Address Book Freezes Whilst launching

I am trying to consolidate my contacts by importing multiple duplicates contacts contained in various backup as Vcards and updating the same to have one complete contact database. However I noticed that one of the contacts repeats the mutiple contact information many times over and when I try to edit that particular contact the Addressbook freezes and I have to force quit.
Any subsequent attempt to open the address book leads to it freezing without displaying the contacts window page. I then have to force quit again without entering the application to continue my work.
Can someone tell me how to resolve this problem please. I am stuck at the moment.

Error Message Received from Console when I attempt to open Addressbook.

  • Mail and Address Book freezing on launch

Just recently, both Mail and Address Book have started freezing immediately after I launch them. I tried using DiskWarrior, repairing Permissions using Disk Utility, and repairing my Keychain, but the problem still persists. At first, Mail displays its window as expected, but it does not respond (although I can still move the window) and I get the spinning beachball cursor. Address book just brings up a blank window, with no expected contents. Like Mail, it does not respond, I get the spinning beachball cursor, and I can still move the window.
Any ideas as to what's going on and how to fix it?

Well, I don't see that option anywhere in Verizon's webmail service. But, it looks like your other suggestion is on the right track. With some minimal experimentation, I found that when I remove the "AddressBook" folder from "Application Support," the freeze disappears. But on the down side, only two contacts show up when I open Address Book. So for now, I've put the folder back where it was originally. Do you have any recommendations on how to narrow down the problem so that I can fix the freezes without having to lose the bulk of my contacts list (and have to piece it back together)?

  • Address Book Freezes

I have a new iMac. My wife recently created a new smart mailbox into which she added multiple addresses. Since then we have had limited function with Address Book. Adding an address or using one for email causes the program to freeze requiring near constant usage of the "Force Quit" function. When the Ad Book is opened with Mail it too freezes requiring "Force Quit". Without the Ad Book the email works well.
Does anyone know the cause and, if so, could you post a solution. Thank you

    Welcome to the discussions, aeraz.
Please explain more clearly "created a new smart mailbox into which she added multiple addresses".
Does this mean: in the Mail program there is a smart mailbox, with multiple parameters such as "any recipient contains [email protected]" or in the Address Book program there is a smart group
with multiple parameters such as "card contains aeraz".
In either case, have you tried deleting the smart box or group?
    AK
    AK,
Thank you for your reply. It was nice to wake up and not feel isolated with a problem that reminds me, excuse the comparison, of Windows. In answer to your questions:
    1. I was referring to a group.
    2. The application freezes whether it is launched by itself or through another application (i.e. Mail).
    3. Any application used in conjonction with address book freezes
    4. Any attempt to remove the group provoked a freeze. This has led me to believe (perhaps erroneously) that the creation of this group could be the source of the problem. Why?
    Thank you

  • Please help -- Address Book Crashing on Launch, causing problems with Mail

    Problem:
Address Book crashes on launch. Mail crashes on launch as soon as it tries to access address book. Can't use either program.
    History:
First noticed problem after an out-of-hard-disk space problem. Had about 2 GB left on the 80 GB hard drive in my 1 GHz iMac G4. Was comparing two very large TIFF files in Photoshop when it crashed because it had used up all the available scratch disk space. Mail and Address Book were also open at the time, along with a number of other apps.
After re-starting, Mail began crashing on launch. There had been a message open at the time of the first crash, and it appeared that the crash was happening as soon as Mail went to Address Book to find the sender's image for that message. The crash report showed that Address Book was the thread that failed.
Tried to launch Address Book; crashes on launch.
    Both applications refuse to launch.
(Have also noticed that Safari crashes when entering text in a field -- good thing I have an iBook to use to post this plea for help!)
    Attempted Solutions:
    Scoured these discussions for suggestions.
    Trashed preferences, re-started & re-launched; no luck.
Repaired permissions and disk repeatedly until squeaky clean
Used Pacifist to re-install sync services, address book, mail; no luck
Re-run Combo Update PPC 10.4.6; no luck
Have now done a full Archive and Install, re-installed the 10.4.6 combo update and the most recent security update, and verified permissions and disk.
Problem still persists -- which suggests it's something in my User library, I presume, but I'm out of ideas. Very tired and frustrated -- please help!
I've copied the most recent pertinent information from Address Book's Crash Log and posted below. Let me know if I need to post anything else, or logs from other apps. Thanks for taking the time to look into my problem, everyone!

I'm no expert on Address Book, but I can tell you that the files involved in the crash could be HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and anything in HOME/Library/Application Support/AddresBook/. It looks like you have ignored this latest folder so far. I would try moving both items to the Desktop, restart, and see whether that stops the crashes.

  • Address book does not launch and does not sync to iphone

When I had upgraded to 10.5.4, the permissions from my user profile got corrupted. Since then I have created another profile and rebuilt permissions. Now the address book is not launching, it just bounces in the dock and nothing happens. Also when I try to sync my iphone i get an error saying i don't have permissions to carry out a operation and it quits out. i think it has to do with the address book not launching. Is this a permissions problem or another quirky thing because of this 10.5 OS??
    Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what you mean by your "user profile." Do you mean you recreated a new user account along with a new home folder?
If you create a second account, can you launch the Address Book from that one?
If you cannot launch Address Book at all, you may need to reinstall OS X.

  • Address Book won't launch

    Hello!
Sorry, if this has been covered before, but for some google hours I couldn't find any answer. Address Book doesn't launch: "The application Address Book quit unexpectedly. ... ... Relaunch". Relaunching doesn't work either. And this is the first time I try to launch this app. (The Console report is below.)
Using Disc Utility I've repaired permissions, verified disc successfully; then trashed the com.apple.addressbook.plist file, cleared font cache, disabled all non-system fonts, enabled all fonts, switched user –all with no luck. One thing I've noticed is that there is not any font in the Monotype Sorts font folder.
    Can you help?

I use free AppCleaner, but it does not always remove everything. Gmail Notifier, for instance, installs some other things around.
No, an uninstaller would and should not replace Applescript, and I understand that it's a very convenient utility for the ones competent and eager enough to learn it. And I like that.
What is annoying is that you can't extract any practical understanding when you click "Help" and go to the web page. Increadably, you click and click and click on the links and all you get is the same simple abstract descriptions and the complicated side issues. Neither the uninspiring built-in examples help.
I don't expect to be an Applescript expert in a minute, but Apple could do much better to give some working knowledge. Instead it says again and again that Applescript has a language of its own and uses the Applescript dictionaries of certain applications. Well, I understand that, but when I look into those dictionaries I understand nothing.
Why not explain those terms in dictionaries, at least some basic ones, and give usage EXAMPLES? Why not say: "Now we're going to write an Applescript. Open the Applescript dictionary of application x. Now you'll see the term x there; it means this and the other term y means that. Now put that term in Script Editor window...."

  • Address Book Won't Launch in Leopard

Suddenly, Address Book won't launch in Leopard. It worked after initial installation but now won't open. I have tried re-syncing with .Mac, re-starting. Address Book info (e-mail addresses) is still accurate and available in Mail.
I also installed Leopard on my Mac Book. No problems, Address book works fine.
    How can I fix?

  • Address book freeze

Since upgrading to Lion and iCloud the Address Book freezes on my MacAir.  By freeze I mean that it will not allow me to use search bar and though I can manually scroll to contact, I must double click on contact to open in a separate window as it will not open to that page.
I spent 2-hours on phone with tech support, finally discovered that deleting address book info and then letting iCloud repopulate contacts served to fix the problem.  It happened a few more times and I thought I had the process memorized but then all was well for a while until it just happened again and I cannot recall how to 'fix' it.
The program seems unstable and I would rather not have to 'fix' the same recurrent problem, but I need Address Book to work and will take even the short-term fixes.
Isn't anyone else having this problem?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • Address Book doesn't launch after OS Upgrade

After upgrading from Jaguar OS 10.2.8 to Panther OS 10.3, I had a problem with my Mac which I've now resolved by performing an 'Archive Installation' of 10.3. I've run Sofware Update so I'm now running 10.3.9.
Everything seems to work fine now apart from Address Book. If I launch the application, it appears to be running (there is a small black arrow below the icon in the dock indicating that it is running) but there is no visible interface window. If I command-click the Address Book icon in the dock, I get the option of Force Quitting - 'Application Not Responding'.
I don't want to have to re-install my OS again if I can help it. I've tried Repairing Disk Permissions in Disk Utility, but it didn't help. I've also tried re-installing Address Book using CharlesSoft's Pacifist utility - that didn't help either. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Did not have fonts Lucida Grande and Helvetica activated in Font Book. Once activated Address Book functions as normal.

try the following. move the folder home directory/library/application support/address book to the desktop and start address book. if it starts something is wrong with your user data in that folder and we can try to fix that. if it doesn't start the problem is likely global.

  • Address Book freezes on start-up - have tried everything

Hi, i'm unable to access my address book. I was adding contacts succesfully until I mistakenly created a new group. I tried to erase it but the app wouldn't let me. I closed the app and launched it again: frozen. I still could access the application menu bar;when I tried to change views the app window would just turn white.
I've tried repairing permissions, deleting preferences and also AddressBook-v22.abcddb, reinstalling the app from my other mac. Nothing seems to work.
    Help, please!

Tried this advice by Dave Marsh and everything went back to normal. Guessed I hadn't searched deep enough.
"Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook and move it to the Trash. If that's not enough, go to ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/AddressBook and move its contents to a temporary file on the Desktop. Then, start up Address Book and reimport (File/Import/Address Book Archive, or reimport the vCards from your backup) to rebuild this folder. (The ~ refers to the Library folder in your user account, not the one at the root of the hard drive.)"

  • Contacts app (replaced Address Book) freezes when I try to edit or add any image for contacts. Dragging & dropping does it, too.

I am having a problem with Contacts.app (the app that replaced Address Book). When I edit or attempt to add a picture to a contact it freezes until I kill it. This has happened since the last software update. Safe Boot makes no change...I have no plugins installed that work with iCloud of the Contacts.app. I can't even drag and drop a photo. Anyone else having this? I do tech support for a living and I clearly don't know everything! lol. I want to see if you all have had the same problem.

Never seen or heard of it.
Try deleting the iCal plist and container. The first in user/Library/Preferences. Second in user/Library/Containers.

  • Address Book freezing with Smart Groups - how to delete them?

    Hi guys,
I made some Smart Groups in AB to get ready for iPhone 3G, and one of them has another smart group as a criterion – Address Book really doesn't like this, and freezes every time I try to click on that group. That's fine, I just want to delete, but you have to actually have a group selected in Address Book to get the contextual delete menu, and of course AB freezes before I can get there.
My question: is there a .plist somewhere I can edit to clear out these two groups, or any other ideas on how to delete these two groups that crash Address Book? Thanks!

quit mail and address book and go to the directory homedirectory/Library/Application support/Address Book.
delete the file AddressBook-v22.abcddb. then go to the subfolder Metadata and delete the group cards for the smart groups in question. To quickly find them search for "groups" in that folder. when you start address book, those smart groups should be gone.

  • Address book freeze on merge duplicates

When I merge duplicates in Lion Address Book it freezes. I can leave it for 24 hours and it's still frozen again and again. How do I fix this?

I was also having the same problem (frozen app, right pane unresponsive to selections in the left pane, unable to search) but trashing the database in Library > Application Support > AddressBook did not work for me, so I called Apple Support. They asked if I was syncing with iCloud (yes, I was) and had me 1) export the address book database as a backup (File > Export > Address Book Archive), then 2) open System Preferences > iCloud, then uncheck the Contacts (a dialogue box will appear - click on delete) and leave it unchecked for 15-20 seconds, then recheck the contacts and wait about 30 seconds (for the db to repopulate). Now my AB is happy! Hope this works for you. PB
