single thing with that combination of letters - Names, businesses, adjectives, people's dogs' names, letters in product serial numbers, etc. This is useful for finding a subject on the Web, or finding all documents related to 'iPhoto' on your Mac, etc., but not useful, quick or convenient when trying to find one person to call in your Address Book (which is what people use Address Book for).
What is DIFFERENT in the Snow Leopard version, is that the ability to type one letter to instantly go to last names with that letter has been removed. Previously, you could easily find 'Bill Tilman' in one second by simply typing 'T'. Now you get every word that starts with T and all the words in the card that have a T in them. If you type out a full name like 'Bill', it finds every person named Bill. No one would ever want to find all their contacts named Bill to call them. You could type out the full last name 'Tilman', but there again you are forced to type out a complete name to do a search. It would actually be quicker to scroll down and find it manually. The ability to type a single letter to find the last name (or business name) of a contact you needed to call, was much quicker and easier than having to type out the entire name.

  • V card for address book? anything underway? need to attach contact info from address book to email, other than my own data.

Outlook had this nice feature allowing v card attachment for any contact in the address book to be attached to outgoing email. Will Thunderbird ever have something equivalent? Currently using Select Address book Text add on but still not V Card attach simplicity.

There is an addon which can help.
    MoreFunctionsForAddressBook.
    * https://freeshell.de/~kaosmos/morecols-en.html
Download file to desktop or downloads file.
    In Thunderbird
    Tools > Addons
    or
    Menu icon > addons
click on gear wheel icon and select 'Install addon from file'
locate the file you downloaded and click on Open
You will need to restart Thunderbird at prompt.
    In 'Address Book'
right click on contact in list and select 'Send as vcard'.
If you want to add more than one vcard:
Press Ctrl key and select contacts to highlight, then right click on highlighted contacts and select Send as vcard'.
This opens a new Write message with that contact(s) added as vcard attachment(s).
There is also the option from the 'Contacts Sidebar' in a new Write window, but I'm not having any success from this method at this moment...maybe it will work for others...perhaps due to a bug, but I've reported it the author. At least it still works via Address Book.

  • How do I use the address book feature which allows you to connect your contacts to their social networking profiles? (in Lion)

When I look up the 250+ new features of Mac OSX Lion, under address book, there's a new feature that interests me.
"Address Book lets you quickly access the social network profiles for your contacts, including Facebook. Press and hold an email address to select the appropriate profile."
Somehow I can't get it to work. What do I do?

Make sure it's on the Template (see the entry for Twitter):
Then update the contact with the relevant info.
For Twitter you can then click and hold the Twitter tag to either View Profile or Send Tweet.

  • HT2486 how do I know what account a contact is in (Icloud, on my mac, etc) if it is already in my address book. also how can I change an existing contact to my iCloud account?

I have upgraded to Lion so that I can use iCloud.
when I select a contact in the address book, I can't tell what account it is in,
and I can't change the contact to iCloud if it's not already in that account, so the
contact comes up on my other devices.
This seems like a very basic function, yet if I want a contact to be on iCloud, it
seems I have to create a new contact with iCloud selected in the preferences.
    is there another way?

    Happy to help.
    Some good news:
Address Book will become Contacts in Mountain Lion and the addition of the Group column to the display will make working with differnt accounts a bit more obvioius and easier.
