I am getting an external hard-drive this winter, but I don't have one yet. So a solution other than that is ideal.
(1) Instead of Time Machine, you could restore your contacts from other backups you use. Moreover, there is no requirement for the backup files to be on a hard drive.
  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
Even if you do not backup your entire startup disk, you will want backups of any important, expensive, or irreplaceable files plus those shown in this Apple article:
  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8771.html
(2) If you have no backup, the only way I know to get your Address Book contact info back is to recreate it.
As soon as you re-enter your Address Book info, use the Address Book > File > Export... > Address Book Archive... menu command to create an archive.
The archive can be used to restore your data should the problem occur again. Rather than recreating the entire Address Book database, you can restore the archive and will then need to recreate only the changes since the archive was created.
Typical Address Book archives are only a few megabytes, so, in addition to keeping a copy in your Documents folder, you can save an extra copy on another computer, writable CD or DVD, or even Flash (jump) drive. To safeguard against loss due to hard disk crash, it is vital that you keep your principal backup/archive somewhere other than your startup disk. I think you can see that more than one copy on more than one media is a good idea.
I am slow on the keyboard, so I recreate my archive monthly in addition to Time Machine and the other backups I keep.

  • Address book application missing!

no address book in my applications folder. when i do a search of my hard drive address book is missing. how do i reinstall it?

I don't currently have Panther installed on any of my Macs, and I cannot parallel what you have done. To the best of my knowledge this option should not be there, or at least should not be what you expect it to be.
I believe you have only used the Restore disk to restore "bundled applications" -- see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42929
    and also
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300396
AB is not a bundled application, but part of the OSX.

  • Address Book Folder??

I deleted my user (For reasons I'd rather not say) so I am moving things to my new user by the "Deleted" user folder. I just realized I don't have my Address Book contacts! Is there a folder in the Home Folder that contains the Address Book Contacts?

you still have the "old" files right? just keep them as back up.
ok, quit ab ad all other applications, go back to your new homefolde/library/application support/address book folder and locate the three following items 1) addressbook.data, and tell me what size it is, then 2) metadata folder and 3) addressbook-v22.abcddb
your addressbook.data file should (depending on how many contacts you have) be of a sizeable size, if that is the case it means you did drag your address book data ok, so you only need to remove the two other items, the metadata folder and the .abcddb file. once you have removed them to the desktop for example, then open ab again and see if all your contacts are there. if so, then you can delete the two files you moved to the desktop.
    hope this helps

  • How do I import existing contract with just "Address Book" folder?

I did a clean install of Leopard, and now my Tiger backup is unbootable. I do have access to the files, though. I need to get my contacts from my address book from my Tiger backup. I can't seem to get the Leopard Address Book to recognize any contacts from the old ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ folder on my backup.
How do I accomplish getting my old contacts to my new install?

I figured it out. I took the ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ folder from my old Tiger backup and placed that in my new Leopard /Library/Application Support/ while temporarily renaming the original. Opening up Address Book from there then opened up my old contacts. I then did an export.
After that, I deleted the old ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ folder from my Tiger backup I put in my Leopard system, and restored my original Leopard /Address Book/ folder.
Then, I just imported the export I did from the old data.
    Tada.....it worked.

  • Missing Address Book Folder in Application Support

I've been having problems with my Address Book for a long time, now. Ever since my friend accidentally synced his iPhone with my computer and merged all our contacts. I had gone in and deleted the contacts, but the program has been buggy. As it stands, there are 0 Cards in my Address Book.
I loaded the BETA for Face Time for Mac to see how it worked, knowing that I had nothing in my Address Book. Or so I thought. The BETA application pulled names from way back when my friend had all his contacts on my computer, and my old ones, but they aren't around!!
I started looking around for what could be wrong, and realised the folder for Address Book in the Application Support folder is missing (i.e. ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/)... What do I do?
    Please help.

Thanks for the "helpful" star feedback.

  • Address Book Images Missing

Almost all of my images in the Address Book have disappeared. The few that are there are the last 3 or 4 I added. When I look in Application Support/AddressBook/Images folder, I can actually find the missing images. However the UUID doesn't match the contact file in the Metadata folder.
    1) What could cause this to occur?
    2) Is there any way to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've had the same thing happen to me, too. I'm guessing it happened sometime in the last few weeks. I can find the folder with the images but they aren't showing up in the address book or mail. What happened?

  • My old address book is missing

I had to replace my modem & when bought my computer back up address book was empty!! How do I get my addresses back?

Replacing such hardware shouldn't remove any data.
    * Is the address book the only data missing?
    * Did you have to reinstall any software or move any files?
    * Did you [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_backing-up-a-profile make a backup of your Thunderbird profile in the recent past]?
Your Thunderbird data is stored in [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb a profile folder].
[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_address_books_between_profiles This article provides detailed information about addressbooks files].
    * Are the files still there?
Having the information requested above will also help, thanks in advance.

  • When forwarding an email, is there a way to have an Address Book folder drop down to allow selecting the adressees?

When I forward emails, I usually want to forward to a number of folks from one or two of my Address Book folders and I don't normally want to send to all of the people in each of those folders. I like to tailor the mailing list for each email and in other email apps I've used, once I click on the TO: or BCC: box, a list of my Address Book folders drops down and then I can select a folder from which I can just click on each of the recipients I want for that specific email message. Is this a capability of Thunderbird?

Once you have the Write window open, press F9 to open the Contact Sidebar. Select your contacts from there.

  • It seems that some of my address book is missing. How can I get that back?

The address book looks different now. And some of my addresses are not there. How do I get them back?

It makes sense to save tabs/sites as bookmarks, maybe in groups as a folder so that you are able to open say 10 or so related tabs in one go. see also [/en-US/questions/910138#answer-296903]

  • All Address Book cards missing

Came in to work and started my Mac and went to send an email to a staff member and their email address didn't pop up after the first three letters?
Went to check Address Book and all cards are missing! I've been reading other posts and the difference for me was that I wasn't doing anything like transferring files or-the-like; very weird.
Only OS thing I did the day before was to set it to log out when in active for 70mins. Otherwise no change??
I did download Address Book restore files from my iDisk using BackUp and downloaded a file: AddressBook.data, but Address Book won't import or read this file so I can't restore my cards.
Please help, as you can appreciate loosing all contacts is very serious. With thanks. W

  • Address book categories missing

In Palm Desktop by Access, my address book catetories are missing and I can't restore them.
I created new categories and intended to re-designate the catetory for each entry, however in the list view I am not able to change the catetgories at all.  And when I view the entry in a detailed view, the correct catetorie is already choose.  Re-choosing the category from this view does not change the unfiled status of the entry when in the list view.  So in list view, I can sort alphabetically, but I can't view individual catetories.
I have a back up that's about a week old, and I wouldn't loose that much to revert to that version, but I'd rather not if I can help it.  Can anyone offer a suggestion of how to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Liz
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

I answered in your other post but there is no category feature on the Z30 address book.
I don't use categories in my Outlook so I can't verify that one for you.

  • Address Book folder in /Documents/ ?!?

Just opened /Documents/ folder to find that there's a folder in there at the top level named "Address Book" which contains subfolders named "Metadata" and "Images" Can anyone tell me how it got there, what it is, and what I should do with it?!? Many thanks!

If the one in ~/Library/ApplicationSupport was accessed at the time you just opened AB, than you can delete the one in your Documents folder.
    I would check first!
If the AB got accidentally moved 10 days ago, then maybe the new one has only recent entries. So CHECK FIRST!
If the one in the Documents folder is much bigger, post back. If they are roughly the same, do as macwiz suggests.

  • Address Book app missing after ML upgrade

Hi - After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I no longer have the Address Book app in my Applications folder.
It exists on the backup clone I made just before I upgraded. But that version won't run under Mountain Lion.
    2 Questions:
    1) What happened?
    2) How do I restore Address Book? Reinstall ML?
    Thanks....

Doh. I had set up a hot key to call up Address Book.
When it failed, I looked in the Applications Folder. No Address Book!
I wish all my computer issues were this easy to fix...thank you.

  • Mac Address Book Syncing - missing contacts

Hi all my first post here.
I just got my iPhone 3G here in Japan. I synced my contacts from my address book on my mac, but i noticed that a lot of contacts don't show up? is there any reason for this? I'd say %90 of my contacts have been copied correctly, but there are about %10 that are missing.
    Thanks,
    -Chris

Gosh ... I hoped to find the solution for my girlfriends problem here. Exaktly the same:
She's got a new iPhone 3G and was syncing. After that, there are about 20 % of the contacts, which are on her MacBook, missing in the iPhone. Only solution until now: Add the missing contact on the iPhone and resync. Then there they are ... abd they stay.

  • Contacts in Address Book Mysteriously Missing

    Hi,
My boss had been having some issues with Entourage, so get him through I had set him up with an account in Mail.
After discovering the external HD he was using to run Time Machine failed (the drive is making the clicking noise of death), I decided it was going to be easier to just reinstall Microsoft.
The next day when he opened Address Book, he noticed all of his contacts were missing. Of course, this problem was discovered after he had already synced his iPhone (so now his contacts on the iPhone are gone as well.)
So my question is (without the aid of Time Machine, or his usually synced iPhone) is there anyway to get these contacts back? Any advice would be a great help.
    Thanks
    CGian

    Try this simple step first:
From the home screen on your phone, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap your MobileMe account. Tap the sliders off for each account that your are syncing. If prompted to do so, tap Keep on My iPhone/iPod touch. Turn your iPhone/iPod touch off and back on, then re-enable syncing. If prompted to do so, choose Merge with MobileMe. Wait a few minutes, and try syncing again.
